If you declare war it’s hard to say “sorry I lost”. So then you have to escalate. It’s one of the reasons war is bad, actually.

Why Vietnam lasted so long. No president wanted to be the one who lost Vietnam.
1135
caligaris_cabinet Mar 28, 2026 +521
And there was no objective other than containment. Couldn’t move troops into the North without triggering WWIII. Bombing didn’t work since the Viet Kong kept coming. There was no Berlin to capture or General Lee to surrender or Yorktown to siege.

AggravatingBase7 Mar 28, 2026 +295
Not that far out from the setup here.

trevor_plantaginous Mar 28, 2026 +321
Its a mosaic defense. Iran switched to the strategy about a decade ago. Iran basically has about 30 different military branches that can all act independently. There’s no cutting the head of the snake. You’re basically forced to fight 30 wars.

guyincognito121 Mar 28, 2026 +184
Well, f***. It's a shame that we're just learning this now.
184
TransBrandi Mar 28, 2026 +283
We're learning this now. The military / intelligence agencies likely already knew this. Trump isn't even learning this now because when intelligence tells him something it doesn't even register in his brain unless it's a teenager, a Big Mac or a well-done steak swimming in ketchup.

He got a dopamine spike from capturing Maduro, because many people in his base applauded him. Afterwards he was chasing to repeat this feeling in Iran, hungry for his fix. I think he didn't realize that even though Maduro is kidnapped, not even Venezuela is a deal shut and done, despite of claiming victory. Now he thinks claiming victory over and over again might do the trick, because that was enough in Venezuela to get approval from his peers.
146
T-MoneyAllDey Mar 28, 2026 +40
Honestly if he would have stopped with the bombing of the Ayatollah, he probably could have claimed another victory but he let the ego get ahead of him

darkshrike Mar 28, 2026 +39
The military war-gamed this out over 20 years ago. The OP Forces general used aysemtric warfare and closed the Strait. He beat the US forces so soundly they stopped the exercises and changed the ROE. They f****** KNEW. Trump & Kegsbreath cant be bothered to listen to experts. This is the natural conclusion to electing the dumbest and cruelest amongst us.
39
this_dust Mar 28, 2026 +7
They sacked the experts whom are all probably laughing their asses off right now, if not crying.
7
JimboTCB Mar 28, 2026 +1
So they just need to call a time out, reset the board and tell Iran to play by the rules so that the US can beat them. Simple!
1
SaltyLorax Mar 28, 2026 +9
Well done steak with ketchup should have lost him texas

It’s funny because us learning it now is more learning than anyone making decisions is doing.
18
Key-Amoeba1095 Mar 28, 2026 +29
Yeah, feel like we've been screamed at half a dozen times or more about the objectives being clear as day and that we've already won the war yet here we are...continuing to increase the number of troops in the area and Iran is still resisting hard. So. Yeah.
29
porgy_tirebiter Mar 28, 2026 +17
Except 1) the press was *much* freer at the time, and 2) what would count as winning and losing was pretty clear. Cutting and running while the North unified the country under communism meant losing. Right now winning could honestly be whatever the f*** Trump says it is as long as the Strait of Hormuz opens up and gas prices go down. Prices don’t even need to go down to what they were, they just need to go down enough for Trump to spin it. That’s totally doable. If Iran gets to set up tolls and charge ships a fee to exit, surely they’d be fine letting Trump declare victory in exchange. And Rubio has already been laying the groundwork for that.
17
invariantspeed Mar 28, 2026 +28
This is why clear goals matter. I keep hearing from certain news sources that US military is performing excellently and utterly dominating in every engagement. This is true, but it means nothing without the context of objectives (that are being closed in on or that are slipping away). Everyone can understand not telegraphing a blow-by-blow battle plan, but they’re acting like the government can’t say what its overarching objectives are without threading national security. It is all very concerning, militarily and democratically.

"How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Vietnam? How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" - John Kerry in his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

Started a long line of wars America started and then lost Amazing that they spend enough money to end world hunger on fighter jets but regularly get their arses handed to them by goat herders and rice farmers
243
clycoman Mar 28, 2026 +108
Its extremely difficult to invade and occupy land if you dont know the terrains as well as the locals. If they dont want you there, they can just use guerilla tactics constantly - attack you, withdraw, attack again. You can't gain a lasting foothold on the land if the local population resists and repels ever tiny advance the invaders make.
108
Jos3ph Mar 28, 2026 +167
It’s so weird. You fly halfway around the world just to bomb the shit out of people and then they aren’t even happy you are there!

35
Tossawaysfbay Mar 28, 2026 +19
They don’t get their asses handed to them. They just can’t slaughter them indiscriminately as their peers might or as wars were fought before this modern time period. There is no way to “win” a war like this. For either side.
19
H-E-L-L-MaGGoT Mar 28, 2026 +20

Saturnalliia Mar 28, 2026 +452
There's a reason why every previous administration didn't go to war with Iran because they knew it was going to be a clusterfuck. But the orange man and his circle of delusional neo-conservative sycophants think they're the exception to the rule.
452
clycoman Mar 28, 2026 +134
Trump said in 2016 campaign that the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan were a waste of American lives and resources.  Now hes done the exact same thing, but Iran is waaaaay harder to invade.
134
Possibly_English_Guy Mar 28, 2026 +63
>but Iran is waaaaay harder to invade See here's the thing, they either don't know that or are refusing to accept that. Racism, American arrogance and tendency to underestimate their adversaries and just plain old ignorance means these guys think all these places are the exact f****** same. And it's not just the government, the average American conservative knows sweet f*** all about any of these countries and couldn't even point them out on a map that was labeled.

Awkward-Hulk Mar 28, 2026 +53
I'm afraid that we may have already crossed the point of no return. Withdrawing now would unequivocally be seen as surrender. And no matter how much lying Trump and Fox News do, even their minions will see it that way. And on the other side of this, Iran would be crazy to sue for peace now. What's there to stop Israel and their puppet from attacking again? Trump broke all resemblance of credibility that the US had on this issue. Besides, Israel has one and only one objective: to install a puppet regime in Iran. They will not stop until that's a reality. And they'll drag their puppet along as usual.
53
Guy_GuyGuy Mar 28, 2026 +15
I don't think even Israel has an objective beyond Netanyahu staying out of prison. If it had any plans beyond that, it would have told Trump to order his generals to pick one of the 900 Iran war plans from the filing cabinets in the Pentagon that Israel more than likely helped write.
15
deviltrombone Mar 28, 2026 +140

Special military operation /s
743
SomeBaldDude2013 Mar 28, 2026 +288
Trump is literally calling it a “military operation.” He said he’d have to go through congress if it were a war, so he’s calling it a “military operation.” Not making this shit up.

Who knew that a president doesn’t need to ask for war permission if they just never call it a war.
196
Effective_Olive6153 Mar 28, 2026 +63
but it's not really about the President, it's all the Congress people who choose to let that happen while knowing they can stop it. Trump may be crazy, but all the hundreds of people around him are fully aware of what they are doing, they choose to let it happen
63
D0nk3yD0ngD0ug Mar 28, 2026 +62
Can’t send all 150,000 troops at once because that would be a war. 10-20k here and there is a “special operation.”

This isn’t even the Bush Jr Iraq war which started with tens of thousands of soldiers for the invasion, this is exactly how Vietnam escalated into a full blown draft. Even if trump gets bored as he is reported to be with his own war, this won’t stop magically. Every escalation will require further escalation. I pray for us all.
181
JB-Wentworth Mar 28, 2026 +44
Everything is personal with Trump. Unless the mullahs are willing to put on suits and thank Trump at the White House, this war will not end.
44
KeppraKid Mar 28, 2026 +14
It literally doesn't, though. Withdrawing forces and calling for peace is always an option. We don't need to keep this shit up.

these guys dead ass started with two thousand like 2 weeks ago. I'd say it's a mix of testing out public opinion, stock market reactions, and just their own pure incompetence. they thought they could bring a regime change thru the air like In Venezuela and never prepared for a ground war. and now they're scrambling to get the logistics set up

53
yikes_itsme Mar 28, 2026 +137
I get a strange feeling seeing all the young people say “oh, I’ll just refuse, I’ll throw the draft notice in the trash” as if they wouldn’t be thrown in prison and treated like a traitor for the entire war and beyond. i don’t think they understand exactly what a draft is - it’s not like they open up a bunch of job postings that you apply to. It’s not like jury service. They come and throw your ass in basic training, and if you are insubordinate or strategically incompetent, you get imprisoned or worse. That’s the main point about having a draft, when you get to that point it’s not voluntary anymore. You can try to refuse it, the same way you would refuse to pay your taxes or refuse an officer arresting you. If it were any different then everybody would refuse. And for all the young people under 30 who voted for Trump: hope it was worth it. This was a war of his choice, it didn’t have to happen. Just remember you’re going first before any of us old people are called.
137
Personal_Comb_6745 Mar 28, 2026 +47
If a mandatory draft happens, the country is fucked anyway. That basically means too many skilled people have been obliterated and now it's just throwing more bodies at the meat grinder in a desperate attempt to delay the inevitable.
47
sabedo Mar 28, 2026 +59
this country is already fucked beyond repair a pedophile and his den of thieves are making the biggest market manipulation plays in history, America means nothing and stands for nothing except billionaires, cruelty and white nationalism. The dollar will lose it's value and America will lose it's place even IF we had the biggest blue wave in history, even IF these people are thrown in prison for life with no pardon, you still have 90 million people that love every minute of this shit and they would complain about "nothing getting done" and bring these fucks again.
59
pegar Mar 28, 2026 +11
Yup, it was the beginning of the end in 2016. I've been saying it all along. People keep on subconsciously believing that Democrats will fix things again for the next 2-8 years. That's why the stock market still remains so high, and why people fantasize about the US turning into a utopia of fairness and equality. Guess what guys? Our national debt and global warming already give us a hard deadline that we long since passed. We're finally seeing ripples now, but it gets exponentially worse. This moment right now might be the zenith of human civilization.
11
JB-Wentworth Mar 28, 2026 +37

Bit ironic that the nostalgia that the elderly have for those "good ol days" is what led to us becoming a waning empire. We were doing alright before trump sold all the geriatrics on the return of jim crowe, imperialism and low egg prices.

35
Slappyfist Mar 28, 2026 +22
To give my two cents, as you Americans say. What's happened is that the US had a period without competition, transferring into a period where the only possible competition was Russia and Europe (where Europe was more of a client state than competition). With the rise of China suddenly the US is not without competition and you don't like it. However, the two "competitors" are Europe (who has an almost similar GPD without a tech sector or army) and China. The problems have come from the EU being able to dictate terms to the US economically through regulations, which is why there is such focus on destroying the EU and pivoting to Russia as a junior partner instead (like Europe used to be). And China is no longer something US can control. With both happening at the same time the US is very close to being cut out by both if they work together. Basically, we're suffering from US having a tantrum that they no longer dictate the rules of the game.

This is how we sleepwalked directly into the blender of Vietnam. And Iran will be significantly worse than Vietnam because we had ARVN troops specifically set up to be bullet sponges there, whereas here we are going against a fortified nation with zero backup. If you have family in the military, this is not a laughing matter. A ground invasion attempt will result in a stream of flag draped boxes coming back.

My MAGA in laws think it’s just a joke and Trump is just trying to make a deal. They’re not worried at all. They’re more concerned about Democrats and woke gay agenda.
488
No_Tree_8144 Mar 28, 2026 +198
the amount of times ive seen MAGA rationalize the build up of troops is insane. "trump is a business man. he knows how to negotiate. the threat of a ground war is a tool that he uses from his tool box to negotiate while showing strength" he's not bob the f****** builder. any commander or leader on the planet thats currently at war would be preparing for a ground invasion. matter of fact if I was a higher up in the IRGC and trump said "no ground invasion" I would SPECIFICALLY prepare for one. who the hell trusts the commander in chief of a country you're at war with??
198
frisbeethecat Mar 28, 2026 +112
Now, when my MAGA relatives brought up Trump as a negotiator, I told them that's spoonfed bullshit that they've been eating. I asked them if they heard about the joke Trump made to the Japanese Prime Minister. Maybe they had, maybe they hadn't. I clarified that the Japanese Prime Minister was visiting Trump because Japan needed ~~to make a decision about whether or not they were going to use Chinese yuan to buy oil shipping through the Strait of Hormuz or if they would stick with the US dollar.~~ (MISINTERPRETATION OF MEETING re: WAR IN IRAN AND ENERGY POLICY). I explained how much of America's power and economy is tied to the world using petrodollars---buying oil with US currency. I explained that a reporter asked Trump why he didn't inform US allies such as Japan about the surprise attack on Iran. Trump turned around to the Japanese Prime Minister and made a joke about how the Japanese didn't warn the US about Pearl Harbor. ~~I told them the next day, Japan announced they were going to use Chinese Yuan to buy oil.~~ (UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMOR). I then told my relatives they've been conned. They've been played for rubes. Everything costs more. Jobs are drying up. We're at war. Nobody's being arrested for raping and sex-trafficking children documented in the Epstein files. And how even now, they're willing and eager to bend over and get fucked harder by Trump, the Republicans, and the rich fuckwads who own everything. Anyway, I'm disinvited for Easter dinner.

The number one post on the conservative sublistnook is that the libs are saying we need to submit to Islam. They're not even in the same reality anymore.

>A ground invasion attempt will result in a stream of flag draped boxes coming back. Which is gonna make a great photo op and parade opportunity for Trump and people will eat it up and praise him.

Republican voters are the most stupid fucks on this planet. Imagine voting for the two assholes that took us into Middle East forever wars because of culture war propaganda. I can understand hating democrats cause they are corporate shills but you gotta be actually mentally ill to support the Republican Party.

Iggy_R3d Mar 28, 2026 +43
Kamala had a weird laugh and refused to do the Joe Rogan podcast which clearly makes her unfit for office. The senile Russian owned pedo was clearly the better choice.

Remember when a country would elect their village idiot and it would only impact them? So in order, bankrupted a c*****, multiple other businesses, over a million dead last time during covid, got elected again, concentration camps and the US government is insolvent I believe, now aiming to bankrupt the rest of the world. He carries on like a make a wish kid but this has to be the first time ever that people are routing for the terminal disease.

Well AI, you did it. You somehow managed to hold on long enough for this clown to torpedo the world economy before you did
142

At least this should take AI down with it. High interest rates and tighter credit are going to make it really hard to keep building out infrastructure.

Dude, it's already there: The Actual Selling Price is around $175 a bbl. There's currently a large discrepancy between the Paper Price at $115 a bbl. Some countries have already declared a Public Emergency. So $300 a bbl will really take the sting out of buying a Chinese Electric Vehicle.

You’re gonna need to cite this because I saw someone say something similar and I had to look around to see a yemeni port offering this on the spot

Must be nice to live somewhere a Chinese EV is an option. They aren't street legal in the US, let alone the massive amounts of fees you'd have to pay to import one.

I had a republican argue to me this week that the only person to blame for this war was Joe Biden because Joe Biden didn't start a war with Iran and thus forced Trump to have to do it.

I was in Army infantry boot camp when the election was going on and when the drill sergeants finally told us who won the election nearly everyone in the platoon reacted like they just heard that Jesus Christ himself returned to Earth. Crazy to think that some of those guys were unknowingly cheering for the near future cause of their own early death.
