Did the elephants take his head as a trophy?

Nah, they're very civilized.

They took his other head and labeled it “How does he breathe through that little thing??’

About the same thought I had about the famous bull fighter that recently got a horn shove up his ass.
242
billiardstourist Apr 25, 2026 +150
Yeah, bullfighters can get fucked. I want to see bullfighters replaced with "bulldancers" who do not harm animals. Preserve the culture, but end the abuse.

wiztard Apr 25, 2026 +12
I'm not saying it wouldn't be an improvement but do the bulls enjoy this dancing surrounded by crowds of yelling people? Or is it just a lesser form of abuse?
12
chazzzer Apr 25, 2026 +40
I'd imagine they enjoy it better than getting stabbed to death.
40
happyflappypancakes Apr 25, 2026 +15
Probably would enjoy being in a field under a shady tree even more. Might even enjoy smelling the flowers as well.
15
WildeOpen Apr 25, 2026 +2
Might be a bit more difficult to get thousands of people to switch to watching a bull laying around.

1
billiardstourist Apr 25, 2026 +3
You make a fair point. If one was to create a more pleasant atmosphere for the bulls, they probably wouldn't "dance" - attack. So, it seems making them attack or upset at all, is abusive. "Dancing of the Bulls"
3
KneeCrowMancer Apr 25, 2026 +15
The thing is that bulls are naturally quite aggressive creatures and instinctually charge and attack potential predators that could harm the herd. It’s baked into them to try to charge down wolves, bears, hell even lions at the time. There’s an argument that the “dancing” could be a form of enrichment for the bulls and allows them to fulfill their instinctual drive to charge things.

The problem with hunting elephants isn't that you have to be better than the elephant You have to be better than everyone who's hunted them before After all, an elephant never forgets
42
AwildYaners Apr 25, 2026 +57
He wasn’t even hunting them, he was hunting antelope apparently. To have a handful of elephants “sneak up” on you to trample you is such a big oof. Sometimes there is a little karmic justice.
57
Little_View_6659 Apr 25, 2026 +25

> The elephants did to him what he was doing to them. Per the article's sub-head, he was hunting antelope at the time. The article doesn't specifically say whether he'd hunted elephants previously, but my guess would be yes, given he's described as a big-game hunter.
14
Local-Dimension-1653 Apr 25, 2026 +30
There are photos of him with kills from lots of different species, including elephants. Very sad.
30
Bodark43 Apr 25, 2026 +1
There are plenty of hunters like me, who have a couple of places locally they can hunt. We'll spend time getting to know the trails, the habits ( white tail deer have habits and routes). And we'll maybe go out several times before we get something. And regardless, it's good to walk in the woods. And I for one don't need a rack to hang on the wall- some roasts in the freezer are enough for me. Then there are the guys who schedule three or four days into their busy lives, drop tens of thousands on tickets and permits for somewhere far away, pay a guide who will lead them to a new and different critter that they can shoot. Then they hang the head on the wall back home. Is that hunting? Or is it some kind of shopping?
1
VagrantShadow Apr 25, 2026 +1
The trophy room in his home looked like the same one from Roadhouse. This was a guy who loved to hunt and kill things and hold up their remains against his walls with pride. This time nature struck back, and he became the trophy for elephants.
1
Major_Mollusk Apr 25, 2026 +7
> The article doesn't specifically say whether he'd hunted elephants previously Yes it does. And yes he did: > Originally from Lodi, California, Dosio had built an extensive collection of hunting trophies over the years, including animals such as elephants and lions. He was reportedly a familiar name within the Sacramento Safari Club. The probability that this guy wasn't a total douchebag is zero point zero. The only people who fly to Africa to kill large mammals are pathological narcissists. There are no exceptions to this rule. Crushing death by elephant was the best possible outcome in this situation.
7
realmofconfusion Apr 25, 2026 +8
Now he’s an even bigger, but considerably flatter, -game hunter. (Not that he’ll be doing much in the way of hunting from now on).
8
Secret_Cow_5053 Apr 25, 2026 +2
It’s not just karma. Elephants are smart, possibly as smart as humans. It very well could have been intentional.

101
Iridismis Apr 25, 2026 +97
Not sure if they recognized *him* personally, but it's not unusual for elephants to attack what they consider predators. And it wouldn't surprise me if they categorize human-with-a-gun as such.

Pristine_Club_3128 Apr 25, 2026 +45
This herd was made of mother elephants with calves. They would definitely have reacted.
45
-SatelliteMind- Apr 25, 2026 +29
Elephants are part (and top contender) of Africa's "Big 5" of land animals that kill humans. The males enter what is called "musth" which absolutely fills them with testosterone and attitude, making them extremely territorial, and the females are highly defensive when calves are present. They're gorgeous creatures, but certainly something you don't want to round the corner on your bicycle and come across. Allegedly, according to 'Elephant Incident' responders in Africa, elephants have a very common habit of decapitation when killing humans, and they just kind of stand on you and pull your limbs off like an action figure. Just to be clear Hippos are not #1 because most human deaths are in aquatic environments, Big 5 is land-only (no mosquitos either)
29
BlokeDude Apr 25, 2026 +12
Decapitation is when you remove someone's head. Removing limbs is 'dismemberment'
12
ComeonmanPLS1 Apr 25, 2026 +6

MadRaymer Apr 25, 2026 +1
Elephants will sometimes charge too, either as a mock charge to intimidate, or a real one to trample. If you find yourself getting charged by an elephant, you might as well assume it's a mock charge and not run. Because if it's not a mock charge, you're pretty much fucked.

> Conservation status: near threatened He will not be missed.
12
JAM3SBND Apr 25, 2026 +6
The funds for conservation come from making these wealthy assholes pay exorbitant fees to hunt animals that are too old to breed. The main source of revenue for conservation is ethical hunting. Save this energy for poachers.
6
naomi_whatsapp Apr 25, 2026 +9
This rich dipshit was a trophy hunter and didn't care one bit about conservation
9
lessenizer Apr 25, 2026 +13
that still makes him one of the “wealthy assholes pay[ing] exorbitant fees to hunt animals that are too old to breed” and tberefore part of a source of “funds for conservation”; whether or not the wealthy assholes *care* wasn’t mentioned
13
Barbarake Apr 25, 2026 +3
Supposedly they're hunting animals that are too old to breed but, according to many researchers, they actually go after the biggest animal they can (aka 'trophy').
3
JAM3SBND Apr 25, 2026 +2

yesTHATpao Apr 25, 2026 +5
There’s an incredible episode of This American Life that talks about why governments issue hunting licenses for animals like elephants. Usually it’s for a very specific one that’s become a danger to the herd or the area. People pay thousands that the gov can then use for the benefit of the animals and they remove the problem from the area.

>Ernie Dosio, a 75-year-old vineyard owner, was hunting yellow-backed duiker, an antelope species, in the central African country of Gabon when the incident occurred last Friday. While in the Lope-Okanda rainforest, he and his guide unexpectedly came across five female elephants accompanied by a calf. >Dosio had built an extensive collection of hunting trophies over the years, including animals such as elephants and lions. So he wasn't hunting elephants this time, but he apparently had been in the past. Between this guy and that Spanish bullfighter who took a horn up the butt, it has not been a good week for people who pick fights with animals bigger than themselves. >Every year, clients of the trophy-hunting industry claim the lives of tens of thousands of wild animals across the world. Legal hunting tours in Africa are popular with some wealthy Americans, including Donald Trump Jr, who was pictured holding a severed elephant’s tail more than a decade ago. Oh yeah, with all the other stuff going on I'd forgotten about that.

4
Homeless-Coward-2143 Apr 25, 2026 +8
Probably was hunting elephants, but since it's in the news they have to say they were hunting something else. Six elephants are not really known for their stealth. Their survival mechanism is "I'm 50x bigger than everything else and can't be hurt."

Specialist_Gap_3399 Apr 25, 2026 +58
Weird how this keeps getting framed as a “tragic accident” instead of “very predictable consequence.” If this bugs you, maybe toss a few bucks to an actual wildlife conservation group instead of trophy tours.
58
Blackthorn79 Apr 25, 2026 +6
It does seem to be a built in risk. While I don't like the idea of trophy hunting, when regulated properly it can help to control animal population and fund conservation projects. Part of the appeal is the danger, how ever small, adding to the feel that it's an adventure not simply a tourism trip.
6
Environmental-Car481 Apr 25, 2026 +6
While the idea of killing beautiful animals absolutely horrifies me, my logical side knows that the regulated hunts do some good. The funds help whatever country or program. They target an animal that is not good for the overall herd, I believe normally an older male so younger ones can mate and help the population grow. Then the meat is generally given to people that have food scarcity. It’s still barbaric. Edit to add score one for the elephants. I don’t hate this outcome for the hunter.
6
highbrowalcoholic Apr 25, 2026 +4
> The funds help whatever country or program Maybe helping another country amass enough liquidity a) to reinstitutionalize out of colonized socioeconomic patterns and b) to overcome initial startup costs, in order to become a productive contributor to global trade — maybe all that doesn't _have_ to involve a rich man from an overseas colonizer culture giving the country some hoarded wealth in exchange for playing with the country's ecosystem like a sandbox, all so that they can compensate their ego's self-perceived inferiority with a weapon that other people made, on a hunt that other people lead, paid for with a bank account that other people filled. TL;DR: ends don't justify means

Just watched *Ghost Elephants*. Big game hunting in today's times should be abolished. Take a camera, celebrate the fact that you, a mere human from a concrete jungle, were in the midst of majestic and noble animals, in their habitat, and revered by local tribes that make these animals part of their mythology. Don't kill them for sport, FFS. There is no point in that.

That's a big step for the elephants. I wish them more future triumps when it comes to stepping on garbage.

Man I had the best pizza today. But then when I came home and warmed it up as leftovers it was awful. Total bummer. Anyway how’s everybody doing today?

Good riddance, f*** these people who kill animals just for fun

You don’t have to use the preface the big game hunter with ‘millionaire’ it’s not as if target workers are taking their vacations hunting elephants

PaulR79 Apr 25, 2026 +1
Shouldn't this be in uplifting news?

lil-braids Apr 25, 2026 +2
The elephants probably remember what he did last time.
2
MiddleAgeCool Apr 25, 2026 +4
Something, something, the hunter became the hunted. Maybe the elephants will cut off his horn and keep it as a trophy.

Good time to remind everyone that elephants are on that list of "animals" that are just people but we can't really talk to them properly. Elephant groups literally what is recognized as distinct languages and cultures between each one, they are fully self-aware, and *extremely* intelligent. Seriously, it should just be treated like we would a homicide when someone intentionally kills an elephant. They really aren't "just animals", they are just on the unfortunate end of the raw deal that is not evolving before we did into a form capable of sustaining a technological civilization like a lot of equally intelligent species (Dolphins come to mind) on this planet.

I remember a study a few years ago on a decrease in tusked male adults in certain Asian elephant populations. It turned out that females had figured out that tusks put you at risk from poachers and were choosing tuskless males to mate with so their children would be safer. The gene for tusking wasn't being passed down. That's the kind of intelligence elephants have going for them. They figured out poachers' motivations. They figured out genetics. And they figured out how to successfully balance the two.

Vaperius Apr 25, 2026 +5
There are *a lot* of reports that elephants can explicitly discern between poachers and other humans, and will seek out humans they know are friendly if they are hurt, including by poachers. There's also reports of elephant hunting down humans that have hurt them and trampling them to death, even *years* after it happened. They are very much "people" level intelligent.

Was he a republican? Asking for irony.

Does "millionaire" add anything to the story?

strolpol Apr 25, 2026 +1
It doesn’t matter if you were the nicest person in life, if you go on safari and get killed by wildlife people will generally say you had it coming It’s just such avoidable a****** behavior even before it became an explicitly rich guy thing

Are the elephants okay?

I've always found it fascinating how people empathized so much with some animals but at the same time lacked complete empathy to other animals when it comes to food. If you really cared you know what you need to do.

Hoogs Apr 25, 2026 +2
If you choose to hunt animals, you are making yourself a part of their ecosystem and should expect this as a possibility every time. I hope the elephants didn’t hurt their feet.
