Trump will bring in Sarah Huckabee Sanders to be the new secretary. She has been on several cruises and knows the oceans.

Nope, his replacement is much better than that, it's Hung Cao. His passion project is sounding the alarm on how witchcraft has taken over California and spreading to Virginia, seriously. He believes Christians need to mobilize across the nation to stop the spread of wiccan witches. Another batshit crazy appointment by Trump

I'll take anyone with a brain that will listen to the experts and protect them from Trump's fits of grandeur. Ship acquisitions are measured in decades, not months or years. All Trump can do in a couple of years is to screw things up. All that has to happen is for the work to continue below Trump's threshold of perception. That should be easy; if he drifts into talking Navy just mention his birthday arch or his throne room and watch him ping-pong his way into his happy corner.

One of Epstein’s associates. Really under explored by the media just how many Epstein people trump stuffed in his admin— probably best way to keep them all quiet. Wild.

I think Trump learned about the concept and word "leverage" by taking all the Epstein material from the FBI and using it to create fully compliant people in key positions.
15
Still-Cash1599 Apr 23, 2026 +6
This doesn't make sense because he was leveraging their guilt before he had access to the FBI. He most likely has his own pile of direct evidence from the parties where the host was buying infants from the lower east side.

A man walks up to the same newsstand every day and glances at all the newspapers, checks all the headlines, then walks away without buying a paper. Every day he does the same thing, scans teh headlines then walks away. One day the merchant asks him "what are you looking for that you check the headlines every day?" "I'm looking for an obituary" "Silly man, the obituaries are in the back!" "Not the one I'm looking for."

From Sarah Longwell at the Bulkwark: We’re in the middle of a pretty important naval blockade standoff with a country we’ve threatened to destroy, so it seems like a weird time for the Secretary of the Navy to abruptly depart. And by “weird” I mean, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
65
Dry-Amphibian1 Apr 23, 2026 +10
This was my first thought. What is happening when the Sec of Navy resigns in the middle of a naval blockade.
10
_Cat_in_a_Hat_ Apr 23, 2026 +3
I got this from a CNN article so not sure how true it is, but it seems that this happened because Phelan was "too slow" with implementing the shipbuilding renovations that Hegseth wanted. Oh and he also directly communicated with Trump several times, which made Hegseth feel ~~jealous~~ undermined. So he complained to Daddy Trump, and the glorious POTUS switly decided to fire the guy.
3
WhistlerBum Apr 23, 2026 +225
John didn’t sign up for donating millions and then having to scream at admirals. He’s got his own millions to think about. Playing Navy was supposed to be fun.

Is he the one that told trump he cant launch nukes?
200
kayl_breinhar Apr 23, 2026 +362
No, Phelan was apparently getting into routine disagreements with Kegsbreath, and the latter was afraid Phelan was trying to get *him* fired. This means Hung Cao, a certifiable f****** lunatic, is now acting SecNav.

How dare you accuse [witch hunter Hung Cao](https://www.businessinsider.com/hung-cao-gop-senate-candidate-virginia-witchcraft-california-african-american-2023-7) of being a lunatic? How many sorceresses have you seen flying on brooms in the navy since he took over? That’s right- none!

25
Diplomat_of_swing Apr 23, 2026 +27
Sorta not a great look to have the Sec. of the Navy step down in the middle of a blockade
27
msr42day Apr 23, 2026 +21
And the USN is "redirecting" Iran-flagged vessels outside of ports in India, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. ADMIN47 is going to lose a USN ship because other nations are not going to tolerate having their goods redirected in their territorial waters and insurers will come after the US Government to pay for delayed receipt of goods. This is so FUBAR.

Paywalled. I'll guess he had the temerity to point out a blockade is an act of war. Edit: He's a billionaire civilian appointee, not a member of the services, and he got the job for donating to Trump's campaign and hanging around Mar-a-Lago. I suspect now he just was out of his league and genuinely needed to go.

guttanzer Apr 23, 2026 +25
In a rare credit to the Trump administration, I have to say this was a good decision. Phelan has no line authority. The Navy Secretary's job is to build and maintain the Navy, so disagreements over deployments and/or the nukes wasn't a real issue. Phelan's claim to fame came from a business career completely unrelated to the Navy mission. He probably got the job because he aligned with Trump's "Big Golden Fleet" vision featuring battleships, steam-catapult aircraft carriers, and other holdovers from WW II. The Pentagon and NAVSEA have seen what that history was like and want to move into the future, with electric-drive ships, submarines, increased use of unmanned vehicles, and so on. In other words, a 21st Century Navy. Ukraine is proving that this new vision gets results. Phelan opposed all that. The Navy's science and technology community is literally the best in the world. Their war college up in Newport has been gaming various force architectures for literally centuries. The NAVSEA extended community has literally thousands of highly specialized PhD-level engineers that have spent their entire careers sorting out estoeric problems like how to make silent propellers, rail guns, and hypersonic sea-skimming missiles. For good or bad, they are fully capable of grinding opinionated blowhards like Trump into dust with mountains of white papers and vu-graph presentations. Trump would have to purge the lot of them to get his way, but if he does what he did to the NIH he gets no new navy. They know this, and they know they are right, so he's not getting any traction there. And then there is the shipbuilding industry. The Navy routinely contracts them to build the most complex moving machines ever invented. There are billions of dollars in every contract, so organized crime has at least a century head-start at infiltrating the shipyards. Trump's "new boss on the block" bluster isn't going to phase them in the least. So the shipyards aren't soft targets either. Phelan had no chance. Trump's vision is completely nuts. He's a spoiled brat playing with boats in a giant tub. Pee Wee Herman could have taken Phelan down. And good riddance.
25
amateur_mistake Apr 23, 2026 +20
Solid comment and interesting thoughts. However, this part is probably wrong: > He probably got the job because he aligned with Trump's "Big Golden Fleet" vision featuring battleships He got the job because he was a billionaire, mutual friend of trump and Epstein. He had no experience with the Navy before getting this job in any way, shape or form. And certainly no real opinions on what ships we should be building in the future.
20
guttanzer Apr 23, 2026 +5
No doubt true. But of all the billionaires, I’ll bet he was the choice for the Navy because he pitched a tent in his pants for the return of 16” guns too. He’s consistently pushed the Big Golden Fleet fantasy.

20
yunus89115 Apr 23, 2026 +3
Phelan may have been ineffective and had an incompatible vision but what’s the next guy going to do? Phelan didn’t initiate massive RIFS (under the guise of reassignments) like the Army had, will the next guy hold back or double down and cause a massive institutional knowledge exodus from NAVSEA? I think the answer is, no one knows yet but we’ll find out soon.

The judge ruled that punishing Senator Mark Kelly for: **reminding military officers of their constitutional duty to refuse illegal orders would violate the First Amendment.**” And now, Secretary of the Navy John Phelon is: **reminding a military officer of their constitutional duty to refuse illegal orders as it would violate the constitution!** We stand with you Jon Phelan.
