Does the U.S. ever give economic aid to itself anymore?

I spoke with a Hungarian in a video game and they were the weirdest person I've ever chatted with. That person in particular seemed very pro-russian despite common sense.

hoggytime613 Apr 11, 2026 +493
I've spoken with hundreds of Hungarians in Budapest and there is no love for Orban there. The less educated rural vote is the backbone of Orban support. Hmmm...reminds me of somewhere else....

It’s crazy how many Trump quotes need to be followed by “No really, he actually said this”.

“You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers.” “These are people of the land—the common clay of the new West. You know... morons.”

Unlucky-Public-2947 Apr 11, 2026 +45
Orban gerrymandered the districts to give more political power to rural voters.
45
Stargazer1701d Apr 11, 2026 +21
Sounds familiar.
21
Mindfully-Numb Apr 11, 2026 +5
I’ve always thought the word ‘gerrymandered’ has the same cringe factor as ‘kiddy fiddling’. Both are sneaky, manipulative and perpetrated by losers who can’t cut it in a normal way.

Qtoyou Apr 11, 2026 +50
I have a Hungarian friend who's mother and grandmother were lined up against a wall by Soviet soldiers to be shot, in the Hungarian Revolution. They are most definitely not pro Orban
50
psioniclizard Apr 11, 2026 +13
Yea I lived with a Hungarian who's family was regularly abused by the soviets and he actually left the country because Orban in particular didn't like it. Also the hardest working bloke I have even known and super talented. Hungary deserves better it's a beautiful country with a rich history and culture.

Sussex-Wolf Apr 11, 2026 +19
I lived in Budapest for 4 years pre Covid. Definitely little support for him in the wealthy cities, as they value the close ties with Europe and the benefits of EU membership. His support is in the rural and poorer areas. A decade ago he amended the election voting to increase the weighting towards the rural areas. At the same time his allies bought up the tv networks and newspapers. He then passed laws preventing the opposition from running political ads on billboards. But the government was not prevented from running ads vilifying Soros, who 20 years previous, had supported Orban. He also limited the power of the independent courts to rule on government matters, replacing it with a government appointed administrator - to prevent investigation into government fraud such as the Russian metro line refurbishment. Orban and his administration are smart and capable, but they have lent into the Putin model of suppression of democracy as much as they can while remaining in the EU where they benefit from free trade and structural investments. Economically they have prospered under his administration, but at a cost of authoritarianism.
19
Lillemor_hei Apr 11, 2026 +19

As well as those of us from allies and partners sadly.
5
cletus_spuckle Apr 11, 2026 +11
Aye, and for that I’m sorry. What I hope citizens of other countries realize is that it’s not a partisan battle it’s a battle of us versus the powerful elites. The elites have weaponized ignorance to gain power, the rest of us need to focus on educating the ignorant of the dangers of supporting authoritarians
11

Trump just ordered the closure of the US Forest service. That's just an example but that's basically how it goes. Services are cut, His morons voters cheer because "Hurray, less government !" but the taxes stay the same and the tarifs keeps on coming.

7

I wonder how all the conservatives that hate the US giving aid to other countries justify this.
274
Marsupialmania Apr 11, 2026 +160
Orban hates immigrants and lgbtq…that’s all the justification they need
160
cletus_spuckle Apr 11, 2026 +63
You know, the concept of giving money to foreigners because they also hate foreigners is just stupid enough that it makes a lot of sense given the current political situation
63
Marsupialmania Apr 11, 2026 +21
The far right is looking at all the European countries and saying how immigrants have ruined them. Guys like orban are heroes for them
21
cletus_spuckle Apr 11, 2026 +13
It’s just weaponized ignorance. There is a bell curve and 50% are on the wrong side, supporting the wrong individuals
13

And he supports russia unwaveringly. everything they want
13
helm Apr 11, 2026 +6
Orban is also Putin’s little b****. What a coincidence!
6
ThePanicButon Apr 11, 2026 +75
Same reason Trump got away with propping up Argentina, Israel, Honduras, and other far right governments (with support for AFD, the National Front, etc. in coming elections). And undermines Canada, the E.U., the U.N., etc. They want to destroy liberalism and internationalism globally. It's the attempt to impose a new illiberal world order. Many in MAGA believe in that as a "civilizational" struggle.
75
Able_Cabinet_9118 Apr 11, 2026 +16
It’s bringing back kings . King Orban, king Trump, King Putin. No longer democratic elections just one psychopath deciding the fate of his subjects.
16
DisastrousAcshin Apr 11, 2026 +17
This. The Revolution will be bloodless so long as the left allow it
17

Conservatives principles are whatever Trump tells them it is for the day. They might change tomorrow
18
kstar79 Apr 11, 2026 +31
As a US taxpayer, propping up governments like Argentina and Hungary while they cut things at home is infuriating.
31
Locke66 Apr 11, 2026 +20
Even crazier when Argentina took the bailout money and then lowered their trade barriers to China after Trump raised US barriers effectively taking away the America market.

Sorry, America is a Russian oligarchy now. Republicans like it better that way.
25
catdogbear13 Apr 11, 2026 +63
This should be the top comment. It's becoming so obvious how are Americans not seeing this!
63
Optimal_Juggernaut37 Apr 11, 2026 +38
Cognitive bias is a b****. Eventually they will accept it and then change the narrative to say that Russia has always been their friend and that it's NATOs fault, then they'll Invade Canada or some shit.
38
htownmidtown1 Apr 11, 2026 +10
The ones paying attention over the past decade have. Even the conservatives. The GOP doesn’t like to admit that they have a Russian problem and that it’s infiltrated their party. Many of them left because of it but lots of people are silent about it because they “benefit” from it.
10
Giraf123 Apr 11, 2026 +7
A good chunk of them a genuinely extremely stupid and deeply religious. Not a good combo.
7

Based on his supporters love for Rudsia as well, this is likely more conservative men submissive to authority and strong man figures.   Just the US having alot of power right now that they are missing away slowly.
11
Critical-Usual Apr 11, 2026 +11
That and threatening to invade Iceland. And withdrawing support for Ukraine. Next time he asks for support in his war from his European "allies" maybe ask Russia instead. Except wait, Russia is backing Iran? Please make it make sense
11
PropJoesChair Apr 11, 2026 +11
bruv... Greenland, not Iceland...
11
Joe_Kinincha Apr 11, 2026 +12
Nah, fam. He’s quite right. Trump has repeatedly threatened Iceland. He may have meant Greenland but he said Iceland repeatedly. https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2026/01/21/trump-iceland-greenland-speech-davos-switzerland/88283786007/ Any other politician does that, their career ends right there and they would be no more than a punchline for the rest of history. That, however, was not even in the top 10 dumbest, most dangerous things he said that day.
12
PropJoesChair Apr 11, 2026 +6
Actually true, I forgot he said that. It's hard to keep up with all the idiotic things he has said
6
WayneSmallman Apr 11, 2026 +5
Not a chance of that happening. I'm done with sympathising with their plight because their unwillingness to deal with the Trump regime is imperilling the whole world.

JD Vance over in Hungary endorsing their dictator and complaining about foreign election interference 🙄
1533
LiGuangMing1981 Apr 11, 2026 +424
It's only election interference when their opponents do it.
424
Fun_Success_3283 Apr 11, 2026 +66
This is what they do. They project, they accuse. No matter what you do, they will oppose it, and talk shit about it, and do it if it's convenient for them. They'll accuse you of doing things you aren't doing, or things they are doing or whatever. Forget about what Maga is saying. Focus on yourself, doing what you know is right, and fighting for that.
66
sisco98 Apr 11, 2026 +79
Yet Orban lost three more points after Vance’s visit. My guess is his note that he is willing to work with either w***** was not a straightforward endorsement…
79
Muted_Ad_906 Apr 11, 2026 +19
He’s also distracting from the very real Russian interference going on there
19
Sorqu Apr 11, 2026 +32
The best thing is 4 years ago during the previous election they accused the opposition coalition of being supported by outside sources, mostly the USA and they nicknamed them "dollar left". I guess there are good dollars and bad dollars, fidesz is obviously getting the good dollars. /s

89
Scarlet_Bard Apr 11, 2026 +663
Hungarians surely know that any “economic aid” from the USA would just go right into Orban’s pocket.
663
FluffyGreenThing Apr 11, 2026 +86
They also should be aware that whatever Trump says there’s absolutely zero percent chance of any money coming. Orban won’t get paid either. Trump NEVER pays anyone. He never has and he never will. Any money that he comes into contact with he will pocket for himself. Look at every single developer, contractor or builder he’s ever used. He stiffed them all. Many went out of business because of contact with him. He never pays anyone. He’s also the biggest liar there ever was. If he says money is coming, the opposite it true. He will find some way to enrich himself. His whole entire being is toxic. He is the absolute worst mankind has to offer. He’s pure greed and egotism personified.
86
Heisenberg_235 Apr 11, 2026 +9
I’ve always wondered why people keep working for him. This is so well known and yet he manages to get more people to keep working for his companies, who then don’t get paid. Why would you do it
9

we'll see if they know that in 2 days

292
NecessarySudden Apr 11, 2026 +45
Yeah, countries in need can't have USAID which literally were saving lives. Americans can't have healthcare and whatever but US surely have money to buy votes in Hungary because why? Russia doesn't have money to do it themselves anymore?
45
OriginalTangle Apr 11, 2026 +12
Ukraine dying is not his problem. A strong Europe - now that's a problem! But you have to wonder if there's isn't always going to be some EU leader who can be bought with foreign money. We have to change the laws so one country cannot hold the whole EU hostage anymore.
12

You think it was in doubt before this?
29
Ambitious-Way1156 Apr 11, 2026 +76
Trump loves Orban and Putin, as they are much like him in character, so he identifies with them. For similar reasons, Trump calls Kim Jung Un his friend, even though he has slaughtered hundreds of thousands of his own people.
76
Ambitious-Way1156 Apr 11, 2026 +22
Orban is pretty much a dictator, so Trump likes him and identifies with him. That is the basis of the aid given to him.
22

So putins b**** gives putins other b**** economic aid? Do i have this right?

Thats fairly blatant election interference. Support the dictator and well send a care package.
28
sachiprecious Apr 11, 2026 +28
He makes me sick. He offers aid to Hungary*, but he doesn't want to give aid to Ukraine, you know, the country that is being invaded and is suffering from tons of innocent people being killed while simply trying to live their lives in peace. *Only if it's led by Orban, who is anti-Ukraine. 🙄
28
LilLebowskiAchiever Apr 11, 2026 +11

So giving money to Ukraine and USAID locations are bad, but Argentina, Israel, and Hungary are ok?
24

Or the post office, Medicare, Social security, child day-care, health insurance, infrastructure,... Israel, Argentina, Hungry as well, all need our tax money so we have to sacrifice. If it wasn't so awful, it would be hilarious thinking about MAGA screaming for trump, their "America First" president.

JFC, they’re basically a Russian satellite state with Orban at the helm, who is a Putin lapdog. You know, the same Russia that gave Iran targeting data so they can hit US military personnel. And Trump is patting Putin on the head while he helps kill our guys.

Trump has two switches. Three actually. Bribe. Extort. Attack. That's it. Have to admit it's been a successful strategy so far. If he can bribe you (with something or flattery or false promises) great. He gets what he wants and you're on the take now so you can't speak out against him. It's his preferred option because it most helps with the illusion that he is a beloved person who everyone beloves super hard. If he can't bribe you, he extorts. Either with your past perfidy on his part or some embarrassment you have in your closet. Or, now that he's president, he can extort you with threats on behalf of the most powerful military in the world or extort a state in the U.S. that doesn't vote for him with investigations or withholding of due funds and resources. Or he threatens you with increases in militaristic enforcement in your city. Or he threatens individuals with prosecution or retribution. Or the withholding of federal contracts. Or lawsuits. He might prefer bribe but he's got absolutely no problem with extortion. Partly because it's the initial phases of... Attack. If you're immune to either bribes or extortion or it's clear you're his avowed enemy or a journalist that tells fact-based stories, he is going to attack you. And he has an impressive arsenal as the entirety of the federal government is clearly run by people whose mission it is to serve President Trump's needs alone. So he might prefer bribery as the main means of exacting leverage, he *loves* attacking. It is his most obvious current form of ecstatic pleasure. He is a dangerous man who is currently pulling off the single greatest criminal heist of all time as he loots the whole world.

This is a good sign. If the Americans and Russians are trying this hard to keep Orban in, him losing will be a great step forward for Europe and the free world.

"President known for not paying his debts promises he'll pay you aid if you help Russia, more at 9"

Strayed8492 Apr 11, 2026 +9
If it walks like a Russian asset and talks like a Russian asset. It’s a Russian asset.

EatLard Apr 11, 2026 +4
These promises are written in crayon. On toilet paper.

Who is interfering again? The EU?

FrankenPinky Apr 11, 2026 +4
That's what he did in Argentina.

grasshopper239 Apr 11, 2026 +4
We don't have any money to give. Middle and poor barely cover our military and interest payments and we don't tax our rich

rechoflex Apr 11, 2026 +3
Donald can’t even give the US economic aid. Never trust a pathologic liar and pedo at that

Anything but healthcare for Americans.

NoNefariousness5175 Apr 11, 2026 +4
Keep out of European affairs. What would Trump say if it was the other way around.
4
Haru1st Apr 11, 2026 +5
Didn’t he run on a campaign of NOT giving other countries aid?

Novel_Tea4378 Apr 11, 2026 +4
So... literally bribing another country to keep a Russian asset in place. This is awesome.
4
Low_Search_6667 Apr 11, 2026 +5
Wait, I thought we wanted to NOT give US money to foreign countries. What happened to that?
5
10Thousand_Hours Apr 11, 2026 +5
It’s so funny how Trump talks about the evil people secretly meddling in elections, while openly meddling in elections. F****** a******.

Time to kick Hungry out of EU, on the basis of documented multi-billion € fraud. Thry can join the Russia they love so bad, absolutely no one will miss them... Sorry cousins, time to prove you are not USSR anymore, we have had enough already...

Argentina, Hungary, who else gonna take your tax dollars?
3
itsaconspiraci Apr 11, 2026 +3
Putin wants Orban. Trump does as ordered and helps.
3
Mac62961 Apr 11, 2026 +3
This is ridiculous. No us president oR ANY leader should “ back” a candidate in another nation’s election.
3
Western-Corner-431 Apr 11, 2026 +3
The “economic aid” won’t help the people of Hungary. It will only fatten Orban’s wallet.
3
mobani Apr 11, 2026 +3
When is US going to get their house in order? WTF is this. Nobody from the free world wants Orban to continue. Tell me again how both of them are not Putins puppets?
3
Desperate-Hearing-55 Apr 11, 2026 +3
What do US wins on supporting Orban and Hungary? Nothing! Only Russia benefits by have Orban as theirs lapdog. Any doubts Trump is Russia asset and Putins dog?
3
ButterscotchOk5339 Apr 11, 2026 +3
America Last
3
Awkward_Squad Apr 11, 2026 +3
You can be damn sure ‘certain’ powerful forces are hard at work ready to see Orban return with a ‘healthy’ majority. Who’d want to be a Hungarian?
3
Consistent-Cap-9360 Apr 11, 2026 +3
America is a banana republic with a tinpot dictator.
3
Miserable-Ask5994 Apr 11, 2026 +3
F*** Trump. F*** Orban. This is ridiculous. Hope Hungary finally gets rid of Orban. But im sure Russia and USA interference in the election will pay of :(
3
Training_Agency_7696 Apr 11, 2026 +3
Isn't this election interference?
3
Duke_mm Apr 11, 2026 +3
Trump and Putin working side by side to strengthen Orban in an attempt to weaken Europe. How sweet 😋.
3
kikomir Apr 11, 2026 +3
They stopped economic aid to the whole world (USAID) because of possible corruption only in order to provide economic aid to parts of the world with 100% confirmed corruption.
3
Remarkable_Screen_88 Apr 11, 2026 +3
Guessing this isn't any kind of foreign interference in Hungary's elections or anything of the sort, right?
3
heavy-minium Apr 11, 2026 +3
I remember a time when people heavily critized/trolled me here at the notion of the U.S. interfering during his first term already with elections in Europe, with the goal of supporting all authoritarian and facists parties and make them rise to break the EU. Still gonna deny it, folks?
3
Glittering-Age-9549 Apr 11, 2026 +3
Again: WHY IS TRUMP HELPING PUTIN CONTROL EUROPE WHILE RUSSIA IS HELPING IRAN KILL AMERICAN SOLDIERS?!
3
best4444 Apr 11, 2026 +3
Which economic aid? I thought they do not even have money for day care in or medicare in USA. 🤣🤣🤣 He is the biggest liar on earth.
3
anal-itic_prober Apr 11, 2026 +3
F****** USA. Bunch of hypocrites meddling in elections of other countries.
3
Tdb713 Apr 11, 2026 +3
Hold on now, it thought it was EU countries that were trying to influence that election. It’s actually us? /s
3
Critical_Letterhead3 Apr 11, 2026 +3
Who’s voting for that. Our own country needs assistance more Talk to me after the elections
3
A_Nonny_Muse Apr 11, 2026 +3
Economic aid to dictators, but we have to cancel medicaid to fund his war.
