Making fuel from crops is a net loss. Cover that same ground in solar PV and you get way more net energy out.

Yea... but cars that sit with Ethanol in their gas tank degrade and have to be replaced faster. It's like subsidizing two industries: corporate owned farms and vehicle manufacturers.

I believe the technology connections guy showed that if the space we currently dedicate to ethanol was used for solar it would meet all our power needs.

Depends. You can use the plant matter that is discarded in some biofuels so if you're growing the crops anyway it may be beneficial.

Here's a study that puts some numbers to it:
https://www.cleanwisconsin.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Corn-Ethanol-Vs.-Solar-Analysis-V3-9-compressed.pdf
The net here is that the best ethanol for fuel program results in 50 times less vehicle miles per acre than the worst solar panels.
Maybe the producers of that study are biased.

Gas pumps have a sticker for 10% ethanol added. Most cars are not designed for higher than 10%.

You don't like paying more for less effective fuel that actually damages your engine? Won't someone please think of the billionaires?!

This is a gift link. Excerpt:
> President Trump on Friday [3/27/2026] released long-awaited quotas that dictate how much biofuel made from crops must be blended into the gasoline and diesel supply. The new rule increases biomass-based diesel—which is partly derived from soybeans—blending by more than 60%, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. It raises the biofuel requirement for all fuel by a lower percentage.
> The regulatory requirement for U.S. refiners to blend billions of gallons of biofuel into fuel is closely watched by corn and soybean farmers.
> It is also critical for companies such as Archer Daniels Midland, Bunge and Cargill, which buy crops from farmers and process grains and oilseeds into fuel, food ingredients and other products. ADM Chief Executive Juan Luciano said earlier this year that U.S. policy that enabled increased renewable diesel blending would help the company’s profits in 2026.
> [...]
> Consumers might not see much of an impact at the gas pump. Some biofuels supporters say blending more can lower fuel costs for Americans. Increased blends of renewable diesel probably won’t immediately impact American drivers, though higher ethanol contents in gas could help.

You know it’s really sad we don’t have a technology that could be promoted to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels… someone should really invent some sort of vehicle that used electrical power like a cordless drill! Or maybe some way to collect the power of wind, maybe could be built in open farm fields or out at sea so no one would see it.
The mean if the government is going to go to war to stop the flow of oil they really should think ahead and promote things that don’t use that oil.

The irony of trump. His war on iran is going to push forward the alternative fuels narrative. Despite him fighting against it for so long.
