I’m no wannabe dictator, but if I were hypothetically trying to maintain power over my regime, I’d probably try my best to stay on the good side of the servicemen and servicewomen of the military machine that props up the legitimacy of my said regime. *Antagonizing them*, though, is a bold strategy. Let’s see if it pays off!

Most of the army is going to look at this and go "sucks to be you!". They're are booting out highly respected members on Hegseth's demand and you aren’t seeing anything beyond a meager grumbling at best.

There are civilian police/guardsmen at some bases who scan IDs at the gate. I wonder if it was them or actual military.

Ihor_90 3 days ago +75
I read in another article it was the actual military officer who called DHS and ICE. So they’re happy to throw their own under the bus.

Worked Fort Riley as one of those for a few years. We're trained to recognize fake documents and get the MPs involved if we suspect that or dui type things. There are/were (this was 18 years ago) a TON of brown folk just trying to get on base and work so you'd come across it more often than you'd think. That being said all I ever did was flip the car around and tell them to drop their buddy at the gas station before they got in trouble 🤷‍♀️

They were literally on base to do her DEERS paperwork that all dependants have to do.

Both are true from what I can tell, she started the naturalization process under Biden when she came of age 4 years ago, and they were set to go to the DEERS office right after the ceremony. Naturalization is the slowest legal process by far. Some of the people pulled by ICE from the citizenship ceremony back in December spent almost a decade and thousands of dollars to get to that point.

Its fort Polk, it could have been literally any of the civilians who work on base who called it in. I also could have been anyone one of the people she was living next too. Military spouses in my experience are bored and prone to drama. So in a maga world, im sure that shit is amped up to 11

Then the kids get infected by it too. I went to school near a base, and the majority of the military kids were elitist asswipes who knew the school would bend over for the military dollars. Obligatory "not all of them were awful shitstains riding daddy's coattails," of course.

And their commander in chief, a criminal and a pedophile, obviously unfit for service, incompetent and deranged, violated the constitution several times so far and even attempted a coup d'état. He regularly announced war crimes in the last few weeks, FFS. And the US soldiers ? did exactly nothing. Luckily they didn't take a very specific oath at enlistment ...ops. They are not automatons, I agree. The word you are looking for is "cowards" or "hypocrites". "Accomplices" is a valid alternative.
45
chenz1989 3 days ago +9
I kind of get it though. It would be one thing if the executive orders you to do something and the judiciary / legislative says "no, that's illegal" It would be another if the executive gives you an order, the judiciary agrees and so does the legislative. Disobeying at that point essentially becomes mutiny or even a coup.

Th1rte3n1334 3 days ago +78
While it might hurt what the voters actually do it echos their “conservative values.” This is one of those things where they don’t practice what they preach. However what they preach is held more dear to them than what they actually practice and therefore they will still vote on the side that upholds their perceived values and not their practices.
78
whut-whut 3 days ago +28
> upholds their values They don't actually hold values, they hold allegiance. That's how Trump's been getting away with so much nonsense. They don't care and aren't curious what the consequences are for any decision nor action Trump makes, so they're just blank checks that cheer, "Whatever Trump wants! Yay!" even when it's a gutpunch to their own self-interests.
28

I've always wondered if this is because of how conservatives constantly talk about their "support for the military" without the context that they are actually only interested in supporting the military industry, but the actual humans that serve (during or after their service). As a vet, do you have any insight? How do Trump supporting vets square the constant erosion of benefits under conservative leadership with claims of being pro- military?

I suspect that if the majority still exists, it is slim.  There's a bias produced by the vocal, excited young recruits being vocal supporters - but "who makes the most noise" is not a representative population sample.
11
ii_V_I_iv 3 days ago +27

A lot of jobs that Americans do are significantly more important than soldiers. Idk maybe I'm an outlier but I particularly enjoy having electricity, clean water, trash removal, food available in stores. Not too concerned about getting blown up by an Iranian missile at the moment, maybe after lunch.
8
OneTabbyBraincell 3 days ago +5
Arguably the last "good" war the us fought in was WWII. Why is anyone thanking soldiers for their "service"? What service? US soft power and trade did far more to keep Americans safe than the military and Trump torpedoed that in a year. Now you may actually need soldiers to keep you safe, and it's a bunch of Trump voting gumbies who can't even keep their own spouses safe? Good f****** luck, America.

I think we're so far from this capability now in America it seems impossible. We'd have to completely restructure our educational requirements, and get rid of things like Fox News which are actually just meant as entertainment and outrage farming. As long as a huge majority of this country is uneducated and proud of that fact, we're in a downward spiral I believe.
97
DiamondHandsToUranus 3 days ago +51
'Meant as entertainment' is just another lie they tell it court.. Fox's function is propaganda to brainwash the masses. People who are capable of critical thinking can see right through it. They still LARP as a news organization. "It's only for entertainment" are weasel words they used to cover their asses when they're sued. Fox is a rancid pack of sleaze weasels in 'we're one of the flock' clothing

I feel like the only solution is to split the country into several smaller ones. Then let people move to which one they want to. Some will become leading 1st world countries, others will turn into corrupt 3rd world shitholes.  It’s harsh, but sometimes, a limb is too gangrenous for antibiotics to save, and the only thing you can do is amputate it to stop it spreading to the rest of the body.

It’s Steven Miller. Trump is mentally ill, and has the attention span of a house fly. Stephen Miller and the rest of them are implementing multiple agendas without oversight, and Trump is so out of the loop he’s getting autopenned into oblivion.
43
whut-whut 3 days ago +11
Trump in the loop and giving oversight would do nothing differently. He may only be seeing what Miller is doing on Fox News these days and thinking "...I did that? I guess I did!" and clap along, but even at his most lucid, he was completely for the deporting of -all- foreigners and minorities while using the 'illegal' label as cover. Revoking the citizenship of minority citizens to deport them was a thing he was talking about even back in his dementia-addled first term.

I have never been more disappointment in the Dems. People like Obama and every other democratic powerhouse should be going on every social media outlet and decrying this joke of a government. Take advantage of this MAGA fracture. Drive a truck through it. Go on these conservative podcast and make your point. I barely hear a peep. Reds have the social media game cornered. Every time Cheeto dust answers questions from NYT or CNN, he pretty much insults the reporter, calling them fake news. Calls them piggy. Pretty much refuses to answer the question, but goes on a tangent about radial left fake news and yet, no one calls him out on it. Where is K Harris? At least Newsome tries his best but beyond that, I find the response laughable. I may be wrong, but that's how I'm seeing things. I'm tired of that "they go low, we go high" BS.

If they cheated, it was by a few percentage points. Turnout of democrats was much lower than in 2020. And part of that can be blamed directly on Harris, The democrat party and Biden for refusing to back out gracefully. Plus hard as it may be to believe, there were plenty of Latinos voting for Trump because Harris was a woman.
14
GettingDumberWithAge 3 days ago +15
Sure you didn't. I personally don't find it hard to believe at all that Americans freely elected Trump again, but I understand that an American desperately clinging to the idea that Americans aren't completely morally bankrupt people would resort to conspiracy theories to soothe their conscience. E: oh wow -5 in 3 minutes! Americans have their extra stupid hats on today. Look you'll never be able to move forward as a democracy if you're unable to acknowledge the rot in your society. But hey I expect nothing from Americans and somehow still end up disappointed.

Exactly Miss me with all those takes that imply that MAGA legit thought Trump was the peace guy, that they got tricked into it, that it's about anything other than bigotry and cruelty, that they're turning on him, any of that. I mean, people can't even talk about his abysmal, truly awful first term without making it sound like it was okay and this one suddenly got bad, for f***'s sake. It's been a decade of this, how are we still even having these conversations. I've never seen a single person in my life time be as clearly and consistently awful, about anything and everything, as Trump, and somehow it feels like a majority of the discourse around him, even discourse against him, pulls its punches.

This woman was brought to the US as an infant. She applied for DACA only for it to be suspended. She went to college, teaches Sunday school, married a Marine and was trying to become a citizen through the legal process. Then Trump’s goons snatch her off a military base and are deporting her to Honduras. Just a reminder, when they say they are deporting the criminal illegal aliens, this is who they are talking about. They define criminal as ‘anyone breaking immigration law’. This administration is deplorable, and not deplored nearly enough.

Wait, did they remove automatic citizenship through marriage?
5
FoeHammer99099 3 days ago +42
It's never been automatic, though you do get fast-tracked (not that fast).
42
ellastory 3 days ago +32
There was no automatic citizenship but there was a path for it previously that protected military members that doesn’t apply anymore under the current administration

Who said they voted for Trump? The wife was saved from deportation when she was kid, thanks to DACA, which was a program started by Obama.

If you can give Trump 5 million dollars for his Golden Visa Card, you can.
15
Jonathan_the_Nerd 3 days ago +17
Trump's wife violated immigration law by working in the US before she obtained a work visa. She came in on a tourist visa and later upgraded to a wok visa. Back then, nobody cared about small infractions like that. Nowadays, it'd probably be enough to get her deported.

Such a great recruiting tool. Join the military, we will deport your family and friends while you sacrifice your life for big daddy government. The movie “Spartacus” becomes a documentary rather than a work of fiction.

> The movie “Spartacus” becomes a documentary rather than a work of fiction. To Clausewitz, war was a tool of politics. To Trump, politics, and thus war, is a tool for TV ratings. In conclusion, US service members fight for TV ratings, which is not that different from gladiators like Spartacus fighting in the Arena.

GrumpyKitten514 3 days ago +42
this isnt exclusive to women either. Trump actually does poll extremely well with a lot of hispanic countries dealing with border issues. we were on a business trip in the DR and our driver was talking to me about how they love trump because "he would be so hard on the Haitians illegally crossing into DR" and if anyone knows dominicans, they hate Haitians even more than 1800s white folks hated their slaves. also a lot of those countries have that macho bravado bs, they love all this rhetoric.
42
NothingLikeCoffee 3 days ago +25
Basically every country in Latin American hates the country south of them.  When I was in Mexico they were relentlessly shit talking DR's/Guatemalan. Similar in Costa Rica.
25
QuizzicalDuke 3 days ago +15
A bunch of Hispanic countries also think they are white and represent as such. Hopefully not the woman in the article, but I know Hondurans can think like this and it wouldn’t surprise me if she did. Also why Haitians tend to be targeted since they are typically black. Spoiler alert: white people don’t view Hispanic, Latinos or Latina, as white people lol.

Yup. My maga bro was in this situation 15 years ago or so, except his wife was 20 when she came to the States, not 2. They eventually had to leave the country and come back to get everything in order, but she was never deported of course. Now he and my whole maga fam denies she was ever illegal to begin with, like he forgot we were living together at the time and I was literally at the club with him when they first met. She was very much illegal, even owed a coyote from what she said at the time. Now she isnt full on maga, thankfully. Yet she opts to be quietly supportive of my dipshit brother, though.

I’m not arguing with you at all, I’m just dumbstruck by this kind of thing. How can decent people lack the brain power to think simple concepts through from point A to point B? Like, I’m not smart at all and I can see how they’re shooting themselves in the foot with that bullshittery. It seems like it has to be willful ignorance, but I guess brainwashing makes sense, too

ICE are proud boys, white supremacists, dropouts and rejects of all kinds. They are unfit for a real job, they are hired goons to serve as Trump's gestapo. They kidnap, abuse, and traffick their victims. Sending people to foreign torture prisons without warrant. They murder civilians in cold blood. They are traitors to our country and traitors to humanity!

According to the Pew Research Center, six in ten registered voters with current or previous military service reported favorable views of Trump at the time of the 2024 election. So the majority voted for Trump, who promised mass deportation. And they were fine with that as long as they had special privileges for immigrants married to military people. Now they are treating military spouses like they treat everyone else and that’s their issue. What happened to this lady is not okay but the outrage should not be because she married some guy in the military.

a 2022 policy went lenient n military service members, which Trump revoked. Too bad these things don't make the news. Copy and paste to your browser for the memo [https://www.ice.gov/doclib/foia/policy/10039-3.pdf](https://www.ice.gov/doclib/foia/policy/10039-3.pdf)

During the Battle of Hurtgen Forest in WWII, a Japanese American soldier was captured and taken to a POW camp in Germany. His parents had been interned by the US government, which is why he joined up to begin with. He said his first thought in the camp was, “I’m in an enemy country surrounded by barbed wire. My parents are in a friendly country…. surrounded by barbed wire.”

No time to do his leaders book any kind of deployment training... and this is just the first. No telling how the world works anymore.

I wonder if this is a litmus test for the armed forces; i.e., how far would you go for your Commander in Chief? The Bible is chocked full of tests and tortures to validate your devotion to The Almighty; why not America? Lose your job? How about, lose your job and your house? How about a limb, eyesight, hearing, sanity? How about your spouse? How about your kids? How about your kids *and* your spouse? In the words that Jesse Plemons' character in 'Civil War' said to Joel, 'Okay. What kind of American are you? You don't know?'
