Everyone study Vietnam to truly understand what’s about to happen. Understand the slogan “light at the end of the tunnel” and the “credibility gap” because you are going to hear a lot of variations of that over the next few years

Vietnam didn’t have anywhere near the capacity to inflict harm on the U.S. that Iran does. They could only kill the soldiers the U.S. was willing to send over, Iran is showing us they can threaten the very foundation of the U.S.’s global hegemony before you even begin counting U.S. casualties.

Not only that but Iran has double the population that vietnam did, meaning more men they can draft, and it's clear the people don't hate the government nearly as much as we have been led to believe, and our destruction of civilian infrastructure hasn't endeared us to anyone

Everybody hates their government... Until someone else's government shows up.

I think they hate their government plenty, until the U.S. hands the regime a giant unifying gift in the form of missile strikes on children.

This war is stupid, but that statement is a huge fuckin' stretch.

Is it?
Every single American ally is now paying more for fuel.
And getting nothing out of this war?

Philo_Publius1776Mar 30, 2026

The war is 1 month old. It's way too early to make any claims about its impact on American hegemony. Paying more for fuel isn't itself a threat to hegemony after a month. E.g., if in a year or two, the US succeeds becoming a hegemonic power in the Persian gulf by toppling Iran's regime and ending its ability to threaten anyone at all, then energy prices fall through the floor for America's allies.
It's also possible the US loses, we find out Iran is stronger than thought, and they become a nuclear power and oil hegemon in the region, in which case claims like OP's will make more sense. Given Trump's ability to f*** up everything he touches, it wouldn't be shocking.
But anyone making grand claims about America's place in the world at this stage is just huffing farts.

What makes meaningful success in Iran more likely than it was in Afghanistan, or even Iraq for that matter, and in a matter of weeks instead of two decades?
Like yeah, it’d be really great for our oil prices if we took over Iran. That’s a colossal if, though, and our economy is in a pretty precarious place still stabilizing from COVID and navigating the AI bubble.
Iran doesn’t have to become a nuclear hegemon to hurt us, and in particular hurt our global hegemony (which is significantly built on control of that region and things like petro dollar trading)

To be fair how many American allies are assisting this stupid war? American hegemony at this point may already be dead. Kinda happens when you proclaim your allies are ripping you off.

No sir, I have spoken to knowledgable people, including yourself quite recently ;-) They have educated me, being very clear on this point: the US cannot lose this.

I think a lot of people joined the military after we pulled out of Afghanistan thinking we'd had enough instigating wars for awhile and that it was the best choice out of a bunch of bad choices to improve their lives. Many that joined the infantry are probably f****** excited however. I've lived in San Diego my whole life and I know a lot of Marines. This is one of those things that the general population has a hard time understanding. The people that joined to get into a certain MoS (military occupational speciality) actually want this. They often don't care if it's justified. For some it's understandable (not justifiable) - if you train day in and day out for literally years to fight, psychologically you'll start to feel that it's a waste of time and effort if you don't get the chance. Jarhead (2005) and Generation Kill (2008) are great to watch if you want a crash course in understanding this mindset. My sources though are actual vets that are friends of mine and have spoken very candidly to me about this topic.
It's a terrible reference in many ways but I'm often reminded of the Jack Reacher movie with Tom Cruise.
"There are four types of people who join the military: family trade, patriots, those needing a job, and those wanting a legal means of killing."

Right now, it feels the media doesn’t want to know.

It's remarkable how much leeway Republicans give to Trump. The amount of economic and individuals' lives hinging on Trump's attention span and craving of a tv ratings-high Iran war season finale scenario is pretty high.
The amount of attention Trump has on the war plans is limited by how much he's thinking about his cognitive test results compared to other people he doesn't like, and some hotel convention center he's cobbling on to the white house.

The propaganda is strong in the US, probably even stronger than in Russia where they still need a good old-fashioned police state on top of it all to make people do the government's bidding.

The most incompetent administration in history is deploying troops to the Middle East and haven’t a clue on what to do. This is going to be bad and every country is going to feel the effect.
Every single American needs to be expelled from the rest of the world. I wish leaders had the balls to not let any Americans into their country until they figure their shit out. Morons ruining the planet because someone had a weird laugh. Unbelievable.
