What is the point of this blockade? To ensure only Russian oil can be sold?

Seems like the point of Trump being President is to help Russia in all things and push the rest of the world towards China.
If you wrote a political thriller 20 years ago and basically made the theory that there was a president elected that was groomed by Russia.. and you just wrote exactly what Trump has done the entire time... people would think it was too obvious and ridiculous of a premise that people would actually vote for him a second time.

China is only softly involved.
China is very happy watching the USA and Russia use up their military might, aka missiles.

It’s not a full blockade. A true blockade would mean no ships in or out of Cuba, which isn’t the case.
The U.S. *pressures* other countries like Mexico and Venezuela to not sell or send oil to Cuba (which they currently can’t afford to buy, so it would need to be subsidized or donated).
Russia has a higher tolerance to this political pressure, so they send oil anyways.
30
foolmetwiceagainMar 29, 2026

“The United States Coast Guard is allowing a Russian tanker full of crude oil to reach Cuba…after months of an effective oil blockade by the Trump administration.”
It’s an “oil blockade”, except for nations fighting Ukraine or providing aid to Iran.
43
KhamvomMar 29, 2026
+4
Yes, it’s an “oil blockade”.
But again, the U.S. uses political pressure to prevent countries from sending oil in the first place. They weren’t actually preventing oil ships from going to Cuba b/c nobody was sending any to begin with.
Russia has a bigger tolerance to this and sends oil anyways. The oil is also donated/subsidized, so they’re not making a profit off it either.
4
ComradeJohnSMar 29, 2026

I don’t think you are understanding what the other guy’s issue is. it’s an oil blockade allowing our literal enemies oil in exclusively.
4
KhamvomMar 29, 2026
+14
I understand it and this is where geopolitics gets complicated. Our enemies have the power to push oil into Cuba. We have the power to stop it. What’s the correct move?
Stopping it risks escalating tensions with Russia (and can technically be interpreted as an act of war under international/naval law)
Letting it through creates the current image.
Edit: u/Ezpz_commentz, attacking me, then immediately blocking me afterwards is pretty pathetic lol. If you wanna engage, engage. Don’t be afraid of discussion.

Russia donated this oil shipment on humanitarian grounds, so they’re not actually making a profit from it. Cuba itself can’t actually afford to buy it either b/c their economy is in free-fall.
The U.S. puts political + financial pressure on other countries (Mexico, Venezuela, etc) to not send oil shipments, Russia does it anyways b/c they have a higher tolerance to this pressure.

I think people are making way too much of a conspiracy out of his actions.
The banal truth is that Trump sees politics fully as some kind of interpersonal game between country leaders. He likes Putin, so he makes concessions, he doesn't like Mexico and Sheinbaum so they get the stick - no need for any conspiracy, Trump is just really dumb and easily manipulated (and has a view of the state as an extension of the head of state like some monarch from the times of absolutist monarchies).

He likes Putin because Biden and the Democrats hated him, so Putin = good. Zelenskyy also hates Putin, and Zelenskyy refused to make up dirt about Hunter Biden for him for the 2020 election, so Putin double good.
No matter how Putin humiliates Trump, Trump will go to sleep, wake up tomorrow, and the only thing he'll remember is that he likes Putin. Because he's a petty, vindictive, dementia-addled f****** moron.
There are no tapes. He's just that stupid.

It's 100% this. At this point, no blackmail from Putin would be good leverage on Trump, as he could simply claim it's AI or fake news, and his followers would believe him, no matter the fidelity of the actual evidence. Besides, there's plenty horrific allegations already against him in the Epstein files and that has literally not moved the needle a single iota. The only thing that makes any sense in explaining his behavior is what you're saying: Trump just likes Putin, and will do anything to please him, even if it costs American soldiers their lives.

I'm surprised why people still feel the need to psychoanalyze everything Trump does and turn into some weird complex 4D chess game.
He likes dictators and autocracies that can just do "whatever they want", because that's what he aspires to do. Look at how he treats Xi , Putin, Gulf state heads, even a puppet like Lukashenko. Then compare to it to how treats UK or Canada, undoubtedly US's closest allies. If you didn't know any history, you would've though the alliances are completely reversed here.
Anyone who doesn't see this either in massive denial or is actually OK with that, because they view the world through a very similar lens.

There's an idiom in systems analysis that I keep coming back to lately. It's deceptively simple sounding, but it's one of those things that is useful to chew on a bit: The purpose of a system is what it does.
You can go back and forth and argue about the _intended_ purpose of Trump's blockade of Cuba. Tons of political theory to spin there. But empirically, what it does, that we can see, is give Russia monopoly access to the Cuban energy market, with no competition from Venezuela or Mexico or anybody else.
Now, maybe you think there was some other intention originally. But you can observe what the blockade _does._ And you can be sure if what it does what considered a big problem by the people who put it in place, they would take steps to make it do something else.

Shall I prove myself by attending a rally that barely makes the news, leaving me open to arrest, bodily harm, or death from agents provocateur, probably ICE?
Maybe I could take up arms against the regime, but then I would be working alone, I would be killed alone, and I will have accomplished nothing. In fact, I would be a martyr FOR the regime, as they could point to me as an example of the “violent radical leftist” and use my actions to justify further injustice.
When you say “you Americans” you’re addressing me and people like me scattered across 50 states and nearly 10 million km^2.

This is good news however it’s just another gift to Trumps papa Putin. How about just ceasing this human rights violation of a blockade all together?

I for one am happy that the Cuban people can get oil to power their hospitals.
It would be much better if they could get it from a more moral government, alas...

\- 25th amendment will never happen with this cabinet
\- Impeachment and removal failed twice already
\- Midterms are a lifetime away at this rate
\- Health doesn't seem to be fading as much as we fantasize that it is
\- Peaceful protests are nice but not enough
what does that leave us with?

Tell me again how Trump isn't Putin's puppet
Not that I mind in this instance. I hope Cuba gets some relief, but this makes absolutely no sense considering how Trump has been treating and talking about Cuba lately.
Weird how Trump can be all tough with every single other country in the world, but when Russia or Israel shows up he inexplicably rolls over and shows his belly.
Almost like they have something on him.

Somebody dropped-a-dime & had Donnie-boy make a call to Putin.
Judging by the comment section, it makes it sound like an island nation that desperately needed oil because of the US taking out their previous suppliers (Venezuela) and putting an embargo on them finally getting some oil is a bad thing.
Guys, it's an island nation without oil, whether or not you like its government not being allowed to buy oil is a mass humanitarian crisis, be it hospitals, food supply chains, water, etc. For the citizens of that island, thank god they are at least getting something.

Its obviously a good thing Cuba finally got some Oil. But people are laughing at how the US has been preventing Mexico and Venezuela from giving Cuba oil, even telling the media they wouldn't let the Russian tankers help Cuba either. Yet he did exactly that, he let the tankers in despite all his yapping, which just further add proof that Trump is just a Putin vassal. Im very happy Cuba can get some relief, whatever form it takes, but its hard to ignore the strangeness of the situation.
23
distinctidiotMar 29, 2026
You're correct that it's absurd that they let the Russian tanker in, of all things; however, personally i'll take whoever is willing so Cuba at least gets some relief. Think people are also misunderstanding that the pressure the USA put on others to not send oil was mostly economic and not military, which is why countries like Mexico struggled to send it, US has bery little economic leverage over Russia, since the US is mostly using economic leverage it had to be a country like Russia to begin with.
