Allowed to pass because it’s last port was technically UAE? They did specify only those leaving or arriving via Iranian ports so maybe this was a way of testing the waters?

Merlord 5 days ago +1231
Trump said they were blocking the whole strait but as always he was full of shit and the US clarified shortly after that they were only blocking Iran ports

If you can look at the notice to mariner issued by Centcom, the whole thing is tidily done within the scope of the law as described in the US Naval Warfare manual.

Yeah, it was a kind of surreal moment when Trump announced something and I knew I had to wait to hear from Iran to learn the truth. Crazy.

Fun fact, the nuclear football was removed from the President's detail twice in history. The first time being during the few months of Nixon's Presidency. The second being the last two months of Trump's first Presidency.

If we took Trump posts at face value, a bunch of democrats would have been charged with sedition already and Iran would have been bombed back to the "stone age" as he so eloquently put it. The actual *military* announcement is more limited than a full blockade of the straits. Looks like they are restricting the bockade to iranian ports themselves. Edit: replied to wrong comment, but leaving this here

Hell, the concept of a battleship was borderline onsolete in WW2. Basically their main role was fighting other battleships, blowing up land based targets (which cruisers could also do) and getting sunk by planes. By the time guided missiles entered the picture, they were a joke. The only reason we ever dragged them out of storage after WW2 was when we wanted an artillery platform and didn't want to use airstrikes.

Did anyone even expect them to block US-sanctioned ships? Also I really want to see what happens if they block Chinese ships
4
FeeHot5876 5 days ago +10
A Chinese ship has already turned around
10
wyvernx02 5 days ago +21
All 3 ships were going to or from non-iranian ports so aren't subject to the blockade.

17
thefoodiedentist 5 days ago +28
Allow? They cant stop anything. Dont even have rights or ability to block ships. They are not even close to ship routes cuz they need to stay out of iranian attack range.
28
botle 5 days ago +29
They don't have any rights to sink small boats in the Caribbean either. These ships are just larger targets. Oh, and owned by richer countries.
29
imtourist 5 days ago +2
Yeah the US has killed far,far more people on the high-seas this year than the Iranians have. This whacked another boat a few days ago without any sort of due process, or even identification.
2
botle 5 days ago +7
This is why hitting those small boats was a much bigger issue than people realized. I mean of course in addition to killing the civilians on them without us even being sure who they were, which is bad enough. It gets people used to breaking international law, and increases the tolerance for even bigger crimes in the future. By any actor, not just by the US.
7
Scriefers 5 days ago +37
Don't have to stop them within range of Iran when they leave port... Every ship everywhere is very well tracked.

>They cant stop anything A modern tanker has a crew of <20. All you need to stop it without sinking it is to fly a helicopter with a squad of Marines out to it and take the ship's officers into custody. Or have you missed the Russian ghost fleet ships that were seized in the last few months?
41
FairDinkumMate 5 days ago +5
That's an act of war against whichever nation's flag the ship is sailing.
5
Faiakishi 5 days ago +15

15

18

68
A_Nonny_Muse 5 days ago +34
Two sovereign nations, actually.
34
Thesmokingcode 5 days ago +25
This is going to be pedantic so I'm sorry for that but its not. Piracy is the act of a "private individual" robbing, attacking or detaining a ship. It cannot be piracy if its a military operation sanctioned by a nation.
25
the-rood-inverse 5 days ago +8
Actually as has been pointed out we have to start to delve into the murky waters of privateering and corsairs which are state sanctioned. But by that point we have lost so much of the moral high ground it’s not worth continuing.
8
Thesmokingcode 5 days ago +20
Wasn't trying to argue a moral high ground, just the actual meaning of piracy.
20
Ok_Tutor_5544 5 days ago +3
So the US starts seizing citizens and ships of other countries? Where do we keep them? What process do we have for returning them? Do we force nations to pay us for their release? Iran has leverage over stopping ships because they literally hit any tanker with drones that tries to pass. They could care less because Trump forced them into a corner and they believe this war is threatens their existence. Going down to their level will destroy whatever political influence the US has left while not making any difference in the overall war. The Republicans have already thrown the midterms, at this rate, they will throw the general election as economic impacts will go well into 2027, probably 2028. And look at Cuba. Apparently we have a blockage on them, yet Russian tankers are dropping off oil. The US isn't going to start conflicts with China and India. Maybe we will stop the tankers of some third world nation that is easily intimidated.
3
couldhaveebeen 5 days ago +13
>So the US starts seizing citizens and ships of other countries? What do you mean starts? They've been doing it already. Even off top dome, I remember like a year or two ago the US just casually took over an Iranian tanker and just took all of the oil.
13
Old_Wallaby_7461 5 days ago +4
>So the US starts seizing citizens and ships of other countries? Where do we keep them? What process do we have for returning them? Exactly the same process that the US (and all of European NATO, increasingly) uses with the Russian ghost fleet. >Apparently we have a blockage on them, yet Russian tankers are dropping off oil. We do not, there are no ships enforcing a blockade.
4
Ok_Tutor_5544 5 days ago +7
The same ghost fleet that flies the gabon flag or whatever, running oil for a sanctioned country? Neither India or China are sanctioned, stopping their vessels would cause political incidents, no other countries are coming to assist.
7
torlesse 5 days ago +2
There is a very big difference between Russian and Chinese ships though. Russia has little to no cards to play in the international area, while China got plenty.
2
andynormancx 5 days ago +3
That was true for the last few weeks. But they now have at least two destroyers in the area, as they popped into the gulf a couple of days ago, turned on their AIS so everyone could see they were there and then popped out again. In the announcement of the blockade from the US military (not the rambling nonsense from Trump) they made it clear that the enforcement of the blockade would be happening well away from the straits and therefore out of Irans easy access. So if this tanker went through the straits recently it isn’t yet in the area where the US assets will be waiting to do the enforcement.
3
rhino369 5 days ago +7
Of course the US has the ability to block ships. F-35s are patrolling the strait at all times.
7
jayrocksd 5 days ago +8
The US isn't attacking commercial shipping with F-35s. They would just fast rope a couple dozen marines onto it and attempt to persuade them to change course.
8

This is what I understand too. The US have declared vessels going to and from an Iranian port will be stopped. China - who gets oil from Iran have said yeah nah. This has a lot of potential to go bad very fast. I’m hoping that whoever has navel command knows what they are doing. On both sides. Because this US administration sure as hell doesn’t.

Xi and the CCP have made the century of humiliation a big thing in chinese education and propaganda, meaning that they as a country will absolutely not tolerate the US stopping a chinese ship. It would very likely end in a blockade of taiwan or some other action

Trump announced/commenced blockade, Chinese defense ministry stated: ‘Chinese ships continue to move in and out of the waters of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz, and has opened it to us.’ @Middle_East_spectator This happens. Bluff called.

CryptoThroway8205 4 days ago +8
2 ships that stopped at an Iranian port made it through the blockade >Five other vessels had sailed through the strait since the blockade began at 1400 GMT on Monday. These comprised two other chemical and gas tankers, two dry bulk vessels and the Ocean Energy cargo ship that docked at Iran's Bandar Abbas port. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/us-sanctioned-chinese-tanker-passes-strait-hormuz-despite-us-blockade-data-shows-2026-04-14/ Reuters suggests it could be an intermittent blockade.
8
SituationIll5763 5 days ago +43
This word in this context is confusing, no matter how you spin it I could mean either. Were these ships allowed and therefore sanctioned, or were they part of an economically sanctioned country? Is it both?
43
robothawk 5 days ago +37
The ships are from companies that are sactioned by the US, but being sanctioned does not mean being subject to the blockade. Only ships heading to/from Iran are interdicted.
37
coltoncruise81 5 days ago +9
What does sanctioned mean then, if it doesn't mean not allowed to travel?
9
Paraparo 5 days ago +11
Typically, sanctions are a ban on your own citizens from trading with the sanctioned entity, in the more general sense. So if that tanker was sanctioned by the US, you couldn't buy oil off them. But that doesn't mean the default response is to take any active actions against them in open waters. While it has happened before, it's more of the exception.
11
hi_imjoey 5 days ago +41
I understand what the article is saying based on context, but it still makes me chuckle when I read an article whose entire meaning is based around a contronym. “Like, yeah, obviously the ships whose passage is sanctioned by the US won’t be affected by a US blockade” /s

Regardless of what the truth is, that it's technically not a full blockade, doesn't matter. He announced this as a full blockade and it was mass reported as a full blockade. So going back to add clarifying questions means d*** as most people who saw him say it was a full blockade are not going to see the actual details for it from us cronies. So now ANY reporting of ships going through will be viewed as yet another failure of the US to the average person. Optics are terrible, terrible idea to begin with, then to report ships going through, oof.

It left a port in the UAE! The blockade is meant to only stop ships going to or coming from Iranian ports... If you want America to attack every sanctioned vessels out there, tell those sanctioned vessels to sail in the Caribbean, geez... Seriously though, making f****** mountains outta ant hills with all this information, those lazy journalists.. These ships are not what the blockade is for, and while now is probably a good chance to catch them as they squeeze on by the blockade, they're not stateless/illicitly registered vessels like those boarded by America in the Caribbean prior. That would be internationally illegal and a big no-no pissing off major contenders. Nah nah, see here... This blockade against Iranian shipping is perfectly legal, see, 'cuz its in the name of War... See?...
