Allowed to pass because it’s last port was technically UAE? They did specify only those leaving or arriving via Iranian ports so maybe this was a way of testing the waters?
1615
Merlord Apr 14, 2026 +1231
Trump said they were blocking the whole strait but as always he was full of shit and the US clarified shortly after that they were only blocking Iran ports
1231
GorumGamer Apr 14, 2026 +253
If you can look at the notice to mariner issued by Centcom, the whole thing is tidily done within the scope of the law as described in the US Naval Warfare manual.
253
FeeHot5876 Apr 14, 2026 +222
People put way too much faith into what Trump says vs what’s actually being done

soothukundi Apr 14, 2026 +136
Imagine believing a guy who has history of lying, manipulating and bankrupting over a dozen businesses.
136
Xivvx Apr 14, 2026 +123
Imagine not being able to trust that the US President means what they say.
123
BadmiralHarryKim Apr 14, 2026 +6
Yeah, it was a kind of surreal moment when Trump announced something and I knew I had to wait to hear from Iran to learn the truth. Crazy.
6
ale-nerd Apr 14, 2026 +20
Why imagine? We live it this way. You gonna imagine Nixon too?
20
ragnaroksunset Apr 14, 2026 +26
Like... there's a reason Nixon's name is dripping with infamy.
26
elementzn30 Apr 14, 2026 +13
And all that despite Nixon having been an objectively better President than Trump
13
NiteOwl421 Apr 14, 2026 +8
Fun fact, the nuclear football was removed from the President's detail twice in history. The first time being during the few months of Nixon's Presidency. The second being the last two months of Trump's first Presidency.
8
ragnaroksunset Apr 14, 2026 +4
That's the thing about secular decline, even a low point in the past might be better than the status quo today.
4
IPissExcellentThrows Apr 14, 2026 +3
Well that's been true for a long time. It's just the percent of things we can believe is at an all time low by a long shot.
3
amateur_mistake Apr 14, 2026 +26
It's impressive that he is still doing it. Like, he made himself head of the Kennedy Center and within a year it has been shut down.

nah just the latter

Exactly. It’s just that sometimes, being a complete f****** indoor can fool some people into thinking you’re secretly a genius. But no. You’re still a complete f****** idiot.

johnnycyberpunk Apr 14, 2026 +12
> done within the scope of the law as described in the US Naval Warfare manual. Well I guess Heggsy didn't fire *all* the military lawyers.
12
Thunderclone_1 Apr 14, 2026 +57
If we took Trump posts at face value, a bunch of democrats would have been charged with sedition already and Iran would have been bombed back to the "stone age" as he so eloquently put it. The actual *military* announcement is more limited than a full blockade of the straits. Looks like they are restricting the bockade to iranian ports themselves. Edit: replied to wrong comment, but leaving this here

Mattna-da Apr 14, 2026 +19

Hell, the concept of a battleship was borderline onsolete in WW2. Basically their main role was fighting other battleships, blowing up land based targets (which cruisers could also do) and getting sunk by planes. By the time guided missiles entered the picture, they were a joke. The only reason we ever dragged them out of storage after WW2 was when we wanted an artillery platform and didn't want to use airstrikes.

Did anyone even expect them to block US-sanctioned ships? Also I really want to see what happens if they block Chinese ships
4
FeeHot5876 Apr 14, 2026 +10
A Chinese ship has already turned around
10
wyvernx02 Apr 14, 2026 +21
All 3 ships were going to or from non-iranian ports so aren't subject to the blockade.
21
TheJiggie Apr 14, 2026 +17
The goal posts are always moving with this Administration
17
thefoodiedentist Apr 14, 2026 +28
Allow? They cant stop anything. Dont even have rights or ability to block ships. They are not even close to ship routes cuz they need to stay out of iranian attack range.
28
botle Apr 14, 2026 +29
They don't have any rights to sink small boats in the Caribbean either. These ships are just larger targets. Oh, and owned by richer countries.
29
imtourist Apr 14, 2026 +2
Yeah the US has killed far,far more people on the high-seas this year than the Iranians have. This whacked another boat a few days ago without any sort of due process, or even identification.
2
botle Apr 14, 2026 +7
This is why hitting those small boats was a much bigger issue than people realized. I mean of course in addition to killing the civilians on them without us even being sure who they were, which is bad enough. It gets people used to breaking international law, and increases the tolerance for even bigger crimes in the future. By any actor, not just by the US.
7
Scriefers Apr 14, 2026 +37
Don't have to stop them within range of Iran when they leave port... Every ship everywhere is very well tracked.
37
A_Nonny_Muse Apr 14, 2026 +8
We're gonna blockade the straight of Hormuz... via piracy across the entire planet.

5
Old_Wallaby_7461 Apr 14, 2026 +41
>They cant stop anything A modern tanker has a crew of <20. All you need to stop it without sinking it is to fly a helicopter with a squad of Marines out to it and take the ship's officers into custody. Or have you missed the Russian ghost fleet ships that were seized in the last few months?
41
FairDinkumMate Apr 14, 2026 +5
That's an act of war against whichever nation's flag the ship is sailing.
5
Faiakishi Apr 14, 2026 +15
So is half of everything we do.
15
the-rood-inverse Apr 14, 2026 +18
But that’s piracy
18
the4thwave Apr 14, 2026 +68
You do realize the US just invaded a sovereign nation for no reason whatsoever
68
A_Nonny_Muse Apr 14, 2026 +34
Two sovereign nations, actually.
34
Thesmokingcode Apr 14, 2026 +25
This is going to be pedantic so I'm sorry for that but its not. Piracy is the act of a "private individual" robbing, attacking or detaining a ship. It cannot be piracy if its a military operation sanctioned by a nation.
25
the-rood-inverse Apr 14, 2026 +8
Actually as has been pointed out we have to start to delve into the murky waters of privateering and corsairs which are state sanctioned. But by that point we have lost so much of the moral high ground it’s not worth continuing.
8
Thesmokingcode Apr 14, 2026 +20
Wasn't trying to argue a moral high ground, just the actual meaning of piracy.
20
Ok_Tutor_5544 Apr 14, 2026 +3
So the US starts seizing citizens and ships of other countries? Where do we keep them? What process do we have for returning them? Do we force nations to pay us for their release? Iran has leverage over stopping ships because they literally hit any tanker with drones that tries to pass. They could care less because Trump forced them into a corner and they believe this war is threatens their existence. Going down to their level will destroy whatever political influence the US has left while not making any difference in the overall war. The Republicans have already thrown the midterms, at this rate, they will throw the general election as economic impacts will go well into 2027, probably 2028. And look at Cuba. Apparently we have a blockage on them, yet Russian tankers are dropping off oil. The US isn't going to start conflicts with China and India. Maybe we will stop the tankers of some third world nation that is easily intimidated.
3
couldhaveebeen Apr 14, 2026 +13
>So the US starts seizing citizens and ships of other countries? What do you mean starts? They've been doing it already. Even off top dome, I remember like a year or two ago the US just casually took over an Iranian tanker and just took all of the oil.
13
Old_Wallaby_7461 Apr 14, 2026 +4
>So the US starts seizing citizens and ships of other countries? Where do we keep them? What process do we have for returning them? Exactly the same process that the US (and all of European NATO, increasingly) uses with the Russian ghost fleet. >Apparently we have a blockage on them, yet Russian tankers are dropping off oil. We do not, there are no ships enforcing a blockade.
4
Ok_Tutor_5544 Apr 14, 2026 +7
The same ghost fleet that flies the gabon flag or whatever, running oil for a sanctioned country? Neither India or China are sanctioned, stopping their vessels would cause political incidents, no other countries are coming to assist.
7
torlesse Apr 14, 2026 +2
There is a very big difference between Russian and Chinese ships though. Russia has little to no cards to play in the international area, while China got plenty.
2
andynormancx Apr 14, 2026 +3
That was true for the last few weeks. But they now have at least two destroyers in the area, as they popped into the gulf a couple of days ago, turned on their AIS so everyone could see they were there and then popped out again. In the announcement of the blockade from the US military (not the rambling nonsense from Trump) they made it clear that the enforcement of the blockade would be happening well away from the straits and therefore out of Irans easy access. So if this tanker went through the straits recently it isn’t yet in the area where the US assets will be waiting to do the enforcement.
3
rhino369 Apr 14, 2026 +7
Of course the US has the ability to block ships. F-35s are patrolling the strait at all times.
7
jayrocksd Apr 14, 2026 +8
The US isn't attacking commercial shipping with F-35s. They would just fast rope a couple dozen marines onto it and attempt to persuade them to change course.
8
Jonsnoosnooze Apr 14, 2026 +1795
Hmm so either reuters is pushing unconfirmed info or the White House is lying about the blockade. Hmm I can't decide which is more trustworthy.
1795
MacSage Apr 14, 2026 +614
Not to back the Trump admin, but they did change it to be a blockade of Iranian ports and ships passing through Iranian waters. His first Truth said full blockade, but then his handlers apparently gave him his binky and re-truthed saying just Iranian ports and waters.

And that fact is so so so so so pre-school applesauce obvious to people like you and I, but his MAGA dipshits are *so stupid* that they are completely unaware and gobble that shit up at their trough. Why we are subject to the collective will of the world’s dumbest population is truly criminal.

I refuse to call them that and just call both sites (x and truth social, they're basically the same anyway) Twitter & call all the posts "tweets". I will not ever accuse Trump of being remotely truthful, no matter how hard he tries to frame it that way.
8
SubBirbian Apr 14, 2026 +8

This is what I understand too. The US have declared vessels going to and from an Iranian port will be stopped. China - who gets oil from Iran have said yeah nah. This has a lot of potential to go bad very fast. I’m hoping that whoever has navel command knows what they are doing. On both sides. Because this US administration sure as hell doesn’t.
67
rooftopgoblin Apr 14, 2026 +41
Xi and the CCP have made the century of humiliation a big thing in chinese education and propaganda, meaning that they as a country will absolutely not tolerate the US stopping a chinese ship. It would very likely end in a blockade of taiwan or some other action
41
Fallouttgrrl Apr 14, 2026 +24
I really wouldn't want to be the US Navy captain who has to trigger WW3
24
Zran Apr 14, 2026 +6
Do we know how much naval asset China has in the region or on route? This could still turn bad to worse any moment if China chooses.
6
rooftopgoblin Apr 14, 2026 +15
China has 4 destroyers fairly nearby in the waters off somalia
15
sirseatbelt Apr 14, 2026 +56

3
Duchess430 Apr 14, 2026 +3
They'll do the same thing as before and keep going on course and tell the US get fucked. You really think the US at this point is going to try to mess with the Chinese vessel?
3
meyerpw Apr 14, 2026 +15
I think the merchant sailor and ship owners are going to have the vessel turn around until it is escorted by a Chinese warship.

Trump announced/commenced blockade, Chinese defense ministry stated: ‘Chinese ships continue to move in and out of the waters of the Strait of Hormuz. We have trade and energy agreements with Iran, which we will respect and abide by. We expect others not to interfere in our affairs. Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz, and has opened it to us.’ @Middle_East_spectator This happens. Bluff called.

The blockade is supposedly against ships that paid Iran’s toll. The ships they let through likely had not paid it.
3
tr_thrwy_588 Apr 14, 2026 +19
very convenient, as there is absolutely no evidence that can be provided to public whether someone "paid the toll" or not
19

3
robothawk Apr 14, 2026 +227
Its a ship coming from the UAE and one headed to Iraq, both of which are allowed under the blockade, only ships headed to/from Iran are blocked
227
CryptoThroway8205 Apr 14, 2026 +8
2 ships that stopped at an Iranian port made it through the blockade >Five other vessels had sailed through the strait since the blockade began at 1400 GMT on Monday. These comprised two other chemical and gas tankers, two dry bulk vessels and the Ocean Energy cargo ship that docked at Iran's Bandar Abbas port. https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/us-sanctioned-chinese-tanker-passes-strait-hormuz-despite-us-blockade-data-shows-2026-04-14/ Reuters suggests it could be an intermittent blockade.
8
SituationIll5763 Apr 14, 2026 +43
This word in this context is confusing, no matter how you spin it I could mean either. Were these ships allowed and therefore sanctioned, or were they part of an economically sanctioned country? Is it both?
43
robothawk Apr 14, 2026 +37
The ships are from companies that are sactioned by the US, but being sanctioned does not mean being subject to the blockade. Only ships heading to/from Iran are interdicted.
37
coltoncruise81 Apr 14, 2026 +9
What does sanctioned mean then, if it doesn't mean not allowed to travel?
9
Paraparo Apr 14, 2026 +11
Typically, sanctions are a ban on your own citizens from trading with the sanctioned entity, in the more general sense. So if that tanker was sanctioned by the US, you couldn't buy oil off them. But that doesn't mean the default response is to take any active actions against them in open waters. While it has happened before, it's more of the exception.
11
hi_imjoey Apr 14, 2026 +41
I understand what the article is saying based on context, but it still makes me chuckle when I read an article whose entire meaning is based around a contronym. “Like, yeah, obviously the ships whose passage is sanctioned by the US won’t be affected by a US blockade” /s

6
kiwi_commander Apr 14, 2026 +16
Anyone thinking that the US blockade will actually have the US Navy fire on ships is sorely mistaken. Trump has put the US on such a bad position all the Navy can do is write the ship name and number, to ensure they send them a sternly worded email.
16
princemousey1 Apr 14, 2026 +21
“As the three vessels transiting the strait were not heading to Iranian ports, they are not covered by the blockade.” How do you say clickbait without saying clickbait?
21
GeshtiannaSG Apr 14, 2026 +5
The vessel may not be blockaded, but it is sanctioned.
5
MaxRD Apr 14, 2026 +6
It’s TACO Tuesday again!
6
play_images Apr 14, 2026 +9
Regardless of what the truth is, that it's technically not a full blockade, doesn't matter. He announced this as a full blockade and it was mass reported as a full blockade. So going back to add clarifying questions means d*** as most people who saw him say it was a full blockade are not going to see the actual details for it from us cronies. So now ANY reporting of ships going through will be viewed as yet another failure of the US to the average person. Optics are terrible, terrible idea to begin with, then to report ships going through, oof.
9
AsherGC Apr 14, 2026 +5
So, they just have to stop for coffee at the uae port to bypass the blockade?
5
origanalsameasiwas Apr 14, 2026 +7
It was to to make sure he made more money in stocks and futures in oil markets. Now that they are increasing stopping any buying of the futures market when he says anything. He knows that.

The US is a joke. Trump is an embarrassment
9
Bocote Apr 14, 2026 +7
I can't even keep track of what is going on anymore. I thought the ships had to pay Iran to get safe passage through the strait, but if they pay the ransom, I thought the US was going to block them. But, these ships got through? Which side is not carrying out their threat?
7
Hollie_Maea Apr 14, 2026 +3
I can’t read the article because of the stupid paywall but if they are talking about Rich Starry, it actually was blockaded just a little later.
3
jomasthrones Apr 14, 2026 +5
Basically the entire Iran situation is the equivalent to letting 5th graders control US foreign policy. Trump, Hegseth and Co. have no f****** clue what they are doing.
5

Jesus Trump is too busy healing people on AI memes, attending UFC events, and insulting the pope

Seems like the pro-Trump bots have been spinning up since popular support is collapsing. Anyone trying to explain away the "wording" of his "truths" are missing the point. This makes the US look really weak lol.

What does a blockade even imply in this situation? They have no legal authority in the area. What are they going to do to ships that try to go through?

Can anyone with some maritime knowledge help me understand this, because it looks like there's essentially no blockade considering the number of ships transiting: https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/shipid:9747569/zoom:8

This makes the Americans a complete laughingstock. Trump likes to call NATO a paper tiger, yet he himself is Xi and Vladimir's lapdog.

His market manipulation is so blatant, it’s almost funny. I mean even as a lay person you can just follow along. Buy some stocks or ETF on Monday after he had a Friday rant, wait for taco Tuesday, sell. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It left a port in the UAE! The blockade is meant to only stop ships going to or coming from Iranian ports... If you want America to attack every sanctioned vessels out there, tell those sanctioned vessels to sail in the Caribbean, geez... Seriously though, making f****** mountains outta ant hills with all this information, those lazy journalists.. These ships are not what the blockade is for, and while now is probably a good chance to catch them as they squeeze on by the blockade, they're not stateless/illicitly registered vessels like those boarded by America in the Caribbean prior. That would be internationally illegal and a big no-no pissing off major contenders. Nah nah, see here... This blockade against Iranian shipping is perfectly legal, see, 'cuz its in the name of War... See?...

I think he said they're only blocking Iranian ships. There are no Iranian ships. There are ships going to Iranian ports- but they could be any country - including China.

Would the us navy seize a Chinese ship with Iranian oil? That would drag China into war.

TheDevilsAdvokaat Apr 14, 2026 +1
So what will the US do now? Start attacking ships they have not sanctioned?
