Can't decide whether they're using Vance as the sacrificial lamb on talks that will go nowhere, or whether the deal is already there in principle and they use this to elevate his profile ahead of 2028.

I don’t think Trump elevates anyone but himself

I'd be surprised if Trump could tell you what day of the week it is most of the time. He's not the one orchestrating these plans.

Rumor has it that Vance was actually against the Iran war. (Him being very quiet about it these last couple of weeks would support it.) Rumor also has it Netanyahu convinced Trump to attack Iran. If those rumors are true it would invalidate your claim.

shortsteve 2 days ago +12
Vance has presidential aspirations. He knows how unpopular Trump has become so he needs to find ways to distance himself from Trump while maintaining a public persona as if he still supports him. Even the right wing blogosphere doesn't really believe it.

Vance has as much chance of winning the next election as I do. He sealed his fate in 2024.
6
Salty_Pop_3888 2 days ago
Then again, Trump did win in 2024 despite everything he had done before that. If Americans can vote for Trump in 2024, I don't see why they cannot for Vance in 2028.

If he wanted to any chance of winning presidency , imho he should’ve revolted against this war. Not keep quiet. His chances of presidency is fucked.

>Rumor also has it Netanyahu convinced Trump to attack Iran. Iran has for sure been heavily agitpropping that point recently. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G9DNx7xIIc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5G9DNx7xIIc)

You mean to imply the rumor was because of Iran's videos? It could be the other way around just as well.
3
Donnicton 2 days ago +4
No, the rumors have existed for a long time. I'm saying Iran has been capitalizing on Trump's tanking popularity to drill the image of Trump being a dog for Bibi even harder because even among his own base Israel is a party-splitting sticking point.

Plans is a strong word for what has been happening. Impulse driven mass murder is better. Trump never had a plan.
4
DexJedi 2 days ago +3
In that sense I would agree. There was no good plan. But I would not d******* his *involvement*, let's call it that.

Just read the NY Times article about inside scoop how this all came about it's probably the best article of the year so far. Iran said that they specifically wanted Vance because he's a non-interventionist.

They know that Kushner and Witkoff want war so they’re probably happy to have anyone other than them
14
keithabarta 2 days ago +14
Iran also knows those two are tweedle dee and tweedle dumb. Even Israeli sources said that Iran offered a good deal before the war and Kushner and Witkoff couldn’t comprehend what was being offered, so they rejected it.
14

Not saying you are wrong, but do you have a source for that?

They hope vance could cushion the impact a bit
1
Khshayarshah 2 days ago +1
Witkoff is called "Ayatollah Witkoff" by Iranian dissidents for his efforts to try to appease this regime and every jihadist he sits down with. The fact that the regime couldn't make any progress with a pushover like Witkoff further reveals how delusional they are.

Vance is who’s going to be around Washington the next few decades, with a political aspiration to be president, and so they have the greatest leverage over him. He knows this will play into his 2028 run - if he agrees something here and wins 28 he has to deal with whatever he agrees to. The rest are more reckless because they either don’t have the same political ambitions or will hide it until last minute, so not to be viewed in that lens Edit - I’m speaking in relation to Iran not Trump admin
3
HFB_To_You 2 days ago +2
Yes - Vance is clearly servile, and owned by tech money in addition to whatever foreign influence is at play, hence it would seem more reasonable that they keep him around. On the other hand, he is a bumpkin utterly void of charisma and achievement; can they really build new-MAGA on his foundations? V much doubt it.

allbutluk 2 days ago +3
No they are setting Vance up to take over Midterm is fucked and Vance stayed as far away from iran as possible until now If he coordinates with Iran well, he can come home as the “hero” who opened the strait and then im sure Trump will have a medical reason to step down before midterm and republicans will magically forget what this administration did for last 2 yrs
3

Definitely possible.

I think Trump thinks he’s sending Vance to fail and Vance is going to throw Article 25 on the table and secure the deal with U.S. regime change.

Article 25 is harder than impeachment. You need 2/3rds of both houses of congress plus half the cabinet—whom Trump can fire at will.  It’ll never happen.

That's how the last round was like too, when Oman was mediating. And reportedly they were close to an agreement, until the Americans "flipped the table over" and launched an attack on feb 28

This is Trump killing off Vance. These talks are doomed from the get go. When they fail and the Iranians still control the Strait, he'll blame Vance... and toss him like a old cheeseburger wrapper.

That would actually be great, I think Vance is smarter and maybe more evil than Trump

Even if he is more evil, I’ll take lawful evil over batshit chaotic evil. As a country we’re pretty accustomed to lawful evil.

In his intentions, not his past actions That's also why I put a "maybe" there. I don't know and I don't think it's very likely, but maybe

Vance isn’t a pedophile as far as I know so I’d say he’s not as evil as Trump. I think he’s probably more “traditional republican” evil than batshit cartoon villain.

Because iran state media loves to lie. Shocking i know, but it's part of their propaganda machine. (The following is a comment i posted a day ago, which still holds true:) As an Iranian, the moment trump talked about peace deals two weeks ago, i knew it was ghalibaf (head of parliament and these negotiations) who was making contact with the USA. but he denied it multiple times at that moment. State media denied it too. Now we have confirmation that he is indeed in talks, but since they want to save a face in front of their supporters (hardliners that they riled up with "no negotiations with USA" chants), they throw a tantrum saying if Lebanon isn't part of the deal they won't attend. But they will, That's how mullahs Operate. They just lie to people all the time. This isn't something new for Iranians.

Can you share your insight on the outcome of the negotiations? Do you think they will agree to give up the enriched uranium? Do you think the US will bomb power plants and bridges?
2
FewResearcher2606 2 days ago +4
They want to, but they have backed themselves into a corner. Regime gets most of its power from the hardliners. The over religious families who consider supporting the regime their "holy duty". Now, to rile them up and to make them defend against protesters (regime supporters have been in the streets for 40 days non stop in every city every night here) and to save a face, they talked a lot about how enrichment is their right, how Negotiations is sign of weakness and most importantly, and I'm not making this up, "victory is destined to them by their religion." So admitting a tie or a defeat is impossible. This also applies to supporting proxies and fighting isreal. Here is the problem now, a rational mind would say "good, i can get a good deal by giving away enrichment that my country doesn't even need at all". But that would mean actually admitting they are backing away from what i said above and not honoring the words of dead ayatollah. They already created a large dissatisfaction among their followers and by agreeing to these talks in the first place, now imagine how their supporters would react if they make a deal with the " great satan" and "killer of Khamenei". But at the same time, Ghalibaf is eying the presidency for next term (he didn't get more than a few million votes last time) so he needs this talks to be successful. Same as the new Ayatollah he wants to live unlike his father. Now, considering what i said above, here is what i think will happen if negotiations go through: They will not agree to no enrichment, unless USA gives them both sanction lift and control of hormoz. Or they will agree to low level enrichment, without control of the hormoz but still demand lift of the sanctions. Talks will fail if Israel pushes for iran to acknowledge them as a country. Iran will not agree with that ever. For the hardliner and religious and reasons i mentioned. Same as supporting proxies, those will not happen. Iran burned the bridges of being a normal country long ago. But Ultimately, i think talks will be successful, but don't expect iran to agree to all of the 15 points that Trump demands. They won't agree to all of the terms it even if you fill their pockets with billions every minute. JD Vance needs this W for 2028 too, so he should control trump mood swings and lower his expectations if he wants the deal, otherwise i will get to play Fallout 5 Irl. TLDR: talks will be successful, just don't expect this deal to cover every thing trump demands. Iran acts like they don't want for the sake of its own supporters, but they want it bad.

Can we be real this meeting is going to go nowhere. All this hopium was to prop up Friday's stock markets, considering POTUS shilled for a stock today. The strait will stay closed with tolls and fighting in Lebanon will continue. As for US Iran it's over as troops leave in 2 weeks.
