Iconic Radiohead placement

just wish they let the song run for the whole scene. not sure why they stopped it before he gets to time square

SpaceBowie2008 Mar 27, 2026 +2
New Radiohead out next month.

Zman734 Mar 26, 2026 +76
This was not done with CGI, they really shut down Times Square for this scene.
76
voxadam Mar 27, 2026 +36
The permits alone cost them a million dollars (almost $2M adjusted for inflation) to close 20 blocks around Times Square for that 30 second scene.

Should have just waited a couple of decades.

prodaljavame Mar 27, 2026 +39
This is why I like watching older movies. Shit's real.

HankSteakfist Mar 27, 2026 +42
The car however, is not real. It's actually a Nissan 280Z that is mocked up to look like a Ferrari 250 GTO.
42
GeorgeLovesBOSCO Mar 27, 2026 +23
My whole life is a lie.
23
voxadam Mar 27, 2026 +10
The 280Z is *far* more reliable.
10
senorpoop Mar 27, 2026 +3
And a lot less expensive. A real 250 GTO is worth somewhere between $50 and $70 million. The entire production budget for Vanilla Sky was $68 million.
3
MrT735 Mar 27, 2026 +2
The value was quite a bit less back then, I can't find a 2001 sale, but 3 changed hands in 2000 for $6.5m, $7m and $8m. But yes, given the very limited availability of the model a replica was certainly an easier and cheaper option, plus if they absolutely wanted it in black that further limited their options.
2
Guessididntmakeit Mar 27, 2026 +2
Makes sense the car alone would have been another 20 million to insure and to safely get it to the set and back.
2
RGJ587 Mar 27, 2026 +2
the crash that car in the movie. would be an expensive scene if it was real

Cameron Crowe gave an interesting [interview](https://www.vulture.com/2020/05/cameron-crowes-vanilla-sky-easter-eggs.html) where he talked about the film, the meaning(s) of the ending and this scene. So he said he talked with the director of the original film, and thought "As you emptied out the streets in Spain, let’s do ours in New York, and let’s have an empty Times Square. What could be more chilling than that?" After finally getting permission, they only had access to a closed Times Square for three hours on a Sunday morning. So that meant they had to do this very quickly. But the city made it clear this was a one-off, they wouldn't do this ever again for another film. And according to Crowe, Danny DeVito tried to request a similar thing for an upcoming film and obviously it wasn't granted.

I'm amazed that we're able to do it back then even 2 million dollars. All the vendors and owners.I don't even know how they managed to agree to it

Abres Los Ojos! I always felt people were too hard on this remake. It had some cool sequences and did a nice job with its visual cues.
14
TwoLegitShiznit Mar 27, 2026 +2
I've seen both, vanilla sky is better. Because the original is a foreign film and this one has cruise, people are just automatically going to be biased against it. Maybe if the original had the same size budget it would have sold the vastness of the plot better.

Look up a basic summary of the episode “Shadow Play” It’s on display in the background here just before David starts sprinting.

Great episode, I love the original Twilight Zone series.

One of my favorite scenes in any movie. This remake gets a lot of hate on Listnook IIRC but I'm not sure why. I've always loved it, and this scene sucked me in on my first watch and I was hooked.

Later in the film you can make out the windshield sticker on his car- 2/30/01
3
corradoZuse Mar 27, 2026 +3
This movie is based of a Spanish one called "Abre los ojos". I really recommend it has a fantastic oldish vibe. Plus is Spanish peak cinema.

I still remember how eerie this sequence felt at the time, seeing all the empty streets right after 9/11.
1
thatsshowbizbabe Mar 27, 2026 +1
During Covid I went to Times Square and this is exactly why it looked like
1
Fabulous-Car-6850 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Yup same. Only a few shocked people looking around at an empty Manhattan.
1
thatsshowbizbabe Mar 27, 2026 +1
It was wild wasn’t it? We rented a rebel scooter when those were still a thing and rode around the entire city with no traffic. Pretty surreal experience

I loved that scene until i learned the gorgeous Ferrari was a replica. Sigh! They could afford to shut down town square for three hours and they couldn’t afford a real 250 GTO?!
-1
piray003 Mar 27, 2026 +12
Considering they sell at auction for $40m-70m, which was about the budget for this movie, no they prob couldn’t lol.
12
Valuable_Ad_4916 Mar 27, 2026 -11
Well, they could have rented one. Not necessarily have to buy it.
-11
stalltilyouhaul Mar 27, 2026 +9
The show “Top Gear” couldn’t even afford to drive a real one on the show for a few minutes because their insurance wouldn’t permit it. They were produced by the BBC, by the way. This short video is a super interesting look at the car. They were all handmade, even down to the body panels. https://youtu.be/_iAwdZkHYCI?si=vPVCuFc0XFCjyfLg

dreamerkid001 Mar 27, 2026 +9
I’ll almost guarantee it would be uninsurable.
9
tatofarms Mar 27, 2026 +3
Don't less than 40 of those exist?
3
ineyeseekay Mar 27, 2026 +2
Why use a real one for a movie when it doesn't make much difference? They weren't $40 mil when this movie was made, but it was still multimillions and simply isn't worth the liability.
2
Epyon214 Mar 27, 2026 -6
Open your eyes, said repeatedly in an opening scene, with Tom Cruise as the main actor who was also the main actor in Eyes Wide Shut, the movies only two years apart, in New York as the setting for the location in each No meaning there, surely
-6
LabourArdourLanguor Mar 27, 2026 +12
It has nothing to do with Eyes Wide Shut. Abre Los Ojos, or “open your eyes”, is the title of the 1997 Spanish film that Vanilla Sky is an adaptation of. This scene is a recreation of the opening scene of the original, and the line is voiced by Penelope Cruz who plays the same role in both films.
12
Miserable_Moment_ Mar 27, 2026 +1
Open your eyes is the original movies name
1
jakreth Mar 27, 2026 -7
This was absolute shit compared to the original scene from Alejandro Amenabar's "Abre los ojos" https://youtu.be/csJRiLAlbso?is=AlO1771AnbHG610X
-7
GentlemanOctopus Mar 27, 2026 +3
Why does everything have to be "absolute shit" if it's not your preferred of the two? There's nothing wrong with the remake scene, even if you prefer the original.
3
jakreth Mar 27, 2026
It's my opinion,I don't like it at all, the videoclip style it's really incoherent with what the scene should transmit.
0
Miserable_Moment_ Mar 27, 2026 +2
This looks like a 200$ commercial wtf are you taking about lol.
2
elementus Mar 27, 2026
This does not look like "a $200 commercial", and the Vanilla Sky version does not look like "absolute shit". Y'all really need to figure out there's nuance and middle ground in the world lol
0
alexs Mar 27, 2026 +1
Tom Cruise does bring a certain weird vibe to everything he does but the remake is actually a good film and hating on it is just pretentious.

roastbeeftacohat Mar 27, 2026 -1
this movie got me into lucid dreaming. yes it was for sex dreams. and I only managed to not wake myself up a year ago.

Some cheesy dialog and Jason Lee bothers the shit out of me in it, but still … brilliant movie
-1

Are you to blame for his career going dark?
2
Pure_Choice_8459 Mar 27, 2026 -1
No I think that was his acting ability and general annoyingness as a person. Also a Scientologist I believe.

Sorry, sounded like her. I realize now it’s Penelope Cruz.
1
aHistoryofSmilence Mar 27, 2026 +3
Lol yeah. Ana de armas would have been a child in 2001. The voice at the end of the clip is Cameron Diaz btw.

She was, like, 12 when this came out. That’s Penelope Cruz and then Cameron Diaz the second time.

Yeah I realized it later. Sure sounds like her though.
