I f****** love Whataburger. Had one right by our high school.

It's bad now sadly

Say what you will about the south. Whataburger smacks
-9
metalguy91 Mar 29, 2026 +35
Whataburger USED to smack, BDT Capital Partners bought them out in 2019 and they’ve been pretty shit since. Not a Texas staple anymore, just another corporate chain with subpar overpriced food. Anyone who says Whataburger is still the best fast food burger are just overly Texas loyal or haven’t tried anywhere else. Source: Texan.

Pandaro81 Mar 29, 2026 +9
There was a time in the early ‘00s in the South when Jack N the Box was like that. It was after the bochulism scandal and they were still looking to expand. They had the biggest most insane burgers for a handful of years, got established, then scaled everything back to trash quality. They were dope for those first few years though.
9
metalguy91 Mar 29, 2026 +7
Damn yeah early 00’s Jack In The Box was great, that’s around when there was a bunch of the car antenna toppers of Jack. How the mighty have fallen.

I can still taste the Colossus.

As a Texan I can confirm this man’s personal account! F*** all private equity firms!!

mewithoutCthulhu Mar 29, 2026 +5
You’re probably right, but I still love it. I’m from way up north. I have family in deep South Texas. I don’t think I ever had Whataburger until one of my trips down there around 2010. Loved it though. Maybe it’s because I only get to have it once a year that I didn’t notice the changes, but it’s still great to me. We usually roll into town pretty late when we make the near 30 hour trip down there, but our first meal is always Whataburger. Usually get it at least one more time for a meal. Also get it when we go to South Padre Island. And then we hit it one last time when we travel back north, usually in Gainesville.
5
metalguy91 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I mean that’s super fair. Having it spaced out along with having a very nostalgic memory attached to it, that can go beyond actual ingredient changes. I speak as someone who had it like 2-4 times a month for a bit with no nostalgia or anything attached. All that to say, if you enjoy it, keep enjoying it! Nothing some random listnookors can say can change what’s in your heart. Try the patty melt if you haven’t already.
1
amendmentforone Mar 30, 2026 +3
Ugh, when I moved to Houston back in 2013 Whataburger just was amazing. When I left Texas in 2024 it was just overpriced, c**** burgers with insane wait times for fast food (I think I waited like 30 minutes one time for just one of their basic burgers with jalapenos). Goddamn private equity really does ruin everything.
3
Tremulant887 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Also Texan. Every whataburger I've been to taste the same.
2
smurfem Mar 30, 2026 +2
I miss the chophouse cheddar burger :(
2
ThrowingChicken Mar 30, 2026 +1
They say the Steakhouse is supposed to come back soon. It’s basically the chophouse but with a slightly different sauce.
1
smurfem Mar 30, 2026 +1
I know, it’s not the same though, but I appreciate the heads up. They also could bring back the root beer milkshake lol.
1
dmac07 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Yeah, they're just a rebranded Sonic now
2
ThrowingChicken Mar 30, 2026 +1
I’ve been to shit locations before the buyout and I’ve been to great ones after. They should work towards getting their individual kitchens in order, but the idea that corporate is saddling the franchisees with sub-par ingredients is just perception instead of reality.
1
JonFrznWatrVapr Mar 30, 2026 +1
Facts heard great things went to texas for business in 2022. Shit is almost as bad as modern Burger King.
1
Nice_Marmot_7 Mar 30, 2026 +3
Only place in my town that was open 24 hours. Many 3am potato taquitos were had.
3
Needmyvape Mar 29, 2026 +2
Whataburger is burgerking with bigger hamburgers
2
DicloasCage Mar 29, 2026 -2
How dare you sir
-2
bigbeefer92 Mar 30, 2026 -1
Our impression of it when we finally got one in Tennessee was that it was a shittier, more expensive Sonic with less options and no cherry limeade.
-1
blindreefer Mar 30, 2026 +1
I always tasted metal when I ate at sonic. Say what you will about any other brand but that’s worrying
1
OrganizationUsed7454 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Nah it's better than Sonic. Sonic is bottom of the barrel fast food
1
Coletrain44 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Born and raised in Texas. Whataburger sucks. Only time it’s good is at 2am after the bar closes. The only good things are the Taquitos and B.O.B.’s.
2
pomonalost Mar 29, 2026 +2
When I had one, it was bland, thin patty and with pale tomatoes. Worse than Burger King.
2
Medieval_Mind Mar 30, 2026 +1
It does not smack. It takes an hour+ to get your food and it’s mid. Doctor Pepper shake is amazing though.
1
Thebaldsasquatch Mar 29, 2026 +265
Actually a pretty good movie. Does a decent job showing the good and bad of both sides, characters are multifaceted and the end is really satisfying.
265
Platanoes Mar 30, 2026 +56
Exactly. This rant does not capture the tone of the movie at all and he actually turns around in the end and learns to actually understand them
56
ImminentReddits Mar 30, 2026 +24
Yeah, it also misses the crucial detail that the movie shows in the beginning that BJ Novak’s character actually lives a really empty life in NYC. So when he’s saying that where he’s from is “Fun and interesting” he’s a. lying to himself and b. coping that he hasn’t been able to find the meaning he’s craved here either. Kind of his “wherever you go, there you are” moment
24
sielingfan Mar 30, 2026 +33
Out of context and on Listnook, this looks like the cathartic "finally tell em how it is, king" scene. Actually it's more like the All is Lost moment, and BJ has to start addressing some character flaws to move past it. The movie is *not* about microchips in vaccines -- BJ's character is crashing out because he's kind of an a****** and finally has an excuse to bail on a grieving family who welcomed him and tried to love him.
33
GnosticDoomsayer Mar 30, 2026
Accepting them was a mistake. He cooked in this scene, he should press charges for the guy assaulting him, he was right that people who believe that shit are f****** stupid, and no amount of coddling or acceptance is gonna make their warped view of the world anything short of **sabotage** the second they enter a voting booth. Willful ignorance should never be accepted.
0
Prof_Gankenstein Mar 30, 2026 +6
Well bless your heart.
6
sielingfan Mar 30, 2026 +1
No notes
1
empyreantyrant Mar 30, 2026 +1
Uhm, okay? Spoiler alert, it turns out BJ Novak's character was wrong, and Boyd Holbrook's instincts were right. It was a pretty good movie, you should check it out.
1
Joeybfast Mar 30, 2026 +1
100% with you.
1
cmarkcity Mar 30, 2026 +22
The rant doesn’t capture the tone of the rest of the movie, it’s the schism in the story. But it does contain my favorite line for the whole movie “your hearts can go bless themselves”. It really does a surprisingly good job at encompassing Texas culture
22
SmallRocks Mar 29, 2026 +28
***100 percent***
28
OKC89ers Mar 30, 2026 +2
Looks like a ton of rants, hopefully this wasn't representative of most of the movie
2
digsy Mar 30, 2026 +7
Narr it's not. It's fish out of water stuff. Starts a bit weak but is genuinely worth sticking around for.
7
Thebaldsasquatch Mar 30, 2026 +1
Ashton Kutcher’s best work. And he’s in it the perfect amount for an Ashton Kutcher role.
1
Zomburai Mar 30, 2026 +3
Oldboy looks like a ton of fight scenes of you just see a clip of the fight scene
3
Objective-Mission-40 Mar 30, 2026 +1
I want to watch it. It also made bj look like everything he said was right when looking at just this. The Texan resulted to violence (his heart) when words failed him.
1
oversoul00 Mar 29, 2026 +126
BJ definitely uses Listnook.

This movie was surprisingly poignant and hilarious. Well executed. Worth a watch

ThreeLeggedMare Mar 29, 2026 +117
This was actually a pretty good movie
117
netralitov Mar 29, 2026 +41
I loved this movie way more than I thought I would. The ending was so shocking I actually shouted IRL.
41
ThreeLeggedMare Mar 29, 2026 +14
And the blond dude (forget name sorry) is really great
14
Capnleonidas Mar 29, 2026 +19
Boyd Holbrook. He is great in Justified: City Primeval. You might want to check it out.
19
sielingfan Mar 29, 2026 +14
Many will also know him as the antagonist heavy in Logan.
14
Capnleonidas Mar 30, 2026 +1
I’ve had the black & white version of Logan on my to-watch list for quite some time now, thanks for reminding me.
1
diiscotheque Mar 30, 2026 +1
isn't he the Meridian in Dream or something like that
1
SirChairmaster Mar 30, 2026 +7
Yes, he was great as the Corinthian in Sandman
7
CyJackX Mar 30, 2026 +6
I always know him as first season Narcos
6
mvandemar Mar 30, 2026 +3
He was also great as The Corinthian in The Sandman.

Naw, teethy eyeballs was too much for me.
1
ThreeLeggedMare Mar 30, 2026 +2
Yes! Ty, familiar with him there as well. Just oozes charisma
2
emogu84 Mar 29, 2026 +4
I really enjoyed the movie until the wtf ending. Felt like it wasn’t earned or properly setup and felt like the end to a very different movie from the one I’d just watched.
4
netralitov Mar 30, 2026 +1
That's what I loved about it. It completely blew me away. I was watching one movie, then went "HOLY SHIT" and was left jaw dropped.

The End
1
sielingfan Mar 29, 2026 +18
100% I'm a New York to West Texas transplant (well, East New Mexico, which is essentially west west texas). The movie captured a lot of the feel, although it's more or less comedic caricature on both ends at times. Felt like BJ really did try to see the heart out here, and mostly succeeded. Definitely has more of a NY perspective.
18
LysergicMerlin Mar 29, 2026 +2
Im feeling some of this as a clevelander living in kentucky tbh
2
Meliodas016 Mar 29, 2026 +5
I liked it a lot, but the killer was somehow very obvious to me. Maybe the way the character was written.
5
ThreeLeggedMare Mar 29, 2026 +7
Sure, but the mystery isn't really the thrust of the narrative
7
Meliodas016 Mar 30, 2026 +1
That's fair.
1
cire1184 Mar 30, 2026 +2
It was the micro aggression girl wasn't it!?
2
turb0_encapsulator Mar 29, 2026 +30
I can really only see him as Ryan.
30
zephyrtr Mar 29, 2026 +7
Ryan, do you really not know how Netflix works?
7
PeneItaliano Mar 29, 2026 -4
The Ryan character was so ridiculous to me
-4
Western-Umpire6031 Mar 30, 2026 +3
Yea…. That’s like the complete and entire, objective point, of his character… 🤔 Ughhhhh…. Grass is green as well 👌
3
cire1184 Mar 30, 2026 +1
But he got an MBA!
1
Mattbl Mar 30, 2026 +1
Well at first he was the viewer's surrogate, but he evolved into a characterization of himself. As did every character on The Office.
1
Joosh93 Mar 29, 2026 +10
Ryan vs Steve Murphy

mountsleepyhead Mar 29, 2026 +16
Talk about a pretty good movie I totally forgot about.

Seems like a douchebag pretending to be a nice guy.
33
Acrobatic-Addendum97 Mar 29, 2026 +21
Which one? /s
21
CaptainDouchington Mar 29, 2026 +4
Exactly
4
BeauShowTV Mar 29, 2026 +70
Sounds like it was written by a New Yorker that has never been to Texas.
70
haberdasher42 Mar 29, 2026 +90
No. It sounds like it was written by someone that's never been in NY or Texas. Because like most of Hollywood it was written by someone that's spent most of their time in LA.
90
hikemalls Mar 29, 2026 +45
Yeah the whole movie felt like "guy in an LA bubble trying to preach to New Yorkers and Texans about their respective bubbles"; I wanted to like it but it mostly fell flat for me.
45
Shawn_NYC Mar 30, 2026 +15
I've lived in both states. Neither of these people sound like people from NY or TX. And let's not pretend "city slicker who's all brain learns something from small town people with heart" is deep because it's the plot of every Hallmark love movie.
15
danimagoo Mar 30, 2026 +4
Hallmark has actually largely abandoned that trope the last few years, believe it or not.
4
OsoBrazos Mar 30, 2026 +1
Last year's Bazooka Loves Holiday was a really great love story between a girl who just wants to escape the zombies and a girl who wants to blow them all up.
1
Kaiisim Mar 30, 2026 +1
Because it makes no sense and most small towns are bastions of authoritarianism.
1
knallpilzv2 Mar 30, 2026 +1
OK, that's good to know. Because that's exactly what this clip makes it look like and I was wondering if it just did because it was out of context. :D
1
Nice_Marmot_7 Mar 30, 2026 +4
It was written and directed by BJ Novak so Boston>LA.
4
Castlenock Mar 29, 2026 +11
This right here - as someone who was raised in the north east but whose family came from the deep south and spent most of their time between those two poles I can promise you this writer didn't come from Texas, the south east or the north east. It's very difficult for one who has lived in both worlds to weave through such stereotypes and this dialogue is no fine needlework to that task, it's more akin to a bull charging through a china shop. A bit chaffed when I read other comments that sees this segment as good writing. Movie may be good (haven't watched it, doubt I will), but I was cringing throughout this whole scene.
11
knallpilzv2 Mar 30, 2026 +1
I'm from Germany and I'm not surprised to hear you say any of that, having watched that clip. :D
1
darth_hotdog Mar 29, 2026 +15
Yeah, randomly shouting “bless your heart” in response to that? The context feels so forced. It’s a fun movie, but a little silly.
15
Iblueddit Mar 29, 2026 -38
lol you sound like exactly like these southern characters. Someone didn't get you exactly right and follow all your little steps so you just dismiss the perspective.
-38
BeauShowTV Mar 29, 2026 +29
It just sounds like what a Listnookor thinks a Texan is like. The perspective is wrong.
29
Iblueddit Mar 29, 2026 -19
Yeah way to not listen to a word I said lol. You just repeated your original comment. You are LITERALLY acting like the people in this video. That's wild.
-19
sempurus Mar 29, 2026 +11
I'd call this less 'not exactly right' and more just disingenuous, and I'm a northerner. If you want to reach people with your story then you have to make your reference point for any given group of people relatable, or it becomes a fishbowl.
11
Iblueddit Mar 29, 2026 -22
I'm not obligated to 'reach people'. I'm not a government service. If I want to make fun of you and put you down for being more focused on performative manners than actual change, then that's what I'll do.
-22
Long_Ad_881 Mar 30, 2026 +4
No, but you responded to a critique of the movie. No one is obligated to not “dismiss the perspective” if the art speaking that message is clunky and poorly written. Also, a good way to make people dismiss the perspective is by being an a******. Sounds like you didn’t really get the point of the movie either.
4
sempurus Mar 29, 2026 +12
Sure, more power to you, but you've gotta recognize that making fun of someone for being focused on performative manners over actual change when it only serves catharsis to do so works against actual change, in the end, because it furthers alienation. Unless your ideal change is some level of furthered state divide or secession, in which case you're on the right track.
12
Iblueddit Mar 29, 2026 -8
I dont give a f*** dude. Youre not getting it. My fun and where i spend is not predicated on service to you.
-8
sempurus Mar 29, 2026 +13
I get it. Good luck with your 'actual change', man.
13
TheDarkGrayKnight Mar 29, 2026 +8
The perspective that New Yokers think Texans are dumb?
8
TheNicholasRage Mar 29, 2026 +15
No. Listen, I get it. I'm from a state that gets the same treatment, but so many people here are too tightly wound around their cultural pride and too caught up in the admitedly shit writing to take a step back and dig in to what was actually being said here. The movie isn't saying Texans are stupid. I think the character thinks that, but that isn't what the *script* is saying. B.J Novak's character is growing too, it's important to remember that we're seeing a small isolated clip of a larger story. So if the point isn't that Texans are stupid, what is it? It's that Texans are too individualistic to recognize when they should be open to an outside perspective. That's absolutely true, though I want to be clear: I think the writing perscribes an American problem to specifically Texans. I've lived all over this country, it's not a Texas problem, it's a US problem. Americans love the idea of following our hearts, we overvalue the individual. No one is calling anyone stupid, don't mistake a character's opinion for a writer's opinion.
15
Iblueddit Mar 29, 2026 +6
No
6
Nice_Marmot_7 Mar 30, 2026 +1
I mean, I’m from the South and sometimes people ask me why I don’t have an accent. Sometimes they have also told me they assume or used to assume that everyone with a southern accent is dumb.
1
Joeybfast Mar 30, 2026 +1
That dude is 100% right, These are the people who complain about the rich but vote for politicians giving tax breaks to billionaires. They’re the same ones who say things like “look how great life in this country is” while supporting those who let corporations dump toxic waste into our waterways and sell off parts of the forest. They complain about no mental health serveries while vote for people who cut them. They don't care about doing better that care about others doing worse.
1
ContradictoryNature Mar 30, 2026 +1
Genuinely curious if you'd feel the same way if you saw the movie.

I bet you haven’t seen the movie lol
1
Alterris Mar 30, 2026 +1
Yeah this scene out of context isn’t a great representation of the movie. It’s much better than what you’d get from watching just this clip
1
LoocsinatasYT Mar 29, 2026 +4
Holy hell I tried to sit through that so hard.
4
unknownpoltroon Mar 30, 2026 +4
And of course noone f****** listened and the response was a punch
4
EndlessMorfeus Mar 30, 2026 +13
Ok, I haven't watched this whole movie but this is the second comment I see saying that the Texan dude punched him because he couldn't come with a reply. Based on context, it's clear dude was just pissed off about "she was just a girl on my phone" being said about his dead sister(?).
13
unknownpoltroon Mar 30, 2026 +4
Hes not listening either. Hes explaining why he wasn't there for her, that she wasn't his girlfriend, they weren't dating, and gets punched. Granted, tempers were flaring, but still.
4
EndlessMorfeus Mar 30, 2026 +4
He basically said "she was just a chick I used to smash" if he went with "I didn’t even know her that well" he would probably avoid that punch.
4
PeneItaliano Mar 30, 2026 +1
Agreed.

This was a pretty decent movie however i feel like it would've been better with someone else as the lead
1
Kaiisim Mar 30, 2026 +1
Wonder if BJ Novak would make this movie now. Seems like it's a classic pretentious liberal who wants to show he really does understand the red state people and they're not so ba- oops no wait they voted for a pedophile racist twice ~
1

Not a good movie. Felt like a clumsy college project with some names attached.
