Clopen is also when you work the closing shift and then the opening shift the next day.

Fun fact, in mathematics a set can be both open and closed at the same time.

The GOP doesn't like the word "straight" and the Strait is now confusingly "closeted".

Meanwhile markets alredy priced in the end of war. Everything is gucci better than before.

Are they just gullible? Have they just not figured out that Trump is making stuff up and shouldn’t be trusted? Why does *anyone* in the markets even listen to the guy? If I were them I’d be betting on the opposite of everything he says, I’d be a billionaire by the end of the day.

Luke_Bavarious Apr 18, 2026 +10
I'm not even sure it's humans making the decisions, it could all just be bots reacting to news.

All_Fiction Apr 18, 2026 +1
It doesn't matter to them. As long as the line goes up, everything is gucci.

randomcatinfo Apr 18, 2026 +5
The markets seem so detached from reality now. 20 years ago you could get a feeling for where the markets would go depending on international news, now it seems less consistent.

BYoungNY Apr 18, 2026 +2
Probably all based in AI now. AI is really good at taking in a ton of information and making decisions on the fly based off of mathematical probability. What AI is bad at is ever thinking that that data could be falsely manipulated by bad actors.

I live in a town close to where they train ship officers and engineers. When it began, a bunch of students were interning on the ships and they were stuck there. When they came back, they said they found it cool and exhilarating although a bit scary. Says a lot about the kind of person who is interested in such careers!

It doesn't matter if it's open or not at this point, no will provide insurance. The companies have also been spooked by Houthi threats to the Suez canal so they're all on the way around the cape of good hope. Shipping maps show huge groups of tankers and cargo ships at anchor either side of the straight, that alone will take weeks or even months to clear.

sailing_by_the_lee Apr 18, 2026 +4
It isn't confusing at all if you have internalized the fact that Trump lies constantly and reflexively. Trump says what he *wants* to be true, not was is *actually* true. So, it's simple. Never believe anything he says until it has been confirmed by an independent source.

Its not open and confirmed by Iran that its closed just a few hours ago: [https://x.com/mb\_ghalibaf/status/2045264713593114970](https://x.com/mb_ghalibaf/status/2045264713593114970) "The U.S. President made seven claims in one hour, and all seven are false. They did not win the war with these lies, and they certainly will not get anywhere in negotiations either With the continuation of the blockade, the Strait of Hormuz will not remain open"

There's zero confusion lol. Nobody is going to trust IRGC or its many terrorist proxies to not open fire on ships. The civilian government and the IRGC don't even agree and it's not clear who's in power (the Ayatollah has been silent since he took office, it's not even clear if he's even alive), and the IRGC is also designed to have a "mosaic command structure" which means units can fracture and operate autonomously rather than only take orders from a clear central leadership, which leads to many "the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" situations. Even if you had utmost assurance from every IRGC unit in the area with an anti-ship missile battery or drone, you have no idea where the sea mines are. Iran even said they lost track. The ceasefire was always dead on arrival because it's simply unworkable, and the US leadership and Iranian leadership were working off completely different understandings of what the proposal was. And the Iranian civilian government the US was negotiating with is not necessarily in complete control of the IRGC, who at times has contradicted Iranian state media. You would be a fool to sail through the strait no matter what Iran says.
3
ExtremeMuffin Apr 18, 2026 +12
> There's zero confusion lol.  Tell that to the ships who tried sailing through and then turned around. Sounds like they were confused about the situation. Iran and the IRGC are not on the same page about this topic.

Infinite_Click_6589 Apr 18, 2026 +2
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the Trump administration paid those ships to sail towards the strait before a planned turn around.

A fully laden container ship can take from 1.4 to 4 nautical miles to come to a complete halt. Must be an absolute nightmare stopping and starting....
