Why are they making this movie?
198
Ok_Builder_4225 Apr 3, 2026 +98
WB wants money
98
tnolan182 Apr 3, 2026 +30
Why does Andy Serkis want to make this? Surely the dude has enough money
30
Ok_Builder_4225 Apr 3, 2026 +22
If the like of Musk and Zuck who have more money than god are still not satisfied with what they have, why would someone with a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of that money be satisfied? Plus maybe he just likes being Golum.
22
tnolan182 Apr 3, 2026 +12
Their are plenty of examples of people who get their millions in hollywood and nope out, let’s not assume everyone wants endless bags of cash just because zuck and musk do.
12
Ok_Builder_4225 Apr 3, 2026 +15
But lets also no assume that they don't

BornFree2018 Apr 4, 2026 +1
Many creatives and academics center their careers around a group of connected works, subjects or individuals. It’s not odd at all, and not necessarily about money. Shakespeare, Da Vinci and Tolkien have devoted followers. I don’t see anything weird about “the band” getting back together for a prequel because they’re obsessed by maintaining their original portrayals.

AnthropologicalSage Apr 4, 2026 +1
Musk and Zuck are out for power, not money.
1
runs_with_airplanes Apr 3, 2026 +2
They asked a baker how much will be enough? He responded with, “more”
2
AllenHo Apr 4, 2026 +4
A chance to direct a massive movie with all your friends and the people that helped make your career as well as star in it and also make a boat load of more money
4
sirjames82 Apr 3, 2026 +6
Could also be contractually obligated. The studio signs someone to a 3 picture deal and more or less tells them what movies there in. Like George Clooney in Batman and Robin.
6
brigadier_tc Apr 3, 2026 +1
And Roy Scheider for Jaws 2. Although he phoned it in waaaaaay less than Clooney. He has way more moments to actually act in Jaws 2
1
katsock Apr 3, 2026 +12
Andy Serkis is not the only person who would make money from this. There’s an entire crew and production team that will be employed from this. But nobody ever thinks about them getting a paycheck.
12
tnolan182 Apr 3, 2026 +7
Dont they have anything in the LoTR world better to pitch then this? Im all for supporting production crew but at certain point hollywood is going to realize that creating something people actually want to see is often more profitable than riding on the coattails of a 20 year old movie and nostalgia.

How about a potato cook book? "Potatoes: A Chef's Guide to Three Exquisite Preparations" -Foreword from the gardener
6
tricolorhound Apr 3, 2026 +5
Nope the LoTR universe is notoriously small in scale and scope, not much material to work with there.

Colbert has another LOTR movie planned and I'm genuinely interested in that, because Colbert's a Tolkien mega-fan and it's a passion project for him.

It is going to be really interesting to see what story he picks. There are so many good first age stories he could tell and has the knowledge to tell.

You can say the same about any f****** movie or show. C'mon man. What a horrible and nonsensical argument.
1
katsock Apr 6, 2026 +1
All I’m saying here is that projects pay more than just the big actors and often times we as consumers don’t consider just how many people work on a production. That is all. I’m not saying that means a show you don’t want to be made deserves to be made. The comment I was replying to was literally about the big name wanting/needing more money. I hope you feel better.
1
True_Pirate Apr 3, 2026
And with yet another theatrical turd flopping in the box office, how does that help their future employment?
0
katsock Apr 3, 2026 +1
That’s like saying you’ll never get a job again because the company you worked for had layoffs. I feel like you’re not actually thinking this through and you’re just trying to catch me in some imaginary gotcha. It’ll probably work great because they won’t have that much of a gap in their employment history, their skills were recognized by the production company that hired them, and they have actual experience seeing a production through to the end. And for that matter, they would be able to feed their family during the production, when the alternative may be not being on a production at all. How is that better?
1
True_Pirate Apr 3, 2026 +1
I am not trying to “get” you. I am saying that making slop that no one wants is harmful to the industry and the people who work in it in the long term Secondly, as much as I want to see people employed, I am not going to cheerlead trash just because some production people will benefit from it in the short term. Lastly, it’s not an either/or situation. The studio could cancel the film and put those resources towards a worthwhile production and those people can still be employed.
1
katsock Apr 3, 2026 +1
I’m not saying people should cheerlead trash. I’m saying people rarely consider that productions do more than put cash in the stars pocket. I think sometimes it is in fact an either or. That’s why I said the alternative *may be* and I think that’s why you said “can still be employed”. Have you ever been told that your job is gone but everyone can move to a new job? How has that worked out? Genuinely. Again, the only point I’m making is that productions some people think are terrible ideas or beating a dead horse will still bring jobs to people who need jobs. And unfortunately we will always need jobs. So when we say “how much more money does rich person need” it is not just about the rich person. Everyone on that crew could be the next person we all want to look out for.
1
True_Pirate Apr 3, 2026 +1
I think people understand that there are crew people that gets paid to work on a production. Many, like myself, don’t think that justifies a desparate studio cash grab and/or making a film whose sole purpose is to retain the rights. My larger point is that when they make said dogshit, and it gets terrible reviews and it flops and the franchise is put to bed, or the production company goes bust, or eventually the studio goes broke (Hi, Paramount!) how many jobs does that cost? Ultimately, this movie sounds like a bad idea. A bad idea that will likely lose money, or even if it makes a profit, will damage the brand. Just because a crew will get 16 weeks of work or whatever, that does not make the project a good idea.
1
firedmyass Apr 5, 2026 +1
bad movies don’t affect good crew prospects
1
Scruffylookin13 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I feel like a lot of the LotR crew can't escape it. They spent years of their life on it, the movies were cultural phenomenon, and the movies are defining peices of cinematic history.  Its probably like going back to your ex, trying to recapture a moment in time. You know its a bad idea and things are different now, but you want that magic in your life again.  Similarly to how PJ went back for the Hobbits, I'm sure there is a feeling of "Well someone is going to do it so it might as well be me"
1
Commercial-Fennel219 Apr 4, 2026
He will never be rid of his need for it. He hates and loves the role, as he hates and loves himself. Andy's life is a sad story. Yes, Andy he was once called. Before the role found him. Before it drove him mad.

Maybe he misses the character that made his legacy and got him into mo cap and just want to do it for fun/nostalgia
1

I just don't want Andy Serkis in a production role. You're Gollum dude, that's all.

And also sometimes fans don’t know what they want, and great art just explains itself See: Andor.

Because The Hobbit movies made about 3 Billion dollars even though they were mediocre slop. They're hoping for a repeat of "frothing fanbase will stan for anything official" It usually works.

I am frankly very happy about this--partially because he's older and I hate de-aging generally. It also helps separate this from the original movies, so it cuts down on the "ruining my childhood" complaints people will inevitably have if/when this movie is a bit of a turd. Not that I want it to be! But it just seems like it could be. What I don't want is new-Aragorn surrounded by digitally de-aged Gandalf and others. I know Gandalf already looked old and, yes, Ian is in great shape for being as old as he is, but it's still going to be noticeable--and I still don't want to see classic Gandalf sitting next to new Aragorn. Recast everyone, de-age everyone, or just animate the whole thing--there are already so many reasons this movie could end up complete ass, a bunch of de-aged actors running around with a gorgeous young Aragorn does not need to be one of them. Having said all that: Good luck to that one guy or whomever they cast as Aragorn. They nailed it with Viggo--as others have said, even when grimy, there's something instantly trustworthy, honest, and regal about him. He's not threatening to women, he's inspiring to men, he's just drop-dead gorgeous, and he just freaking looks like a long lost king I'd follow to the ends of the earth. Thank you for your service, Viggo!
28
ScipioCoriolanus Apr 3, 2026 +10
>It also helps separate this from the original movies That would've been the case if they recast everyone. Now it will only feel weird and inconsistent.
10
Tibbaryllis2 Apr 3, 2026 +3
Second this. They should have recast everyone and then they could have used the new actors in additional works (such as what Jackson and Colbert are cooking) going forward for quite some time. Or they could have used all original actors. Using a mix is…. The worst of both.
3
Icesticker Apr 6, 2026 +1
There is a lot of potential in Gandalf's story like the blue wizards so recasting him with the intention of using him for the future would be a good idea.
1
yusill Apr 3, 2026 +1
its the hunt for Gollum. so its pre fellowship right? what possible reason would he be around anyone from the previous movies? he didn't know Legolas or Gimli before. Gandalf maybe cuz hes the one that sends him, but thats about all he does.
1
kafrillion Apr 3, 2026 +3
>or just animate the whole thing That's my preference as well. Make it like _The War of the Rohirrim_, make it like _Arcane_ or nigh-photorealistic, like a Hideo Kojima game or _Avatar_ - I am sure Andy Serkis has one or two bits of knowledge around CGI and mocap. Have to OG cast do the voices. Problem solved.
3
Icesticker Apr 6, 2026 +1
I think it depends how much Gandalf and others are in it. If it is just a small cameo role like how Frodo was in the Hobbit, it could work. If Gandalf is in more than one scene going "find this creature for me" then yeah recast or just have it as like a narrator voice over done by Ian

Movie shouldn’t be made in the first place.. first that awful Amazon show now this. Literally destroying tolkiens legacy

Last time I checked, Gollum was at the bottom of a volcano. Frodo saw the whole thing. They can call off the search now.

Its a prequel brother
7
thedrivingcoomer Apr 3, 2026
Oh...so you mean The Hobbit?
0
yusill Apr 3, 2026 +3
post hobbit pre LOTR, they talk about him being tracked by the dark lord and finally captured. there is a story to it.
3
RayTracerX Apr 3, 2026 +2
Not the Dark Lord, Aragorn captures him, thats why hes necessary
2
yusill Apr 3, 2026 +1
ya thought he was being tracked then Aragorn got him first, then somehow he got away from aragorn(fuzzy on this part) and ends up tortured in mordor, gives up Baggins name etc etc the begining of the LOTR.
1
RayTracerX Apr 3, 2026 +1
No, its mentioned in LOTR that Gandalf sent Aragorn to find and bring Gollum to safety before Sauron got to him. Thats the story they are going to tell. We dont have specifics, but the premise is indeed canon
1
wretched__hive Apr 3, 2026 +7
Good luck to whoever that may be. Tough to fill those shoes.
7
WCland Apr 3, 2026 +7
Okay, what’s the plot? Gandalf asks Aragorn to find Gollum. He finds Gollum, tortures him for information then gives him to the elves. Gollum escapes from the elves. Sequel: Gollum goes to Mordor and gets tortured by Sauron. Then Sauron lets Gollum escape. Can we squeeze a third movie out of that?
7
yusill Apr 3, 2026 +6
at least 5. 1.5 of them will just be helicopter shots of ppl running through new Zealand. and a 30 min epic single shot gollum fighting for a fish in a stream.
6
Logical-Balance9075 Apr 3, 2026 +40
No one will top Viggo but I think Richard Madden would do a good job in the role.

His [look in Medici ](https://decider.com/2016/12/09/medici-masters-of-florence-netflix/)was pretty close to Viggo.

This or honestly Kit Harrington would also work but i think Richard Madden is a great choice. Kits face is more round Richards is longer so closer to Viggo

I stand corrected, i always mentally picture him with kind of a pudgeier face? maybe thats an earlier season when he was still a ked.
0
Lonevarg_7 Apr 3, 2026
Perhaps, or it was just the angle. Anyways Richard is closer in height to Viggo and they have similar eye color, so Richard would probably a closer choice still.

3
BananasPineapple05 Apr 3, 2026 +11
I'm at peace with this choice. Aragorn isn't supposed to age normally and Viggo's only human. Also, Viggo's an artist. He looks ahead, not backwards.

> Viggo Mortensen will not be reprising the role of Aragorn in Andy Serkis‘ “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.” Serkis, who is directing the movie and returning in front of the camera as Gollum, confirmed in an interview with ScreenRant that Aragorn will be recast in the next Middle-earth film tentpole. > “I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone,” Serkis revealed.

Viggo is a class act, an artist with credibility, I have massive respect for him. I watched him in a few interviews and he is so smart and grounded.  There was one interview on the red carpet in particular I remember where he didn't want to indulge one pretty vapid reporter asking him stupid provocative questions on the red carpet, he called her out and showed her that her question was inappropriate and he would have nothing to do with it, I loved him at that moment.
2

Don't recast. The world doesn't want that, we want Viggo,...sure. he's 60 now. But CGI his face younger...

No, they should not digitally de age him. He will still look old. Just look at deniro in The Irishman.
5
ScipioCoriolanus Apr 3, 2026 +2
They should recast everyone then. Why just Viggo? The movie will look like a monstrosity that doesn't know what it wants to be.
2

Nah, Viggo is only 67 and which is better than 77 and I like to think he lives a better much more active life than Robert de Niro did at that age. In my mind, a Viggo starts every day with a little bit of sword fighting to stay agile in case they ever need him for another Lord of the rings movie

Anyone in the Trump administration, and those are the only DEI hires you should be worrying about in life.
