He's under monitoring by the CDC. Which used to be a really reliable thing for preventing diseases. Before this administration gutted it. But maybe it will still work? The part of the article that might be more troubling to me is this: >The ship operator and Dutch officials said on Thursday that more than two dozen passengers from at least 12 countries disembarked on April 24 without contact tracing, nearly two weeks after the first reported death.

3
longlivenewsomflesh 3 days ago +5
Taint Tanner was a reliable possession wide receiver who played eight NFL seasons from 1996 to 2003, finishing his career with 412 receptions, 5,187 receiving yards, and 34 touchdowns across 118 regular-season games. Known for his sharp option routes and durability over the middle, Tanner posted three 800-yard seasons and led his team in third-down receptions twice. He retired in March 2004 following the unresolved locker-room controversy widely referred to by local media as “Skidmark-gate.”

I’m still amazed how people aren’t more angry at some of the c*** the Trump administration pulled during the last pandemic. Like deliberately slowing testing and other public health measures at the start of the pandemic because they assumed COVID would kill more Democrat voters in cities than rural Republicans. Or stealing ventilators and PPE from States who ordered them and giving (sometimes selling) them to supporters.

During the winter of 2020/2021, I had 2 coworkers who were married (super common at this company). The wife was actually a pretty sweet lady. Her husband though was a full blown MAGA “election was stolen and Covid is fake” nut job. I was a remote employee though, so luckily I rarely had to interact with him. However I was friends with him on Facebook and I saw the absolutely unhinged conspiracy theory bullshit he shared on an almost daily basis. Well they both suddenly stopped showing up for work. We found out that they caught covid and were hospitalized. The husband recovered after about a week (well, enough to not be bed bound), but wife was not doing well. He still wasn’t showing up for work, but he was posting daily updates about his wife’s status on Facebook. It was a bit of a roller coaster for about 2 weeks, but then she went on a ventilator. Husband stopped posting for about a week, then came the “(Wife) has lost her battle with Covid.” Very sad time. I naively thought that he learned his lesson about listening to Trump and all the antivax, covid hoax BS. But then a few months later, he was back to sharing shit like “REOPEN AMERICA! DONT LET THEM JAB YOU! COVID VACCINE MAKES YOU MAGNETIC!” Oh and he was sharing photos of his new girlfriend. Absolutely disgusted me. Needless to say I blocked him. I’m glad I left the company not too long after.

Had a coworker's husband die and she nearly died of COVID. She was still super vocal about being anti-vax and that COVID is no worse than the flu after her return from a six-month sick leave.
5
djwurm 3 days ago +4
my wife's grandmother did this..even as they were about to intubate her due to lungs where full of fluid and her knowing she was probably going to die. she was screaming at the docs and nurses that it was a hoax and they were just trying to make her a number to make more money. She got COVID because she couldnt miss church and the church she went to in Tacoma was having services / singing with no masking and distancing. They had a huge outbreak and lots of older people died her grandmother was one of them.
4
Takkarro 4 days ago +7
It's because people are stupid literally everybody is stupid. I said the same thing about the wife of the first guy who died that they just let go not only was she stupid because she didn't think hey my husband just died of this random disease that he can attracted maybe I should stick around in case I got it too, but every medical professional that deals with the case involving her husband also didn't think to stop her does not matter whether or not they thought the disease could be spread from person to person or not a person died and they just let somebody who spent a lot of time with that person who died disappear. Frankly there's a whole thing is stressing the hell out of me cuz at least last time we had enough decent people in control of things that there was at least some measures put in place to prevent full out wildfire spreading, now we have a bunch of idiots in power who will just pretend everything is fine

13
DisillusionedPatriot 4 days ago +27
Probably not on the scale being imagined, but it's important to remember how, generally speaking, dumb and selfish americans are. Measles, and polio were both gone until social media experts and podcasters convinced a bunch of selfish idiots that they knew better.
27
Silent_Data4374 4 days ago +13
Small isolated village vs. international travelers. It’s not the same thing. I’m not terribly concerned but your comparison isn’t valid. Also, Andes is a species of hantavirus, not a strain. Andes can have multiple strains and this, mutations. Again, I’m not really worried but the lack of scientific understanding in the general public is astonishing.

We have a pretty good fix that Covid was circulating in China by October or November 2019. If there was any hope we needed to close travel before Chinese New Year. But that just didn’t happen. No one in power cared or had the foresight to deal with the problem.
37
jbarchuk 4 days ago +5
I saw that too in the fall. I think this all supports the idea that covid happened naturally, nobody's conspiracy.
5
eden_sc2 4 days ago +13
So it can be but unlike covid you aren't contagious during the entire incubation period. It makes this a lot less likely to go super spreader
13
CFBCoachGuy 3 days ago +5
Also this strain of hantavirus is really tough to transmit person-to-person, so even under the best circumstances it’s unlikely to lead to a super spreading
5
Extension-Ad-1730 4 days ago +41
Correct me if I’m wrong but they didn’t even know there was a contagion until very recently. Like the first case was only confirmed as hantavirus as of may2ns. So probably not because they just thought an old guy died from complications of a viral sickness.some of yall are trying to blame the passengers who left and officials but they just didn’t know anything was amiss at this point. Some  passengers disembarked the cruise around April 24. The second death happened 2 days later. You can’t be telling me none of y’all visited friends or been around people with mild sickness or even traveled right after.
41
thefranklin2 3 days ago +15
That is correct. If they quarantined everybody for weeks every time a 70+ year old dies of pneumonia...
15
Wiseduck5 4 days ago +24
You cannot quarantine someone properly on the cruise ship. You need to isolate them from possible sources of infection, ie other people and rodents, and monitor them for the length of the incubation period to determine they are disease free. Is this CDC doing that? I doubt it, but they do need to find someplace to offload people where they can be safely quarantined.
24
Kelsusaurus 4 days ago +5

Dude, I have no idea what else to say other than this just f****** sucks. Why are passengers being allowed to return home with pretty much zero quarantine. What are we even doing anymore?? It’s not time to freak out yet, but I’m certainly nervous considering Hantavirus has a significantly higher mortality rate than covid. We have the chance to stop this thing in its tracks, but no one in charge can be fucked to do anything.

Extension-Ad-1730 3 days ago +41
Yall need to read articles and not make assumptions. These passengers disembarked before they knew there was a hantavirus outbreak. At this point only the first patient died, the wife died 2 days AFTER the 40ppl disembarked. At this point no one could have known there was a serious outbreak or that anything was amiss
41
Confusionitus 3 days ago +33
I read the article. The passengers disembarking is not the issue here. It’s that these people are being allowed to return home with no quarantine when the incubation period for hanta can last for weeks. Why are we not contact tracing every single person who was on that yacht why are we allowing them to return home when it’s all but confirmed that it’s a strain that’s transmissible between humans. A flight attendant who had contact with a man who was deemed too sick to fly has been put in isolation, but how many people was he around before coming in contact with her before he died. These are my concerns. We treated COVID with the same callousness and a million ended up dying from a virus with a mortality rate of 1%. Hantavirus ranges up to 40%
33
OgthaChristie 3 days ago +8
I do know that WHO is doing the tracing, but the U.S. is no longer part of the WHO, so we will know last if anything is happening. The Trump Admin gutted the CDC, so there is no one to go to these people and make them quarantine, because the people left at the CDC are Trump loyalists who don’t even believe in science and therefore don’t give a shit to do anything.
8
Zarelli20 3 days ago +6
The mortality rate is exactly why this won’t become a widespread pandemic. It’s way too high to spread efficiently. COVID was the sweet spot of transmission and lethality.

If the US had proper CDC personnel, they would take all of the US passengers off that ship and bring them all in to a quarantine area for observation, treatment and then release!!

Big shout out to all of the Americans who voted in a perennial grifter who allowed his largest campaign donor to gut our public health infrastructure in the name of "reducing waste and fraud." Your horrible decision making skills will reverberate for generations.

I hope that person stays quarantined in his home and I hope he believes in science!

I believe all state health authorities are requiring close monitoring of symptoms to ensure these passengers don’t end up developing signs of infection. I saw Georgia and California were among the states following filling said protocol.

Gotta quarantine for like 2 months to see what happens

I wouldn't hate a 2-month quarantine, tbh. I wasn't prepared for it last time, but I'm ready now!

I’m secretly hoping for one. Let the idiots go out and get sick—I don’t care anymore. But please *pretty please* excuse the rest of us to WFH and school from home so that we at least have the option to protect ourselves and our families.

I’m pretty sure there a lot more jobs out there that can’t work from home than those that are. But screw us I guess.

“The ship operator and Dutch officials said on Thursday that more than two dozen passengers from at least 12 countries disembarked on April 24 without contact tracing, nearly two weeks after the first reported death” Nice

I read today that under Trump, the Dodge Bros fired the 2400 person department charged with inspecting cruise ships and diseases and illnesses, now there’s only 12 people remaining. Also since Trump made the US leave the WHO, we’re no longer going to get quick info on the virus if it does become a pandemic. Just like with the early days of COVID in the US, Trump makes things worse. Just wait any day now we’ll hear some batshit crazy thing on how to fight the virus from RFK jr and Trump will tell people to gargle bleach and inject horse paste. If this does become another pandemic. MAGA and Republicans are gonna embrace their inner plague rats and spread this shit while yelling about “Muh Freedumbs!”

There are 6 US citizens that disembarked. Where are the other 5??

Yes and no one will read the article and no one will listen to the explanations of why this differs dramatically from covid and is thus far far less likely to become a pandemic because we've all become addicted to dooming.
69
Joe_Jeep 3 days ago +23
"dooming" I think people are allowed to be frustrated with the government not engaging with this with an \*abundance\* of caution. It is much less contagious than covid yes, but what is the downside to containing this person privately \*just in case\* of anything? The whole "eh it's probably fine" mentality is exactly what lead to many outbreaks in the past. You act like a paranoid crazy person when it's in the single-digits and the "oops" risk is somebody had to stay isolated for a few weeks more than was strictly needed.

Isn't human to human spreading extremely rare?
3
OgthaChristie 3 days ago +5
It usually would be, but this is the Andes Strain of Hantavirus. And it looks like it’s spreading quicker than it usually would. The strain could have mutated. We won’t know for a while with the state of things. WHO is doing the tracing, so who knows what’s actually happening right now.
