Umm... didn't Taiwan buy a shit ton of weapons that US still hasn't delivered on?
Is this just a shakedown where US doesn't even pretend they're going to deliver the weapons? Is the money going directly into Trump's personal accounts?

No, this is a set up to blame Taiwan for being invaded and Donald not lifting a finger to defend them.

Wait, why people compare Taiwan to Hong Kong? They are not even remotely similar.

When the Chinese government steamrolls a democratic Hong Kong and Trump does nothing? Yup.
And I've lived in both Taiwan and HK, so you're not going to teach me about them.
Edit: Got it. So you have never heard of one country two systems, and that disqualifies you from commenting because you don't know what you're talking about.

I'll try anway: Hong Kong was never democratic.
Comparing Hong Kong (which has been back to China since 1997) to de-facto independent Taiwan indeed doesn't make any sense.

If taiwan is invaded then the global economy collapses. Trump wants that?

Were you one of the people saying Russia's just saber-rattling when Putin parked an army on the border with Ukraine?
Trump gives a shit about one thing, and it's Trump.

I was in Taiwan last month. The general feeling I got was they are wary of China and think fondly of Japan but fear the mango Hitler.

haha, naw. Washington only wants money and to offload some outdated shit.
It's basically to collect some protection fee with promises that aren't even worth the paper they're printed on.

They won't make any deliveries. American procurement is basically an embezzlement - they'll get contract money and restock themselves. Exactly what they are planning to do with money from PURL - the program for procurement of weapons for Ukraine, funded by NATO countries, and what they already communicated to European countries waiting in line for deliveries of their contracted weapons.

If I were Taiwan, I'd buy Korean. At least they are making deliveries on time.

Highly doubt Korea wants to do high profile arms transfer to Taiwan. Afaik there’s some bad history there in the 90s and in recent times especially under left wing government, Korea has stayed out of the Taiwan issue.

No country aside from the US dare to sell arms to Taiwan.
