I would think that the introductory scene of his showdown with the cartel guy in Miami would set the expectation that folks are gonna get shot in this series.

Yeah, Just how though, says it was an accidental discharged, and Im just thinking how you could do that, unless he was cleaning it.

I saw it happen with a guy who was carrying his pistol and and an arm load of groceries. It had only a trigger safety, and he bumped the hammer as he was carrying stuff into the kitchen and was shot in a similar area.

I'm personally a fan of "that pool was my dream." LOL. Also I can't count the amount of times I've said "get some buckets" when any amount of water is spilled. My wife is the only one who chuckles, one day someone else will laugh and it will be great.

It's essentially like a western, but in a modern setting. It takes a bit to get going, but the writing is so good.

Honestly I don't know any show that really explains what it is about in the first episode, arguably in the first ten minutes, as well as Justified.

Without giving any plot away, it's interesting how the show shifted from episodic to more serialized storytelling.
96
communistwookiee Apr 16, 2026 +44
The didn't get their full season order until after the sixth episode of the first season. That's why it really picks up in episode seven.
44
BattleHall Apr 17, 2026 +4
Also, IIRC Boyd was originally supposed to die in the dinner table shootout in Ep.1, but once they started cutting together the episode they realized they had lightning in a bottle in the chemistry between Olyphant and Goggins, so they tacked on the ambulance scene to show he survived and started writing the parallel Boyd plot lines, starting a couple episodes in. Unfortunately, that did cut into the screen time of some of the other Marshalls, who I believe were supposed to be more prominent characters in the original show concept.
4
CommissarThrace Apr 18, 2026 +3
Justified is one of my favorite shows and I cannot imagine it without goggins. Hes such a good foil. They definitely had some magic with this one.
3
notches123 Apr 18, 2026 +2
This is such a weird phenomenon on listnook and especially this show. This is completely not true. Justified was given a full 13-episode order by FX on July 28, 2009 — months before it even premiered on March 16, 2010. What did happen mid-season was the renewal for a second season. FX ordered a second season on May 3, 2010, at which point six episodes of season one still remained. The confusion gets a little more murky or understandable when you factor in the actual real life change that happened after the pilot episode with the Boyd character. After surviving the gunshot in the pilot, Boyd is sent to prison and he's largely absent from the show for the first chunk of the season. He doesn't get released until around episode six or seven, at which point Goggins' presence becomes dramatically more prominent in the back half. That's how someone could reasonably scramble all of that into what you heard: they correctly remember that Boyd is sidelined early on, and that the show genuinely does feel different once he's back and active. They also vaguely recall the real story that keeping Boyd alive at all was an unplanned, reactive decision made after the pilot. Combine those two true things and it's easy to misremember it as "they didn't really commit to Goggins until midway through the season." From there it's a short, sloppy leap to "they didn't get their full season order until episode six, that's why it picks up in episode seven." The full 13-episode order was actually in place before the show ever aired, so the network pickup story is just wrong. But Boyd being in prison for the first portion of the season does create a real, noticeable before-and-after quality to season one that makes the false version feel intuitive when someone is half-remembering it.
2
djkhan23 Apr 17, 2026 +13
Season 2 is clearly the best season and deserves a place in the all time tv season lists in a tier below say The Wire S4 or True Detective s1.
13
notches123 Apr 18, 2026 +2
On the Justified sublistnook there is a large and vocal contingent that believe season 4 is actually the superior season of the series (nobody thinks 2 is bad though). Season 4 truthers unite!
2
djkhan23 Apr 18, 2026 +2
That's the..season with the hidden mystery guy right? Havent seen the show since it ended (didn't bother with Primevil) but I would rank that as the clearthe 2nd best season. Mags was the best villain so that puts 2 over it for me. Why do people say 4 is better?
2
notches123 Apr 18, 2026 +3
Yup. The mystery format, the ensemble depth, the way every character gets a moment — it is less a TV Neo-Western and more like a Elmore Leonard paperback that happens to be on screen. Season 4 specifically subverts the usual seasonal big bad guy format, which is also what appeals to a lot of us I think. Also, the episode Decoy in season 4 is considered by most fans the best episode of the series.
3
djkhan23 Apr 18, 2026 +2
Part of what made season 2 so special for me was its overall jump in quality. S1 is ok but it didn't have the standard modern tv long story format that most shows follow today. Imo only Hannibal had a stronger s1 to 2 improvement. Cause I remember being in a specific Justified kind of thread/community and it was never mentioned once that s4 was the best. I remember some thoughts about it being a little ridiculous. Guess I'm due for a justified rewatch either way to find out.
2
notches123 Apr 18, 2026 +2
I was actually going to suggest a re-watch because the perception (and fan base) has grown and evolved since it ended. Season two is still largely considered the best season by most fans but there's a non-negligible contingent that prefer season 4. And it's not adversarial. We all love every season. We just think season 4 is the best and often think season 2 is the second best. I also suggest it because season one is usually better for people on -rewatch and it's a show that is highly rewatchable too. Because we didn't know where the show was going we tend to remember it as being strictly procedural in season one but in reality even in those first few episode that were more procedural they are sprinkling bits of Harlan lore and Raylan's backstory which becomes the engine that drives season 2 (the whole Bennett feud) and the rest of the series (including the Drew Thompson mystery having deep Harlan roots and connections to both the Givens and Crowder families). So I highly recommend it. It's an extremely well-written show
2
kleenexbrandkleenex Apr 16, 2026 +22
Yep you get like 4 episodes of "here's what a marshal does" and then the story starts.
22
NoNefariousness2144 Apr 17, 2026 +7
Episode 4 does stand out to me for being pretty great for a standalone case-of-the-week. Alan Ruck’s role is one of the more memorable despite >!only being in one episode!<
7
R_V_Z Apr 16, 2026 +7
That's a lot of shows. X-Files (and Fringe), Person of Interest, Buffy, etc. Eventually writers have established the characters and the tone of the series and want to write more interesting things.

Moving from villain of the week to a more arc focused narrative with side quests was the best thing they ever did.

It's more like dad tv can also be good tv. Dad has a point now and again.
2
fate_is_a_sandstorm Apr 18, 2026 +3
I think the “dad TV” label is overused and used with prejudice, for sure. Like the Mission Impossible movies could be deemed as dad TV, but damn do I love them and am willing to stop in my tracks to watch if I see them on TV. The label seems to be pointed at action-forward media where you can turn your brain off, get swept up, and have fun. I think it’s a bad sign of culture that we view that as a negative thing. Being able to mentally escape as an adult is a blessing, not a curse.

Ringosis Apr 16, 2026 +10
It's very deliberately meant to be a gunslinging Western set in modern day. You're supposed to just roll with it and accept that it's not trying to be realistic. It's trying to be entertaining.
10
artinacart Apr 17, 2026 +2
it always amused me that it’s a modern western, set in kentucky. a state in the eastern half of the US i know it’s the genre and not the location but it still makes me laugh and always will probably in the same way fart jokes will always make me laugh lol
2
notches123 Apr 18, 2026 +1
It's specifically a Neo-Western if that helps.
1
Vaosiv Apr 16, 2026 +10
IMO, Season 1 is a good introduction to the characters but didn't feel like it told a story until the last few episodes. The remainder of the show became one of my all time greats. They do a much better job of making the characters likable and drawing you in and the season finales are always top notch. In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky....
10
GuerrillaApe Apr 16, 2026 +9
Two things are certain in Justified. 1. Raylan is gonna shoot someone in a scenario that maybe could have been dealt with in a more de-escalating manner. 2. Raylan is gonna say some badass quote.

weeble182 Apr 16, 2026 +23
After my fifth Deadwood watch, we decided to give it a go because we needed for Olyphant in our lives. Honestly didn't really enjoy the first six or so episodes, but you can actively see them retooling the show as it goes along and now halfway into season 2, we are hooked. Keep at it
23
fate_is_a_sandstorm Apr 16, 2026 +15
Justified and Parks & Rec are always my go-to examples of why I’m often VERY forgiving with the first season of a show. So many of them find their footing once the actors and writers have enough time to figure out the characters better.
15
RealMcGonzo Apr 16, 2026 +23
Once Boyd Crowder becomes a regular fixture on the show, it goes from pretty good to epic.
23
Scu-bar Apr 16, 2026 +8
He was supposed to die in the pilot, iirc. But Walton Goggins did such a great job they rewrote it to keep him in.
8
nycdiveshack Apr 16, 2026 +7
Check out deadwood (show&movie) when you finish justified (if the original is 10/10 the reboot of justified is like 5-6/10, 2nd season might be better)
7
ElectronicNerve3475 Apr 17, 2026 +5
That’s the show that got me here. I finished it like a month ago and I needed a new show. Deadwood was awesome
5
nycdiveshack Apr 17, 2026 +3
I was the reverse, watched justified then found out about deadwood the show. When I watched deadwood I was like wait so many ppl in justified are in deadwood but ofc it’s the opposite. Justified is truly one of those shows with no filler so you should be able to enjoy it begin to end. Have fun

I like how every episode has the bad guy with his gun drawn saying “you really think you can draw your gun faster than I can shoot”
13
redditingtonviking Apr 16, 2026 +18
Except that one guy with a knife. Probably the most memorable duel in the series.
18
Steamedcarpet Apr 16, 2026 +2
The one that just tries to run up on him? I had to rewind that a few times
2
redditingtonviking Apr 16, 2026 +9
Yeah he had a line about him being able to run up and stab people within 21 feet before they could get off a shot. Might have even positioned himself slightly closer to Raylan before their duel started.
9
Steamedcarpet Apr 16, 2026 +7
Haha yes I remember now. I think they even set up the hole he trips in earlier in the episode. That freaking Florida family.

4
fzammetti Apr 16, 2026 +5
HOLY SHIT IT'S A PIGGY BANK! Still a television all-time top 5 line delivery. But ironically, just one of many in a great show stuffed with them.
5
Y-27632 Apr 16, 2026 +4
I'm pretty sure he only kills two people in the first three episodes. The show definitely has plenty of gunplay early on to set the tone, but it'd be insane (and kind of farcical) if he actually shot or killed someone in every episode. Raylan doesn't even have the highest kill count in the series.
4
ElectronicNerve3475 Apr 16, 2026 +3
Yeah I guess you are right. They all didn’t die. The dude in Miami ep1. Boyd survived his shot in ep 2. Ep 3 he got the scammer dude. He def shoots someone each ep at the start though
3
PopeGreego Apr 17, 2026 +4
Binged the whole series recently. Every time he’d shoot someone I’d turn to my wife and say “don’t worry, he was justified.” Never got old.
4
spb8982 Apr 16, 2026 +3
It's been a while since I've seen the show but doesn't he give fair warning to everyone he shoots?
3
ElectronicNerve3475 Apr 17, 2026 +4
Yes, and everyone thinks they can outdraw him. You would think with everyone knowing him from the shootout in Miami that made national news that he was the truth. Not to mention how fast his gun was in deadwood 😂
4
rojoshow13 Apr 16, 2026 +3
I think I've seen about 3 episodes as well. He has tried to talk everyone out of having a shootout.
3
fate_is_a_sandstorm Apr 16, 2026 +4
If you put it down after those episodes, I’d definitely recommend getting back into it. It gets much better by about halfway through the season and becomes truly amazing by season 2
4
rojoshow13 Apr 16, 2026 +3
I haven't put it down. I never had a chance to watch it before, but I recently subscribed to Disney+ and that's just as far as I've gotten.

I get that most of his actions were justified, however him destroying the pool of Dewey was not and frankly he is responsible for that.
3
grazzac Apr 17, 2026 +3
It's a brilliant show, and throughout you see Raylan making increasingly morally dubious decisions, which while framed from the perspective of him being the good guy, the viewer gets to question whether he's just as much a criminal as the antagonists of the season.
3
ihearthogsbreath Apr 17, 2026 +3

Pretty par for the course. If it helps. They acknowledge this in the show and at least pay lip service to how unusual it is.

Raylan is lucky he doesn't have to wear a bodycam

He's a cowboy cop in a modern setting. It explores his actions, and the consequences both direct and indirect, thrugjoutbthe series.

In the deep dark hills of eastern Kentucky. Wondering which cover each season was going to end with was pretty exciting.

Amazing show, enjoy it

One of the best shows ever made and Goggins gives an all-time best performance as Raylan's archnemesis Boyd Crowder.

And the actor that plays Dewey Crowe, his portrayal of Manson in Mindhunter amazing.

Fine I'll take this as another sign to give the show another shot. Between the Judge in The Good Place and stuff popping up in my feed, the universe must be sending signals.

And you ain't even got to where it gets good... Couple more episodes and it's a banger after banger.

Is it worth it? I’ve been debating giving it a shot but difficult to commit

One of my top 3 all time shows, raylan might be my favorite character period and the whole show is good from start to finish and rewatchable as hell

I mean its a Modern Day western, and its awesome. I LOVE Raylands no bullshit attitude, and also his chemistry with Boyd is fantastic.

Yeah one of Raylan's key character traits is he is very quick to kill people.

I've been filling some dead time with Tracker from CBS and it's even worse. The last episode I watched he gunned down 6 "bad guys" and that same night was packing up his airstream and leaving town. I was like WUT? He'd spend 6 hours being interviewed by police at minimum and certainly not allowed to skip town. He's not even LEO, he's almost a bounty hunter for missing people.

Jesus, Raylan!

Later in the series, he says,"You meet an ass hole in the morning, you've met an ass hole. If you meet ass holes all day, you're the ass hole."

Stick with it.

benguin88 Apr 17, 2026 +1
I agree that it is so funny in the early episodes that they keep saying, Raylan stop shooting people. And he just keeps shooting people. Eventually they kind of just give up on making it a big deal. But it is funny how the early episodes make it a big deal but he just keeps shooting.

Justified is one of the best shows ever made. Raylan and Boyds relationship is Shakespearian. I watch the whole thing about once a year. Enjoy the ride...

This thread is full of spoilers of great scenes or lines OP. They are justified because the show is awesome but yeah. Maybe don't read everything. The show is awesome.

Think of it as holy shit Winona is a smokeshow. Also do the no no, get the pew pew. It's a western. And Walton Goggins is f****** unbelievable as Boyd Crowder. Maybe my favorite role of his.
