Watching long duration videos as well as reading forums and discussions to replace doomscrolling

Posted by Hybrid_Intelligence

It has been more than 10 days since i had last doomscroll, and I feel restored. The constant scrolling suppressed my creativity and drowned most of my thoughts. I am actually surprised on the detail and depth of my thoughts- I can't remember the last time i was able to achieve this level of thinking. It dawned on me that I had actually experienced the detrimental effects of mindlessly consuming digital content. Yes, we do gain information during doomscrolling, but then we quickly lose them. We can't retain most of the contents that we watched, so at the end of the day it feels like time flies by faster than usual, and our day feels mundane and empty. I can't recall the hours that i wasted on doomscrolling, when I can actually complete my work way ahead of time. I was thinking, what would happen to me in the future if I continued this habit. Doomscrolling seems like a norm now. Waiting for a long queue? Doomscroll. Waiting for dinner? Doomscroll. Waiting for a reply? Doomscroll. To me, filling my leisure with doomscroll is similar to partially switching my brain off to consume enormous amount of information that i might forget in 1 hour. Avoiding short-form contents has significantly restored my attention span and thinking process, as well as expanded my knowledge. I wished I ditched this degenerative habit sooner, but I am thankful that I did, before it's too late.

Honestly that’s impressive, congrats. Breaking out of doomscrolling isn’t easy at all. Sounds like it’s made a real difference too, which is awesome to see.

I feel you OP. I felt the same way when I forced myself to stop my doomscrolling habit once I realized it was increasing my anxiety and causing me loss of memory and worsening my attention span. I started putting daily limits on my phone for doomscrolling and each day I started to decrease the time until eventually my max time in my phone for doomscrolling was 15 mins a day. I felt so much better in the end and the struggle was definitely worth it
