'We don't recommend' — Zelensky warns foreign officials against attending Russia's Victory Day parade
"(Russia) wants permission from Ukraine to hold their parade, so they can safely march onto the square for one hour once a year, and then go back to killing our people and waging war again," President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

Nothing says “victory” more than your leader not attending a parade himself while no military hardware is available for the parade either lol

I totally want him to tweet something like "EVACUATE NOW" at the parade, and then leave it alone.

Fly in some drones to drop blue and yellow confetti. Maybe some Swan Lake pamphlets as well.

Educational-Wing2042 May 8, 2026 +188
F*** that drop bombs if drones get that close. They’re actively at war and Ukrainian cities are regularly hit. Screw the double standards.

unematti May 8, 2026 +214
It's not about that tho. It's about the humiliation without giving them any opportunity to stoke the fires of nationalism. Humiliation without casualties will reduce moral, while bombing Moscow will definitely anger the people and they'll be able to sign up more soldiers. The same reason why Ukrainians are so determined. If anything civilian, oligarch homes should be a target. Maybe media, take out tv and radio broadcasts so they can't propagandise. It really isn't a double standard, nobody really endorses what Russia is doing to Ukrainian civilians, it's the same standard

Nostonica May 9, 2026 +19
Eh, Russia's whole thing is projecting absolute power, that is the Tzar is powerful, the communist party is powerful and that Putin is powerful. If they're having to deal with a attack on one of the more important parades in their capital and are powerless to do anything about it, then the projection fails. Confetti just means the enemy wouldn't dare attack the powerful russian state, bombs means the the leadership are weak.
19
WastingMyLifeToday May 9, 2026 +68
An attack on the parade wouldn't be beneficial for Ukraine. It would reinforce the idea that Ukraine is the bad guy, as they're now targeting civilians. Confetti or leaflets is a show of force "these could've been bombs, but we don't attack civilians". It ruins decades of russian propaganda that tried to put Ukraine as the bad guy, and it crushes morale for russians.
68
unematti May 9, 2026 +6
I guess that's one way to think about it. Maybe they could deliver propaganda leaflets?(I'm trying to be a pacifist here. Even tho I have strong opinions on both big wars going on). Or like in north Korea, deliver USB drives full of the stuff straight into Moszkva

Nah, you send the drones with confetti to the parade, then when their defenses are distracted you send the drones with bombs to targets that have actual strategic significance. Taking out oil refineries and weapons manufacturing capabilities will help Ukraine way more than disrupting Russia's j****** session
34
goldcakes May 9, 2026 +13
Nah, drones with confetti would leave more humiliation and psychological damage to a parade with no useful military hardware.

They want permission from Ukraine to hold their parade, so they can safely march onto the square for one hour once a year, and then go back to killing our people and waging war again," Zelensky said in his evening address on May 7. According to the Ukrainian president, some Russia-friendly countries reached out to Ukraine about their officials' plans to attend the May 9 parade in Moscow. "An odd desire… these days. We don't recommend it," he added. Hahaha I love his mind. Keep up the good work Zelensky! Nolite te bastardes carborundorum!

I've said it before, i know Zelenskyy used to be a comedian, but I find it remarkable how well he uses humour and levity while his country is at war with a tyrant. And he still feels like he commands such presence. It feels like we always see him, whereas putin seems to always be hiding in fear.
53
Thisguymoot May 10, 2026 +3
I have been thinking he’s shaping up to be a real leader on the international stage. For a long time he was a great man in a position he never wanted, but it feels like things have turned a page and I see him having a hand in much broader regional affairs.

Ultimately, I think it’s a bluff, but even as a bluff, the effects are still going to create a visual measure, to the citizens, of how much weaker of a state Russia is now because of Putin’s actions. Striking a blow to the confidence of everyday Russian citizens could be just as effective as hitting any military target. As Sun Tzu said, *“Without harmony in the state, no military expedition can be taken.”*
493
Shot-Toe-2884 May 8, 2026 +212
I don't think it can be dismissed as a bluff. Ukraine created a credible threat. If Russia ignores the threat and continues on like nothing is going to happen, that directly incentivizes Ukraine to actually disrupt the parade and it would humiliate Putin for ignoring a credible threat and putting the parade in harms way. So either Putin looks weak by cancelling/watering down the parade, or he looks weak by getting attacked on Parade Day. I know it's not this simple, but there is also nothing in the geneva convention that says Ukraine can't attack military targets during an active conflict. The attack would be perfectly legal. You don't hold parades in an active conflict zone and expect them to be safe. Obviously Ukraine won't attack the parade directly, but I wouldn't be shocked at all if they hit military targets in the city proper, and that would still ruin the parade.
212
Thunder-12345 May 8, 2026 +146
Or use the threat of attacks on the parade so Russia relocates air defences to protect it, and strike strategic targets those defences were stripped from.
146
Shot-Toe-2884 May 8, 2026 +53
Lots of options! I think yours is the most likely route. No doubt there is going to be a massive drone attack in Russia.
53
Werftflammen May 9, 2026 +5
They are already exploiting this in Tuapse, Perm and Leningrad. Don't under estimate the damage to Putin's image. I have wondered about Russian resolve, and it's about their need for a strong leader (Tsar, Party Secretary or Putin), if either looks weak, they are done for. No amount of suffering will make the russian move, but perceived weakness and Putin's toast.
5
Frustrated9876 May 8, 2026 +21
Russia can’t possibly have many spare air defenses left. Though… I suppose there isn’t much need to defend the refineries that are already on fire….
21
0x476c6f776965 May 8, 2026 +28
Russia’s defense industry output seems to be increasing though. They’re launching ridiculous amounts of drones every other week.

9
Nematrec May 8, 2026 +23
I like the confetti idea. Set off confetti bombs with yellow and blue confetti. Completely harmless for the citizens, but a clear message of "we could have if we wanted" Also attack military targets elsewhere in the city cause there's still a war going on.
23
mercenaryarrogant May 8, 2026 +3
They can celebrate with Ukrainian fireworks.
3
MrDLTE3 May 8, 2026 +5
Let's be real. China is gonna send a representative there. I dont know if Ukraine is gonna risk attacking and pulling China directly in. Especially with how shaky the US support is right now.
5
DillBagner May 8, 2026 +5
True. China might continue to support Russia if anything were to happen.
5
Dyolf_Knip May 8, 2026 +3
And also remember how much effort they put into Operation Spiderweb. If Ukraine does plan on publicly disrupting the parade, they've had months to prepare for it. I'm thinking drones smuggled in and stored on rooftops, already well within the air defense cordon.
3
xmsxms May 9, 2026 +1
Given all the defences and focus that will be shifted to the parade it would actually make sense to hit something else entirely during the parade. The seeding of fear, uncertainty and doubt is effective just by itself. Which is all this is - if Russia has any smarts they wouldn't be giving it any credibility. It would have been far more sensible for Russia to not try and enact a ceasefire during this period - it's only asking for propaganda.
1
Stennan May 8, 2026 +18
Someone should install big directional speakers on some rooftop and blast the parade with drone noise. While it is non-violent, it would be hilarious to see everyone run for cover.
18

1
mindfu May 8, 2026 +15
I don't see any reason why this would be just a bluff. Russia is already trying everything it can to beat Ukraine besides nukes - and they are failing. Putin also knows that actually bringing out nukes would trigger NATO, even without trump, to conventionally bomb Putin's bunker to powder. Putin is in a bind. His military at his parade or nearby will be attacked, in ways he cannot prevent. Or really, that he could prevent in only one way: ceasing the invasion of Ukraine.
15
TheRedHand7 May 8, 2026 +14
His biggest issue with nukes is that China won't even back that at this point. All the big players benefit from the nuclear taboo Putin would be breaking
14
mindfu May 8, 2026 +9
Yeah, China isn't sticking its neck out for anybody.
9
jpw0w May 9, 2026 +5
Not even for their own a lot of times lol
5
donkeyrocket May 9, 2026 +3
Because it's playing into Putin's extreme paranoia. Him not attending and Ukraine doing nothing makes Putin look incredibly weak. Putin attending and present during an attack shows Ukraine has strength and the upper hand. Ukraine will attack some aspect of it or at least just dispatch drones to cause havoc just as a show of force but I doubt it'll be the main event itself. It's already going to be a woefully pathetic display. Not sure if the Putin lookalikes are still a thing but that'd be pretty radical if Ukraine took out a double.
3
mindfu May 11, 2026 +1
Since the attack didn't happen, I don't think it was a bluff. But I must admit it could have been. : ) It also looks like this might have all been plastered over with a prisoner exchange that coincided with a cease fire. In which case it's reasonable for Zelensky to resist attacking that juicy target. https://www.kyivpost.com/post/75795
1
No-Quarter291 May 8, 2026 +5
russia will move air defence to moscow and ukraine attacks other military targets
5
midnightbandit- May 8, 2026 +3
It would be a great opportunity to strike elsewhere in the country when a large amount of air defence is surrounding the capital.
3
IggyStop31 May 8, 2026 +4
Ukraine attacking the parade-goers themselves would be a problem for NATO. *However,* Ukraine sending a massive swarm of drones to hit a couple military targets in the city at a time that just happens to coincide with putin's pity parade; well that's not NATO's problem.
4
Lawlcopt0r May 8, 2026 +2
It would absolutely be the smartest thing to bluff and force them to waste resources on securing the parade. Not just because it wastes resources, but because their reaction to the threat proves that they're vulnerable
2
Betaminer69 May 10, 2026 +1
Why would they want to "secure the parade"? They killed once all civilians in a movie hall to "catch" some terrorists
1
Tetracyclon May 8, 2026 +2
They drag any air defense unit available to Moscow, to protect that parade, so there will be many opportunities for other target.
2
volinaa May 8, 2026 +1
the russian population will just be “ugh the evil EU and USA made us do it.” AGAIN
1
zen111 May 9, 2026 +1
He did something similar last year, and it turned out to be a bluff. I would not be surprised if he mixed it up now.
1
MentalDisintegrat1on May 9, 2026 +1
What I would do is say I was going to bomb the parade and because of that they either cancel which makes them look weak or go though with it and that means they are going to shift a lot of security and equipment to that parade. I would then throw some decoy's there and put the real bombs and drones to other areas with critical infrastructure.
1
Excellent-Rest3240 May 8, 2026 +1
I think the drop of russias supremacy illusion is long over due. “Big strong army” but how good did the citizens really have it before this war? The country was still under a lot of sanctions. Citizens were famous for either making money through hacking programs and torrents (perhaps even with viruses). Youth were doing all kinds of crazy sounds like hanging from cranes and what not because life wasn’t worth living there. Corruption, prostitution, emigration Idk man, this war really cemented that weak reality. But it wasn’t far off of being visible before all this

1
Sad_Professional5351 May 8, 2026 +67
The Russians have relocated air defense systems from other cities to protect Moscow, so we should probably expect Ukrainian fireworks where there is no such defense. And the fact that Kremlin criminals are threatening to attack Kiev is nothing new; they do it every day. But it will be nice to see Red Square ignite anyway, if I'm wrong in my assumptions.
67
jonoave May 8, 2026 +17
Or it could be a diversion. With most defences now in Moscow., it's easier for Ukraine to target those regions. Why waste resources trying to penetrate the heavily-defended Moscow?
17
Solesky1 May 8, 2026 +17
>The Russians have relocated air defense systems from other cities to protect Moscow >But it will be nice to see Red Square ignite anyway, if I'm wrong in my assumptions. Would it not be the smarter strategy to hit everywhere else besides Moscow that currently has lessened defenses?
17
Dyolf_Knip May 8, 2026 +17
Certainly. But the media & propaganda value of being publicly seen to disrupt the parade would be worth trying to do both. It doesn't even have to be actually destructive or militarily effective. Someone else here suggested blue and yellow confetti? Just the fact that Ukraine is able to do it *at all* would send the real threat loud and clear. "We could. We *didn't*. But we could." And then, as you say, they *also* take full advantage of the defenses having been stripped elsewhere.
17
Wide-Equivalent6863 May 8, 2026 +5
And confetti is hard to defend against, could maybe fly a lot of balloons out of missile range (if this is possible, I'm not sure if it is) and drop them (I say a LOT of them because you can't aim the confetti in the wind, but that's fine, will just have to cover the whole city then)
5

3
tomtomclubthumb May 8, 2026 +3
Every time the Russians make threats I've always wondered, what are they planning to do, because aside from nukes, they can't really escalate.
3
motorcycle-manful541 May 8, 2026 +31
People don't get how big of a deal this parade is for Russia every year. It's like 4th of July Fireworks, or whatever your country's "- day" is. Basically, Putin MUST show up due to its importance or he disrespects the deaths of those that fought and died for Russia, but Ukraine is threatening to kill him, even though it's likely they won't do anything. Putin is in an impossible position and I'm happy he's terrified
31
PinkPaintedSky May 9, 2026 +2
If he truly has body doubles, they are the ones that will be attending and then if anything happens and they die, he will miraculously survive because he is their "god."

I can actually answer this after doing a review of Sally ports Short answer: no Bullet resistant glass is not blast resistant glass as they're different items as blast resistant is not made to dissipate sudden sharp impacts but flex against a pressure wave You can of course layer these together but the reality is a big enough blast doesnt need to shatter the pane it can just move the pane into the room crushing the occupant like a big encyclopedia crushing an ant

I have doubts Ukraine will attack the parade but Zelenskyy is enjoying making threats.

funderfulfellow May 9, 2026 +3
The foreign diplomats are their human shield.
3
BubbhaJebus May 9, 2026 +3
Get Russia to maximize its security around the parade, then attack elsewhere.
3
MyrddinSidhe May 8, 2026 +7
They should send a fleet of drones to drop flyers over the parade. “You were this close to dying. You’re welcome.”
7
dogwoodcat May 8, 2026 +3
Ukraine should send drones full of blue and yellow glitter, followed by waves of rainbow flags, streamers, and even more glitter.

Westerdutch May 8, 2026 +2
Unfortunately anything other than straight up violence will just get twisted by Russia into something positive to them. > drones full of blue and yellow glitter, followed by waves of rainbow flags, streamers, and even more glitter 'See, even the Ukrainian people love our parade!'

Rosebunse May 9, 2026 +1
The violence will get twisted too.

Mewhomewhy May 8, 2026 +2
Trump is going to be there isn’t he?
2
Phalharo May 9, 2026 +2
Ukraine is planning an attack on the parade. That is what he is saying.
2
Rosebunse May 9, 2026 +4
"I like you. Don't come to school tomorrow." At least they're being honest. Though I fear it might encourage certain journalists.

zasabi7 May 9, 2026 +2
Anyone know if Jill Stein is attending?
2
callmechristianblack May 9, 2026 +1
Is this a known thing about her alignment with Russia? I know very little about her.
1
zasabi7 May 9, 2026 +2
She has photos of attending dinners with Putin. Beyond that I don’t recall, but I personally hate her because she only shows up every 4 years to f*** over the democrats

DramaticWesley May 9, 2026 +2
I would stay home if I were you. Why? Ummm…looks like it might rain.
2
soggyarsonist May 9, 2026 +2
Cloudy with a chance of drones

“Some of you guys are alright, don’t go to the parade tomorrow”

filmguy36 May 9, 2026 +2
Russia has lost this war. And this was the defining moment. They had to ask Ukraine not to bomb them
2
pirate135246 May 9, 2026 +2
He’s basically saying, if we get confirmation that Putin is out in the open then all bets are off and you don’t want to be there.
2
vkry476500 May 8, 2026 +5
Can we send Trump
5
BoringRedHorse May 8, 2026 +2
Trump is already running cover for Putin as well, lying through his teeth on how Ukraine agreed to Putin's ceasefire. So now if anything happens to the parade he'll point at it and claim they broke the agreement that he himself made up.

sunnyspiders May 8, 2026 +1
Something tells me there will be fireworks.
1
Arik_De_Frasia May 8, 2026 +1
Putin gonna be using foreign officials as a human shield.
1
Jkabaseball May 8, 2026 +1
Who would actually go though? Belarus kicked Putin's guy out of office. Iran's "leader" is in coma at best. Syria's old leader fled the country. 1

China, probably, because diplomacy, which is a fancy way of saying that China is basically rubbing their hands together in glee as the rest of the world burns and they want to keep the world burning (hence diplomacy) because if all the other major powers are gone, guess who benefits? Oh, yeah. The only one left!

Ukraine probably has some trucks full of ready to deploy drones sitting nearby. FSB knows something was planned, I think we are going to see some serious escalation of this goes south... Russia cannot afford to loose their face on this occasion, so prepare for tactical nukes to be deployed or at least a barrage of ballistic missile attacks on Kiev, flattening the government buildings. Russia called for all diplomats to leave Kiev, they can't afford that the foreign embassies will be hit. Send drones with no war heads hundreds upon hundreds of them. Just get them to Moscow keep AA shooting the entire day. You didn't attack them you only violated their airspace with unarmed drones. Burn every f****** sa400 missile they got. All the warheads go to the open refineries that no longer have AA protection.

Breddit2099 May 9, 2026 +2
That would break the cease fire bud
