“We had to go to 50 radio stations and explain that it wasn’t ‘douche.’” Bruce Springsteen hated Manfred Mann’s “Blinded by the Light,” says singer Chris Thompson
The guitarist recalls the tape-machine glitch that created rock’s most infamous misheard lyric — and the awkward dinner where he asked Springsteen what he thought.

Manfred Mann is an interesting band.  The three songs I know them for (Blinded by the light, Mighty Quinn and Do Wah Diddy)are so ridiculously different that I can’t believe it’s the same group.

Aren't those all cover songs? Did they do any original material? No wonder their songs sound so different.

All covers, and arguably the Manfred Man version is the best known of each.

CharlieParkour Mar 29, 2026 +51
I know this is all personal opinion, but I think the Dylan and the Band version blows it out of the water. The joyous exuberance and funkiness makes the Manfred Mann version sound like waiting room music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0mdPdxAf9U I'd also say the Springsteen cover is watered down from the raw source, not to mention messing up the lyrics.
51
MFoy Mar 29, 2026 +25
Absolutely, Dylan's version of Quinn the Eskimo is better, I named a cat Quinn once. But Manfred Mann's version is better known. Plenty of people don't even realize it's a Dylan song.

RainbowCrane Mar 29, 2026 +17
Apropos of nothing related to the original post, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton are responsible for a huge portion of the soundtrack of the 1960s-1980s. As you said about Dylan, there’s a bunch of songs that the three of them wrote that are more famous as covers. They’re truly impressive songwriters. [This 1965 Grand Ol’ Opry performance](https://youtu.be/W1bXdXWEKaE) by Nelson shows him singing a bunch of his songs that other folks made famous.

I miss when country music wasn't just bland and boring hick pop.
9
thelingeringlead Mar 30, 2026 +9
Well you're in luck, there's a huge resurgence of carefully crafted country coming out every year. Guys like Sturgill Simpson and Tyler Childers really pushed the genre forward when it was at it's most stagnant, and now there's a ton of kick ass country musicians again. Folks you can positively say "hank would have done it this ol' way".
9
RainbowCrane Mar 30, 2026 +2
I agree. There are some great musicians and songwriters among the 15-40 year old crop of country artists
2
thelingeringlead Mar 30, 2026 +1
And more bubbling up every day as the genre gets more and more mainstream attention. One of my favorites is a cat named B.B. Palmer who's been grinding it out for the last 10 years or so. He's about to put out an album that's very much in the spirit of something like Sound and Fury but WAY more country.

LeftHatofGod Mar 30, 2026 +2
Been listening to the abigails last couple days, pretty cool band. Not much of a country listener but theyve got some good songs.
2
CoderDevo Mar 30, 2026 +2
Each song is always so heartfelt from Willie Nelson, even if he didn't write it.
2
Pool_Shark Mar 30, 2026 +1
That is THE Willie Nelson!? Wow guess I never saw him when he was younger, I always assumed he would have had long hair and a beard. And the suit is really throwing me
1
RainbowCrane Mar 30, 2026 +1
If you look at 1950s and 1960s tv in general his dress in that clip is pretty typical - network censors were pretty brutal about their standards. That’s the reason that style sort of stuck for the late night interview shows - Jack Benny and Jack Parr set the standard and Carson, Leno, etc just continued the trend. Actually if you watch modern clips of the Opry it’s still pretty conservative regarding costumes/dress compared to, say, the Grammy Awards or other musical shows. For example, Vince Gill is pretty relaxed on tour, and used to show up to Time Jumpers shows in whatever he was wearing on the golf course. For the Opry he almost always wears a suit. Partly that’s because of respect for everyone else who has been there before.

CharlieParkour Mar 29, 2026 +16
I heard it first as a Grateful Dead cover at Alpine Valley. Then there's this from the eponymous movie that came out the same year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ALdG_nhQBY Probably a good place to mention that the lyrics of Blinded by the Light were heavily influenced by Dylan.
16
thelingeringlead Mar 30, 2026 +2
I've literally never heard Manfred man's version of that song, but I've heard dozens of bands play it lol.
2
Pool_Shark Mar 30, 2026 +1
There’s no shortage of Dylan penned songs that were made famous by covers. Mark of an amazing song writer.
1
ElvisAndretti Mar 29, 2026 +1
I prefer each of the originals, especially Doo Wah Diddy
1
frogandbanjo Mar 30, 2026 +1
I mean, it's got a lot more energy, but if my stool were that loose I'd be calling a doctor.
1
CharlieParkour Mar 30, 2026 +2
Yeah, cut loose like a deuce probably has two meanings. I always thought he meant playing cards and dropping the low value ones.
2
JuliusErrrrrring Mar 30, 2026 +2
I don’t get it. Not even much of a Springsteen fan, but I like the original better than Manfres Mann’s version
2
MattC1977 Mar 29, 2026 +3
Agreed! It’s also hard to believe that the Beatles Twist And Shout is a cover. (And it’s the best version).
3
MRintheKEYS Mar 29, 2026 +37
Their version of Dylan’s Get Your Rocks Off is great too. Mannfred did a fuckton of covers but it kind of works with him because it always seems like he pushes the song off into a different direction each time.

Funnily enough Bruce used to cover a Manfred Mann original. Pretty Flamingo.

I've always felt the same about Manfred Mann. They're like the greatest cover band of all time. I think all of their hits are other people's songs. Golden Earring is like that for me. Radar Love is like a classic rock road tune, and Twilight Zone feels like 80s new wave.
53
WiiForecastChannel Mar 29, 2026 +23
I don't listen to much MM, but with Golden Earring, they are pretty interesting with how they can mold their sound to any era. Like they did beat music, psych rock, prog rock, classic hard rock, AOR, etc and never sounding dated (to the time) or not like themselves. Quality band
23
barry0181 Mar 29, 2026 +5
You just blew my mind. Not because of your post. Because as I was reading this there was a commercial with Radar Love playing. Eerie.
5
Bruichladdie Mar 29, 2026 +52
I mean, aside from Mann himself, they're not really the same groups. My dad was a fan of the Chris Thompson era of the band, their live album from Budapest in particular. Check that one out if you wanna hear more of their stuff. Chris is in great vocal form.
52
TheRealBaronOfMyr Mar 29, 2026 +21
it isn't. Do Wah Diddy and the hit version of Mighty Quinn (the Earth Band recorded it too for the Watch album) are Manfred Mann (the 60s band), Blinded was Manfred Mann's Earth Band. Manfred himself was all the two had in common.
21
BillServo86 Mar 29, 2026 +8
I am 39 years old and I have never once thought that any of those songs were by the same band. My powers of non-observation never cease to amaze me.
8
SusanShocks Mar 29, 2026 +6
Totally agree. The Hollies is another band that kept surprising me. Bus Stop, Long Cool Woman, and Carrie Anne sound like three different bands from three different decades

Wow i also did not know they did all three. Carrie Anne is so soft and chill

Andrew Hickey's podcast A History of Rock Music in 500 songs did a really interesting [episode](https://500songs.com/podcast/episode-118-do-wah-diddy-diddy-by-manfred-mann/) on Manfred Mann. Highly recommend it! Made me see them in a different light.

It is d***** to me. To me.
343
DangerousPuhson Mar 29, 2026 +165
If dude didn't want everyone to hear "d*****" and "a*** curly-whirly" in his lyrics, he probably should have sang it so it didn't sound like that. Instead he sang it like we all hear it.
165
coleman57 Mar 29, 2026 +50
Bruce clearly sings “came by in ‘er curly-whirly”. I don’t know why Mann changed Hurly-Burly to a guy, making it “in ‘is”. And anyone who knows cars knows a deuce is a 2-seater. Nobody ever accused the Beach Boys of driving a little d***** coupe, even if we didn’t know what they got.
50
grubas Mar 29, 2026 +58
I know it's deuce, it still sounds like d***** and I can't change that.
58
billyrubin7765 Mar 29, 2026 +8
I agree. I think Bruce knows he sang d***** but obviously he had to say it was deuce.
8
frogandbanjo Mar 30, 2026 +14
I think the proper argument is that people who didn't and/or don't know anything about cars *also* never accused the Beach Boys of driving a little d***** coupe, because they motherfuckin' enunciated.
14
coleman57 Mar 30, 2026 +1
And yet somehow nobody notices that Don’t Worry Baby is also just about winning a car race

15
Stylez_G_White Mar 29, 2026 +10
He is saying “d*****”. It’s one of those “don’t believe your lyin’ eyes” situations. It’s undeniable that he says d***** in the lyric
10
cashew76 Mar 29, 2026 +4
Dropped like a Douce Revved like a Douce Cut up like a Douch Sounds like potty talk anyway you go
4
Western-Arm9947 Mar 30, 2026 +1
I don’t want to lower the tone here, but cut loose like a deuce would have a very distinct & different meaning in Australia. A deuce being the proverbial ‘number two’. Thus the Aussie phrase ‘snap off a deuce’. Or ‘drop a couple of friends off at the pool’ for that matter. Whereas cut off like a d***** works. A d***** being an a**hole in Oz - ie someone you would want to cut off.
1
QB8Young Mar 29, 2026 +225
Part of the problem is that it sounds like wrapped up and not revved up leading to d***** fitting with wrapped rather than deuce properly with revved.
225
Md655321 Mar 29, 2026 +215
If you’ve ever partied at a frat house revved up like a d***** makes alot of sense

44
QB8Young Mar 29, 2026 +31
Ever heard The Beach Boys - Little Deuce Coup? It is a great word because it is specifically referencing a car. You rev an engine. 🤷

11
JinxOnU78 Mar 29, 2026
It literally just means a two seater.
0
supernovice007 Mar 29, 2026 +15
It's clearly meant to be deuce, especially when you consider the next line "another runner in the night". Even knowing that, I still hear d***** every time.
15
maxairmike05 Mar 30, 2026 +5
I’ve always heard “roller” and not “runner.” I think I prefer Vedder’s unintelligible “is this even English, or any language” half the time over the complete lack of clear enunciation in this song leading to wildly misheard but somehow clearly understood lyrics.

What about “a*** curly whirly”
155
eyeoutthere Mar 29, 2026 +61

61
XThePlaysTheThingX Mar 29, 2026 +17
And I’ve been over here for years thinking it was a reference to a stylish gay man in his equally stylish car attempting to “pick up” the narrator.  This song has so many misinterpretations to it.

17
HowdyDooder Mar 29, 2026 +26
At that point in his career, those royalties probably helped a lot. Springsteen’s career didn’t really take off until Born to Run and even then he ended up in a long battle with his then manager.
26
jonnovich Mar 29, 2026 +9
It wasn’t until “The River” and it’s tour that he started to have at least a little money in the bank. He was decently well known and highly respected in many circles, but he was still very much known as a northeastern guy with pockets of support in Cleveland, Richmond, Phoenix and a few other places. His major calling card was then, as it is now, his live show. That’s how he made his name….going out and doing his gig better than his competitors. Obviously “Born in the USA” changed the scale of his success by a number of magnitudes. But that was his seventh album in 11 years. He paid his dues.

MM's version interprétation was always weird to me. It felt more like a fever dream than a rollercoaster ride. It's good but there's no fun in it.  Bruce's version matches the content of the song. And why the hell did they shove chopsticks in there? It's kinda dumb.

25
AUniquePerspective Mar 29, 2026 +3
And part of the confusion is that Bruce wrote and sang "cut loose like a deuce" but Manfred Mann changed it to "revved up like a deuce" so Bruce can be annoyed by the changed words without it needing to be the word that people think was changed. Because Deuce didn't change. It's always referred to a 193**2** Ford.

Brilliant-Oven-3020 Mar 29, 2026 +2
I like Manfred Mann's version a lot better

Stylez_G_White Mar 29, 2026 +3
I had heard that Mann really didn’t want to record the song but the label forced him to because they wanted a radio hit. The story is that he intentionally sang “d*****” as a f***-you to the executives for making him record the song. This article obviously tells different so who knows.

I think you’re getting confused with Quiet Riot, the label wanted them to cover Cum on Feel The Noize and they hated that song/the band Slade. They decided to do it as awful as they could so the label wouldn’t release it. Then it ended up being their most popular song. Or both facts are true I’ve just never heard yours

What's amazing to me was there exactly zero number of people who listened to the song before it was officially released that went..  "Ya know, maybe you should re record that cuz it really sounds like d*****"

Once someone had the complete Manfred Mann discography on Kickass and I thought, hey, I like all the Manfred Mann I've ever heard, (Solar Fire is my favorite), but wow....it was vast and not all to my taste....
