We have been exchanging food with our neighbors for two years. Recently, the food exchange stopped and their garden has been looking neglected. We wanted to check in so we brought a cake and knocked on their door.
I asked to see if our neighbor who loves cooking and taking care of his garden is doing ok. His adult son opened the door and the man in question, looking exhausted but dressed up, took a peek behind him to see who was there. It turns out he got a job as a cook and that's why he hasn't exchanged food with us or tended to his garden recently. Glad we brought cake instead of soup!
They also invited us over for Easter, so I guess the food exchange has made a return too!
Voluntarily taking a job as a cook means he's very, very much not okay. I've seen what that job does to people and he's got to be crazy!
:-) /s jk etc.

That’s not at all how I thought this story was going to end. Whew! Thank goodness!

Honestly same.
There was a comment on on listnook post a few days ago where someone fell down the stairs or something. OP didn’t see them taking their usual morning walk or something and thought it was weird.
OP went to investigate and heard faint yelling.
I can’t remember the specifics, but I think the neighbor fell in the backyard or something like that.

That's terrifying. I'm glad that person investigated and I hope the neighbor was OK.

If I remember correctly neighbor was okay. Neighbor was old and fell. OP called paramedics and they broke down the door to get in.

Okay but what happened when they answered?? Don't leave us hanging op. Seriously though, this is really thoughtful. Most people would just be like "huh wonder why they stopped" and move on with their day. The neglected garden thing would have me worried too - that's usually a sign something's up. Hope everything's okay with them.

He looks like he's lost some weight so I was worried even after seeing him, but his adult son said he "is working again now" and that's why he has been busy. His son tends to speak for him since he isn't fluent in English. When he told his parents (his mom came to the door too) why we were there, they all shared a good laugh then the mom invited us over for Easter. Looks like they are doing OK! The dad just happens to be the only one with a green thumb in the family but something tells me he will tend to his garden again after our visit. I'm looking forward to joining them for Easter to further confirm that he's doing ok. 🙏🏻

Would you be interested in helping him? Maybe he can pass on some of his wisdom.

I would love to but I am not into gardening and I'm also currently focused on getting a promotion + earning a new data analysis certificate. All that said, I sadly do not have the time although I won't mind asking the guy who mows our lawn to mow his too.😅

it's really a nice thing to have nice neighbors, some of us have hostile neighbors and we can't do shit about it lol

Great result glad you went to check. I read a book last month, confessions of a nurse, and I noticed a trend where it was oftenthe neighbours, not family members, who had called to get a sick or injured patient to the hospital. Keep on being a great neighbour!
