Weirdly, The Harry Potter Trailer Has Almost No Fantasy Elements

Posted by WinchesterMediaUK

It's most likely due to logistics and time constraints, but it still seems like a strange choice to put pretty much no fantasy stuff in the new Harry Potter trailer. We get a couple of brief in-camera shots of Hagrid, a quick glimpse of the ghost teacher in the background, and precisely one second of Snape with his wand lit. Other than that, zilch. Obviously the trailer has done huge numbers regardless and you can push a new Harry Potter purely on the brand name, but when you're trying to sell the thing to a new generation and win over the sceptics, putting out a trailer with only one second of magic seems like a misfire. I've also seen people say the framing and editing almost has an AI feel to it, and I can sort of see where they're coming from. A lot of establishing shots and slow one-second character close-ups with little movement and no dialogue. The muted teal and orange colour palette also leaves it feeling slightly cold. The next trailer will probably be more dynamic and lean into the fantasy stuff more but it makes me wonder if the first trailer was rushed out for HBO Max's UK launch, and if the series as a whole will end up being Christmas Rushed.

Sometimes the CGI isn't done when these things are cut together.

Why are you making excuses for the marketing a company does? What they present is what they intend to present and should be evaluated as such.

Exactly, but you'd think they could have thrown together something quickly even if it was just one second of somebody firing off a spell or magically unlocking a door. Just something brief to set the tone.

When they do that people go "The effects look shit! It's going to be a disaster!"

they’re dropping trailers for the next 9 months. don’t worry when it’s ready they’ll show this.

Often it's done just like that (and being unfinished, often leaves quite a bad first impression).. and then people think it will look like that in the completed movie, and then the complaining, disappointment etc. starts.

People are hyped for it without that. Why go to the extra effort/expense? They'll get to it when it's ready.

The discourse around this show is going to be exhausting, and people are just going to nitpick every little thing to death, aren't they? Nothing in the trailer looks like AI.

I plan to avoid as much online discussion around the show as possible. I’ve started doing it for other shows/films and my enjoyment of them has gone up exponentially.

>I’ve started doing it for other shows/films and my enjoyment of them has gone up exponentially. That’s really the way to do it. Nothing will ruin your enjoyment of something more than a bunch of bitchy nerds on the internet that have nothing better to do than nitpick something to do because…reasons I guess? I don’t know why they do it to be honest. Sometimes I think a lot of people derive joy out of shitting on everyone else’s enjoyment. Pretty much every major show I’ve watched for the last couple years and have liked, enjoyed and thought was well done— I get on listnook and all the “well that was dogshit, who made this shit?” comment get upvoted to the top and every “I liked it? I don’t know what you’re on about” comment gets downvoted to hell lmao

I have a couple friends who are giant HP nerds, I am just going to get their opinion because they may nitpick it but they are too massive of fans to full out hate it just because it is HP

"AI" is just a scarlet letter(s) you can slap on whatever you don't like at this point.

Jim Crow James Potter is pretty much already cannon. It’s not gonna get better.

This is the dumbest shit. Like, I've never seen a better example of people presumably on the side of justice outing themselves as the race obsessed ones.

Literally all they have to do is cast other black classmates in the flashbacks and it's fine, if he's a d*** to every black person then yeah he's gonna look racist if he's just a d*** to snape then he's just a d*** to snape Yall gotta relax lol

I don’t believe all that noise. It’s was just immediate and doesn’t look to be lessening.

1.) It's just a teaser, not a full trailer. It's supposed to tease things, not necessarily show them. 2.) They are probably still doing CGI, they are not filming for that long.

Yes, it's not even a proper trailer, it's a teaser - something quickly cut together to give a feeling. They even used a generic boring slow trailer music

It's not expected until **Christmas 2026**. If anything, I was surprised they showed so much for a teaser trailer. All I expected was a clip or two, a voice over line, and the title reveal. Also the fantastical elements take time to do so stuff like the Hogwarts ghosts, centaurs, Gringotts Wizarding Bank with the goblins, unicorns, etc. probably won't be shown until much closer to the release date.

Yeah i Echo the sentiment that it's probably time constraints in getting CGI done in time to coincide with the HBO Max UK launch. One of those situations where a lot of people are questioning a Reboot, so if the CGI looked poor or wonky, the reception could have become quite negative.

Interesting point. Personally, if I was producing it, I'd have put a few VFX artists on it as a separate mini production. Nothing excessive like building dragons or trolls from scratch for a trailer, but a few simple shots like levitating the feather, or the chocolate frog jumping.

It’s weird how Hermione barely speaks. Also, the cast… not impressed so far, but we’ll see. I really liked their choice for Harry, though. And Ron, who feels much more like book Ron. I think the biggest issue is that darkness. Feels even gloomier than the last movies. Hate this trend. Characters in old movies just seemed to shine, and the settings were so clear and beautiful. Miss those times.

They thought the promoting the fantasy that you can watch the series without materially supporting someone who is on a crusade to unleash as much pain as possible against trans women was enough of a heavy lift.

There's literally a magical castle where magic is taught. In the first book, there are few "spectacular" elements, but the level rises in the second.

Onesharpman Mar 27, 2026 -1
The trailer doesn't show anything magical! Aside from the giant man, the magical castle, the talking hat, the old timey witch, and the guy with the wand. Aside from that, it could be any old drama!

inksmudgedhands Mar 27, 2026 +2
Only the giant man was simply really big but not magically massive, the hat didn't talk, the castle didn't show any magic, it looked like a regular castle, the old timey witch didn't show any magic. The only magic was like you said the guy with the lit up wand. That's it. Snape with his glowing wand. wow. Compare that to the [Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone trailer](https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=harry%20potter%20and%20the%20sorcerer%27s%20stone) where you see goblins, a troll and a three headed dog, Harry holding a wand that produces magic, a dining hall filled with magically floating candles, a staircase that moves about on their own, Harry using magic to make his broom go to his hand, Longbottom and Harry flying on their brooms and Hermione casting a spell. So, again, where's the actual magic? Where are the magical creatures? Where are the spells? The moving paintings and photographs?

This isn't a trailer. It's a teaser.
1
inksmudgedhands Mar 27, 2026
A teaser that doesn't show magic for a magical series.

Isiddiqui Mar 27, 2026 +1
Everyone knows it's about a magical school. The teaser was showing the characters and the school... which is what people were really interested in seeing. No one is like, oh I wonder what the magical effects look like here.

inksmudgedhands Mar 27, 2026 -1
Everyone knew that Harry Potter was based on a magical book series but they still showed magic in the movie trailer. And you can still show the characters doing magic. People do want to see how the series will handle magic. Will it be like the movies with certain handwaves or something else? What will their version of magical creatures look like? How practical will it be? How FX heavy will it be?

Isiddiqui Mar 27, 2026 +1
And I bet you the actual trailer will show some magic stuff. This is the pettiest complaint ever lol.
1
inksmudgedhands Mar 27, 2026 -1
So petty that I want to see magic in my magical series...

WinchesterMediaUK Mar 27, 2026 +1
The magical castle with nothing magical shown, the talking hat that doesn't talk, and the old timey witch who doesn't say or do anything.

Why do we think it’s trying to win over a new generation of fans so much when it’s already one of the biggest IPs in the world? I think you are looking way too much into it.
