Back in the dark ages, aka 1995-'96, I ran a small ISP for a couple of years. We overhauled our website, and one of our "innovations" was to reverse lookup the users IP, and look up the domain name we found in a small list of the other main ISPs in Norway where we were located.
We then added a link back to the homepage of the users ISP with a text along the lines of "Home to [ISP name]". I don't know why we thought that was something worth putting on our page, but we did. We also had animated GIFs on our homepage to put things in perspective
Anyway, about two days later I got a frantic call from one of the managers of one of the local ISPs that wanted to apologize profusely and assure us that they had *nothing* to do with the hacker that he assumed had added a link back to their site on our homepage.

Jeff.
Here's a piece of advice: When the site redesign goes live, and there are 2756 comments hating it, do not under any circumstance let your only response to people be "You'll get over it". That has had admins lynched in the past before.

In case you didn't know (and why would you? Unless you're also a Farker) - when Fark updated its page design (relatively minor changes IMHO), there was an outpouring of drama (reminiscent of recent issues here).
A moderator, who amusingly enough was named Jeff, got irritated, and said the infamous words: "You'll get over it".
That caused the previously-building drama to explode out of hand.
Thus the reference. :)

Is Jeff the intern you were soliciting? Is he a new full time hire? Or just a contractor? Does he qualify as the "+1 Engineer" achievement? How were you were able to hire him when Conde Nast previously would not let you hire more engineers? Will you be allowed to hire a sixth and so on right away or is it contingent upon something else, and if so, what?

Listnook blog, yesterday:
>*Also, we've hired a big guy named Vinnie to search and destroy the next person to make a "search sucks" self-post. Haha, just kidding, we can't afford to hire anyone.*

Simple, yes. But what exactly is elegant about it?
The phrase "simple and elegant" seems to be used these days to refer to a design that's simple, but the user has grown used to it. So I'm curious what about the design you find to be elegant.
10
derektherock42Jul 22, 2010
+20
I can't speak for Scarker, but I find elegance in a design that has everything you need and nothing you don't need. The comments are elegant because their layout is simple, yet way more functional than the average website comments.
The lack of [Web 2.0 vomit](http://theoatmeal.com/comics/websites_stop) is also very nice. We find elegance in it; at least I do.

[deleted]Jul 22, 2010

the design concept is good, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be improved. design doesn't just have to be about adding shiny shit. listnook's design is very inconsistent, the submit pages and whatnot don't really look like the front page except for the colour scheme. the comments/related/other discussion tabs up top are pretty ugly. just little things like that could definitely use a real designer's touch.

Everyone donated a bunch of money because they said they would hire another developer to fix the server problems, but instead they hired a designer who will probably end up using more graphical elements and make the site slower.
Well played, Listnook. Well played.
18
gd42Jul 23, 2010
+11
Since the donation I don't remember any crash, they fixed the search, bought some new servers, new functions for gold members (and non-gold members also, since you can sort the goldmembers comments/submissions too), etc.
They already have a salesperson, who is trying to sell ads.
And I don't think that they hired Jeff as a full time employee, since there isn't too much designable element on listnook (without some fundamental changes in functionality).
But there are people who always cry, no matter what. I don't get it. Things change, just get over it.

When are people going to wake up to this "we're so hip and not like the rest of the corporate world" bollocks. They asked for donations. They got donations. They're spending money on the absolute last thing the site needs right now. It doesn't matter how "nice" someone is, whether they use circle-jerk pleasing Portal references in the press releases, or even tattoo their announcements across the ass of Zooey f****** Deschanel.
There are two fundamental problems with listnook:
* It fucks up royally, and increasingly regularly when under heavy load **(engineering)**
* They can't generate enough revenue through advertising to pay its way **(sales)**
So what do they do? Hire a **designer** and think it's going to fly because they make some lame joke about him designing his own avatar. Design is about the only thing that the "community" is generally happy with right now and doesn't need changing. People like the simple, minimalist look and don't want another javascript abomination like Digg.
It would be fine if they were killing their own business, but now that they've suckered 9,000 people into donating money (or whatever the current figure is) I'd expect a bit more recognition of where that money needs to be spent. We've been told they can't hire anyone new and need donations, and suddenly after donations flood in, here's a new hire. So one can only conclude that it's the donation money they're using for this.
It's this kind of nonsense that would make me never donate to this company.

You're forgetting that old developers do not leave, so while Jeff is working on design they can work on other stuff. It is perfectly reasonable to give contractor least important parts so the core team can focus on core parts.

You did not donate (at least I see nothing in your trophy case), but you're bitching about it. That's kinda pathetic.

Just because he didn't donate does not mean his opinions are invalid. That's exactly what we've been trying to avoid with this whole listnook gold thing.

I feel like a curmudgeon for saying it, but just wondering if this is what our donations really paid for.
Not saying that it's bad, as the admins clearly were overworked. Just wondering.

In France, pd means gay ...

bertrancitoJul 22, 2010

Gay but in an offensive way. I think the correct translation should be "fag".

"faggot" seems a better translation since it's pretty pejorative...

how is that derived?

From pédéraste/Pederasty in english (greek origin related) then pédé, then pd. I read in wikipedia that pederasty is an older with a teenager or a young boy. But in France we say pd for gay not for gay+pedophile.

>we'll see what we can do about providing options for those of you who prefer it ugly.
But but but, only dumb digg users think Listnook is ugly.
I personally think it's the best designed site on the web. Minimal design = not a bad thing. In a site dedicated to text comments, it makes sense that the space be optimized to show the most text on a page.

You can afford to bring someone on after getting a bunch of postcards and just two days of Listnook Gold being available as a subscription? *Now* something's not right here.

They said over 9000 people subscribed. I think that may be a meme reference but it was at least the number of people subscribed to the lounge (about 4,200 last time I looked).
So if they gave an average of $10 that is $42,000. That is enough to at least get started. granted they have to make that revenue flow become ongoing but they showed that they can raise money which is, i think, what the overlords demanded before they would authorize another line.

>instead of having to make the sketches in Photoshop, and then convert them to CSS / HTML / Javascript, he skips that whole first step. He starts with CSS / HTML / Javascript, and he ends with it. It's like having a manual transmission on your website.
As a front end web dev, I think this is the best way to design a website.

>Jeff does most of his design / layout / testing in **live** CSS, as opposed to making templates and designs in Photoshop.
That's the only way to do it. Photoshop doesn't work well for dynamic layouts. Way to go Jeff.
On a side note, I'd be nice to see the whole layout a little *tighter*. Less margins more padding.
But hey, you're the pro. I'll let you handle it.
