West Bengal’s verdict could reshape not just the state’s politics, but the future trajectory of Modi’s BJP.

and just today the probable CM's PA was probably shot dead by the previous ruling party workers. That state is wild west of India in terms of lawlessness

Bengal is politically lawless but it's much better at law and order than UP and Bihar

Lmao what? How many people have been killed in post-poll violance in UP/Bihar in the last three election? Bengal is like Gaza in terms of government

It’s West Bengal specific. culture of extreme political violence because of long term control of the far left. The rest of India doesn’t have election season murders.

Mate as an Indian, up and Bihar already have had an interesting history with crime in politics and elections

Yes, let's blame the English for leaving Bengal the richest and most industrialized state with the richest and most industrialized and developed city as its capital instead of the absolute political mismanagement of the communists that bankrupted the State, followed by the TMC, both parties which literally had people brought over from East Pakistan / Bangladesh to influence elections, and actually threatening entire minority groups in the state into staying at home and casting votes under their names. Heck, after the last elections, Mamta lost, forced an elected member of her party into resigning, getting elected from that location to maintain her grip on power, and followed up the victory with a literal party ordained o*** of massacre and gangrapes of entire villages she thought had voted for the BJP. Have people forgotten Sandeshkali where the state police under the TMC turned a blind eye to the TMC running a gang r*** organisation, refusing to so much as file an FIR. Bengal and Kolkata have no one but themselves to blame for their poverty and decline. Salem prospered, Chennai got richer, Mumbai got obscenely wealthy, Pune is getting developed, Baroda rose, Ahmedabad rose, Ludhiana is prospering despite being on the frontlines of a militarily active border. Srinagar is recovering from the lost decades of 1980-2000, even absolute shitholes like Mathura, Lucknow are on the march of progress. Aizawl is slowly getting industries in, so is Manipur, and even the worst off of Naxal controlled territories are slowly crawling back from the morass of Maoist depravity. Kolkata has been in visible decline and every year brings forth a new exodus of businessmen and industrialists, and now, even the farmers in rice paddies have been up and packing and filling trains headed to the Deccan. The English, for all the psychopathic masscres and famines, left in 1947, left the Republic in 1950. It is 76 years since the day the Republic came into existence. Bengal and Bengalis have agency.

Wow a combo of colonial apologist and a fascist hindu nationalist. Who could have guessed those two can fuse together? Oh! Only the founders of the RSS who copied Italian Nazi manifestos.

This man is a psychopath and India, like other failing democracies, will pay the price for decades.

I mean I am not a fan of Modi. But WB under TMC was straight up a mafia state. Hell the previous CM is atm trying to pull a Trump in an effort to keep power. I mean if compare Modi vs Mamta Banerjee, model is the lesser of the evils. Other parties i will disagree though.

I think people overrate how much Indians are in love with the BJP. If India had even a decently capable opposition, he would be out of the office by now. Unfortunately, India got stuck with Rahul Gandhi and his circus

Failed democracy is what led India here in the first place. All the options are shit. The MPs that make up the current government were mostly part of other parties previously. The moment someone wins they all change sides, this happens in every state too. It's useless to even discuss democracy in India.

Why do you believe that ? He's been a generally stable centrist his whole time in power. Elections are fair . Economic growth is stable. Urbanization and infrastructure development is on track. Compared to the likes of Trump, Boris and populist crazies in stable democracies, Modi is about as even tempered as they come. His overwhelming popularity has to do with the opposition being so incompetent that people would vote for a scarecrow in the field before they vote for him. Imagine if the Democratic candidate for every year from 2010-2025 was Kamala Harris. And she lost every year, and again she remained the only candidate on offer. That's the Congress (primary opposition) in India.

And how do Muslim citizens feel about the BJP and Modi?
-5
Screye 2 days ago +16
No worse than any other group when an opposition party comes to power in a democracy. No politician is loved universally. Sunni Muslims don't like him, but their life isn't meaningfully changing with him in power. A majority of Shias and Ahmedias vote for him. Generally speaking, stable economic development is more important to poor people of all denominations. Policies have been even handed without special bias towards or against hindus.

The BJP and Modi objectively suck for Muslim citizens. The prior ruling parties courted the Muslim minority and providing them religious-based concessions in land management, the legal code, affirmative action, etc. A secular state should have similar rules for all of its citizens not based on religion. Add the checkered history of Islam on the Indian subcontinent, the BJP attacks of minority appeasement and pandering from the Left resonates nationwide. Barring a massive BJP screw-up much worse than demonetization and COVID, I don't see a path for India's opposition parties to become relevant again until they can abandon the status quo. Yet, instead they're doubling down - I get it though since it's hard to push your core constituencies to abandon concessions they were given for decades, but the math does not work out to win elections. I don't think Indians love the BJP as much as there's no alternative option that isn't following the old status quo in policies. It frankly will involve parties on the Left having tough conversations with the Muslim community on what is viable / is not viable. But until that changes, the BJP is going to keep winning by default with the only question the margin.
