What are people's thoughts on Monarch?

Posted by tylerthe-theatre

Just curious on what people think, I know its got an audience but I dont ever really anyone talking about it, I think its mixed kaiju, Godzilla and Apple TV sci fi fans together but I wonder if everyone's on the same page. My thoughts? Its fine, pretty enjoyable and I'm there for it every week, its more than just a monster or the week thing which is what it kinda was in parts of S1. Pretty good CGI, passable acting but its not winning awards anytime soon, but yeah for what it is, its alright. Love seeing Godzilla and Kong here and there, but not in every episode (godzilla has barely been in s2). I do wonder where the ocer arching story is going because it is repeating plot beats - find a titan, track it, stop it. Cate has a connection to titans somehow, I want something different from S3. Also I do love seeing Anna Sawai in anything, and the Kurt/Watts Russel combo is fun.

Monarch should have been about how this secret government wing is saving the world or slowly ruining it with its obsession with controlling these kaijus. Instead, it's a family drama about people who all hate each other, and we are supposed to care because...? Shaw (past & future) is carrying this show hard because he is the only likable person here. Also, while I understand the kaijus aren't the main characters, the way the show presents them feels underwhelming. Putting King Kong on the poster just for the guy to show for like 3 mins max this season feels like a bait & switch move.

The family drama based around this groups inability to talk to each other really drags down what could otherwise be an interesting show.

Awful children to adults in c*** circumstances making c*** choices. Hard to care about the childrens plight when they're such self absorbed assholes

Apple has some absolute bangers, but when they stumble, it's usually due to weak dialogue and shallow characterizations. Invasion, Monarch, The Last Frontier, etc... all packed with good actors and high production quality, and all let down by the scripts. A lot of the family drama in Monarch is the characters repeating their issues. They don't sound like intelligent, well-educated adults because the writers skip introspection in favor of exposition.

Why make a good show when you can make an average one with more broad appeal

Couldn’t agree more about the two Russells carrying the show. Honorable mention to Keiko and Tim. Every other character is suffering from the lacklustre writing.

Wife and I tried to watch season 1 a couple of months ago and just didn't care about the humans enough to keep watching. The conversations the main character had with her mom were so awful. She'd call her mom, be extremely vague about everything, and then say she didn't have time to talk then hang up. Repeat every episode, with a kaiju showing up once and a while. We stopped watching it and switched to Ted Lasso instead and ended up loving that show.

My wife and I watched all but the last two episodes or so of season one. We didn't give up on it because it was awful. We stopped watching it because we forgot about it. That's how memorable the show was, I guess. We didn't even realize we didn't finish it until the new season dropped.

Tim? Isnt too bad either. The main three, brother sister ex gf are just annoying. Like you said who cares. Ohh yeah I liked the guy the killed off in the plane in Alaska too. For all 10 min he was around.

It's the typical excuse of "the humans were the monsters all along" but it is indeed lackluster. Not as bad as that other Apple TV show *Invasion* but it ain't a lot. Each family member has issues with other family members and even friend May has her issues with the group. It also seems that inter-family problems like Wyatt going it alone is filler to pad episodes. If you really trim it down you only have 2-3 episodes of content.

lol in the monster verse sub they love the family drama part of the show. I watch it every Friday but it’s not as good as season 1. The parts that take place in the past are the best parts of the show.

If I had to guess, this is another case of a writer having a script they want but cant get greenlit but then when a big IP/franchise needs a script they use this as an in for their mediocre script. Example: Halo with the space pirate and Kwan Ha subplot as a clear example of this.

I watched season 1 and felt the same. But then I got 2 episodes into the new season and suddenly realised that A) I couldn’t remember hardly anything that happened in the first season, and B) I really don’t care what happened haha. Had to give up, just no interest in the plot even after watching a season recap.

Definitely a guilty pleasure. I “gave up” 3 episodes ago. It lasted one day before I was like alright let’s see what these fools are up to this week.

I really enjoyed the first season, mostly for the storyline in the past. Especially when the titan stuff is happening, past or present, it's a blast. But, they really don't seem to know what to do with the three younger characters. Anna Sawai is the lead, but for some reason they've written the character as the most useless of the whole cast. In second season, she is actively doing stupid things that get people killed. I'm not full caught up on the second season, but I'm starting to lose interest.

I watch for 2 reasons. 1. Godzilla 2. Anna Sawai Other than that, the editing is awful. Show constantly builds drama/tension and cuts away within minutes to sub-plot. It's a tough watch. but Anna Sawai makes it worth the watch.

She's great, but if had only seen her in this show I would never know it, the kids are just baaaad. They suck so much in season 1 that I haven't bothered starting season 2.

Speaking of editing, there was a scene in S1 where the camera dollys into a closeup on Kurt Russell's face. As soon as the camera started setting the shot up I groaned to my friend "Oh boy, here comes the disolve!" Sure enough, the scene transition was a disolve from Kurts face to Wyatts face. You just know that they really patted themselves on the back for that. That said, I really do enjoy the show even as ridiculous as it is. Mostly because my boy Ders from Workaholics is stretching his drama chops. EDIT: [Found the shot.](https://youtube.com/shorts/VHdwwLOWsM8)

My favorite thing is how instantly the discourse around her in Monarch (which was extremely negative) changed as soon as Shogun came out.

THEbaddestOFtheASSES 3 days ago +5
As an actress, it was never about her to begin with. It was always about the bad writing.
5

Yeah, absolutely. It's just interesting how instantly the discourse changed. It's a testament to her acting ability, that practically overnight it went from "she's awful" to "terrible writing".

Hahahaha same! The family drama killed the vibes for me. Wondering if I should skip S1 and go straight to S2? Heard it’s better.

I think it’s boring and the effects budget went down from last year. That said the story is more cohesive than most of the movies.

AhrimTheBelighted 3 days ago +5
It's backgrounds noise for me, every episode usually has a solid 5 total minutes where I actually pay attention. It could have been WAY better and cooler, but then made it dumb and family and c***.

Wasted potential. I like the idea of a series based on the POV of Monarch, but the human drama just drags it down. It's hard to give a shit about everyone, when almost everyone has committed some infidelity in one form or the other. Also the amateurish directing is doing no one any favors, especially comparing Takehiro and Anne in this show to them in Shogun.

That family has to be the messiest 3 generations I can think of, lol. All 3 generations, All 3 cheating on others.
2
psychedelic_tech 3 days ago +1
> the human drama just drags it down it was always a subplot of the godzilla movies but i agree this is really bringing it down.

CancelThis2077 3 days ago +5
Shin Godzilla and Godzilla: Minus One shows you can make the human element as compelling as the kaiju carnage. So it isn't impossible to make the non-Godzilla parts compelling.
5

Minus one was an amazing war movie that happened to have Godzilla in it.
3
I_NEED_YOUR_MONEY 3 days ago +3
it needs some focus. there's like three different TV shows in there, that individually could all be decent. but being mashed together into one show isn't helping any of them.

I feel like I could write a thesis on the show. I find it so fascinating. It has amazing production quality and sound. The acting ranges from competent to great. And yet, every episode feels like a complete train wreck. It's like each script is written by a different person who didn't even consult what the person last week wrote. I keep watching it because I like kaiju and Anna Sawai.

I quite enjoyed the first season. Sure the writing was a bit lackluster and I wouldn't necessarily depict it as high art. But it was a fun adventure nonetheless. Haven't had a chance to lock in on season 2 yet, but expect more or less the same.

MattTreck 2 days ago +2
I enjoy it but the second half of season 2 and the writing choices for the kids are driving me crazy. I will continue watching it but I do think it’s stumbling pretty hard right now.

We keep slowly picking at it, but this is basically my sentiment. Season 1 was enjoyable to the point that I'd recommend it as a fun popcorn movie type show. Season 2 feels like everyone is getting the script moments before being asked to act it. Lots and lots of stiff reads on lines too, which I can't even fault the actors for the the dialogue is pretty bad in a lot of scenes. Which, hey, it's a Gozilla TV show I shouldn't expect Shakespear right? But the first season didn't have this problem so that feels like a hollow excuse.

The Russell’s were the only reason to keep watching it, I got to the second episode in season 2 and not even Wyatt Russell could save the show, so I dropped it.

I really enjoy it. Really like the cast and the original monsters are good. I'll admit I liked the period story more - kind of wish that that was what the show was (that trio going on adventures) and season 2 is a bit worse than season 1. But, overall, I'm having a good time. Overall, I think the characters and story are better than most of the Monsterverse movies (except maybe Skull Island). I wonder if that's thanks to the involvement of Matt Fraction, really like him as a comic writer. On the Monsterverse and Godzilla sublistnooks, there's a lot of complaints about the lack of monsters and lack of effects scenes. Honestly, there's plenty and it's about what I'd expect for a TV show. Those scenes are there when they serve the story but, otherwise, it's really focused on the character stories. Godzilla fans have a reputation for not watching the movies, just skipping to the monster battles etc. With the weird reaction to this show, those fans are definitely not beating those allegations any time soon.

I get that all the Godzilla movies had this human drama subplot but this one is getting to be a bit much. I'll keep watching though! [I'm waiting for something like this to happen with Cate and Titan X](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34ClddoGLJ4)

It's okay. I started watching S1 right before S2 started so continued out of inertia. Probably won't be back if there's a season 3. The best part of the show is the stuff in the past. The only modern characters I care about are Shaw and Tim. It seems to meander a lot, with too much current family drama and not enough of everything else.

A lot of potential, fun lore, I enjoy the Russell’s in the show, the cgi is top tier. But holy moly the rest is hard to get through. The character dynamics don’t seem to track from scene to scene, they don’t react realistically to anything that happens to them, and the globe traversal gives late-stage Game of Thrones a run for its money. The 1950s storyline feels like it’s done by a completely different team.

I've been watching since the start and S2 is starting to get to me. The most recent episode particularly, after a very well known Australian character actor showed up as the American Secretary of Defense with one of the worst American accents I've heard in a long time. My horror is probably exacerbated by the fact only a few days prior I'd finished seeing the same actor in a goldfields-ish era Australian filmed series with a better (but still ropey) English accent. Agree that the Russell boys are the best thing about the show. Really liking how that storyline is panning out. I just feel Keiko is holding something back. Probably the segue into S3.

I'll buck the trend. Me and a buddy really like the show. The characters are interesting and the timelines in the first season are both interesting. I like the approach to it from the scientific pov instead of the saving the world military thing of the movies. The second season has been fun other than one part that really had us scratching our heads. The monsters look great for tv as well. Love the settings and lore. I will say it's better binged than week to week because there are slower episodes but they feel better paced when you're not waiting a whole week for the next one. It's not the best written show always but I enjoy it and the cast is really good
