In WW2, Allied prisoners in Japan were experimented on to see how much they could physically endure before dying.
People were tied up, given drugs to keep them awake, and dissected slowly. They were split open and their organs were slowly damaged and slowly removed while their vitals were being monitored. There were TONS of people who went through this to get a thorough analysis.

Everything you read on Unit 731 is almost worse than the next. 200,000-300,000 dead from the experiments and America gave them immunity after the war in exchange for the research with the scientists only serving 7 years in most cases.

The movie was just released about it, I went to see it and thought to myself "This is a bit overdramatised, no way it was like this, probably propaganda." ... nope, if anything they toned it down for the movie.
It was also covered up at great expense and length, almost successfully, with most of the documents burned that relate to it.

Imperial Japan probably had the most depraved military in history. The brutality and prevalence of mass r*** and torture was just insane. Nazi Germany was mostly "just" systematically massacring civilians by the millions, but Japan seemed hellbent on inflicting as much suffering and degradation as possible while they did so.

Getting trapped in an industrial oven. The podcast Swindled has an episode on this where a worker was locked into the oven in a tuna factory. The second part of the episode tells the story of two workers who were sent into a bakery’s industrial oven to fix it but it hadn’t been shut down long enough. They were on a slow moving conveyor belt and couldn’t back out of it.
The other death I can think of is the guy who dove into a geyser in Yellowstone in the late 70s/early 80s to save his friend’s dog (there’s a whole book devoted to deaths in Yellowstone National Park). Pretty much, in Yellowstone, you stay on the board walk. Your hat blows off…leave it, it’s gone.

I used to work in an industrial oven room. The tuna factory story was told to all newcomers. It was an intense fear I had, of getting locked in one of the ovens, even though I knew all the safety features of each one, and the person who loads the oven is the person to close it up - can't close it from inside.

A girl in my city got cooked to death in a walk-in oven at a local Walmart bakery last year. She was a newcomer to Canada and her mother was working there as well and she couldn't find her daughter and was running around looking for her and found her burnt to a crisp in the oven.
They recently concluded the investigation and it was basically "we don't really know what happened." it was so sad and they closed the Walmart for a while, which was difficult for a lot of lower income people in the neighborhood. They gutted the place and renovated before reopening. So devastating for her family and co workers :(

radiation poisoning has to be up there - your body basically falls apart while you're still conscious and it can take weeks
the Chernobyl firefighters who didn't know what they were walking into... their skin literally sloughed off and they were vomiting blood for days before finally dying. absolutely horrific way to go

But I don’t know if anyone has ever drowned in molasses before, but quicksand is just largely misunderstood due to movie magic and tall tales. It’s actually dry sand pits that are far more dangerous if there is a void collapse. But I don’t think the death would be very prolonged. Probably the same as drowning in water, I would think.

Didnt know about that. I’m guessing dying by molasses has to be exceedingly rare throughout history. There’s only so many years where it would even be a realistic possibility. Probably throughout the 1800s, etc.
However according to that article, the molasses flowed more like a wave, traveling 35 mph. So I doubt that they were left to ponder their situation very long, as was suggested. Might have actually been a fairly quick death by that account.

Been an icu nurse for 15 years and I have seen a lot of people die in a lot of different ways but two really stand out.
1. Burned badly but not killed immediately. Some get better but the ones that don’t are heartbreaking. Basically they slowly succumb to their injury’s over a month or so. Brutal. Everything hurts, toileting and hygiene are a nightmare and dressing changes are difficult and can take up to an hour.
2. Enterocutaneous fistula. Something, usually a surgical complication or traumatic injury, causes a tunnel between your intestines and your skin. Some aren’t bad, basically becomes an ostomy. You can slap a bag on it and live a fairly normal life.
If they are bad it’s awful. People basically rot from the inside out over months. To top it off, they can’t eat or drink anything the whole time so they get put on iv nutrition. Just awful.
Those are my top two.

I burned my hand badly in an accident all my skin and nails sloughed off. The paramedic gave me two ketamine tablets and it wasn't until my fourth dose of fentanyl the pain went away. I've been stabbed before and if I ranked being burned as a 10/10 being stabbed was 5/10. Received several skin grafts and while I was in the hospital I was taking 2 oxycodone tablets (not sure what mg) every 3 hours to make the pain bearable. It reinforced my one fear in life of being burned alive.
Edit: this fear came from being a child and my dad was watching the last of the mohicans and I saw the end scene where that guy got burned alive at the stake.

She thought that he was romantically attracted to her. Due to the fact that he was always doing nice things for her. One day he broke it to her hard and fast in front of other providers. On her next appointment to that mental health clinic she walked in with a liter sized Aquafina bottle of water filled with gasoline. She poured it all over herself in front of him and lit a match. That was it.

I hear you. I don’t know if I’d ever go back to that profession if I were him. It was so strange, too. She told me that in addition to the male therapist, there were 3 other providers there at that time. When she lit the match and went up in flames, everyone but the secretary froze. She said for about 30 seconds everyone froze. Then the secretary took the 5 gallon Poland springs water container off the water dispenser and poured it on her. I wonder if I’d freeze like the others? Unfortunately the water didn’t do too much. Thankfully the fire department was only a few blocks up the street. She was medflighted into the major academic burn unit by her grandmother who was a flight nurse at the time. Definitely the worst attempt I’ve ever heard about.

The man in our case was intellectually disabled and was too scared to get his contracture release surgeries because he thought it would be like the grafts all over again. I hope his family has helped convince him to do them in the last year.

With that extent of burn coverage the skin grafts would be from an allograft, not an autograft. In other words from donated human tissue from a recently deceased human.

True. The man in our case had burns over 65% of his body. I guess i had just never thought about skin grafts and how they worked. Learning the mechanics was fascinating and devastating

Being denied a blood transfusion because their parents were Jehovah's Witnesses. So many people have died needlessly because of that.
They just changed their unchangeable policy that it was always a conscience matter to store your own blood for yse later, which wasn't. People got booted out, lost their family, lost their job, and lost their community after taking a life saving blood transfusion.
It was never a conscience matter.
Hundreds of thousands of lives lost and they lie and claim it we always a conscience matter to store your own, which doesn't make any sense because it has a shelf life. Nobody can keep their own on hand for emergency without needing to resupply it.
And what if you're elsewhere and can't acess your own blood? Die?
They make zero sense. That's agerrible way to die. So many children died because of the Jehovah's Witnesses denying them.a life saving blood transfusion.

In railroading there's a horrific way to go called "getting coupled up". Basically the couplers lock together through you, which means at about your midsection but due to the pressure, you don't bleed out. You have enough time to sit there, fused between two train couplers while they bring your family down to say goodbye because once they pull them apart, so do you.

Police went to serve a warrant at a house and the suspect successfully hid from police as they searched the house. The man decided to hide by crawling inside of the chest-freezer in his basement but the door latched and he was trapped inside. I have heard that freezing to death isn't the worst way to go but unfortunately for him, the freezer was not plugged in so he was either trapped in there until he either suffocated or starved/dehydrated to death.

If I had to choose a manner of death that wasn’t via crushed pelvis and/or snu-snu, it would absolutely be a pressure vessel rupture.
Whether compression or decompression, death is about as instantaneous as it gets.

Fun fact: a lot of the parts that were found from the inside were charred. Not because of fire, but as it imploded the air inside was compressed, and as gasses compress, they heat up. The air was compressed so much that it got so hot, it flash charred those parts.

Yeah, just a fallen cloud of pink mist for the most part. A lot of the moisture that composes the human body was dissipated by the time they took the photos, so what was left was basically the equivalent of partially dehydrated body, run through a pacojet and then fired through a high-pressure fine mesh hose. Not pretty, but at least it was quick.

The Darwin Awards are full of those stories, such as the man who blew up his own jaw. In December 2009, a 25-year-old chemistry student named Vladimir Likhonos died in Konotop, Ukraine, after mistakenly coating his chewing gum in a highly explosive powder rather than citric acid.
He liked to chew his gum for a long time while studying, and when it lost flavour he’d just dip it in a dish of citric acid powder and keep chewing. Unfortunately he confused a dish of an explosive chemical powder for his citric acid and the explosive substance reacted instantly with his saliva, detonating immediately. The explosion blew off his jaw and the lower portion of his face and killed him instantly, according to local police and reports.

Oh I think I remember this one of the way was a guy who jumped off a cliff and impacted the water so hard at a specific angle he basically sent a air rocket up his own butt and it killed him ? And there was the women who used a freshly peel carrot for some self live and the carrot made tiny supwr fine cut that allowed air to get into her blood stream and when it hit her heart it killed her.
I always doubt how true they were, some of them seems a bit farfetched but those two stuck out to me and I always remembered em lol.

These definitely aren't as painful or gruesome and thus might be seen as honorable mentions compared to other things people have said on here, but there are two illnesses that I would hate to die from most and wouldn't wish on my worst enemies: Fatal Insomnia and ALS. The first slowly renders someone physically unable to fall into deep sleep and it often takes months to die from. ALS slowly and progressively robs you of your ability to control your muscles and it can sometimes take YEARS to die from.
The first of these is insanely rare and is usually confined to families and ALS isn't as common as other killers like Cancer or Heart Disease, but I'd rather get one of the latter two any day. I don't support physician assisted suicide most of the time but I honestly think it should be an option for people once these two diseases become unmanageable.
