What are the great forgotten comedies?

Posted by Jerome_Eugene_Morrow

I’ve been fighting depression lately, and my go to for years has been to throw on a comedy movie and let myself laugh. The problem is that I’ve reached a point where I’m starting to worry I’ve seen every funny movie worth seeing. Can you help me find little known gems that have big laughs to help me keep running from my sadness? It’s fine if it’s a parody or a farce or an action movie, as long as there are as many laughs a minute as possible. EDIT: Thanks to everybody. Even being reminded of the recommendations I’ve already seen is brightening my day.

I don't know if I'd consider it forgotten but Black Dynamite is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.

Freakjob_003 Apr 2, 2026 +49
"To prevent him from hurting himself. And others." "May I go to the bathroom?...Thank you." Ian McDermott delivering the line, "Welcome to Hell," was such a prescient call forward to his future roles. And the ending was so perfect. "C'mon everybody, the ice is melting!" EDIT: my answer to the thread is **Death Becomes Her**. Meryll Streep, Bruce Willis, and Goldie Hawn in a delightful dark comedy. Also, I know it's a cult classic, but it's my favorite movie of all time, so I have to mention Clue.

Drop Dead Gorgeous is the most underrated comedy that exists. The anorexic beauty pageant w***** being wheeled around the stage in a wheelchair with an IV by a nurse while she lipsyncs "Dont cry out loud" is easily the funniest scene in history.

Walk Hard might be the best answer here. It is stupidly hilarious and has some of the most quotable lines in a comedy movie. The way John C. Riley delivers his line after Elvis talks to him makes me f****** wheeze every time.

Harriet. Harry-ette. Hard-hearted harbinger of haggis. Beautiful, bemuse-ed, bellicose butcher. Un-trust... ing. Un-know... ing. Un-love... ed? "He wants you back," he screamed into the night air like a fireman going to a window that has no fire... except the passion of his heart. I am lonely. It's really hard. This poem... sucks.

Now this is something the other tour guides won't tell you. In this particular cell-block, Machine Gun Kelly had what we call in the prison system, a "b****". And one night in a jealous rage Kelly took a make-shift knife or "shiv", and cut out the b****'s eyes. And as if this wasn't enough retribution for Kelly, the next day he and four other inmates took turns pissing into the b****'s ocular cavities.

Damn you this is what I came to say lol But OP I second this. Mike Myers at his best as a slam poet who falls in love with someone who may or may not be an axe murderer. The “HEAD. PAPER. NAOW!” speech is repeated often in my house!

Loaded Weapon 1. A Lethal Weapon spoof movie that's seriously underrated. It's got Samuel L Jackson, Emilio Estevez, William Shatner, and Tim Curry. The back half isn't quite as strong but the first half of the movie is jam pavked with jokes. Special mention to Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman

Cybot5000 Apr 1, 2026 +51

The Jerk is the funniest movie ever made and not mentioned enough. Macruber is a perfect comedy. Martin Short’s Clifford I never see mentioned and is brilliant.

Clifford is so bonkers. Peak Martin Short and Charles Grodin though.

The Wrong Guy (1997) - a completely forgotten broad comedy starring Dave Foley and Jennifer Tilly. Way too many great gags to be so obscure.

Is Kentucky Fried Movie well known? Absolutely outrageously funny throughout (same creators as Airplane!) Also, again, sorry if this is well known, but “Everything you ever wanted to know about sex but were afraid to ask” is way less racy than it sounds and genuinely hilarious

Hamlet 2 and Ideal Home.  Both by Andrew Fleming(and star Steve Coogan) and both are amazing.

Nothing to Lose. Weird buddy-cop (sort of) heist (sort of) revenge (sort of) comedy. It has endured as one of my favorite comedies.
