Hey! I’m a huge doc watcher and I’m always looking for new ones, no matter how niche!
Some of my favorite documentaries have a similar kind of feel to them. I love history, crime, and films that truly just… document. I love archival footage, found footage, home movies, that vibe. I enjoy when people are filmed or interviewed more candidly, where you can piece things together and come up with your own ideas despite how it’s all edited together.
Here are some that come to mind:
\-Deceived (1979)
\-The Atomic Cafe (1982)
\-Streetwise (1984)
\-Hookers on Davie (1984)
\-Paris is burning (1990)
\-There’s something wrong with aunt Diane (2011)
\-Capturing the Friedmans (2003)
\-LA 92 (2017)
\-Crip Camp (2020)
\-Daughters (2024)
Any suggestions are appreciated 💗🫶🏼
My favorites are:
- Kedi (2016)
- Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (2023)
- The Deepest Breath (2023)
- Will & Harper (2024)
- For Sama (2019)
- Blackfish (2013)
- Boys State (2020)
But documentaries that I liked that fit YOUR taste are:
- Assassins (2020)
- Collective (2019)
- Gladbeck: The Hostage Crisis (2022)
- Rewind (2019)
- Into the Deep (2020)

Gimme Shelter (1970) is probably the best music documentary I’ve ever seen. It follows the Rolling Stones on their legendary tour of America in ‘69, eventually leading up to the disastrous Altamont Free Concert.
I can’t think of another documentary that shows one of the best bands ever at their peak playing and making some of their best songs that also features a murder caught on tape.
Another great Stones doc is Cocksucker Blues (1972). That one follows the band and their entourage on their tour in support of Exile on Main Street. It’s one of the most insane, debauched things I’ve ever seen, to the point that the Stones have blocked its release. You can find it on YouTube pretty easily though.
Just as an example of the hedonism on display, the movie shows Mick Jagger snorting coke backstage at a show, a groupie injecting heroin in a hotel room, and Keith Richards and Bobby Keys tossing a television out of their hotel room into a pool. Got some great live performances too of course.

My all-time favorite is the documentary on The Donner Party by PBS's American Experience series.
It may not be particularly impactful, but it was extremely well made.
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, and Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis (Frontline) are both entertaining.

A Certain Kind Of Death (2003) - It documents what happens to those that die without a next of kin. Very interesting to see what happens to those without someone near them in life to mourn them.

All links are direct to official, legal, YouTube-hosted versions that are free in most areas. Sorry if it's not in yours. In all cases, I believe these are very worth your time to source and watch :)
[An Honest Liar](https://youtu.be/Q3b-q9W0AJw) (2014) - The life and works of The Amazing James Randi.
[Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story](https://youtu.be/fkoNeESBH94) (2024) - After moving to a remote Shetland Island, Molly washes up on Billy's jetty in desperate need of help. What becomes is the most endearing, beautiful friendship ever. This is the best 'slow tv' I've ever seen.
[Kedi](https://youtu.be/PpG0z-npFIY) (2017) - Gorgeous documentary about the lives of the cats of Istanbul's streets
