What are your most edge of the seat thrillers?

Posted by MortLightstone

Horror movies never scare me. It's like their tricks don't work on me However, suspense really gets to me. When I don't know what could happen to our lead characters, I get nervous and a feeling of dread comes over me Do you ever get that edge of your seat feeling? What were some movies that took you there?

Awesome movie. First time back then I had no idea what I was getting into. I watched it again this past year and was equally entertained.

This movie is perfect for watching twice. First time is edge of your seat viewing. Second time is brilliant if you’re watching it with someone who’s watching it for the first time!

We went in blind, based entirely on “Se7en was so good, that Guys name attached in enough“. I make plenty of excuses for the end but I secretly hate it and it was soooooooooooo satisfying to see Fincher admit that they kind of ran out of time and money and had no idea how to wrap it up. I don’t hate it enough to not love that one.

And Blue Ruin

I watched Blue Ruin after I had watched Green Room and it hit differently for me. I think the >!crux of the film was a bit muddy and the revenge angle wasn't explained well until almost the dead end of things. I don't know if I nodded off but there just wasn't a reason for him to be doing the things he was doing until a one liner at the end of the film that explained the families had history.!< Maybe I'm due for a rewatch. Green Room owns.

It ended exactly as it should have.

I was at the premiere to this. It was pretty good, but the band members are so dumb I just hated them, lol

Whiplash. Not really a thriller, but I've never been as tense watching a movie in my entire life.

Misty7297 Mar 23, 2026 +7
Good Time is an anxiety attack in movie form

space-cyborg Mar 23, 2026 +2
Obligatory “Uncut Gems” mention.

Active_Milk5314 Mar 23, 2026 +8
Have you heard of The Next Three Days? Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks

souleman96 Mar 23, 2026 +13
Almost any Denis Villeneuve. Sicario, Prisoners, Incendies.
13
MortLightstone Mar 23, 2026 +1
Yeah, he's great at this. Incendies is a masterpiece. Pretty much everything I've watched from him is

I also don’t really get satisfied with horror movies too often, but I’d have to say Sinister is probably one of my favorites when I want to scratch that itch. Seeing it in theater was different than watching it on TV, but it still holds up IMO.

Green Room and Sicario

Just saw Undertone in theaters and was kinda blown away

PotentialAd9543 Mar 25, 2026 +1
I felt there was a let down with the ending. A lot of build up and then nothing.
1
velvet_nebulablast_6 Mar 23, 2026 +4
Se7en still hits. The atmosphere alone is enough to keep you on edge the whole time.
4
MortLightstone Mar 23, 2026 +1
Just watched it again on 35 mm. Hilariously, I've only ever watched it in 35 mm. I skipped school to watch this when it first came out back in the day. Still one of the best crime films I've ever seen

iliketoworkhard Mar 23, 2026 +5
Once coherence gets into its groove it does not let up
5
tomandshell Mar 23, 2026 +8
Parasite, Shutter Island, Fargo, The Usual Suspects, The Silence of the Lambs, Collateral, Sicario, Seven, Psycho, Rear Window—all depending on your definition of thriller, I guess.
8
MortLightstone Mar 23, 2026 +1
Yeah, I don't know if I'd call Parasite a thriller, but I agree with the other picks
1
Batfern Mar 23, 2026 +3
Law Abiding Citizen

eastwestmover Mar 23, 2026 +3
Free Solo. Didn’t know anything about his story. Knew he’d be ok, but my fists were clenched the entire movie.
3
Acceptable-You-6428 Mar 23, 2026 +3
I agree. It was hard for me to watch it all the way through despite being a great documentary.
3
phaedra_p Mar 23, 2026 +2
In this vein, Thirteen Lives had me sweating even though I knew the real life outcome. Such great performances too. I loved it.
2
peachy_moonwhisper_1 Mar 23, 2026 +3
Prisoners stressed me OUT in the best way. That whole movie just keeps tightening the tension and never really lets you breathe.
3
sielingfan Mar 23, 2026 +3
It's impossible to relax at all while watching Black Swan Also, it's a bit dated now and hasn't quiiiiite age perfectly, but Running Scared with Paul Walker was a very intense experience the first few times I watched it. That movie does not let up ever.

Crolis1 Mar 23, 2026 +3
United 93. You already know what happened, but the way it is filmed and plays out keeps you on the end he of your seat the entire movie.

_back_in_the_woods_ Mar 23, 2026 +3
I Saw the Devil. One of my top 3 favorite movies of all time.
3
Fair-Calligrapher-19 Mar 23, 2026 +3
It's not horror,  but Fury Road was the most edge of your seat movie experience for me

when i was a kid the movie “they” scared the shit out of me but unfortunately it didn’t survive the test of time lol
2
AndJusticeForAll-88 Mar 23, 2026 +2
I like these movies: Déjà Vu (2006), Limitless (2011), Self/less (2015), The Adjustment Bureau (2011), A Perfect Getaway (2009)
2
Own-Librarian-9699 Mar 23, 2026 +2
No Way Out is pretty good for this. Hackman and Kevin Costner.  Apollo 13 is basically a true life thriller.
2
Lmoneyfresh Mar 23, 2026 +2
It Follows sounds pretty close to what you're describing. Hard for me to describe without spoiling the concept but it keeps you locked in.
2
MortLightstone Mar 23, 2026 +1
I know about it, yeah. Haven't seen it though

Hellraiser II

_caltony Mar 23, 2026 +2
Sicario and Nocturnal Animals are probably two of the most stressful non-horror films I’ve watched.
2
sightlab Mar 23, 2026 +2
Climax. No rules, just a sudden complete tonal shift that in classic Noe fashion lets you know all bets are off.
2
_back_in_the_woods_ Mar 23, 2026 +3
One of the most tense and dreadful movies I've ever watched
3
space-cyborg Mar 23, 2026 +3
Barbarian, the babadook, grave encounters. Oculus. The Ring.
3
MortLightstone Mar 23, 2026 +2
The Babadook was a weird watch for me. It seemed very formulaic and I had recently seen multiple horror movies about a parent that might be going crazy, with the twist being that she's not and the evil is real. Really well done though, so I was mostly still impressed
2
space-cyborg Mar 23, 2026 +1
Agreed. I’d heard a ton about it so didn’t expect much but it was surprisingly creepy.

shoot to kill. not really an on the edge thriller, but it has a grid cast
1
honey_starlilac_53 Mar 23, 2026 +1
No Country for Old Men. Every scene with Chigurh feels like it could go sideways at any second
1
qwertyopus Mar 23, 2026 +1
Throw a curveball with Paranormal Activity. Kinda horror but it never really happens, sort of haha
1
fullmoon63 Mar 23, 2026 +1
If you want pure tension, Uncut Gems had me stressed the entire time. Also Prisoners is incredible for that slow-burn dread where you constantly feel like something bad is about to happen.
1
Jstrom716 Mar 23, 2026 +1
The Next Three Days
1
Pithecanthropus88 Mar 23, 2026 +1
The final 10 minutes of North By Northwest had me literally on the edge of my seat the first time I saw it.
1
doitcloot Mar 23, 2026 +1
The Vanishing (1988) and Sorcerer. both are a little more of a slow burn but are exceptional thrillers.
1
MortLightstone Mar 24, 2026 +1
Yeah, Sorcerer keeps being mentioned. I found out about it from Reddit. It'll probably be my first watch
1
res30stupid Mar 23, 2026 +1
Unstoppable. Seeing them try and stop the train is thrilling.
1
BatLikeOvercoat Mar 24, 2026 +2
Speed too. Speed was a phenomenon when it came out.

mr_wiggle_biscuit Mar 23, 2026 +1
Gravity.

yeah same, suspense hits way harder than horror for me. Prisoners and Uncut Gems had me stressed the whole time
1
MortLightstone Mar 23, 2026 +1
Yeah, Prisoners was a stressful watch for sure
1
Blenda33 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Uncut Gems
1
darkholemind Mar 23, 2026 +1
Gone Girl and Prisoners. Slow burns that keep you tense without a single jump scare.
1
MortLightstone Mar 23, 2026 +1
I don't know, I jump pretty high and the NPH sex scene That ending had me disturbed for weeks
