What are your pets' strange quirks?

Posted by TheOverthinkingBean

I’m such a huge animal lover and I really wanna hear what weird but cute things your pets do. I have a sweet pup named Arty. He’s about 2ish and can get a little mouthy when he’s excited so we keep bones all over the house to help him out. Now whenever someone walks in he realizes he wants to do his little nibbles, panics for a second, and sprints to find a bone. He’ll come back with it shoved in his mouth and do this full-body "happy wiggle" in front of them since he can’t use his mouth to say hi. So excited to hear what others do! :D

I have a border collie that breaks into sprints randomly and hops and then ducks down as if he's herding me.

TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +7
Ahh that's awesome! You ever play around and say bahhh like a sheep?
7
MourningsOwn Mar 31, 2026 +11
I have not done this, but I will do it from now on, silly me.

TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +3
You're gonna confuse the heck outta your dog and its gonna amazing.

honkyslonky Mar 31, 2026 +14
I have a pair of brother/sister cats that do literally everything together. Even poop or eat.
14
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +3
Now that's sweet. You dont have to worry about them ever being lonely.

My horse has to pee before every meal, right as you bring his feed out to the pasture. He does it so frequently that my mom's horse, who is half his age, must think "this is what we're supposed to do" because he now does it also!
11
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +6
Ayo yess a horse owner! Okay this is random but I wonder what caused them to develop that behavior. So interesting!
6
Shine_Onyx Mar 31, 2026 +2
Yes! I'm not sure! He's lived at several barns where he's mostly lived in a stall with part of the day out in the pasture, and has had several barn mates but I've not known any others who do that! He's a very interesting guy and I think its a habit he formed all on his own 😂 the last place he lived before living at my house was one of my closest friend's farm which is where it seemed to start and sometimes she even would pull his bowl out and he would have peed IN it after eating 😂😂😂

We have a pregnant mare that does that.

I have an Indian ringneck who loves to scream loudly into empty glasses and they laugh and do it again. He’s also afraid of reflections of himself in spoons! He also loves to preen my arm hair and beard hair and whenever he accidentally rips out a beard hair and I flinch he laughs. He’s one of one and he’s my best friend. Love the guy.

TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +4
What an odd duck! So cute though! How funny he enjoys your pain haha.
4
puddl3 Apr 1, 2026 +5
It’s not pain it’s more like an unexpected pinch. He’s so emotionally intelligent it’s wild. He knows when I’m down and will fly over and give me kisses and say I love you while chewing on my ears lol. Birds have much more intelligence that people who have never owned them understand. He also knows the sound of my cars. So whenever I come home I can hear him screaming happy noises lol. He’s such a character so his buddy blueberry.

My yorkie takes his stuffed animals for walks. They are stored in his little pop-up house. He'll take one, make a loop around the house, then tuck it back in. He has a lion, a dinosaur and a panda. He doesn't like the other ones. They don't live with him and they don't get daily walks.
8
TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +2
My goodness I can picture him deciding which one deserves to go with today. Love that a dinosaur is one of his favorites!

My boy cat does the happy tail vibrations for every meal, I call it his dinner dance
7
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +3
Does his tail get all poofy?
3
GlitterEnema Apr 1, 2026 +4
I haven’t checked closely, I’m always just giggling that his tail is vibrating and it makes his butt wiggle
4
tzentzak Mar 31, 2026 +6
One of my dogs likes to take her bones and toys out of her toy box, then line them up on the floor in an orderly fashion.
6
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +3
What a smart doggy!

thistle-dew Mar 31, 2026 +6
My cat, Pancake, will only play with plastic straws. He goes crazy for them. He also gets "stuck" in the bathtub and yells until someone "rescues" him.
6
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +2
What does he do with them??
2
Pure-Incident-7511 Mar 31, 2026 +5
My baby passed away a couple years ago, but whenever I'd leave the house, he would always find one of my hair ties somewhere and carry it around in his mouth while mewing to find me. It was heartbreaking when I first found out but then I thought it was utterly adorable
5
TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +3
Its sweet you have that memory of them doing that because of you. Animals are all so unique and show their love for us in many ways.
3
Pure-Incident-7511 Apr 1, 2026 +3
He was an absolute pain in the butt, but also a massive sweetheart. It's been a couple years since he passed on and it still feels like it just happened. I love the memories that I have of him, I just wish that the majority of my pictures hadn't gotten lost, I have so few left, but I made sure to save them in multiple forms and I plan on printing them out soon too

I have a very territorial cat who growls when someone knocks on the door. She is so attention-obsessed that she has developed amazing recall. She comes running when her name is called, but also when any of the other pets names are called. If she hears someone else being fussed over, she will wake up from a dead sleep and trot over.

KnitNGrin Mar 31, 2026 +4
We used to have a ferret that liked booze. My husband would leave his glass out at night, then in the morning she’d drink the bit of ice melt.
4
allmykitlets Mar 31, 2026 +5
My cat won't let anyone see him poop.
5
TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +2
Hey now! Everyone deserves their privacy during that time.
2
Dioxybenzone Mar 31, 2026 +3
One of my dogs just *has* to take his toys outside. Sometimes shoes, too.
3
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +2
Oh man hopefully they don't get soaked!
2
Dioxybenzone Mar 31, 2026 +2
They do!
2
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +3
Oh well! Hahah.
3
UnderstandingTop7715 Mar 31, 2026 +3
My cat Buffy always meows or makes a cat noise when any can is opened
3
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +2
Haha they must remind you to give them a little something.
2
Unfair-Reindeer7492 Mar 31, 2026 +3
I have a rescued Chiweenie, he’s 7, I’ve had him two years. Whenever I leave the house he takes one of my slippers. Never both, just one, I find it wherever.
3
TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +2
Thats a fun game you two play. Imagine if they are they thinking you are enjoying the hide and seek game and won't stop because you keep finding it. Hahah.
2
mjh8212 Mar 31, 2026 +3
My cats are starting to act like each other. One would roll onto her back and look cute for attention but don’t rub her belly. Now the other three are doing the same thing two of them you can pet the belly. One insists on sleeping on the stove we remove him clean the stove and cook. He usually sits on the coffee pot and watches us cook. Having four cats it’s cuteness overload some days.
3
TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +2
Holy smokes! You guys have quiet the pawful over there!
2
MyDamnCoffee Mar 31, 2026 +3
My one cat, punkin, will climb onto my chest in bed with his ears back, as if annoyed that my child is also lying next to me. If I ignore sunny for too long, he will literally jump into my arms. I have learned to sit down and pet him for a few seconds to avoid sudden cat acrobatics And daylight sits by his wet food dish and stares at me imploringly until I pick them up off the floor since he's already eaten, usually
3
TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +2
Kinda funny how these little guys can get jealous for our affection and attention.
2
MyDamnCoffee Apr 1, 2026 +2
Definitely lol. He like dares her to push him away
2
Rough-Demand-8195 Mar 31, 2026 +3
At some point, my dog decided that 8:00 p.m. was bed time, so every night at 8:00, he will come into whatever room I'm in and stare at me until I stop what I'm doing and go to the bedroom with him.
3
TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +2
I mean 8 isnt horrendously early for bedtime hahah. He's teaching you some good habits. Gotta wake up early for your guys walk aye.
2
LordLettucePrey Mar 31, 2026 +3
My little black cat loves nature documentaries! Shell stop whatever shes doing (or wake up) and come running in and watch at full attention. Especially crocodiles for some reason, haha
3
TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +3
Is David Attenborough her favorite??
3
LordLettucePrey Apr 1, 2026 +1
Not sure about that, but I think she likes the ultra-dramatic music they all use. XD
1
tutamuss Apr 1, 2026 +3
I have a dog that whenever she poops has to turn and look at her butt while she's pooping. She ends up going in circles as she poops.
3
DollySheep32 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Weirdo Pippin will come say hi, immediately leave to get one specific toy, then continue to say hi. If you sit down during this period he will shove it in your face.
3
Hot_Construction_307 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Almost every night right after I go to bed, my cat will be in the living room and make these crazy- sounding, very dramatic MOOOWs. I think he might be lonely because if I call him he comes running and is so happy.
3
MrsClaire07 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Mine all do this, after dark but when I go looking for them, they’ll ALWAYS have a special toy in their mouths!

My Golden Doodle, Abbey, thinks she’s really sneaky and when she thinks I’m asleep will try to slowly jump into my bed. She’s about 70 pounds and she really isn’t that sneaky. Sometimes I let her stay in bed just because she worked so hard to not wake me up to get into bed
3
TheOverthinkingBean Apr 1, 2026 +3
Haha my arty tries to be sneaky too to get into bed. And he's big too. Kinda funny seeing them try to be subtle. Like dude you're not fooling anyone but yyou're making it cute enough for me to let it slide.
3
JohnCR61 Apr 1, 2026 +3
Exactly! If she works that hard to get into bed I feel like I almost have to let her stay

I have a chihuahua that hops like a bunny when she’s excited. 😆

My rescued pit (passed 2 years ago) had a bunch of quirks. - Despite being a stray after she settled in the house she was very prissy. She hated getting wet, even just her paws. She hated getting mud on her paws or snow. In wet or snowy weather she'd do her business quick judt off the porch and run back to the house. - I taught her a list of words "Poops, Food, Dude, Walk, Water, Cuddles" when she'd huff we'd say the words and she would give a little bark and bounce to indicate that was what she wanted. - Her favorite spot to lay was wherever my armpit was with her nose buried in it. - She loved being carried, especially as she got older. On walks when she was tired I'd pick her up and carry her with one arm so her paws and head were on my shoulder. - She would never jump on furniture without being told to, except for her chair where she slept.

that's adorable, i love how he has his own little greeting ritual! my cat does a similar thing where she brings her favorite toy to me whenever someone visits, like an awkward but sweet show-and-tell. can’t wait to hear about more pets!

TheOverthinkingBean Mar 31, 2026 +2
Aw man that is cute. Do you give her pets and a little award?

My GSD will walk around puddles rather than through them, no matter how big or small it is. He also likes to rub his face on the edge of seat cushions.

PerplexedPoppy Apr 1, 2026 +2
One of my dogs won’t go through a slightly opened door. Idk if it’s a respect thing, a fear thing, or a confusion thing. The other dog always farts when she jumps up to the couch or bed. We call it her power boost. But she gets highly offended when you call her out on it.

My Great Dane loves to watch birds She sits on the deck and happily watches them and wags her tail. I set up several bird feeders for her to enjoy watching the birds.

One day, years ago, I was scratching my cat’s belly absentmindedly while looking at my phone, and managed to accidentally scratch the back of his leg. He LOVED IT. It became his new favorite thing, and still is to this day. Whenever he’s laying down and I touch him anywhere other than his head, he immediately pops his foot out and straightens his leg so that I can scratch it. It cracks me up, and anytime he does it while my boyfriend is over I say “m’leggie” which makes both of us laugh.
2
lerpz_ Apr 1, 2026 +2
My dog (chihuahua & pug mix) is absolutely obsessed with scratches. She loves full body hard scratches and she'll throw a tantrum sometimes if you stop scratching her. I'm talking like full on with throw herself backward and whine type of tantrum, it's so pathetic lol. And she straight up moans in pleasure too when getting scratched, she's so goofy.
2
PandaBear905 Apr 1, 2026 +2
My older dog loves to lick people when they’re petting him. If he can’t reach them he’ll just lick the air. He also does that cartoony leg kick if you scratch him just right. You’ll know he’s loving the petting because he’ll do both at the same time. My younger dog runs in circles when he’s excited. Sometimes it’ll be big circles around a piece of furniture or little circles like an overexcited cyclone. Also both my dogs love to cuddle with each other. It’s very cute.

My chihuahua is an old man, a forever foster due to him being an a****** to everyone but me. Coco has a deformed breastbone, and has to be picked up a certain way or it's painful for him. We have worked out a routine where he backs up to me so I can pick him up, but if he's really excited, he kinda vibrates himself all over the place and does a happy dance. I have to wait for him to calm himself down, and he gets so frustrated!

When my cat catches a rodent outside, she brings it to the deck and slams it against the back door until we notice. The back door is glass btw. It’s quite the show. After we have praised her enough and told her what a great mouser she is, she usually eats it.
2
savage21588 Apr 1, 2026 +2
I have 3 pups. One has a unique howl that used when its time to eat. Its so cute and feral at the same time. Other pup howls when i listen to The Weekend. Something about the vocals makes him sing along, its so cute😂😂😂

My cat was free. She was snatched off the street underweight with 1/2 the about of hair she should have had. Her gallon gravity waterer was fine until she was a healthy weight, now little miss healthy needs to drink water out of a mug.

My Nuggie stares at me until I put on my jacket and pick up her harness. Then she eats. It’s so odd and adorable.

Me and my cat have floofing time. Ever since she was tiny she would crawl onto me and knead on my shoulder while laying accross me. Completely getting lost in it and eventually passing out. She can get forceful. I also have to be wearing something fluffy, but not just any type.. She prefers the sherpa type fleece. I have a sherk mumu with this. It is her favorite and she will ask for it if I'm not wearing it. She will literally stop mid floof, look sad and look at where i keep it aka "the green". She will walk up to me and no matter what I am doing she will crawl up my torso and just melts into me. She also likes sleeping on her back so i have to help get her in the right position as she floofs. She will start turning but not pay attention while doing so and has fallen off... so i have to guide her turn. She will push off me with her back feet to let me know she is ready to turn more. She isn't a little kitten any more and barely fits on me. I hope she never stops.

My kitty keeps peeing and pooping right on the doormat... I’m at my wits' end.😹😹

My dog masturbates. Seriously. She licks herself until her leg starts kicking wildly and her whole body shakes and then she scrunches the blanket up under her to... finish the job?? And then she sighs and goes to sleep. It is legitimately the weirdest thing I have ever seen. I didn't even know dogs did that until I realized what she was doing.

MrsClaire07 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Ohhh, ALL animals do this. 😎👍🏻👍🏻

My Shiba Inu is a good old girl. While she enjoys regular snuggle time, she often moves into what we call "phase two" after a while... that is, she's done with the cuddle and moves juuust far enough away to avoid most contact. The strange quirk is that she likes to hold hands, so she often stays close enough after snuggling that she reaches out to put her paw in my hand and go to sleep.
