What are your thoughts on Apple TV

Posted by Thefilmcritic52

I think that Apple TV has is nice e.g Ted lasso , shrinking , Pluribus , the studio , severance , black bird , presumed innocent , For movies there are killers of the flower moon or CODA but they do have many flops and so to you do you believe that Apple TV is on the up with projects such as the studio or is it still f****** absolute shite

I think quality wise they have the higher %of shows that are hits for me they just dont have as many options

Their hit rate is pretty solid but yeah the catalog feels tiny compared to Netflix or whatever. I keep forgetting I even have subscription until something new drops that people are talking about

Yeah that's their main issue. They make great shows, but they don't really have enough content for me to feel the need to stay subscribed.

Agree. For quality v size of library they are easily the best of the streamers. (I am not counting HBO's back catalogue, some of which precedes streaming.) Two or three months a year in Apple will give you better viewing than if you spent that whole time searching Netflix for the same quality. Then just cancel out. You can also purchase some good things on there: series as well as movies, which you can then watch even when unsubscribed. They used to be hard to cancel out of, but they seem to have fixed that. Now Prime Video is the 😡

So long as Apple TV keeps making seasons of Slow Horses, I'm good.

What's good is really good. But there's not a lot, and sometimes you like something only to get 10 episodes with a 2 year break between series. This is not just an Apple problem but really makes a difference if there's only a few things you're interested in. My favorites: Severance, Pluribus, Ted Lasso

If you go show-by-show, the 'quality vs. quantity' line kind of goes out the window, as they put out a lot of mediocre to awful stuff. For instance, in the last six months they've had *The Last Frontier* S.1, *Loot* S.3, *Palm Royale* S.2, *The Last Thing He Told Me* S.2, *Hijack* S.2, *Invasion* S.3, *Monarch: Legacy of Monsters* S.2, *Down Cemetary Road* S.1, *Drops of God* S.2 (sadly a big step down from the fantastic first season)... That's a very significant portion of their line-up that just isn't very good (to say the least, in some cases). *Imperfect Women*, and the current seasons of *Your Friends & Neighbors* & *For All Mankind* (which has been on the decline since that amazing first season) are airing currently, and the writing for all of them is just rough. However, they've also had a decent amount of good to great content so far, and it's obvious that they put a lot of money into the majority of their programming. Plus, they've got a lot of potentially exciting projects in the pipeline. But at this point, it's obvious that Apple isn't trying to be HBO or FX: their programming is much safer, much more sanitized and risk averse, and designed to be more broadly appealing, but because of the high production values, the comparisons remain, even if it's not altogether warranted most of the time. And that makes sense, because at the end of the day, they're a giant tech corporation not a media company. Any negative opinions of the service tend to get met by a downvote brigade, but whatever - as someone who watches almost everything they put out, I just can't agree with the Listnook narrative that they release nothing but "bangers" when the reality is that that's the exception and not the rule.

Feels like Apple TV+ is the kid with straight‑A grades but only three classes. Super high hit rate, tiny library. Try Silo or Slow Horses if you haven’t.

Apple TV has stuck to its original plan. It is not "on the up" in regards to taking over the streaming world from Netflix, because the entire plan for Apple TV is to rebuild brand trust and brand association in order to drive customers back into its ecosystem and hardware. Apple TV is a major loss leader because they are knowingly pushing high budgets into a lower amount of quality shows for this plan because it is not the primary business for the company. Netflix on the other hand, has to cancel shows left and right because their entire business is just the streaming, so they can't just accept enormous losses for shows that have a middling-low reception. Netflix also is there for all age groups, so there is much more scattershot attempts to find hits, compared to Apple who can target an adult niche set of genres (like Sci-Fi) that are underrepresented because of budget needs surrounding them. So overall Apple TV by design is trying to be "on the up" for reputation of quality, but they'll never do so while being profitable as a business at the same time.

This is correct but For All Mankind is the cheapest show out there. It’s like they did the CGI with a Video Toaster from 1993, but that’s an insult to Commodore. And the sets are cost-cutting. Only on season TV few though.

A show doesn't HAVE to break the bank in its budget to be good, I wasn't making the point that every show they have directly then correlates to a big budget. Just saying they could afford to toss 100m on Severance S1 and 200m on Severance S2 because they believed in the vision and quality of the show, and not worried that the show would then "pay for itself" in subscriber upticks. And that this philosophy is what is driving the service because it isn't the primary business.

Higher quality on average, much lower quantity. Them holding off from airing The Savant is pathetic though.

They have a bunch of good stuff. Besides the huge flagship shows like Foundation, there are a bunch of smaller quirky shows like Physical, Dickinson, Shmigadoon, and Mr. Corman that are really enjoyable.

It's like every other streaming service. Watch it until you've watched what you wanted then move on.

i think they're pretty great. right now i would say the shows im looking forward to the most are on apple tv and the other platforms are still figuring it out but cancelling the shows i like. apple tv: platonic, mr. sugar, dark matter, bad monkey, foundation, for all mankind, criminal record, severance, the morning show, slow horses. while other platforms i can only think of a few hbo: task, the gilded age, white lotus, hacks (ending soon), the comeback netflix: beef, the witcher, the diplomat, black doves, dpet q, peacock: the paper, twisted metal amazon: fallout, overcompensating disney+: whatever marvel/star wars thing *maybe* paramount+: lioness, the agency, whatever star trek series left

“Many flops” is one way to put it I guess? I’d say a massive % of their shows hit the quality that other streamers simply do not. You’ve missed out numerous shows that are very good and high quality television Probably my favourite streamer tbh, a shame they don’t have as much but I’d take the quality over volume and often now they seem to have multiple shows on at once (currently they’re releasing big episodes of three shows every Friday)

Unfortunately as a US based Formula 1 fan who is tired of looking for unstable streaming options I’m stuck paying for it now that they bought the rights. Had done a trial on it previously to watch Mastets of the Air, otherwise none of their native content has been very appealing.
