No Country for Old Men Children of Men There Will Be Blood
337
Try_To_Write Mar 23, 2026 +60
Children of Men was released in the US on Dec 25, 2006. If it had released just 7 days later, they would all be 2007 movies. As far as US releases go, that is. Because it was first released in the UK on Sept 22, 2006. So more like 100 days; still close, but not as cool to say as 7.

burntroy Mar 23, 2026 +33
2007 was the most stacked year for good movies in recent memory
33

Recent… 😭 WHAT DID THEY DO TO US

deeds44 Mar 23, 2026 +11
No Country, There Will be Blood, Zodiac, Michael Clayton, Ratatoullie are all classics and all came out in 2007. Insane year.

1. Fellowship of The Ring (and the rest of the trilogy) 2. Inglorious Basterds 3. Grand Budapest Hotel

Grand Budapest getting love. Such an amazing movie and performance by Ralph Fiennes. That movie is like a 1.5 hour vacation without leaving your couch.

tehnoodnub Mar 23, 2026 +18
I can get behind this.

commencefailure Mar 23, 2026 +17
Can’t believe anybody is saying return of the king over fellowship.
17
RawDumpling Mar 23, 2026 +25
Fellowship is the best out of the trilogy
25
SteamBoatMickey Mar 23, 2026 +6
It’s the first act in a three act story. The “trilogy” is a complete story, like the books were intended. Fellowship slaps because first acts should pull you in, fall in love with the story to be told.

I see your Nazi movie and will raise you one Jojo Rabbit.

Solid choices. I haven’t seen Grand Budapest, but I’ll have to give it a look.

City of god Aftersun Mulholland Drive
104
latman Mar 23, 2026 +19
City of God is a great pick
19
Kaley08 Mar 23, 2026 +29
I watched Aftersun recently and can't stop thinking about it. I sobbed uncontrollably for hours after the credits rolled. I want to rewatch it because it was so beautiful but I can't bring myself to do that yet, I don't want to spend the next day with a headache from crying too much...
29
dontwantablowjob Mar 23, 2026 +3
I watch a lot of movies, like 5 per week on average and very rarely does a movie stick with me for so long. I still randomly think about aftersun years later, especially the ending. It was so perfectly crafted to hit you out of nowhere like a tonne of bricks and I'm not even a particularly emotional person. I think it probably definitely has a harder impact on you if you can relate to it in any way.

No country for old men The departed Superbad No particular order
233
Thatguyyoupassby Mar 23, 2026 +141
Superbad is just so so good. Captured the emotion of high school in the mid 2000s with absolute perfection. The drinking, the thought that everyone is doing cool shit, the NEED to have that one fling before college. It’s rare for a movie, much less a raunchy teen comedy, to capture a moment in life so perfectly. My friends and I are all in our 30s, and it’s still often quoted. Hell, every friend group I’ve had - high school, college, similarly-aged coworkers - it’s always a common thread. It’s not high brow, but it did what it did exceptionally well.

Big ups for the Social Network
20
FudgeAllOfYous Mar 23, 2026 +23
This is not meant to be cynical or as a critic, can someone tell me what’s going with social network? I remember watching it several yrs ago and it’s basically "this is how facebook happened and everyone involved is a douchebag”? did I miss something? why the universal praise?
23
hpff_robot Mar 23, 2026 +17
Just so well acted, scripted, and shot. There’s a cool breakdown of the breakup scene on yt that shows how crisp the editing from the jump is.
17
berlinbaer Mar 23, 2026 +6
the breakup is my favorite info dumps ever, it's so cleverly done. you think you are just watching an argument, but afterwards you know exactly who this person is, his priorities, know all their insecurities in regards to other people and money and how their whole college microcosm works.

I’m glad the fountain exists but I long for the version that could have been. I don’t think the product we got quite lived up to the vision.

Prisoners Oldboy The Incredibles
39
HairyH Mar 23, 2026 +11
Prisoners is so good. Gyllenhaal is great as always, but Jackman delivers probably his most compelling performance in that movie. And of course, Vileneuve directed it, so it was always going to be good.
11
CrowdyFowl Mar 23, 2026 +2
The denouement reveal in Oldboy is peak cinema, absolute gut punch without a single word used to tell you
2
MattDaaaaaaaaamon Mar 23, 2026 +66
Hard to pick the top 3, but off the top of my head I'll say: Arrival, Interstellar, and There Will Be Blood. And it's not simply because I have all of these movie posters framed in my movie room, but maybe partially.
66
vinicelii Mar 23, 2026 +18
Arrival is truly special. I finally watched it for the first time a few months ago and I cried not only because the story was powerful but because the movie was just so beautiful in general.
18
BastianHS Mar 23, 2026 +34
Arrival is a top 5 all time scifi movie

+1 for forgetting Sarah Marshall, great movie!
34
brainkandy87 Mar 23, 2026 +9
I used to fall asleep to that movie so often when it came out. I still do, but I used to too.
9
Dustmopper Mar 23, 2026 +20
If you love The Martian go see Project Hail Mary from the same author. Both excellent books and great movies.
20

Definitely watch it. I sat on the sidelines for so long just being like oh yeah I’ll get around to watching it but I finally did and it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen hands down

lindcookie Mar 23, 2026 +21
I really love about time. Movies that have a huge "elephant in the room" that's still just a minor plot point is one of my fav genres. In this case you have literal time travel, but the movie is more about a boy going thru adulthood and his relationship with his dad. I also really like Force Majeure (2014) which is ostensibly about a family trying to get away from the Alps after getting stuck by an avalanche, but really it's about how a wife no longer can look at her husband the same way after he saved himself over his kids.
21
hooliews Mar 23, 2026 +6
I’ll watch Force Majeure just from your perception of it.
6
lindcookie Mar 23, 2026 +3
Please do! And let me know what you thought! Its a Swedish movie so some nuance might be lost if not viewed in its original language, but the point still comes across very clearly

16

Right? That soundtrack is amazing.
6
Tlr321 Mar 23, 2026 +2
Score aside, that movie has one of my favorite Needle Drops of any movie ever with “*Baby You’re a Rich Man*” to round it out at the end. It’s *so* fitting in the *most* ironic way possible. The whole background of the song is that the “Beautiful People” (Counterculture Hippies in 1960s California) were spiritually rich, but not Materially & that you didn’t to be wealthy to be rich. Plopping that song at the very end of a biopic about the—at the time—youngest self-made billionaire in the world is some serious poetic irony. And I can 100% guarantee that Fincher did so intentionally.

1. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford 2. The Tree of Life 3. The Prestige or Interstellar 4. honorable mention: In Bruges TAOJJBTCRF is the only one I'm sure of (my favorite movie of all time), the rest are off the top of my head. Might have different answers if I gave it more thought.
10
belbivfreeordie Mar 23, 2026 +2
I really wanna watch Jesse James again in blu ray quality, there were certain shots that blurred out over streaming because there was too much movement and detail. Really good.
2
giraffe_simons Mar 23, 2026 +2
Could it have been the lenses Roger Deakins used for certain shots? I'd sell my first born child (if I had one) to see the original extended cut.
2

The cinematography in Jesse James is unreal.

I couldn’t condense anything down to 3, but The Great Beauty by Paolo Sorrentino is 100% in the top 3

Honorable mentions: palm springs. I'm not even a fan of most of those actors or the whole groundhog day scenario. However that movie deserves mentioning at the very least. I'm also going to agree with children of men being absolutely fantastic. Definitely deserves top 3.

The amount of No Country for Old Men and Fury Road in here is kind of odd to be honest. That’s not to denigrate those great films, it’s just rare to see consensus on anything. Personally, mine are Lost in Translation, Spiderman Into the Spiderverse, and Oh Brother Where Art Thou. With Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Spirited Away honorable mentions.

LOTR, Arrival, Interstellar. If I’m feeling conventional. Or Incendies, Spirited Away, Get Out. If I’m being honest.
