The OA, Devs, Pantheon, Foundation, Westworld Also cool to see Dollhouse appreciation here, I think this show was way ahead its time and is very underrated.

EyewarsTheMangoMan Apr 17, 2026 +19
Rip The OA :(

libra00 Apr 17, 2026 +5
I fuckin' loved Pantheon, although I really didn't jibe philosophically with the main character's motivation/decision at the end (>!'humans have to die or they won't be human anymore' is f****** nonsense!<) but it was still great.
5
kuschelig69 Apr 18, 2026 +2
was the end not far past that? >!There were never any real humans in the show. Only simulations of simulations.!<
2
libra00 Apr 18, 2026 +2
>!Right, but the main character's point was that those simulations were not human - not because they weren't instantiated in a substrate of brain-meats, but *just* because they didn't die. It assumes that it's somehow our *limitations* that make us what we are and not our ability to overcome them, and that's absurd. If there can be said to be one single human story it must be about how we adapt to and overcome our limitations with technology, whether that's fire or gas turbines or mind uploads. Anything that can convince you that it's human - that is to say, anything that behaves in a way that is indistinguishable from a human - is undifferentiable from a human.!<

Dollhouse was incredible (tbf all of Joss's professional work is, personal life not so much.) I really wish it had continued for at least another season to see what the conspiracy really was, as it stands its hard to speculate because so much was missing.

Killjoys was so much fun.

Real-Repair-1825 Apr 17, 2026 +8
It really was. Wynona Earp is kinda similar vibe wise, just a step below.

productjunkie76 Apr 17, 2026 +3
Wynonna earp is great. I just consider it supernatural and not as much sci fi.

johnsciarrino Apr 17, 2026 +80
Nice to see Fringe in here. I feel like they were forced to go one season too long. Had they been allowed to finish after season four it would have had better staying power in people’s minds. Still a great show regardless though.

ncghgf Apr 17, 2026 +32
From what I understand they were actually hoping to go for several seasons longer but it became clear that by S4 they didn’t have the ratings to support it. They were actually pretty fortunate the network gave them a truncated finale season to wrap everything up.
32
glossycoast Apr 17, 2026 +21
That's what I heard too. Spoilers for Fringe's final season: There was always an endgame to the Observers story, but they didn't have much time to tell it, so the last season always felt too short and rushed to me. Pity, because I really liked September's story. And Walter's sacrifice.
21
regressionsimulator Apr 17, 2026 +23
I loved the last season! S4 would have been a good ending for sure, but S5 was like they were given the freedom to expand on whichever topic/lore they wanted to - an opportunity to explore character depths and concepts even further. Personally it felt like it was written for the fans and it was super fun!
23
johnsciarrino Apr 17, 2026 +6
I don’t disagree with you but it very much felt like it was tacked on to me. Also, remember, we were coming off of Lost and one of the original promises of Fringe was that it had a complete narrative from the outset. Adding season 5 undid some of that good, at least at the time it aired.
6
PianoPudding Apr 17, 2026 +4
From what I understand Fringe was very unlikely to get a 5th season, but mercifully they did, so they wrapped up the plot the way it was always (kinda) intended worh a reduced run of 13 episodes.
4
imsorryisuck Apr 17, 2026 +2
come on. fringe started so good and then wasted it all on the alternative universe arch. meh
2
Zankabo Apr 18, 2026 +2
The biggest upside of the last season was it gave that great scene with Walter playing "The Man Who Sold the World". Considering there were other references to Bowie in the series it was great to see that song which so encapsulated Walter.

Devs still lives in my head rent free
9
snowbanks1993 Apr 17, 2026 +15
Devs beeing mentioned is rather nice really under apriciated show
15
ciniseris Apr 17, 2026 +4
Everyone thinks TLOU S01E03 was the first showcase of Nick Offerman's range, but then you show them DEVS and they realize his true brilliance.
4
WessyNessy Apr 17, 2026 +8
Devs does not get enough love. It was so good

>Science fiction is an existential metaphor that allows us to tell stories about the human condition. Isaac Asimov once said, "Individual science fiction stories may seem as trivial as ever to the blinded critics and philosophers of today, but the core of science fiction, its essence, has become crucial to our salvation, if we are to be saved at all." Stargate SG1 - ep. "200"
68
rakzee Apr 17, 2026 +18
The authors of the Expanse novels also had this to say about Science Fiction: > One of the joys of the project has always been how we were able to play around with genre. Science fiction is great that way. There's not a particular story at the root of it the way there is with other genres. > A romance, either the people are going to hate each other at the beginning and fall in love by the end or love each other at the beginning and die, depending on whether it's in the shadow of Pride & Prejudice or Romeo & Juliet. > A mystery, generally someone's going to be killed and someone's going to find out why. > Science fiction can be anything from a rigorous speculative adventure like Andy Weir's The Martian, to semi-hallucinatory philosophical allegory by Philip K. D***, to a locked-room mystery on a spaceship. > There's room for all of it.
18
Triskan Apr 17, 2026 +5
And to go even further, the spectrum from fantasy to scifi is virtually infinite, it's such a beautiful sandbox to play in.
5
eekamuse Apr 18, 2026 +2
I love that.

A similar quote about fantasy: >And, sure, fantasy stories are about those things, about princes and magical swords and all that stuff, and those things are certainly childish in a certain way. But that's where their power comes from. From places that are really so fragile that they have to be hidden away from life's hard edges. And that's what growing up is, really, a relentless shedding of childhood things that are too impractical to carry forward into adulthood. Too fragile to expose to the light. Too achingly embarrassing to really say out loud. Fantasy's role is to create a world where the howling absences and random tragedies of life have hidden meanings. It's to fulfill that childish desire, hopefully still alive in all of us, all of you. To be special. >In real life, words fail us, all the time. Every day. There's things you want to say to people that you just never say. For your whole life. In fantasy, life-long bonds are forged wordlessly with dragons and owls and wolves. And these tales are a way to meet profound grief wrapped in the armor of imagination. – Jason Concepcion

I miss Eureka
43
Feeling-Visit1472 Apr 17, 2026 +6
I rewatch it often but they just took it off of Prime, so now I’m seeking other ways.
6
harrisarah Apr 17, 2026 +4
I couldn't find it other ways so had to buy the bluray set. If you do, get the German version. The USA Mill Creek one jams them into very few discs and is of much lower picture quality. The German one has the original English audio and subs, only real difference are the boxes
4
Feeling-Visit1472 Apr 17, 2026 +2
Oh, good to know! No subtitles or dubbing?

I'm literally watching the final episode of SG1 season 1. This is my first time watching. Does it get better? While there have been some great single episodes, I've found the season generally underwhelming.
6
f1del1us Apr 17, 2026 +9
It gets a lot better. Once you finish season 7 you can start alternating episodes with SGA for the comprehensive experience
9
Karl_Cross Apr 17, 2026 +5
Yeah, I've got a watching order if I stick it that long. Thanks.

If people don’t have battlestar galactica in their top sci fi list I assume their opinions are invalid. How is this so far down?
10
fzammetti Apr 17, 2026 +30
5. The Expanse 4. Red Dwarf 3. Star Trek: The Next Generation 2. Stargate SG-1 1. Babylon 5 (by a wide margin) Honorable mentions: The Expanse, Dr. Who, Battlestar: Galactica, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Outer Limits
30
TheOnlyVertigo Apr 17, 2026 +10
I am disappointed that I had to scroll THIS far to find Babylon 5 on someone's list....
10
forksforspoons Apr 17, 2026 +2
I was just thinking the same.
2
MaimedJester Apr 17, 2026 +2
I think the rights issue has been holding it back for newer fans, and also the CGI oh my. The Spaceship scenes do not hold up lol.. But if you want a show to show you the philosophical difference between what do you desire and who are you? Then Watch Babylon 5. I'm gonna insert my favorite Kosh quote. "The Avalanche has already started. It is too late for the Pebble to vote."

17

Try The Expanse Or DS9 which gets really good once it gets going
14
Dag-nabbitt Apr 17, 2026 +6
DS9. Babylon 5 Give those a shot
6
Dittymaker Apr 17, 2026 +95
X Files Greatest chemistry between two actors to ever hit the screen. The show also has some of the best cinematography and atmosphere, very few shows even today can hold a candle to the X Files
95
CrissBliss Apr 17, 2026 +18
They really milked the chemistry between actors. The will-they-won’t-they went on forever 😅
18
Dittymaker Apr 17, 2026 +24
Fun fact you may or may not know but the term "shippers" originated from this show. The OG fans who wanted Mulder and Scully to be a couple were called relationshippers which got shortened to shippers lol
24
CrissBliss Apr 17, 2026 +3
That’s cool! I didn’t know that.
3
eightdollarbeer Apr 17, 2026 +37
The Orville, Black Mirror, Twilight Zone, Infinity Train, Futurama
37
WillieMustDie Apr 17, 2026 +22
The Orville doesn't get enough love. I'm very glad we're getting more episodes.
22
BrightEmber Apr 17, 2026 +3
Infinity Train mentioned!!!! I already love or plan to watch almost every single show mentioned in this thread, but so glad someone brought up Infinity Train. It's really a shame it was written off and cancelled.
3
draxlaugh Apr 17, 2026 +102
The Expanse, Futurama, Pluribus (new addition!), Westworld (S1), and the X-Files I would say Andor if I considered Star Wars science fiction but I don't. Star Wars is space fantasy.
102
EntrepreneurPale4400 Apr 17, 2026 +30
dude Futurama is such a solid pick, been rewatching that on deployment and it still cracks me up every time. The X-Files too, classic stuff right there totally agree about Star Wars being space fantasy btw - always gets people heated when you point that out but it's true. More magic and chosen ones than actual science never heard of Pluribus though, is that new show worth checking out? been looking for something fresh since I burned through most of the classics during downtime
30
smegblender Apr 17, 2026 +5
Re pluribus, if you find the protagonist annoying in the first couple of episodes, they become absolutely excruciating later.
5
Cyhawk Apr 17, 2026 +2
IMO thats the point. Shes the absolute worst person in this situation to exist.
2
Bigtits38 Apr 17, 2026 +6
Pluribus is in Apple+ and very much worth your time. One of the best shows in the last few years.
6
Jesse_m_w Apr 17, 2026 +17
Futurama is absolutely amazing and emotionally devastating
17
draxlaugh Apr 17, 2026 +14
But also, more importantly, Futurama does hard sci-fi better than a lot of other shows. They just make fun of it
14
zero_msgw Apr 17, 2026 +4
Second
4
CrissBliss Apr 17, 2026 +9
Westworld is amazing
9
MattFromWork Apr 17, 2026 +11
Season 1 Westworld is among the best television I have ever seen. It's a real shame they never went on to make more seasons.
11
kokopelli73 Apr 17, 2026 +11
Andor isn't really scifi or space fantasy, it's a political drama.
11
2347564 Apr 17, 2026 +9
It’s also a spy thriller, I’d say.
9
draxlaugh Apr 17, 2026 +8
Sure, but I'm really just lumping it in with Star Wars as a whole for this post. Andor is my favorite TV show of all time, without question.
8
TheStabbyCyclist Apr 17, 2026 +10
Hmmm... I enjoyed Pluribus but I'm not sure it deserves to be among those other truly great shows.
10
aakaido Apr 17, 2026 +12
In no particular order Dark Matter, The 100, Travelers, Raised by Wolves, and Altered Carbon
12
EyewarsTheMangoMan Apr 17, 2026 +6
Another the 100 fan let's go
6
Hunter_S_Thompsons Apr 17, 2026 +58
1. The Expanse 2. Foundation 3. For All Mankind 4. Silo 5. The peripheral Some shows I’ve found myself going back and rewatching.
58
NWStormbreaker Apr 17, 2026 +25
I'm on S3 of For All Mankind and I cannot believe how long I slept on this gem, and from reading others comments they are too.
25
Rozzy915 Apr 17, 2026 +17
Apple TV has the best television of the 2020s so far
17
Makepizzle Apr 17, 2026 +5
What am i missing with for all mankind? Im a sucker for sci fi and i love the rest of your list, but I just found for all mankind tedious and all about the people drama. Maybe I need to give it another shot
5
Hunter_S_Thompsons Apr 17, 2026 +4
I totally get where you’re coming from. It’s not traditional storytelling. Super slow. A lot of character development. But as the show progresses they don’t take the audience for granted. Everyone’s motivations are usually their own and you get some unexpected outcomes because of it. I was a big fan of Man in The High Castle and felt it was very similar with the alternate history. But if you’re looking for something else to throw on here’s another 5 lol. 1. Pantheon (UNDERRATED) one of my favs. 2. Dark Matter (Apple) 3. Dark (Netflix) 4. Strange New Worlds (I say this as someone who’s not a Trekkie lol) - my friends are all Star Trek nerds. 5. The Man Who Fell To Earth (the new one)(the Bowie one is good as well but the show is really fun). Also: 1. 3 Body Problem 2. Resident Alien 3. Psycho Pass (first couple seasons go hard) (anime) 4. Chernobyl (f****** amazing) 5. Scavengers Reign (anime)
4
just_another_reddit Apr 17, 2026 +3
Er... Chernobyl actually happened.
3
Bigtits38 Apr 17, 2026 +7
I find Foundation kind of tedious (and I liked the books).
7
Shmeeglez Apr 17, 2026 +3
There are definitely some storylines I find way more interesting than others in this show.
3
mousephina Apr 17, 2026 +8
Foundation is an excellent adaptation imo

Severance, Mr Robot, Westworld, Devs, Foundation Also enjoyed the OA, The Expanse, Pluribus, Black Mirror Loves the x-files when it was on, don’t know if I could watch it now :).
41
rbp25 Apr 17, 2026 +18
Foundation just keeps getting better and better. The empire plot is so unique it’s incredible
18
qjornt Apr 17, 2026 +7
The empire and demerzel plot is what keeps me attached to the show, and in spite of the blandness (not bad, not super) of the other plots, I’m still hooked and consider it in my top 5. That’s how much I like the empire plot. Man I’m so excited for the next season.
7
HouseHeisenb3rg Apr 17, 2026 +33
Mr robot is in my top 5 all time but it’s not Sci-Fi
33
PRL-Five Apr 17, 2026 +5
I guess techno-psychological thriller is the best way to describe it. Still one of the top 5 tv shows ever, mad underrated as well
5
RipperReeta Apr 17, 2026 +6
Finally. A rightful OA mention. 👏🏽 And Severance + Devs are both excellent.
6
JGirlJenn Apr 17, 2026 +8
Devs!
8
Dag-nabbitt Apr 17, 2026 +3
You think Mr Robot is sci-fi? I've got some bad news for you.
3
Android69beepboop Apr 17, 2026 +2
I guess it depends on the person, but I find x- files really holds up, and not just from nostalgia. If you haven't watched it since, at least find a best of list and rewatch those episodes. Or just peruse season 1.
2
maverick1470 Apr 17, 2026 +33

26

There are few shows that are as well written in any genre.
3
Ven0m889 Apr 17, 2026 +57
1 - Person of Interest 2 - Lost 3 - The Expanse 4 - Dark 5 - 12 Monkeys Honorable mentions: Agents of Shield, The 100, Raised by Wolves, Fringe, Severance, Firefly, Star Wars Rebels, Space Battleship Yamato 2199
57
Ambitious_Gift_8669 Apr 17, 2026 +10
Surprised I had to read this far to find 12 Monkeys. It’s such a spectacular show.
10
Ven0m889 Apr 17, 2026 +5
I was hooked immediately and it gets better and better until the very end. Definitely a must watch for any sci-fi fan
5
TheBigNate416 Apr 17, 2026 +3
It’s sooo good. Shame it flies under the radar but I’m just thankful I took someone’s recommendation on here to watch it. My favorite show of all time
3
TheBigNate416 Apr 17, 2026 +6
Happy to see The 100 mentioned. It was my gateway into Sci Fi so it’ll always be nostalgic. After season one it really gets heavy (though something pretty shocking does happen in S1). It’s not the best written show by any means, but I think they did an awesome job with world building and character arcs. Really wish we got the prequel
6
Ven0m889 Apr 17, 2026 +3
The 100 is the most underrated sci-fi show IMO. It continually re-invents itself every season and always stays interesting and the characters are great.
3
VegetableEvidence245 Apr 17, 2026 +2
I love The 100!
2
BastardInTheNorth Apr 17, 2026 +13
Dark is the most tightly written and perfectly executed sci-fi show I’ve ever seen. Most shows are open ended, with writers making up the plot as they go, one episode at a time. Dark has everything carefully plotted out in advance, and it shows.
13
shitty_owl_lamp Apr 17, 2026 +6
DARK is f****** amazing!
6
ohmytodd Apr 17, 2026 +11
I did not know Person of Interest was a sci fi show! ALSO, Thank you for being the first LOST, I’ve come across.
11
Shmeeglez Apr 17, 2026 +6
The sci-fi elements of PoI are pretty tertiary until much later, and even then it's still more of a spy show
6
Ven0m889 Apr 17, 2026 +2
POI starts as a light sci-fi but the sci-fi elements are turned up as it goes. Its final 2 seasons are peak sci-fi tv. I do think it takes a while to reach that level though, but it’s worth it.
2
Zasiah Apr 17, 2026 +28
Seeing a lot of great answers here, but nobody's brought up the 12 Monkeys tv show yet. It's a near perfect time travel show that actually lands the ending, which makes it unique.
28

More than any other show that I know, Almost Human was really messed up by the network airing the episodes out of order.
3

Fox really gave them the Firefly special.

Altered Carbon merits inclusion here. Black Mirror is fantastic.

DoctorDrangle Apr 17, 2026 +21
Altered Carbon season 1 for sure, whatever came after was meh.

HomicidalTeddybear Apr 17, 2026 +5
I seem to often be alone in having absolutely hated the second half of season 1, too, they completely butchered the book

Stephen268 Apr 17, 2026 +2
Yeah I feel like I'm going crazy every time I see people say it goes downhill in season 2. The writing was on the wall in season 1

I’m so sad Raised by Wolves was canceled. Such a creative show

StuffonBookshelfs Apr 17, 2026 +5
It really was. And you could make the best jokes about it too. It was awesome and batshit at the same time.

ST07153902935 Apr 17, 2026 +3
And then they canceled scavenger’s reign after they indicated season 2 would have the weird religion vibes that scratched my raised by wolves itch

LOST, Mr. Robot and Dark are absolutely wonderful. LOST was unlike anything before it. Wonderful cast, intriguing opening premise, complex, emotional, heart warming, gut wrenching. And Dark is the greatest show I've ever seen. But it truly is a watch without distraction experience. Incredibly complex but it all knits together brilliantly by the end. A fasntastic idea that's executed properly without making things up as the show goes along. Mr. Robot is not for everyone, and the themes and tone are quite hard to stick with at times. But the acting and writing are absolutely amazing. And there's a scene seasons in that has never left me so jaw droppingly shocked.

These aren't in ranked order: * TNG as a catalyst, but I don't really enjoy rewatching TNG anymore outside of the great episodes. * DS9 * SG-1 * Farscape * For All Mankind maybe? Part of me wants to give Babylon 5 the last one, part of me wants to give it to something newer.

Amazing to see The Expanse on pretty much everyone’s list. A rare gem of scifi but about humans in the possible near future.

> Star Trek (all of it) That's crazy. Star Trek has maybe the most variable quality out of everything. When it's good, it's maybe the best TV ever. When it's bad, it's completely unsalvageable trash.
2
MixingDrinks Apr 17, 2026 +2
Lol! I literally had the same convo yesterday. Even when it's trash, I am just happy we get Star Trek.
2
Cyhawk Apr 18, 2026 +2
The best part about Trek's trash episodes is, even the trash ones almost always build to the universe in a meaningful way. You can't say that for other TV shows.

Continuum, Eureka, Farscape, Alphas, Jericho I think Cotinuum is one of the best and most accurately prophetic sci-fi shows ever made and Jericho runs a close second. I know Alphas is more of a superhero type show but with a sci-fi slant to it but fantastic writing and acting.

Babylon 5, wish there would be a real good remaster of this series BSG 2003 Deep Space Nine, while the start was meh, it has some of the better Trek later on (fav: In the pale moonlight) Raumpatrollie, for those who know Futurama
