What can you do to occupy yourself when you're stuck for half an hour in a dentist's chair, unable to do much anything?

I bring my earphones and listen to music while getting happily high on the nitrous oxide. Pair that with some solid doses of Novocain. If you do it right, you’ll be left wishing you could spend more time in the chair. It’s the *only* way to fly.

Wondering why dentists always ask questions when your mouth is full of tools.

Make gutteral noises to give your perv dentist a boner.

count the ceiling tiles, or try to guess what the assistant is thinking about. you could also mentally plan your next snack, that always helps the time pass.

I basically run my entire internal monologue like a podcast nobody asked for. Full episode breakdowns of problems I have been avoiding. Business ideas I will never execute. Detailed imaginary arguments with people where I finally say the perfect thing. Occasionally I will mentally redecorate a room in my house or plan a trip I have no intention of taking. By the time they tell me to rinse and spit I have solved three problems, started two fictional companies, and won an argument from 2019. The dentist thinks I am calm. I am just busy.

This is the way. Let your mind wander to all the different places it wants to go but you never have time to let it. Earplugs help a lot. And, for me, making sure they give me the novocane without epinephrine. When I learned that was a thing you could do dental procedures became so much easier.

I'm constantly focused on where to put my tongue, and trying to make sure I don't lick a finger.

Try being enclosed in an MRI machine when you have all your weight on the part they want to get images of. I just started counting down from ten to keep myself from moving.

My dentist has a TV. Although sometimes its hard to hear over the sound of their tools.

My dentist lets my have my headphones on, and if they need something they just give me a tap.

Most of them chat with me and pause at the time an answer is expected. It works well for cleaning appointments but I can see how it maybe a problem during big long procedures.

Mostly when I'm at the dentist I'm just trying to stay calm and not have a panic attack.
