Small talk feels like buffering in real life annoying at first, but sometimes it loads into a genuinely great conversation.

Best description I've ever came across. It's usually an intro to see if someone is willing to dive deep, sometimes.

I love it. You can get new perspectives on life in a few mins or new recipes or recommendations for new stores or restaurants.

I love your outlook on it. That’s wonderful to hear

I enjoy both deep meaningful conversations & small talk :) Small talk gets you life insights & deep meaning conversations help to expand your horizon on life & to get closer with people you vibe with :)

It can be fun to chirp around like birds about nothing

I hate it because I suck at it.

LittleKitty235 Mar 30, 2026 +3
You are overthinking it then. Small talk isn't about saying anything impressive or interesting, it's about just showing the other person you want to talk or not. If they don't want to it isn't because your bad at small talk, it is just that people usually have stuff going on.

We much prefer big talk. Or politics, religion, sports. Maybe a dirty joke, some gossip. But small talk really sucks the piss out us.

Such a cool response! :-D I genuinely blew air out of my nose rapidly... Best laugh I had in days!

Mosh83 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Depends. If I am deep in thought , I'd rather be.
2
PlasticEducational81 Mar 30, 2026 +2
i like how you put that.

I used to be bad at it but years of forced corporate interactions has made me rather good. I feel like its low stakes, you just mention the weather, ask them about something specific about their life, and its over. Its nice not to talk about anything deep or thought provoking,
2
athoszet Mar 30, 2026 +1
I always thought that the "weather" thing is more like a joke by now haha, but is it really still a thing? Just grown adults standing in a circle, talking about weather... Feels so weird!
1
Commercial-Manner256 Mar 30, 2026 +2
Just make it not about the weather. PLEASE!
2
kitsune1604 Mar 30, 2026 +2
I don't know how to respond
2
athoszet Mar 30, 2026 +1
Awww, I would small talk the sh\*t out of you! People who don't know how to respond are the best, so "real" and understandable! :-) Because no one knows haha, so there's no need to feel awkward!

I hate it when people expect to only hear positive small talk. No, I’m not “fine” or “good.” I’m going to give an honest answer, if you’re not ready for it, stop asking.
2
athoszet Mar 30, 2026 +1
Oh yeah, got you! I also like honesty, even in small talk! ;-) Recently, I started a small talk (classic 2 male strangers in a room) saying "I saw the biggest spider ever yesterday!", and he goes "I love spiders. I even have pet spiders!" and I went "That's horribly, disgusting, I hate it!" and we laughed :-) Good day!

I love when people just start some random conversation like we’re friends. When it’s something completely random and we don’t even have to greet each other is the best
2
athoszet Mar 30, 2026 +1
Me too!!! I do that all the time! Either a joke, or a weird question.... Best way to get pass the weird semi-silent awkwardness haha

PlasticEducational81 Mar 30, 2026 +1
same. this is the typical style of how it goes down for me- person somewhere i happen to be that has meandered all to close: "i love your boots, but i'm not brave enough to pull something like that off" me: "yeah my husband tried to kill me the other day but i woke up this morning pretty dissapointed he couldn't have put enough queen annes lace in the milk i used to make my matcha latte. i just needed one more sip to make that gulp big enough but NOOO of course not, the guy only kills bugs half way. what a sadist. so, do you have any friends that are sadists that needs a date? i dont know any humans personally but i am looking into a divorce, but im also mildly suicidal so i just want to get it right this time, you know?" ...... :::::BIG DYING CRICKETS:::: "ok cool have a great day. i hope they get your order right and that no one poisons it, thats one hell of a headache if its not dosed right!"

I’m more into big talk, I got a personality, if a guys first instinct is to ask me how my day is instead of all the material I’ve given him as talking points, he’s likely kinda dull for me. But I can work with dull if he’s hot
2
athoszet Mar 30, 2026 +1
I can definitely tell you got personality! :-) I love the direct way you talk haha, you remind me of this friend of mine who just always seems like he's running out of time for some reason :-D But I have to say... It feels like when I say "small talk" you immediately imagine a guy hitting on you...?
1
aniwynsweet Mar 30, 2026 +2
Ahh it’s just the only small talk I engage in, so it’s all I could think of example wise 🫣

l enjoy chatting about eveeyday tings, sharing my thoughts,or just having a casual chat-nopressure,no need to deliberately solve any problems,lt's about relaxed conversation and sharing my feelings with others. What l hate most is endless arguments, pointless quarrels,or creating trouble just to stir up conflict, with sarcasm and irony,l especially despise those who beat around the bush and don't speak directly.

hate the awkward silence

Bada11e Mar 30, 2026 +2
So how’s the weather today?
2
Natural-Cap6928 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Small talk feels like loading screen dialogue sometimes charming, sometimes unbearable, but you’re stuck until the main quest conversation starts.

I_am_sharnistar Mar 30, 2026 +1
It’s useful for networking
1
LittleKitty235 Mar 30, 2026 +1
Networking is small talk mixed with shop talk. My personal hell. I'd rather someone drive a red hot spike though my hand. At least then I'd have a whole small talk conversation ready about my cool ass scar

Successful-Shopping8 Mar 30, 2026 +1
I just hate socializing in general

Did you see that ludicrous display last night? The thing about Arsenal is, they always try to walk it in

i dislike whomever invented and so on to whomever perpetuated such a disservice to man kind. dont like to be slightly uncomfortable for whatever reason otherwise? who cares? well too many people thats who; but i've eased out of life for the most part anyway and the only small talk i have is with furniture and other inanimate objects. even single celled organisms will hear it from me. i know what youre thinking though, probably: "man this idiot must have just been kicked out of life". nope. i quit. it was me. ((& thank g for pick up and delivery))

I have no issue with small talk from a stranger, especially if they’re a sweet elderly person. The only time I dislike small talk is if I’m getting to know someone. I feel like small talk should be reserved for when you’re just passing by and have to interact for a little bit.

papayameow Mar 30, 2026 +1
I hate when I feel held hostage and can’t leave. Im pretty good breaking most conversations but my close coworker bulldozes all social cues and shouts my name as I turn away remembering something else “important” to tell me. Another coworker also small talks with me 45 minutes straight and mentions relevant information only as I walk away. Thats why i dont leave my desk

ConcertEmpty420 Mar 30, 2026 +1
small talk can be super awkward but it’s also a good way to break the ice. some people are just really bad at it tho, makes it painful.

hyrulian_princess Mar 30, 2026 +1
I hate everything about small talk
1
luv_heidii Mar 30, 2026 +1
I don’t like it because I feel like it’s only happening out of necessity to break an awkward silence. Sometimes you can get a little laugh out of it, but typically it just ends up being the same small talk conversation every time
