What experience lost its charm once it became expensive?

Going to places like Disney World I guess  Places that attracted wonder but are now way too expensive also works, just in general

Disneyland had a brief stint of being intentionally accessible to almost everyone, before the entire company was slowly transformed into money sucking vampire that involves as little creativity and risk as humanly possible. It is now a full fledged black hole of greed.

Not very surprising — Still, people go there, the only way to get them down is to stop giving them attention

They don't know any better. But I do think there's a limit to the amount of half-assed cheapo bullshit that people will pay good money to endure, so the company will eventually either have to do a massive u-turn or find themselves out of business. It's been in business longer than most already, it was just originally run by somebody who was almost pathologically obsessed with giving people the highest possible quality for the most accessible possible price.

That is true, honestly just like with Disney itself, I don't see it surviving another decade or two at this rate

Me either. The greedy bastards running it now are trying to take humanity for all it's worth before they run it into the ground.

Is Disneyland not magical anymore? I went when I was a kid and now I have 2 daughters, not quite old enough, but I was planning to take them next year. I enjoyed peter pan and Alice in wonderland, and the teacups, haunted mansion, the submarine, splash mountain and tom sawyers island, and the boat that goes through the mini villages. I'm sure they added some stuff, but what changed? Do you have to pay for rides now or something? I tried looking it up but I literally can't find anything.

I remember when **camping** was the "broke college student" getaway. You’d grab a $20 tent from Walmart, a pack of hot dogs, and some c**** beer, then head into the woods to smell like woodsmoke for two days. Now? If you want a decent spot, you have to book 6 months in advance on a website that crashes harder than Ticketmaster. Then you get there and you're surrounded by $150k Sprinter vans and "Glamping" pods that cost $300 a night. It’s not an escape anymore; it’s just suburban housing with more mosquitoes and worse Wi-Fi.

barbershops hit me the hardest - used to be 15 bucks for a solid cut and now these places want 60+ for the same fade. miss those old school guys who didnt need to call it a "grooming experience"

Basic crew cut still $15 in my town. $5 tip and you're out the door. The guy I go to does them all day long.

If your haircut is just a basic crew/buzz cut it's worth just buying a $30 razor and learning how to do it yourself.  I started doing it 10 years ago, so at this point it's saved me a couple thousand dollars.  Plus I can just clean up my cut anytime I want.

Just look up one of the hundreds of YouTube videos that show you how to do it.  It takes some practice but once you get the hang of it it's easy. I will suggest the first time you do it,  set a guard with a longer length than what you actually want so that you can clean it up without cutting anything too short.

Camping. It used to cost $5 for the site and less than $100 for the food for the trip, tents were a dime a dozen too.

What, would you say, is the median site cost now?

I went to go see this musical after I saw Tick Tick Boom. $75 a seat for me and my gf. First time trying something “fancy”. Nothing awakens you to how much of a peasant you actually are when hours of your labor gets you seats so trash that you can’t see the f****** stage of the guy in front of you chuckles. While a theater full of people are sat in front of you with seats starting triple the cost of yours We left at intermission.

Travel. It lost its magic the moment ‘hidden spots’ became expensive tourist checklists.

Just about any top tier sport i imagine... im in Australia and AFL is expensive and more gimmick than substance

Yeah AFL is expensive these days (I go a fair a bit), my hack is that I always buy kids tickets lol But man I've been to games at Chelsea and Newcastle United and it's on another level of ridiculousness....and the crowds are shit now (went in 2022 & 2024) compared to when I went in the late 90s, much more sterilised and less proper fans. But yeah your point is valid

PC Gaming This doesn’t apply to all games but there’s undeniably a trend of triple A titles costing more and more and microtransactions being everywhere. Also the hardware prices make high end gaming increasingly inaccessible. But I personally I found myself enjoying some indie titles a lot recently, so it hasn’t lost its Charme completely.

Meta2048 Mar 28, 2026 +1
PC gaming is still the cheapest per hour entertainment you can get.  I can buy a $10 game and even if it's short, it will still be at least 2 hours long.   How many other things can you do that are that c**** for that amount of entertainment?

britishmetric144 Mar 28, 2026 +1
As an aside, the really sad fact is that the number of people who gain anything from these things becoming more expensive is **much**, **much** smaller than the number of people who lose out from that.

Kinda silly how people pay 400-500 for a bland modern table when an 18th century one can be bought for peanuts
