Clean as you cook, dishes right away and 10 minutes every day walking through the house picking things up/organizing. So much better than hours of cleaning on one day

geekgirl114 Apr 3, 2026 +28
Yeah... looking at the whole thing about all the stuff you have to clean is exhausting and overwhelming. But getting it to 10 minute chunks is better

Also prep *everything* before you start to actually cook. That means cut the vegetables, trim the meat, measure out any dry and wet ingredients, find the spices/utensils/mitts you need, etc. All before **anything** hits the heat. You might think you're great at multi-tasking. You are wrong. Eliminate as many concurrent tasks as possible and cooking becomes much, much easier.

I've recently been diagnosed with arthritis in my lower lumbar so the house isn't as clean as I'd like it to be. Mostly because doing anything for an extended period of time hurts my back like mad. Gonna try this lil 10 minute thing. Appreciate the tip!

10 min a day sounds so real

BrainttS Apr 3, 2026 +107
Do the most important task first thing in the morning. When you tackle the most unpleasant or most important task first thing in the morning, the rest of the day feels much easier and more productive.

Just drink more water easy advice until you are constantly running to the bathroom

maninatrexshirt Apr 3, 2026 +14
I've always preferred  Have water nearby wherever you are sitting.  That way any time your focus breaks, or you feel even a bit thirsty, you don't supress it because getting up is inconvenient. Having a water bottle next to my desk has helped a ton.

chalk_in_boots Apr 3, 2026 +2
If you carry a bag daily, get a bottle that fits in it. If you have plenty of space get a big one, not much room, get a little one. Simply having your bottle with you means you're reminded to drink, saves you money on bottled water, and if it's a hot day you're not searching for somewhere to get water because you've already got it.

I’m a doc and I tell my pt they need to drink enough water to be annoyed with how often they need to pee
9
pearldonnet Apr 3, 2026 +19
If your urine looks like clear water, you're over hydrated
19
Boomshank Apr 3, 2026 +7
Yup. I absolutely HATE the "drink more water" top tip. Well, how much water do I currently drink? You don't know? Then why are you recommending I drink more?!?
7
alebarco Apr 3, 2026 +11
There's a lot of people who drink like 2 glasses of water for the entire day, or just drink whatever else Instead of water, it's common sense for some people, and it's almost blasphemy to others

Be in the present… Sounds silly, basic even… But the only time you have power to change things is NOW.

I have 3 kids, so pick your battles. Sometimes the screentime fight isn't worth it. A few extra minutes to let them finish their video or game saves 30 minutes of crying and whining.
44
maninatrexshirt Apr 3, 2026 +28
Word.  But seriously telling the kids "this is the last episode" or "you can play until dinner" works so much better than saying "5 more minutes" kids have no feel for time and don't understand why too much TV is bad, they do understand they can't watch while they are having dinner.

To regularly ask myself, "What do I need right now?" There is quite often something very obtainable that improves my day--different shoes, a shower, or even brushing my teeth. Admitting that I'm hungry and should eat a real meal instead of five snacks in the next hour. Sometimes it turns out I need a break, and other times I realize that I'm done resting and ready to do other things.

I hate saying it but man “you’re depressed just go outside and have a walk”. It most definitely undermined true depression. But going out and walking really does help. It’s like one of these right for all the wrong reasons type of things.
68
JulieJoy Apr 3, 2026 +17
This is why I spend damn near every moment I can outside. If not, with windows open. I will add, getting a bird feeder by a widow. I get such joy from the little critters outside.

sexytimeforwife Apr 3, 2026 +7
Apparently vitamin D helps produce anti-depressant regulators. Not sure if it was serotonin or something else. Wishy washy answer, but I read something along those lines a while ago.

PatienceFar1140 Apr 3, 2026 +1
I lived in Canada and got seasonal affective disorder from the lack of sunlight in winter Also fun, it's so far north that even if you get sunlight in winter it's not strong enough to produce vitamin d. I took those tablets year round and it made a huge difference!
1
OhScheisse Apr 3, 2026
This. Especially important if you gave darker skin I'm dark skinned and always felt "off" because I live in a foggy city. So when I started spending more time in the sun and taking vitamin D. It helped a ton.

I had a bout of depression during college. Out of frustration I just started running because I thought I could “run away” from my problems. Turns out fresh air and a bit of sunlight helped me a lot.

Max out your pre-tax write offs, it’s literally free money, I thought it was stupid until I tried it.

Hmm, I buy personal tools for work all the time. I should probably start keeping track.
4
yooter Apr 3, 2026 +1
The standard deduction is relatively high, I think like 15k per person. So add your tools, your medical expenses, your mortgage interest + other things together. If it is higher than the standard deduction you may want to consider itemized deductions on your taxes. I am not a tax professional but if that $15k number is something you think you can “beat” you may want to talk to one.
1
MrQuojo Apr 3, 2026 +2
I used to think that but pre-tax write offs lowers your taxable income. Let’s say you make 200k, You can max out your 401k, medical FSA/HSA, work Transportation account and Medical and dental to push your taxable income down to 170. That puts you in a lower tax bracket and thusly lowers your taxable income. But the trick is you still made the money. It just seems like you didn’t. Here’s an article on it: [pre tax write offs](https://americanfidelity.com/blog/supplemental/pre-and-post-tax-benefits) HSA/FSA The amount of things you can buy with your HSA/FSA is criminal lol. From hand lotions to protein powders, to male and female birth control. I have night sweats induced insomnia Im using it to by a premium bed and mattress topper. I wear reading glasses, im buying AI reading glasses with augmented reality screens. THERES LITERALLY A STORE ONLINE AND IN AMAZON specifically designated to be used for those funds. Transportation: If you live in a major metropolitan area and commute to work: transportation spend accounts are your friend. And you can use it on any commuter expense including ride shares that pickup multiple people 401K: If your company does 401k matching, it’s literally free money. And trust me you literally will not feel the difference because of how tax brackets work, either you’re paying it in taxes or paying yourself. Personally I’d rather keep the money for myself. I could probably explain this better but I’m tired and the link is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Always be early or at least on time because you are just self centered and don't care about anyone but yourself when you're always late. Someone told this to me when I was always 5 minutes late, and I've never intentionally been late since that point.

Make your bed after you get up. Don't need hospital corners, just pull the sheets up and make it look nice. Only takes a couple seconds, and makes it so much nicer to come back to.

The best way to lose weight is calories in, calories out. My doctor told me that 30 years ago and I just got annoyed, like “give me some advice I can use!!” Well, I finally tried it last year and it worked.

You yourself know about it.. A lot of my seniors told me this same thing when I asked them advice about studies and career and I thought they were probably just too lazy to explain it, but, now that I've faced it, I honestly think it's true. Cause there are a lot of things to think about and we like to follow people's advice while giving less priority to our own. We then regret later on for not following our own heart's advices because sometimes even our immature heart has the best advice. So every time something happens, I ask myself...

El limpió no es el que limpia pero si no el que no ensucia (a clean person is not one who cleans but one who doesn’t make a mess) - my mom always said this and I thought it was silly until I lived on my own and got to learn real quick that tackling messes or any cleaning as you go is much better than having to do a ton of cleaning/laundry etc in one go 😅

When you're feeling depressed, exercise really helps. Granted it's not a *cure* for clinical depression. But on days you have too much anxious energy or meds just aren't cutting it, getting moving hits basically every part of your brain that you need to combat depression symptoms. It gets you out of a sedentary state physically and mentally, physically warms you, gives you something positive to concentrate on, and if the weather is decent it gets you outside and under the sun to stimulate vitamin D production. Plus with the energy you burn, you'll sleep better instead of laying awake dreading. As long as you exercise within your limits (instead of overdoing it because you haven't worked out in forever) you'll feel refreshed and fulfilled once you stop. Setting reasonable goals and achieving them and tracking your progress also releases dopamine and creates structure, which can help with feeling directionless or emptiness.
