What genre of movie is this?

Posted by AggressiveMap2288

My partner and I were talking and we settled on the fact that I definitely have a type of movie that I love. A grand adventure, with the right mix of action, romance, fantasy, and a little over the top humor at times. Think: Princess Bride Pirates of the Caribbean The Mummy Indiana Jones The Librarian These movies seem to have just the perfect amount of stakes to make them entertaining, while still being lighthearted. What do we call this genre? Can it be defined? Also, why haven't they made more movies in this vein in a while (I'm open to suggestions!)

Swashbuckling was actually the word I was looking for when I was trying to describe it to him!

Well glad I could help

Here's a bit of trivia for you. A swashbuckle was a weight worn of a swordsman's belt, opposite from where the sword was sheathed, to balance out the load, so you wouldn't be made uncomfortable by the sword's heft dragging at you on just one side.

Mask of Zorro is definitely on the list!

The Fall and Stardust are a specific kind of fantasy adventure in the mold of The Princess Bride.

I did used to watch Stardust when I was younger and remember enjoying it.

The Fall!!! If you haven’t seen it, OP, don’t walk, run!🏃🏻‍♀️ It’s actually based on a movie called Yo-Ho-Ho, so definitely has some swashbuckling to it.

Always nice to see a callback to '93 Musketeers. I've been looking for it forever. I'll just add Captain Blood to the list, which should be a gateway to all the other classics found online

I think Romancing The Stone checks a lot of those boxes

I haven't seen it! Maybe I should try it. Still, I wish they would make some new movies of this type.

Also recommend the sequel the Jewel of the Nile. Not sure what the consensus is on this as a sequel but I loved it

Not maybe.  Watch it.   Lost City is a new one in this genre.

BootleggedBart Mar 28, 2026 +4
That's the adventure film, the swashbuckler being more specific subcategory

AggressiveMap2288 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I feel like not every adventure film fits this criteria though. Swashbuckler definitely. That was actually a word I was looking for

All of them are adventure films primarily. Some of them are adventure/comedies, and Pirates is definitely fantasy adventure, with a strong emphasis on comedy.

Hook maybe?

Jungle Cruise

A well-rounded adventure is probably the most accurate description of these films: Most contain a little bit of everything.
2
AggressiveMap2288 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Yeah I guess. I feel like "adventure" is too broad most of the time though. There is just a certain element some of these movies have that others don't.

You can’t really label that flavor a genre though:  I know what you mean when you say these films have a connection, but I dont think it’s possible to before production is even green-lit to aim-and-target that sweet spot.  If it were a formula to follow, obviously there’d be many more examples.

If anyone swings on a whip or rope or sword fights it is an Errol Flynn swashbuckler or neo-swashbuckler (aware that it is a swashbuckler). Anything by Douglas Fairbanks or Errol Flynn. https://www.listnook.com/r/classicfilms/comments/ijfxky/best_swashbuckling_films/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I've never heard that before! Though I probably will get hate for this, I don't think I've watched the "classic" movies in the genre. Most of mine were during my childhood, late 90s-00s. It seems as though there was a bit of a heyday of them being made around that time.

The revival. Robin hood and romancing the stone in the 1980s. With Indiana Jones. The originals are of their era, segregated and sexist. I think Hollywood was built in westerns and swashbuckling and then colorama musicals. We're just repeating the cycle.

I whole-heartedly recommend watching [The Adventures of Robin Hood.](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029843/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_7_nm_1_in_0_q_the%20adventures%20of%20robin%20hood) It holds up well.

You ok with B&W classics? I'll just recommend Captain Blood, (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0026174/), but an online search will give you more. Oh hmm, *maybe* the Gena Davis starrer *Cutthroat Island* for some fun schlocky adventure!

It’s not a perfect fit, but I bet you’d like Galaxy Quest!

Stardust might scratch your itch.

Lost City and Bullet Train have this vibe. Just scanned the responses and didn't see them yet.

AggressiveMap2288 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Bullet Train is such a good movie. It has some of the same elements, but I think it's a bit too intense or high stakes to quite fit. I really wanted to like Lost City. I may need to revisit it

A romp?

green_meklar Mar 28, 2026 +1
Princess Bride I would classify as more of a straight-up parody. The others are all...lighthearted action-adventure movies, I guess?

Former_Matter49 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Big Trouble in Little China is a perfect example to me, while hilariously inverting the "white savior" trope.

OrpahsBookClub Mar 28, 2026 +1
You might like Secondhand Lions, which is about halfway between Princess Bride and Big Fish. Also check out the old Sinbad movies, like the Seventh Voyage of Sinbad.

lxnaasonxl Mar 28, 2026 +1
omg those are literally my comfort movies!! i call them "swashbuckling adventures with hot people" lol. wish they'd make more that aren't just remakes or sequels.
1
AggressiveMap2288 Mar 28, 2026 +1
I like that title! Yes, I would also love some new ones that are original. Jungle Cruise was close...but not quite there. That's been the most recent one for me.

Rosebud_apothocary Mar 28, 2026 +1
Definitely try The Lost City

Trike117 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Fantasy Adventure They still make them, frequently. Whether you’ll like them is a different matter. Many superhero movies fall under this category. *Ant-Man* *Captain America: The First Avenger* *Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves* *Everything Everywhere All at Once* *Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle* and *Jumanji: The Next Level* *The Lone Ranger* *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings* *Spirited* *Uncharted*
1
AggressiveMap2288 Mar 28, 2026 +2
I can't do superhero movies, for some reason they just don't hit the same. Uncharted was decent.

Peter Pan movie, aka for kids who never grew up

I don't know if that's an insult or not. Lol but I think it does fit. These were definitely all childhood favorites.
