We're in the midst of a Shameless re-watch and it got me to thinking....what happened to Emmy Rossum after she left Shameless?
Looking at her IMDB, it seems pretty sparse since she left the show.
Is she focused more on different passions outside of film/television or did that entire "I want to be paid the same as William H. Macy get her a label of hard to work with? Or maybe...she was just hard to work with?
Very curious to why her star didn't take off post-Shameless as the show was never the same without her.
She also created and starred in her own show, Angelyne, after shameless.
Also married Sam Esmail and had babies so maybe took time to focus on herself and family.

She did have baby but also I think she just got tired of the whole Hollywood thing you know? Like after doing shameless for so many years maybe she wanted to step back and do her own projects on her terms instead of taking whatever studios were offering
I remember reading somewhere that she was doing some directing work and producing stuff but yeah her imdb looks pretty quiet compared to before. Could be she's just being more selective or maybe the industry thing about wanting equal pay did hurt her opportunities - that stuff can follow actors around unfortunately
Either way good for her if she's focusing in family and doing what makes her happy instead of just chasing the next big role

The other way around; Hollywood (and certain people in it) got tired of her diva behavior.
I know a fairly big actor who worked with her and he effectively had to stage an intervention mid project because everyone was getting sick of her antics and demands to the point people were going to walk off set.
Although her parents split when she was young and she was raised solely by her mother, She comes from a wealthy extended family in NY and acts like a princess. I think it did her no favors in the long run.

Emma Kenney who potrayed her younger sister has stated that working with Emmy Rossum on Shameless was difficult, noting that the set became more positive after Rossum left in season 9. Kenney expressed having a lot of love for her but felt anxious on set due to their tense relationship, noting that if Rossum had a bad day, "everyone on set had to have a bad day".

I always felt that was the cause of Emma’s comments. It felt like the other actors acted as surrogate parents backstage, but Emmy Rossum kept to herself and focused on her work. You can meet someone that normally is a jerk but they happen to be in a great mood that day and treat you nicely so you're impression is they're awesome. Or you could meet someone that normally is very nice and maybe their dog died that morning and they snap at you and you think they're a jerk.

It’s probably not an insane place. Since someone mentioned seeing her on the Upper East Side of Manhattan I’ll just share my own personal experience of going to the equinox gym on 85th and 3rd alongside Alysia Reiner (from Orange is the New Black) and Katie Couric (from the Today Show).
The town I grew up in in suburban CT is quite known for celebrities - Demi Moore and Bruce Willis, Harvey Fierstein, Robert Vaughn all lived there, my brother saw Brendan Fraser around town, David Letterman ate breakfast every day at a restaurant on Main Street. People just know not to bother them, no one takes photos or asks for autographs. It’s just an unspoken rule that enables famous people to want to be there.
Sharing this latter part because the UES neighborhood in Manhattan is very much like a quiet small town. Very few tourists, and a lot of people know each other and run into each other. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the salon is the one I went to on 86th street because it was really like a small town and people were really respectful of spotting celebs. Maybe it isn’t but a lot of celebrities will just go to normal places - I mean Katie Couric of all people didn’t need to go to a shared gym at all but she chose to.

The payment negotiation thing for sure soured a lot of studios on her.
Deep into Shameless she wanted equal pay to William H Macy since she was pretty clearly the main character. Showtime agreed and bumped her pay to match. Then she said she wanted back pay starting from the start of the show. Macy got paid more because he was the big name for the show. If I remember they even agreed to that and then she wanted more money and they refused so she left the show.

Just because she's the main character doesn't mean she should be paid the same as a two time Emmy, four times SAG w***** who's 36 years older with a lot more experience than her.

The back pay thing was the straw that broke it for sure. She was also a big name after her phantom of the opera years. Not a WHM draw, but still brought eyes to the show. When it was successful it made sense to pay her out as a mc. Could argue by the end, a few of them should have been paid out better

if you say so, but that's why studios may be hesitant to hire her. The main star getting up and leaving is, obviously, very bad for the production.

If we're being real, Shameless got pretty stale by season 5-6 when they just kept going in circles with a lot of the characters, well before the Fiona character was written out, so Rossum was right to ask for similar pay to Macy, especially considering how she was tied and centered for every single plot, while Macy was just Frank being Frank.
Now, I understand the insane real-life difficulties that are faced when trying to escape poverty, but by the time Lip is bounced from college, it becomes clear that the rest of the show will give zero possibilities for any happy endings. And maybe that is realistic, but you're telling me *none* of these ridiculous scrappy survivors ever really found a way to escape, with 90% of the cases being from crazy over the top self sabotage? I don't buy it.
Here's an [old writeup](https://www.listnook.com/r/shameless/s/OXSiAXv4C4) about Lip and how they slowly moved away from everything they had already established about his character in the first seasons. Literally every character is a ridiculous self-saboteur in the most ridiculous ways, it's funny for a few seasons and then it's just 8 more seasons of the same.

It’s tragic because that whole storyline is actually really good when it was all said and done. Unfortunately you get Season 5 and things are basically back to the status quo and the show just spins its wheel with the constant self sabotage. It became exhausting.

My wife and I got to season 5 and started to question if we wanted to keep watching. I looked up episode summaries because I didn't care about spoilers at that point, read the sentence >!"Chuckie is arrested"!< out loud to my wife and she immediately said "We're done." And that was that.

Same. Wife and I stopped watching after like season 5. Seemed like it was rinse, wash, repeat over and over and over again.
* Family member does something stupid.
* They work hard and start to get their life back on track.
* They make one tiny mistake, dominoes start falling and they're back to square one.
* Frank is an idiot and they vow he's no longer a part of their life anymore. Spoiler: he's still a part of their life.

Shameless always felt like the writers only had access to the previous season and nothing before. Like Carl would go from being a drug dealer to a cop over three seasons, nothing about it made any sense.

Which is seriously ironic given the OG UK Shameless had 11 seasons worth of plot content that the US writers totally abandoned after the first couple of seasons.

I mean, Gallagher antics were over the top, if they weren't it wouldn't be a popular dramady in both the UK and the U.S., it would just be what life is like for millions of families born into generational poverty. For every person that makes it out, I'm sure there are many more who don't.
I get wanting Lip to succeed and have a happy ending, but the way his story played out is in line with what happens to so many people who are born gifted with intelligence or other talents, but don't have the support they need to thrive, due to never having a stable homelife. Ultimately, even being a genius couldn't save him, the pull of his upbringing was just too strong.
21
CrossoverEpisodeMemeApr 16, 2026

I don't need any of them to actually have a happy ending to enjoy the show, but a happy ending for a few of them would have been a nice balance to the rest of the story. There are times where the show leans worryingly close to the message of "*people in poverty are actually stuck being poor due to their own repeatedly terrible decisions*," which I don't think it intended to do, but someone making the argument that it did contain that message wouldn't have a hard time building their case.
Every time a Gallagher got a lucky break in the show, that character would follow it up with the WORST possible next step (and sometimes it wasn't even available to take without writer intervention) in an attempt to f*** it up. Like I said, I understand poverty is a vicious cycle, but we're shown that these are crafty, clever survivors who find a way to make shit work under the worst conditions and always manage to scrape by. Then when they finally get lucky, it's like their whole backstory disappears and they are suddenly completely stupid to the point of helplessness, and not in some l****** w***** blowing money way, but like a "how do you get through a day without dying?" type of way.

It was hard to watch the bad writing after a few great seasons. Every character ended up having 2 modes: Bad decision or no decision, both led to unnecessary drama.

She still works, led a miniseries a few years ago, was in the Tom Holland Apple series as well, but yeah its a little sparse. As others have pointed out, she seemingly did pretty well with her Shameless money AND has young kids. So we don't really know for sure.
That said, there've been rumors for years even before the payment negotiation thing happened that she was difficult to work with. Unclear how true that is, but it persisted pretty much all of Shameless's run.

I only share it when I personally know people who worked with the actor or have myself had business with them.
For exactly that reason, you never know by rumors.
FWIW - some friends were writers on shameless and it was normal for Rossum to cuss you out if she didn’t like a scene or her requests were not met. She’d confront you both publicly and privately and is a very physically animated angry person - so she comes across more threatening than she means. But along with Macy, she basically \*was\* shameless for most of its early years and nothing could be done about it.

It's a valid thing to heat check it against but part of why that was such an effective 'smokescreen' phrase is because 'difficult to work with' is a very common label for the many Hollywood folks who are, unfortunately, difficult to work with.

Meh, the way she left I felt fine with. I liked the "I am now going to go live my life and figure out who I am outside of this family and place". I do think they should have ended the series there.

There are some actors that love the craft. There are some that love the money. If you get the latter and dislike the former, or grow to dislike it, why bother chasing it?

Nobody gets into acting "for the love of money", because when you are starting out, there are no money to be had and that remains to be the case for 99.9% of actors until they finally stop doing acting or just die. Some actors become successful and then just stop giving a shit about acting, but nobody starts out that way.

Sometimes I wonder what's up with their drive and decision making, especially the ones who have huge television success so their work schedule and income is already very consistent.
Like Alyson Hannigan. She had Buffy for 7 seasons, with the last one giving her a quarter of a million dollars per episode (22 episodes). Just from that alone she was financially independent. Then during that run she also had the American Pie movies. And then from Buffy almost straight into a decade of How I Met Your Mother.
She also married and had kids. So she had consistent work, gained legendary cult following from Buffy and American Pie and money for life and more. Yet if you look at IMDB she's been in some absolute dogshit projects during and after all this TV success.
Love for the arts and all, but you'd think it was already enough to just chill out and do other stuff lol.

From what I can gather, she took some time off to have a couple of kids and it seems that she had an ongoing rep as a diva. Not just the pay thing but before and after that. And then there were the strikes etc.
Seems a bit like she was someone who did pretty well in one role who thought that it was going to launch her into a big career but the personality and skill didn’t match that goal

I hear she has a very bad reputation of being horrible on set, and that shit doesn't fly as well anymore now.
Hell, James Gunn said on a podcast that he called people that worked with actors he hadn't worked with on Superman just to find out if they were dicks before he hired them. Hollywood doesn't seem to want those people anymore.

Re: the hard to work with rumors. There’s a video of John Wells (creator of ER/Shameless) where he describes being hesitant to hire Emmy because he had heard from other people that she was hard to work with and a bit of a diva. Then you had the Emma Kennedy stuff on Shameless and that kind of reputation has stuck around.
Obviously take with a grain of salt but I imagine that reputation + Shameless being such a hit for so long limited some of her career opportunities. Plus her having young children.
