The problem for me is that if I KNEW an expensive $50-$80 t-shirt, for instance, would last many years, I would definately buy it. Problem is I never know.
Quality seems to be dying.

I'm one of those idiots that bought a lot of relatively high quality clothing 10-15 years ago, and now that it's finally starting to get worn out a bit everything is buy as a replacement seems absurdly low quality. That seems to be true universally and not just in clothes.

I have so much regret about not saving more of my tshirts from high school (15-18 years ago). I just found some tees my mom had apparently been holding onto for all these years and they’re all 100% cotton with great graphics. So I’m 32 wearing my 2010 Justin Bieber concert tee again because it’s a genuinely great tee lol. Now everything is thin polyester.

When I was the first child to graduate from college, I hoped to get a big gift from my parents. I really wanted a car.
They gave me a Brother sewing machine. I was **so** disappointed!

I bought an Aeron chair in 2013 and have used it pretty much every day since then. Apart from a little visible wear on the armrests, it looks and feels the same as the day I got it.

They are a great item to buy on the second-hand market. As every part on them is still made and easily replaceable. We have 3 of them that we got for around $400 each and are still in perfect shape.

My wife and I bought Aeron's for our home office in 1998 as part of a group purchase opportunity when my startup was outfitting our whole office.
Last year, we bought new ones - not because they were worn out - because we wanted to pass them down to our kids moving out after college.
Both kids now have the originals, and we have new ones with all the bells and whistles. I replaced a couple of worn armrests on the ones we handed down, but that was literally the only wear issues.
I expect those chairs will make 50 years easily.

I worked at a company that (back in the dot-com era) gave everyone Aeron chairs. My initial reaction was, “What’s the big deal? These are no more comfortable than our old generic desk chairs.” Then I sat on the Aeron 12 hours a day every day and understood. These chairs never get uncomfortable. On my old chair, I would have to get up and stretch my legs every hour or two, and I was pretty worn out by the end of the day. Not with the Aeron. No wonder they were popular with companies that wanted to keep people working away at their desks for crazy hours. I ended up getting one for my home office, because it’s hard to go back to any other chair after getting used to an Aeron.

And then whenever on the rare occasion I have to sit in somebody else's chair and every 20 minutes I'm shifting and moving and my butt starts to hurt, my hips hurt, my back hurts.

I got my used Aeron around 2010 for only $400. It was in incredible condition. After *several* moves (at least 7), it is still holding up great. It currently lives in a teenager’s room…so this is the **true** test to see if it can hold up to their abuse.

When I first moved out on my own, I needed a better vacuum. The dog shed, the vacuum I had was useless. My mom offered to buy me one and I sent her a few links for ones in the $150-$200 range.
She bought me an $850 Miele canister. I was appalled by how expensive it was but she said you’ll spend more replacing the c**** ones than just having this one that can be repaired for life.

I won't use anything other than a Brother machine at this point. Mine is an XR 9550; I sew almost constantly (I make everything from very stupidly large ballgowns, corsets, weird cosplays, regular clothes, and a bunch of smaller stuff for my Etsy), and that thing is a beast. It sews through everything. You can fully dismantle them to clean and repair almost all of the parts yourself, and they are WORKHORSES. The only machine I would recommend above them for sewing through crazy fabrics are the 60s-era Kenmores, which sound like gunfire but punch straight through full grain leather without a thought.
Get good thread (big fan of Gutermann), buy Organ needles, and class 15 metal bobbins, and that machine will last her a lifetime.

I bought a Sonicare about 7 years ago and it's still going strong. I even take it camping and traveling because it has two weeks of use when fully charged.
One of the best little "extras" about mine is that it vibrates after every 30 seconds and then has a double vibrate at 2 minutes. I like that it breaks down the two minutes. I have ADHD and knowing that I spent 30 seconds of equal time in each quadrant really helps me! (A small but excellent feature!)

My mum bought us a set of Meyer saucepans as a wedding present, at the time I didnt fully appreciate it and was underwhelmed (what a brat). Anyway, it was a set of 5, apparently normally priced at £1500, she got them in a sale and had been marked down a couple of times. She paid something around £500 in the end. Every pan I'd had prior to this had fell apart or warped or whatever and had to be thrown out.
I have used one or more of those pans, pretty much every single day since. No word of a lie they still look spanking new. We have been married almost 30 years now. I have no doubt these pans will outlast everyone I know, and all eternity. Probably.

Almost 40 years ago I attended one of those horrific home cooking shows for cookware. I bought in, hook, line and sinker. As a single person, I spent nearly $2000 on Saladmaster pots and pans. They are surgical stainless steel.
I am still cooking on them today and they still look the same as when I bought them. You can burn them black and they clean right up. Totally worth it even though I initially thought “what was I thinking?” My daughter will cook with these for here lifetime.
Post edit: my 90 year old mother reminded me I bought her a set too. So I guess the price was closer to $1000 each. She also sold hers at a garage sale. Ugh

Preheat: drip some water in.
If it sizzles and boils off immediately not hot enough.
If it blasts into a bunch of tiny beads it’s too hot.
If it beads and glides around it’s perfect.
!! DUMP WATER OUT BEFORE ADDING OIL!!
Reduce heat to your cooking needs and add oil as needed.
!!Let the oil come up to temp!! It should glide around the pan smoothly.
Cook food adjust temp as needed.
!! NOT EVERYTHING NEEDS TO BE MAX HEAT ALL THE TIME!!
“But it cooks faster!”
It also burns faster and sticks.
Clean pan immediately when done with warm/hot soapy water.

And sometimes you just need to let the protein sit, it will release of its own when it's "done" and then you can flip it. In case of salmon don't flip it. Let it cook skin down, you can put a lid on when you can move the fish to finish cooking. But be careful when it's 52-54°c it's done.

Stainless buzzwords always crack me up. It's just stainless. 2% more chromium over regular 304 isn't life changing. Regular stainless is fine.
The difference is in the copper/aluminum layer that affects how evenly the pans heat as stainless is a godawful conductor no matter its starship grade surgical-iness.

This is how big purchases are best done. Rather than impulse buy or finance something that isn’t strictly *necessary* and more of a luxury “want” like that, leave it alone at first. They say if you’re still thinking about it a few weeks or months later, you should then go ahead and buy it because it probably won’t be some short-term fixation and you’ll actually get some good use out of it. I’d say 10 years of thinking about it is a strong indicator it was destined for your life at some point.

And it sucks because you can’t reliably “test drive” a lot of mattresses. It’s a partially-educated shot in the dark really.

Ours started failing. started looking at a replacement mixer and decided to hit up the repair route figuring it was already broken. 20 bucks later and a 3 hour tear down and maintenance and it runs like day one again.

> I hear the current day Kitchenaid mixers aren’t as strong as they used to be. Something about them using plastic gears now instead of metal ones
Actually a good thing. When I repair mine (or those of friends/family) I always use the newer polymer gear since it prevents damage to other parts of the drivetrain under high-torque.
Even the newest Kitchenaid mixers are still easy to repair. But all of them also require maintenance, and the lack of maintenance is why most of them fail.
They will last forever **if** you do the required annual maintenance on them.

Biggest item is that you should be replacing the grease in the planetary assembly regularly. If you use it infrequently you could go years without needing maintenance. But, if you use it regularly, you need to clean and repack the grease at least yearly.

There are quite a few videos on YouTube, the KitchnAid mixers are common item to maintain or repair. Just search for grease or lubricate KitchenAid Mixer (you may want to look for your specific model as the instructions will be slightly different).
Also, iFixit has teardown walkthroughs of several models which can be helpful.

It's a sacrificial gear. It's designed to fail under high load to protect the rest of the drive train and it's super easy to replace and very c****.
I've repaired a couple of them for friends.
The main failure point for the really old big ones with the lift up bowl and the fixed head is the gearbox casing. The worm drive thrust bearing pushes on the front of the case and it can eventually crack which I've seen before.
Even in that case, the gearbox case is not expensive to replace.
Kitchenaid mixers are tanks.

An important note to anyone taking this recommendation for speed queen.
This only applies to their commercial grade products, NOT their main product lines. If you buy their most expensive "top of the line" products, it'll be from the home/consumer line and will NOT be as repairable or as durable as their reputation led you to think.
These days their "top" products are really no different then any other big brand.
Also, having bought their commercial line washer - drier set a couple years ago, I'm not super impressed with it's cleaning power. No durability issues so far, so also haven't confirmed how repairable it'll be long run.

Proper 100% wool is so warm. I realized up until this point that all the blends or straight up polyester clothing were just for the vibes and not actually keeping you properly warm. When you frequent extremely cold areas…100% wool is the way to go. It’s just a pain to take care of but once you get used to washing it the right way it isn’t so bad.

Actual wool is a miraculous fiber. Nature figured out nanotech ages ago, biologically. Wool has properties regarding regulation of temperature and moisture that evolved over millions of years. Nothing we can easily fabricate comes anywhere close.
Also, alpaca wool, if you can afford it, is one of the most beautiful, luxurious, and amazing fabrics.

i took a month-long trip to scandinavia in the dead of winter and i was converted to the cult of wool
when you're in that spot of "i'm too hot in my jacket but taking it off is going to kill me", there is literally nothing i have found that will regulate your temps like appropriate wool layers. wool shirt, chunky wool sweater, down jacket (mine is one with a goretex shell) kept me warm in the arctic circle.

My zojirushi is far and away better than trying to cook rice in my insta-pot.
the inner bowl is hand wash only, but clean-up really couldn't be easier, if you have a bunch of left over rice just leave the lid open after turning it off and (at least where I am) the rice dries up and you just need to turn it upside down for it to come out and then just give the inner bowl a rinse and its good to go.

Any good rice maker will be much easier to maintain than an instant pot. The crevices for it being a pressure cooker make it such a pain in the ass to clean. Tiger or Zojirushi will have a removable top piece you basically just have to wipe down. Just remember to actually remove it, I knew someone in school that didn't realize they pop out and there was a ton of mold under it lol

For me it was a kindle paperwhite. This is not exorbitantly expensive to probably most people, but at the time it was to me. I get migraines from reading in low light, reading on iPhone screens, and can’t afford space for books or to own physical copies. Now I have access to thousands of library books on digital, and even splurged and got KU. I’m reading 20 or more books a month. I no longer watch TV, have reduced my migraines by half, and I’m actually enjoying my free time again! Buying something expensive to facilitate the thing that makes me most happy is something I will always make the money for.

I bought my first e-reader, a Sony PRS-505, in 2007 for $500 (about $750 today) with accessories/shipping and it still works. In 2015 my husband bought me a Paperwhite since it’s backlit and I didn’t have to use a clip on light to read with then in 2024 he bought me an updated kindle that has warm light and is water resistant so I would top taking my kindle to the pool in a ziplock back. Now *he* uses my old one, unless something happens I have no desire to upgrade. In fact I would probably be ok still throwing my old kindle in a ziplock bag but in my experience if you’re a reader then an e-reader is a solid investment. It’s easily my most used electronic device, probably even more than my phone!

1. Winter jacket: Buy once, cry once. It will last you a lifetime if you buy a good one. Mine is going strong 20 years on, my mom's is turning 40 and still gets you super warm and repels water like the first day
2. Mattress: You spend a lot of time here, make it worthwhile. It will help with your health, and a proper one, if rotated accordingly, will last you several years.
3. A good vacuum+mop robot: The amount of time saved is incredible. Get one with proper mapping and good reviews, it will last several years and except for the occasional corner cleaning, your back will thank you profusely.
Edit: So I don't have to answer all, here is a summary:
For jackets, you can get a real leather+wool one. Keep it sealed, your grandkinds will be wearing it.
Personally, I got a high end ski jacket from Billabong and my mom has one from Columbia. Someone on this thread said HH, I don't have that brand in my country, so I can't vouch for it. North Face is not good anymore, at least where I live, so avoid that one. Billabong was sold like 3 times, so I can't also vouch for them. Just ask on a skiing sublistnook and be willing to pay the price. You can get awesome deals out of season or in outlets.
But overall, high end ski jackets last a really long time, they are very warm and are waterproof, see what you can get where you live.
For mattress, there are mostly local brands in my country, so any recommendation would be useless. I can say that a very firm foam mattress is usually the best option for a healthier back (this is what all my family has now, back pain improved a lot). Rotate weekly or biweekly at most. Always use a cover and remember to vacuum it from time to time.
For vaccuum+mop robots, I personally own a Xiaomi. Roborock are also solid. Roomba (iRobot) was also bought by a Chinese company last year, so I don't know about them anymore. Just check [https://www.listnook.com/r/RobotVacuums/](https://www.listnook.com/r/RobotVacuums/) and see what fits your needs and what you can find where you live. I could only find Xiaomi from the recommended brands, so that's what I got, and so did my friends, and we are all very satisfied.
Good luck!

My grandmother was pissed when she offered to buy me a ski jacket in high school and I insisted on a $500 Helly Hanson jacket.
Christmas last year I walked into her house wearing the same jacket and asked her if she remembered that ridiculously expensive ski jacket she bought me 15 years ago, and as she was going off about how crazy it was that she spent so much on a ski jacket…I pointed to the one I was wearing and said, “would you still find it crazy if I told you I’m wearing it right now, and wear it on every ski trip I go on?”
She immediately changed her opinion on the matter lol

My mother bought me a beautiful long, almost to the floor 100% wool coat in the 80s. It has a leather shammy in the back. It cost $400 back then which was a lot. But she said this will be the warmest coat you’ll ever have and she was right. The shammy blocks all wind and it’s so warm, even in -30C. I still have it and it still looks brand new.

About 15 years ago I found an ugly ankle-length wool cloak on 75% d******* at a thrift store. I'm into fiber arts and immediately knew how lucky I was.
It's currently serving as the emergency blanket in my car and has saved many a cold person on a camping trip or even on a windy beach. As long as you know how to clean wool, and lanolize every few years, you can have very soft and warm wool for a long long time.

It’s really more about having a sharp knife than a high end knife. I have very high end forged stainless steel knives and carbon steel knives made in Germany, USA, and Japan that I care for meticulously. My $20 victorinox firbox knife is the one I use most frequently. The blade is thinner, the grip is comfortable, and it’s easy to sharpen and keep sharp. Honing (about as often as you cut) and sharpening (when honing doesn’t work anymore) is pretty much all you need. I still use the fancy knives sometimes but I really haven’t come across anything I can’t do with a really sharp basic knife.

This is the only one that mentions speakers. I’m more of a music guy but a 2 or 2.1 channel stereo system of $1000+ will last forever and literally increase enjoyment by multiples. Take most of /r/stereoadvice with a grain of salt but it can be done

A kitchenaid mixer and all the attachments. My husband is a 3 michelin star chef and he swears the space saving aspect alone makes cooking at home enjoyable. Pasta making attachment is fantastic. We process veggies, make dessert, bread...it's amazing and keeps our family from buying processed food.

I'm a very lucky woman. We did have to move across the world several times because being a high level chef is NOT an easy life but I absolutely scored the j****** in terms of an amazing husband and father. Looking forward to when he finally gets around to publishing his cookbook based on cooking for a sick pregnant wife with specific nutritional needs.
But I can NEVER leave dishes in the sink

Recently we got a new washing machine. We have a large family so our washer and dryer get used heavily. At least one load of laundry every day of the week. With all the new 'features' and such I have been increasingly unhappy with the state of modern appliances.
Last month we needed a new washer (again...) and decided to spring for a Speed Queen TC5. Mechanical controls, no lid lock. straightforward. Absolute tank. Does a load of laundry in less than 30 minutes. We love it. Should have gotten one earlier.
