Mushrooms

Antofuzz Apr 1, 2026 +2
It was like a switch flipped. Seemingly overnight I went from hating them to not being able to get enough.

Came here to say this

EvilDan69 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Yeah, I still pass on those. To my credit, that is the only solid NO for foods. So I don't really count as picky. I get why people like them. I don't like the flavour, no matter how they're prepared. Wife also feels the same way about them, which makes it easy. Any time we come across food heavily saturated with mushrooms, my daughter loves mushrooms, so we let her dig in. :)

More for me!

ItsTheoDarby Apr 1, 2026 +44
Onions. spent my entire childhood carefully removing every single visible onion from every meal like a surgeon performing emergency extraction. completely convinced they were ruining everything they touched. now I caramelize them for forty five minutes on a sunday just to put them on a sandwich and feel like a person who has their life together. the transformation is complete and total.

TacoBellPicnic Apr 1, 2026 +13
Onions are the only food I’ve ever literally hated. I cannot eat them in any form, and there’s no way to make them better. If they’ve even been in the same container as other food, that other food is now ruined. They literally taste like an inedible non-food product. Like eating out of the litter box 🤢 My mom thought I was just being a picky eater (which is dumb bc I’m actually a very adventurous eater), but I discovered a while back after a dna test that I have a gene mutation that makes onions non edible.
13
Metroidam11 Apr 1, 2026 +5
I’ve heard about the gene thing but with cilantro . My wife hates onions too, wondering if she has this gene 🤔
5
TacoBellPicnic Apr 1, 2026 +5
Fortunately I do not have the cilantro soap gene. I love that stuff.

I used to eat ketchup and peanut butter sandwiches. I feel like any choices I'm making now are trending in the right direction.
25
LincGames Apr 1, 2026 +13
This has to be a jailable offense😭
13

Peanut butter and tomato jelly 😆

I still hate Olives…
20
RepulsiveRent464 Apr 1, 2026 +7
Me too! Hello fellow olive hater! Everyone I know loves them!
7
h_a_p_p_i_e_r Apr 1, 2026 +4
Certainly hit or miss. There are just so many different kinds of olives, though. As a kid I remember I swore to my parents I’d never ever like them. And my dad replied: “Give it time, your body would crave different foods at different stages of your life”. So yeah now at 30+ I can’t get enough of them olives 🤷‍♂️

Mushrooms. Turned out that my mum (god rest her soul, loved her so much) just wasn't cooking them correctly 😅. I never hated the flavour, just the texture. Have since learnt that you need to cook them until they release ALL of the moisture, then they won't have that awful slimey/spongey texture.
12
fieew Apr 1, 2026 +3
>Turned out that my mum (god rest her soul, loved her so much) just wasn't cooking them correctly To me that applies to most veggies. My mom would boil so many of them till they're a mush. So of course I didn't like like 90% of vegetables cause they were a hardly seasoned mush.
3
VesperVixen2005 Apr 1, 2026 +27
Sushi freaked me out before now I eat it all the time
27
darklinkuk Apr 1, 2026 +4
F*** I wish it still freaked me out it's so expensive and delicious 😭😭😭
4
Comfortable-Pear-973 Apr 1, 2026 +8
Veggies. Especially broccoli. Turns out my mum cooks vegetables like the planes are still flying overhead. VEGGIES DON’T NEED TO BE BOILED UNTIL MUSHY, PAULA.

I tried my first avacado a week ago because the company sent me the wrong fruit. It.. isn't that good imo. felt like a cucumber was pretending to be a banana
9
PARTINlCO Apr 1, 2026 +5
baby u don’t eat it by itself (i mean some people do, yeah) - gotta dress it up with some salt, bit of olive oil, tajin, etc. i have it to accompany rice/chicken, mash it a bit and it’s such a good accompaniment

Onions. As a kid gross, slimy rings of sadness. As an adult caramelized onions are basically candy for grown ups.

Inversion - food I loved as a kid but HATE as an adult... 1: McDonald's... when I was a kid, all McDonald's items had at most 3-5 ingredients, none of which were preservatives or conditioners. The buns were real bread, the meat was real beef, the chicken was real chicken, and the fries were literally potato, flour, sugar, and beef tallow cooked in peanut oil... now, though? Nothing is "real" and every item on the menu has 20-50 ingredients. AND IT TASTES AWFUL! 2: Taco Bell... and Taco Johns... TB had real beef that tasted like fresh ground beef, browned and seasoned... Now it tastes like congealed dog food that a starving mutt won't go near... Taco Johns is still amazing, if you can find it. But the prices... the 59 cent taco is now $2.99 with a +$1.19 "upgrade" if you want a soft shell and +$1.49 if you want anything besides their "seasoned beef". 3: M&Ms... used to be real chocolate wrapped in a sugar shell... Now it's so artificial and packed with double the sugar. Not to mention the 99 cent 16 oz bag I would buy is now a $12.99 14 oz bag. INSANE.
7
empatheticD Apr 1, 2026 +3
I loved Taco Bell as a kid.. definitely doesn’t taste like it used to but man… I still crave it sometimes
3
JaguarOwn154 Apr 1, 2026 +4

They used to be hated until they successfully bred a strain that doesn’t taste bad. So that’s why they are generally well loved.

Brussels sprouts and cauliflower.
6
Dismal_Outcome3730 Apr 1, 2026 +6
Brussels sprouts. Turns out they don’t actually taste like bitter farts if you don’t boil them into a grey mush for 40 minutes. Toss them in olive oil, balsamic, and bacon, then roast them until they’re crispy? Absolute game changer. My parents owed those little cabbages an apology.

Mushrooms and onions for me. I’ll skip full on steak and potatoes dinner for a bowl of sautéed mushrooms all day long. Onions though…why or why did I avoid those in my youth! So many great meals “picked clean” of onions.

Brussels sprouts. My mom boiled them and they were mushy; I roast them with olive oil, sea salt, and coarse black pepper and they are almost a nutty flavor.

Lots of cheeses, I was pretty much an American cheese or cheddar guy. As I've gotten older I can appreciate the complexity of a feta, a blue or some various goat cheeses. Sorry, still don't like a brie.

Artichoke hearts. Turns out they have just about the most food density per calorie you’ll eat, they taste pretty good, and if you don’t get them soaked in oil they’ll help you lose weight.

Green Peas - my mom used to ONLY buy the Le Sueur peas in the cans - absolutely HORRIBLE olive green, soft, mushy, ugh. But since I discovered you can buy green peas frozen or even fresh and not cook them to death - it's an entirely different vegetable.

1

Blue cheese was my absolute nemesis growing up. The smell alone would send me running from the kitchen. Now I love it on salads and buffalo wings. Something about acquiring more sophisticated taste buds as an adult made me appreciate that funky tangy flavor.
1
heatherista2 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Baked potatoes. Tried them as a kid plain. Gross. Now, the potato is a canvas for basically anything you want to pile on top. Mmm.
1
limbodog Apr 1, 2026 +1
Mushrooms, no contest. I didn't even understand why people willingly ate them. But now? I am always fighting the temptation to grow some at home so I can always have 'em handy. Bell peppers get an honorable mention for when I learned that green ones are terrible because they're not ripe. And that ripe ones are actually really good.

Tomato

Tomatoes used to make me cry actual tears at dinner time. I'd pick them out of everything and couldn't even handle ketchup. Now I grow my own heirloom varieties and eat them like apples with just a sprinkle of salt. Amazing how palates change over time.
