PC gaming. It was always more expensive compared to console gaming (especially if you don't plan to connect the PC to your TV and need a monitor), but with the RAMpocalypse and the money a good GPU costs today, it's absurdly expensive now.

It's still a lot cheaper than the 90s at the moment.
Even an entry-level gaming desktop would be around $4000. You can still build something mid-range today for $1700.

Which is just a bad way of looking at it. The base PC package was almost all of that cost(you were paying for a monitor, expensive keyboard, printer). The GPU and extra sticks of RAM were fairly c****. By 2004 there were 500$ builds that played all the classics and new titles.

Sure, but the reason anyone bothered with PC gaming in the 90s was because game consoles had either unfiltered textures with massive texture warping (PS1) or blurry textures you could barely make sense of (Nintendo 64). Oh and the resolution was either 480i best-case scenario or more commonly 240p (576i and 288p respectively for PAL).
But nowadays, we've finally hit good enough with the PS5.
I hope I am wrong, but when the AI bubble bursts, NVIDIA and AMD will return to a wasteland when it comes to PC gaming. Much like Sun Microsystems tried to pay attention to the Unix Workstation market again when the dot-com bubble burst, only to find out that almost everyone had moved to Windows NT and RHEL and the Unix Workstation market didn't exist anymore, because guess what, Windows NT and Linux had become good enough in the meantime.

Whaaaa?
People played on PC because Doom, Diablo, Civ II, EverQuest, Half Life, Age of Empires, Sim City 2000, Warcraft, Quake, Unreal, Monkey Island, Myst, Ultima, Starcraft, C&C, Daggerfall.
You couldn't get anything like the pinnacle of those experiences on console, even there was a port.
And graphics looked a lot better back then because coming from 8-bit graphics was huge step up and the art style, especially console games, was designed for CRT monitors. And year after year graphics improved a step function, so folks weren't exactly worried about graphics.

I disagree.
$20 gets you into GeForce Now on basically any laptop. Sure its not as good as a native gaming could but for just dipping your toes into PC gaming, its absolutely worth trying out and just seeing if its good enough.
You dont HAVE to build a PC or even buy a pre made. You have options.

Nonsense. So many great indie games for <$20 or even <$10. Steam just had a sale with a bunch of 90% discounts. Balatro is currently $12. Silksong is $20. Original Binding of Isaac is $2.50.
Many AAA games also drop heavily within a couple years to less than $20.

To be fair, wanting to buy a project car from the 70s or 80s today is like wanting to buy a car from the 30s and 40s in the 90s. Expect people to ask top dollar even for a rusted out junker due to rarity.
There is a reason a restored classic car from the 30s and 40s was considered a luxury even in the 90s. After 50 years, a car becomes a proper antique with all the rarity this means.
Car enthusiasts should normally be looking at restoring cars from the 2000s and early 2010s today, but those cars feature the same "corporate bland" aesthetic new cars feature today (with rare exceptions), so car enthusiasts find no value in doing so.

Warhammer can be okay as long as you actually paint the models that you get instead of amassing a giant pile of shame.
You can get a starter box, clippers, glue, some paint (you really only need about 8 colors plus some primer) and a couple good brushes for under $250 and spend at least that many hours painting and assembling. Dollar-per-hour it’s cheaper than going to the movies!

my board was $200 used with bindings. boots another $200. used bib and jacket and nice gloves ran me another $300. then I'm good for years on gear. maybe new boots and gloves every couple seasons but that's it.
season pass is 4-500 or so. then if you go like 20-40 times per season it's like at most $50 per day

Right, so that's a $700 startup cost for used equipment you just listed, before passes. Epic or Ikon season passes are a lot more than $500, unless you're military. It's become a prohibitively expensive hobby.

Someone smarter than me can probably articulate this better, but there's a way in which so many hobbies have become commodified that really bums me out. Instead of just being a pastime that people like to do for its own sake, many hobbies have become some weird sort of class signifier. Having the right gear and making the right posts about your trendy hobby does wonders for your personal brand, and you can trade on that for all sorts of things if you know what you're doing.
26
flamingtoastjpnApr 1, 2026
+9
I think the part of it being a class signifier is definitely accurate. The other thing I’ve noticed in my own hobbies is that when you’re starting out it can be difficult to gauge what you actually need.
Like I’ve been playing tennis for 20 years. Almost all of my tennis stuff is old. I know exactly what I need, and rarely feel any desire to buy something new and shiny.
I recently decided I wanted to try photography. Most of the recommendations online are for new and shiny things. I definitely overpaid for equipment. If I knew more I could’ve paid less. Which is kind of weird to think about.

It sucks because that used to be one of the best things about listnook back in the day. Every niche interest had a sublistnook full of genuine enthusiasts who were happy to help newbies and actually had decent advice to dole out a lot of the time. The pivot towards something more like social media and less like old school forums has sapped this place of that kind of energy. Now any given hobby sub is infested with shameless self-promoters and viral marketing bots. There may be a few real heads hanging on in any given place, but not in the same numbers and not with the same influence they once held

Guitar and PC gaming, probably.
Guitar alone, I've spent something like 2k on just getting my old Marshall JCM 900 back up and running (she was in a sad state) Then I wanted some new pedals to add to my board which was probably another 1k. Used Fender strat, 400$. Attenuator, 100$, New cables, picks, strings and other various odd and ends, 300. So in just the last month and half I've spent in total 2800$ to get the old rig up and running again. This is just the start, really.
The fender needs to be refretted, she needs new tuning machines, and new pickups (swapping from ceramic to Alnico), my (my dads) Les Paul needs a refret, a new bridge, nut, and a set up (I'm gonna let a professional handle this one because it's not mine and I want it done correctly. All set and done probably another 2k for just this one guitar) My ESP LTD EC 401FM needs a new bridge. (I did the math, and all of that would be another 3k if not more since the LP is a 79' and requires much more care and attention to detail)
Lets not forget when you don't want to use the big amp, you'll need a smaller one to put in its place, I want to get a Marshall SV20H (plexi studio), but I also want to get the JCM 800 Studio as well. Both cost about 1k each... Pain... lol
Around 8k worth of repairs, new toys.
PC gaming? Have you see the price of things lately? Shit's insane, if you don't already have a gaming rig and want to build a new one you're gonna be throwing money around like no ones business. Thankfully, I haven't had to update anything because I built my current AM5 system 2 years before this whole ass AI price gouging started.
Only things I really need is a new GPU. My 3070Ti is the little card that could, but with the way games have been going an 8GB card isn't going to cut it anymore, unless you're playing older titles or generally don't care if you're playing on the lowest settings, which is basically me, I don't really mind, but I do want to future proof, so I'm looking at picking up a 5070Ti so at least I wouldn't have to worry too much. saw a few at my local Micro Center for about 500ish, so probably gonna do that sometime this year, maybe.
I also need a Full ATX tower, this one is on me. I'm an idiot and didn't buy the right one initially, however I can pick one of those up for pretty c**** since it's one of the cheapest parts of a build. Saw one I liked for like 150$.
I'm gonna let you look up PC component prices to see, I haven't but I know they're wild right now with Nvidia, and others moving away from consumer sales to AI data center sales. RAM has been the big one most have at least heard about my current set of ram cost me 500 when I bought it, currently this same set is worth about 2k. It's wild out there.

Pinball machines…
Covid really did a number on the value of used machines. Most of the popular Williams and Bally models from the 1990s shot up in value. The icing on the cake was the much publicized auction of the Museum of Pinball collection in Banning. The prices were nuts, and while they have come down some from those highs, the days of finding a classic 1990s game for c**** are now long gone.
The bright side of the high prices is that this has attracted new manufacturers to the industry. Now along with Stern, and JPP, there are other boutique manufacturers making games like Spooky, Turner Pinball and American Pinball. Some of the classic 90s games have had reproduction built by Chicago Gaming.
