What is a movie where the ending is not the saddest part, what comes after is

Posted by gamersecret2

Some movies do not break me because of the final scene itself. They break me because of what the characters still have to live with after it. The damage is done, the truth is out, and you know life is never going back to normal. For me, Manchester by the Sea is one of the strongest examples of that. What is yours?

That ending hits because the real panic starts after the big moment, not during it.

I was coming here to say that myself.

Yeah, tried to break up my crush’s wedding to another dude. They tell me I’ll get out on parole and good behavior here before too long!

If you believe the fan theories, he actually saved the world.

Even so, imagine loving with what you had to do to achieve it. I'd be so broken.

True.

Even if that is the case, which I don’t buy, that’s not something the main character would know or believe so his life is still awful
4
I_Weep_for_Willow Mar 25, 2026 +3
Yeah that's a good point. I guess I was thinking of the overall, and forgot about *him*.

I might be misremembering but I think the theory is that the fog cleared and the army showed up only *because* he killed his family. If he hadn’t shot them the fog wouldn’t have cleared. I could be wrong.
4
Blursed_Hearse12 Mar 25, 2026 +4
Nah it’s purely a stroke of ironic genius to write the ending that way.

I_Weep_for_Willow Mar 25, 2026 +3
It's just a fan theory, but yeah. Earlier the crazy lady said that if they sacrificed the kid, the mist would go away.

Yea I think the last line alludes to his total self awareness: > Which would be worse: To live as a monster, or to die as a good man?

The Big Short. The weight of the realization that the whole system is rigged and there’s nothing a single person can do, or even a small group can do to repair it.

mantisinmypantis Mar 25, 2026 +9
That’s what my entire adult life has been. Constant daily reminders the entire thing is broken, run by people who are legitimately evil and don’t care about anyone besides themselves, and who factually don’t care how many of us struggle or die. And there’s nothing I can do about it.

manchester by the sea absolutely destroyed me for exactly that reason. lee's just stuck carrying all that guilt forever and you know he's never gonna forgive himself for me it's her - like the movie ends and joaquin phoenix's character has to figure out how to exist in a world where he fell in love with an ai that outgrew him. the breakup itself was sad but imagining him trying to date actual humans again after that experience... oof also eternal sunshine hits this way too. they're gonna keep meeting and falling in love and hurting each other over and over because they can't help themselves

gamersecret2 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Her leaves you with a really quiet kind of sadness. Not just heartbreak, but the feeling that normal life might never feel the same again. Eternal Sunshine fits too. That loop makes it hurt even more.

Lou-AC Mar 25, 2026 +1
In Her he's got that as a shared experience with many others though. I always thought there was a spark with him and Amy Adams character too and she understands what he's been through

Just re-watched. Actually, I think there’s a sliver of hope at the end of the film. First, he opens up and talks about his pain for presumably the first time. He also decides to move. Then he starts to “play catch” with Pat and they go fishing and actually seem to have a conversation. It’s a good bookend to the opening re: their relationship.

My wife and I watched this again recently, and I hadn't remembered how Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro's character had an attraction in the beginning. This makes that final scene where they all have a toast absolutely brutal because you could tell that Streep's character wanted to try, but that De Niro's character would probably resist because of the memory of his friend. Utterly devastating. I had to put on the live version of Bruce Springsteen's "Land of Hope and Dreams" just to bring life and joy back into the room.

Kind of the opposite of your reasoning, but if you watch "The Fault in our Stars" it has a nice, calm ending. And then you realize that you just watched the protagonist die.

Not sad, but I've often thought about what Ed Norton's character will go through after Fight Club.

Palahniuk did write a graphic novel sequel, doubt they’d ever take a crack at it for film though

Some things are best left in obscurity, like Zombie Robert Paulsen, and the constant cuts to the writer's room where Chuck doesn't know where to take the story, then ends up in it...

Scarecrow  The scene where the creepy inmate tries to force Lion (Pacino) on him was incredibly disturbing -in fact, it’s r*** (says so in the original script).   It’s the most harrowing thing I’ve ever seen on screen….  Then he emerged, his face bloodied and beaten, and it was like I was punched in the stomach; my breath was taken away by the sheer brutality. Later on in the film, Lion’s wife lies to him about having lost their son, saying that he wouldn’t go to heaven because he wasn’t baptized,  and that’s  when Lion completely broke. The water fountain scene where he tried to baptize another child was devastating - Al‘s portrayal of a man who just couldn’t live with his guilt is so beautiful and shattering. It was heartbreaking to watch Lion playing with the kids, and then just losing all sense of reality completely.  He ends up in a hospital, catatonic.  I actually do think there’s a bit of hope at the end, and director Jerry Schatzberg essentially confirmed this decades later because he had a sequel all plotted out…. But, the movie itself is like a punch in the gut, and thinking about poor Lion 😭😭😭😭

Don't the kids literally dance in the street after? What exactly is sad about the ending?

The OP asked which movie where the ending is NOT the saddest part. As you say, in Jojo they dance at the end. The sad part is in the middle of the movie

Ah, see I read the title as he means that the saddest part is after the movie ends.

A Simple Plan. Horrible things happened all along, but the survivng friend/ brother was forced to go back to poverty, and left to try to live with his own self and the knowledge that the wife of his perfect marriage had confessed that she hated her life. She had to go back to her misery, too. Ugh. It's such emptiness.

Underrated movie. Should have been big.

the Prom Night remake. The final girl already saw her brother and parents brutally murdered in front of her by her crazy teacher. Then a year later, she’s in therapy for the trauma and PTSD. But the teacher breaks out again and starts killing close friends of hers as well as multiple other people It comes to a head when she’s at her aunt and uncle’s house with police guards and her boyfriend. But the teachers still sneaks in, kills the 2 policemen, and kills her boyfriend while the 2 of them were asleep in her bed. Idris Elba does come in and shoot the guy but that final girl is beyond scarred for life after that

It'll be interesting to see how they end the Sunrise on the Reaping movie, because the end of the book was extra somber knowing what Haymitch's life is like from there.

Not the answer you are aiming for, but that is pretty much exactly what the storytelling in Irreversible exploits. You actually see the after.

Just watched The Secret Agent. The final scene is a big what could have been if events had turned out differently, especially for the son in the film.

My favorite movie is Local Hero (1983). It's a charming movie about a yuppie Houston oilman who travels to the Scottish coast to purchase an entire small village as a refinery site. The oil bro meets the locals and has his mindset shifted the longer he stays there, realizing the shallowness of his corporate climbing and appreciating the beauty and comfort of a true community. No specific spoilers here, but as the music swells (beautiful score by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits) and the credits roll a wordless, person-less scene is shown that is simply overwhelming once you realize what's happening.

Didn't it end with with the camp being liberated? The question was what happens after the movie ends, and I'd say the worst part happened during the movie.
