What is a performance from a blockbuster popcorn genre movie that you think was genuinely Oscar-worthy?

Posted by Hotwater3

Blockbuster popcorn movies usually get ignored during awards season outside of technical categories, and I understand why. However, I do think there are some really great performances sprinkled among them that in any other context, would be considered worthy of a nomination. Do you have any that stand out? For me I have a few: Hugh Jackman - Best Actor - Logan Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge - Best Supporting Actress - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon - Best Supporting Actor - The Dark Knight Alan Rickman as Severus Snape - Best Supporting Actor - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 2 Hugo Weaving - Best Actor - V for Vendetta Danai Gurira as Okoye - Best Supporting Actress - Black Panther Brian Cox as William Stryker - Best Supporting Actor - X2: X-Men United Robert Downey Jr - Best Actor - either Iron Man 3 or Avengers: Endgame

His USS Indianapolis speech.

> “Anyway. We delivered the bomb” That’s one of my favourite lines in all of cinema. Just so full of regret, sadness, anger and resentment.

It's been a few years since I heard the story, so I could be remembering wrong, but I believe this took 2 days to film. He got permission from Spielberg to have a drink before filming to be more authentically intoxicated for the scene. He showed up blitzed, they did a million takes and none were good. They tried again the next morning, he showed up sober, and they got it done pretty quickly.
15
Scoobydewdoo Apr 2, 2026 +16
According to Spielberg that scene took awhile to film because no one was happy with how it was written. After a bunch of takes Spielberg said Shaw convinced him to let him rewrite the scene. I have no idea whether there was alcohol involved but Shaw's rewrite is basically what's in the movie.

patrickhenrysaidso Apr 2, 2026 +8
I found a USA Today article about it. Shaw wrote it, and then was too drunk for the first takes to perform it well. Tried it again the next day and nailed it: "He got too drunk to perform the Indianapolis speech when he finished writing it," Ian Shaw says. "He had to beg Steven to have another go, and then he got it right the following morning.” [https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/movies/2023/09/20/shark-is-broken-broadway-tells-jaws-movie-true-story/70859398007/](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/movies/2023/09/20/shark-is-broken-broadway-tells-jaws-movie-true-story/70859398007/)

Bob Hoskins in Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the best acting performance I've ever seen
291
sharrrper Apr 2, 2026 +136
He said he started to hallucinate in his off hours he was spending so much time each day pretending to interact with things that weren't there. Also, he said for the Jessica Rabbit introduction scene they didn't have final art for the animation yet so rather than show him a picture they just said "imagine the most beautiful woman you've ever seen". He said later when he saw the final product (paraphrasing) "Wow, my imagination is terrible."

willstr1 Apr 2, 2026 +16
>He said he started to hallucinate in his off hours he was spending so much time each day pretending to interact with things that weren't there I am honestly curious how well that issue has been addressed now that acting against nothing is so common due to CG. Do the tennis balls on sticks and paper cutouts that some productions use really help with the psychology (not just helping eyelines)? Or is it just that because it is now so common actors are more used to it while back then he was pretty much on his own?
16
Anal_Herschiser Apr 3, 2026 +1
The best he could do was Louis from Family Guy.
1
dpman48 Apr 2, 2026 +70
I honestly think the animation was SO well done, everyone forgot bob Hoskins was acting by himself for most of the movie. Amazing film, amazing animation, and amazing acting by Mr. Hoskins.
70
SomedayVirtuoso Apr 2, 2026 +29
Interestingly, he wasn't by himself entirely. Charlie Fleischer would wear a Roger Rabbit costume off camera and say his lines and what not. Bob's physical acting was absolutely insane even considering that.
29
do_you_even_climbro Apr 2, 2026 +2
This is up there for me, but for me the best acting performance I've seen was Michael Keaton in Birdman.

Alan Rickman in Die Hard Jim Carrey in The Grinch
67
zowietremendously Apr 2, 2026 +21
> Jim Carrey in The Grinch Thank you. Finally someone with common sense. That performance was literally incredible. I saw it in the theaters 18 times because I was so captivated by his performance. I also just love the story of the grinch. 😂 All these upvotes. Whenever I bring up Jim Carrey as the grinch, you all down vote me, and don't take me seriously. Suddenly now you all agree with me, and also feel that it was an oscar worthy performance. Gtfo. I know you guys don't agree. You just think it's a silly kids movie, and not Oscar worthy. You always say Jim Carrey should've gotten his Oscar for a more serious and dramatic role like in The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, or Man on the Moon. But yall have never said he should've gotten an Oscar for The Grinch. Only I've ever felt that way. I've only ever gotten attacked and downvoted to hell for saying that.
21

Yeah the grink is the best!

Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame. Everybody was talking about RDJ and Chris Evans but I honestly thought that Hemsworth gave the best performance of them all and really brought a special level of sadness and humility to the character that hadn't really been explored in that way before.

Hotwater3 Apr 2, 2026 +19
People rag on Marvel now, and for good reason, but there are some truly great performances throughout the MCU. I wish the Academy had recognized some of these performances instead of nominating people like Matt Damon or Leonardo Dicaprio just for existing.
19
Bigboyloudparty Apr 3, 2026 +1
Which Damon and Leo performances specifically were unworthy of nominations?

Andy Serkis as Caesar in the Planet of the Apes, specially in War for the Planet of the Apes but Oscars sadly appear to don't care about motion capture performances 😣 Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley in Aliens also comes to mind 🤔
46

Weaver was nominated for ALIENS.
13

I agree with Imelda Staunton - I still hate her! lol
43
raysofdavies Apr 2, 2026 +18
Love that BTS thing where she says that people come up to her and say she looked perfect as Umbridge, and then says that you read the book and she’s compared to a toad lol
18
ilovethecreaking Apr 2, 2026 +5
Ordinary people being evil is her forte. She was a great Mrs. Lovett too.
5
Dottsterisk Apr 2, 2026 +14
Also, people have much more personal experience with abusive authority figures and unfairness, than they do psychotic mass murderers, so Umbridge gets to people on a far more visceral level than Voldemort.
14
GenGaara25 Apr 2, 2026 +2
It's a shame to movie was so short, there's so many great Umbridge scenes in the book Imelda would've been incredible in. There's a career counselling scene that's just Harry, McGongall, and her in an office and I can't imagine how good it would've been with Maggie and Imelda.

26
TheColbsterHimself Apr 2, 2026 +14
Civil war is I think the best acting from Downey in the MCU.
14
Bellikron Apr 2, 2026 +5
I always liked his performance in Spider-Man Homecoming. It's only a little more than a cameo but in the scene where he tells Peter off he has this disappointed dad energy that RDJ delivers perfectly. It's a matured Tony that isn't super far off from the days when he would have been just as reckless as Peter, but he clearly feels responsible for this kid and his worried about him. There's a little bit of his own dad in there as well. It's a really good scene, also sold by Tom Holland being really good at crying.
5
Saurischia1 Apr 2, 2026 +1
Get him, boys!
1
Hotwater3 Apr 2, 2026
I think you could basically pull any RDJ performance throughout the MCU and weave together a series of Oscar-worthy performances. If I had to pick two, yeah, I would pick IM3 and Endgame.

A question asking about blockbuster popcorn movies worthy of an Oscar and your answer is a movie that won 11 Oscars
42
urgasmic Apr 2, 2026 +26
No acting awards tho.
26
clancydog4 Apr 2, 2026 +10
Okay? Why are you intentionally leaving out the part of the question that makes their answer completely fair? It was specifically about acting Oscars. That film received zero acting nominations. So it's a perfectly good answer. OP didn't have a qualifier that the movie couldn't be an Oscar w***** at all. Just that it had to be a blockbuster and have an Oscar worthy performance. What a needless criticism and counter point you made
10
POTShelp Apr 2, 2026 +10
Especially since op in their examples said Gary Oldman for Dark Knight which literally had an Oscar win in acting for Heath Ledger.

Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday - Best Supporting Actor - Tombstone
26
buckythomas Apr 2, 2026 +8
Kilmer, playing a southerner in western, whilst having TB/consumption at various stages of severity, fever, chills etc, as a heavy drinker, gun slinging sociopath. THEN acting within the role as being too sick to join the hunt, only to bounce back once they’ve left and go after Ringo. It’s honestly in my opinion the greatest acting of any character ever filmed. It’s so layered, so genuine, so nuanced, so believable! Never a slip of accent, or a single weak moment the entire performance. To me it’s a master class, that I’ve never seen beaten, and it trumps any of the great performances from the likes of Daniel Day Lewis, DiCaprio, DeNero etc from the past 40yrs. In my opinion of course. I was only 4 when the film came out, but have watched in loads as an adult, and I am yet still retrospectively sour it was never even nominated!
8
kilwarden Apr 3, 2026 +2
One of the biggest reasons why I don't ever pay attention to the Oscars. If there was any justice in the world. Val kilmer absolutely deserved a best supporting actor for playing Doc Holliday. He absolutely 100% stole that whole entire movie.

Matthew McConaughey- Interstellar (2014) Absolutely nailed the conflict between a flyboy that gave up his dreams of flying amongst the stars to be a farmer and provide for his children. But now must lead a mission that the fate of those same kids as well as all of humanity hinges on. Every decision he makes is not just about saving his kids but also about finding a way back to them. The scenes where he’s leaving the house and looks under the blanket to see if Murph hid again; the scene with him getting all the messages from Earth after 23 years; and the scene of him and Murph being reunited on ‘Cooper Station’. Those 3 scenes alone should’ve gotten him a nomination at the very least.

Jonny Depp as Jack Sparrow. He took a character the producer's didn't even want in the movie and made him probably the most famous pirate in media.

Sean Penn did a good job in Mystic River but I still think Depp should have gotten it. Inventing Captain Jack is still, IMO, one of the best examples of an actor operating at the peak of their powers and transforming the entire production through the power of their imagination. He didn’t just do a great job with the role given to him, he put the work in and took the character to the next level with his performance.

Civil War - Pretty much all the main cast, with Cailley Spany and Jesse Plemmons being the standouts. Superman 1978 - Christopher Reeve (lead), Margot Kidder (lead) and Gene Hackman (supporting, the same category as his BAFTA nom) District 9 - Sharlto Copley (lead) Elysium - Sharlto Copley, Jodie Foster, Wagner Moura (all supporting) Chappie - Sharlto Copley (lead, notice a pattern?) - an innocent manchild in robot form, who knew? Good Time - Robert Pattinson (lead) and Benny Safdie (supporting). Safdie (a behind-the-camera talent) knocking it out of the park IMHO. Skyfall - Judi Dench and Javier Bardem The Edge - Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin (both lead) Die Hard - Bruce Willis (lead), Alan Rickman, Alexander Godunov, Reginald Veljohnson The Mask of Zorro - Banderas (lead), Hopkins, Zeta-Jones, Wilson Falling Down - Michael Douglas X-Men First Class - McAvoy (lead), Bacon, Fassbender Split - McAvoy (lead), Taylor-Joy (supporting)

The budget for Get Out was definitely representative of an indie horror movie. The box office that Get Out had was representative of a blockbuster hit movie.

Dr. Stephen Strange in Dr Strange 1 And Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff in Multiverse of Madness. The Marvel movies wouldn't work at all without the amazing performances from EVERYONE. Bradley Cooper as rocket. Its hard to name just 1

Honestly the whole adult cast of Harry Potter is incredible. Pretty much every one of them embodies their character so well that I don't see how the new HBO series can feel anything like a pale imitation, and a lot of the new cast are objectively well-suited to the roles.

Kind of low hanging fruit, but Angela Bassett in Black Panther: Wakanda forever. Low hanging fruit because she was actually nominated lol

Does an A24 movie that started as limited release really count as a "blockbuster popcorn" movie? Also didn't she get an Oscar nomination for the role (and lost it to Jamie Lee Curtis for a supporting role in the same movie)? Nothing against her, she did a great job in that role, just not sure it fits the question

Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart in Logan for sure. I feel like Tom, Hiddleston in the first Thor, if it happened today, could have been in covnersation for supporting. Same for RDJ in Endgame

Not quite what you asked, but I like to pretend that Zoe Saldaña’s Oscar is for Avatar: The Way Of Water instead of… that.

“Blue Lou” Marini in Blues Brothers. He had two words and delivered them with the kind of “what the hell are we doing here?” vibe that you should always hear from a guy who knows they shouldn’t be stealing a gig from the Good Ol’ Boys. Matt “Guitar” Murphy deserved a Razzie.

Thomas F. Wilson, Biff from Back to the Future. He played 17 year old Biff, 3 versions of 47 year old Biff, 77 year old Biff, Griff, and Mad Dog. Each character was amazing, and especially Mad Dog. That guy deserved an oscar.
