What is ICE actually doing at the airport? | ICE is supposed to be helping TSA at American airports. I didn’t see that at JFK.

I saw ICE immediately after arriving at JFK’s Terminal 4. Four agents stood in a tight circle outside the Delta Sky Priority check-in area. They didn’t seem to be managing the crowd or doing much of anything at all. Their vests identified them as ERO: Enforcement and Removal Operations, the division that carries out immigration arrests and raids. As I made my way to the TSA line — wait time: one hour and counting — I saw two more agents standing idly in a corner. Despite the crowd, I had plenty of time to check out the ICE presence at JFK’s other terminals. I saw the same thing in each one: ICE agents, sometimes from ERO and sometimes from other divisions, gathered together near the check-in area. Sometimes a pair would break off and walk around. They weren’t violently arresting anyone, but they also weren’t helping manage the crowds, which is ostensibly why they had been dispatched to JFK and other airports in the first place. At JFK they are currently being trained by TSA to do travel document checking duties and to give advisements to passengers (TAKE OUT YOUR LAPTOPS, NO WATER) TSA officers are not on board with this and do not want them there in any capacity.

They're going to privatize the TSA. First, the gov't forces delays through the removal of funding. Then, they send ICE in to make things better by simply standing around. Surprisingly, the lines get shorter as the manufactured problem goes away. The fault is then laid at the feet of how the TSA is being run, and someone suggests that a business mogul could make things better. This is the same script that's being applied to the Post Office, albeit faster.

Wasting American's tax dollars. I suppose we should be happy they're not murdering and kidnapping us still, but yeah, that's exactly what they're doing. Milling about like the useless wastes of oxygen they are.

They are there to get people used to them. Because it gets the public used to their presence. Because once they get the authority they need to enter secure areas, etc, their presence will be normalized. Agents use the line to identify "undesirables", other agents grab them, detain them, then put them on a plane to disappear. The definition of "undesirable person" is, of course, at the very least the not-white, not-straight, not-fantatically-evangelical-christian, non-rabidly-MAGA, and likely also not-male. Think of it this way, ICE raiding houses is dramatic and inefficient, but "disappearing" people in the airport? easy, efficient. We're cooked.

I am no fan of ICE or this administration, but I spent some time watching them at Houston Intercontinental this morning. They were friendly and chatty with people. A lot of walking around, making jokes with each other. Every Starbucks on my longggg walk from terminal C to A, had a few lingering. They were not scanning the crowd. They stood next to people in the long lines and just stood. I feel like they were instructed to be nice ICE this time. Helping people stay in a straight line is a very important job. Pretty friendly, so who knows what TF is going on. I’ve been wrong many times, but my takeaway is they don’t want to be there and are going to ride it out.
