What is something you can’t do anymore, but you could when you were younger?

Attend university all day, work 35 hours a week at an after school job and then go out with friends to party until the wee hours of the morning. Then repeat the next day. Not anymore!!

My current equivalent: full-time WFH day job, and a side-gig that becomes full time in the summer. I'm working on making the side-gig the main one, but it's scary. I was hit hard in 07/08 so I'm on edge about not having steady income.

TheTopNacho Mar 29, 2026 +3
Yeah how tf did we do that. I remember being at the university from 6:30 to 3 and then working from 4:30 to 9 almost every weekday, and somehow having time to spend hours with friends almost every night, then play video games while studying at the same time until 2 am or so. Somehow I managed to stay fit, do BJJ 4-5 days a week, manage to hit the gym every day, and still keep grades up Now I work 7-5:30, spend time with my kid, and am paralyzed with fatigue by 9. If I'm lucky I can find an hour to work out each week and maybe make it to BJJ once a week as well. College was wild and honestly was the highlight of my life with respect to time I have to do things I love.

Yes I remember use to work serving jobs at 10:30am, worked in the financial and party district so it was essentially open to close shifts, get off at 11pm and head to the club, leave at 2:00am, go to bed by 4:00am and get ready for work at 10:30am, hungover, like nothing happened. Not anymore 😂😂

esoteric_enigma Mar 29, 2026 +3
I would literally go out drinking and dancing until 5am and then wake up completely fresh for class at 9am. Now if I drink 3 glasses of wine, I'm going to feel it tomorrow.

dealingwithhookers Mar 29, 2026 +2
let's be real, no one did that. there were plenty of naps in between, power naps before the party and you would absolutely be hung over and sleep until 4pm the next day. and "attending university" just meant sitting in lecture and dosing off most of the time. and you're not allowed to work more than 20 hours a week at my university...

Mocha-Fox Mar 29, 2026 +2
Man, on a gentler related note- staying up all night and being fine. I rarely make it past 10 or 11 now.

Fluffy-Entry-1559 Mar 29, 2026 +2
I did my masters while working full time and now i barely make it to five

Chan1991 Mar 29, 2026 +73
Sleep more than 12 hours. Now I’m my (almost) 40, I need to be up by 6:00am otherwise I feel like my day is wasted, even though I don’t have any plans for the day 😂

sitewolf Mar 29, 2026 +20
I used to jab my dad for still getting up at 5:30am every morning not only after selling the farm, but after fully retiring. Now I do the same thing even tho I'm retired and I love that time.

Cabala03 Mar 29, 2026 +7
Same! Why have we become this wsy!?
7
ShigodmuhDickard Mar 29, 2026 +10
Because we used to live in the bush! The young stay up late and the elders wake up early. It’s added protection against threats like predators or a rival band of hooligans!
10
Chan1991 Mar 29, 2026 +8
If I wake up late at like 8:00am, I will RUSH to get ready ASAP… just for me to do nothing. I’m also at the age where I go to the park just to listen to nature and stare at the sky. 😂

ashton8177 Mar 29, 2026 +5
It is amazing how the older you get the harder it is to sleep. It is the most basic human function and requires no skill. Hit 40 and all of a sudden it is a challenge to do!
5
143019 Mar 29, 2026 +7
And it's not like I am not tired. My body is exhausted but my brain says "F*** you, live on 5 hours."
7
formerbays Mar 29, 2026 +2
Omg yes… I could sleep the day away when I was younger.. now I’m up no later than 7am no matter how late I stay up😢
2
SnoopySuited Mar 29, 2026 +2
If I sleep past 8 I'm pissed at myself.....cause I have a chair to sit in and chores to avoid!
2
aipplesandbanaynays Mar 29, 2026 +2
Sincere question: what are you doing at 6am? Are other people in the house? Anytime I get up early, I then settle on the couch because I feel like it’s too early to start anything, and then I fall asleep.

Riding roller coaster without getting headache...
21
RequirementAncient46 Mar 29, 2026 +6
This one! I was so sad when I went to 6 Flags and left with a headache and my back was sore. That's when I knew I wasn't a young chick anymore. Reality sucks!
6
GrouchyMary9132 Mar 29, 2026 +6
Can work the other way around as well. Went to a theme park with a stiff neck. A few roller coasters later whatever was pinched was unstuck and I was okay afterwards.
6
tasukiko Mar 29, 2026 +4
Lols yup, went to an amusement park last year and each ride found a new way to make me feel terrible. From motion sickness from spinning to hip pain from squeezing into the seats to neck pain from the whiplash to stomach pain from the food quality to a headache from dehydration to the knee ankle and foot pain from walking so much. Twas a rich tapestry of information on my failing meat mech.
4
mellotron42 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Or back pain. Darn stenosis.
2
TheDailyUmbridge Mar 29, 2026 +46
Eat whatever I wanted and still be metabolically healthy.
46
Chan1991 Mar 29, 2026 +4
In the same but unfortunately with sushi. I use to do sushi buffets all the time during college, but now I’m my mid 30s if I eat anything raw I’ll have a stomach ache for a week. 😫
4
Zamzummin Mar 29, 2026 +2
Could be celiac disease from the soy sauce, which contains wheat. It doesn’t make sense to get a stomach ache from raw fish, unless it’s bad fish it shouldn’t cause any issues. My 87 year old grandma eats raw sushi.

Put my socks on with having to pull a leg up. Not worry about hurting myself by sneezing or sleeping wrong. Get up from a seated position with grunting.
7
FlowersForMegatron Mar 29, 2026 +7
Eat whatever trash food I want with no repercussions.  Now, if I eat a slice of pizza too close to bedtime I’m battling heartburn all night.
7
LoveDistinct Mar 29, 2026 +13
My left leg is messed up, I can't really jump anymore.
13
Chan1991 Mar 29, 2026 +3
I jumped a flight of two steps last week and I think I pulled a muscle (I’m almost 40)..

My toenails go neglected too often, too long. Summer and sandal weather is here. Time to double the Ibuprofen and break out the grinder.

5
Minflick Mar 29, 2026 +2
I miss that metabolism too!!!
2
Prestigious-Talk1112 Mar 29, 2026 +4
I can't just run anymore.  I'm healthy like I don't have any major problems with my heart or anything like that but I'm overweight so running feels very heavy every time my foot lands on the ground a sledgehammer is driving into my bones. And the main reason it hurts is that I have flat feet which have become progressively flatter every single year literally making walking kind of hurt.  The flat foot has caused my tendons to hurt constantly and the bottom of my foot to hurt.
4
LowerIndependence455 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Try running in a pool. It gives you exercise without the shock of running on a hard surface.

Walk. I have a degenerative spinal condition. More than 30 yards and I'm in agony. Hear the TV (and people). Subtitles have become a necessity. My most common phrase is, "huh?" See anything close up. I build scale models as a hobby, it gets worse every year. Party like a rockstar. Yeah, that had to go. 12 years alcohol free and I don't really miss this one.
3
guydoestuff Mar 29, 2026 +3
Running, I wasn't a marathon guy but I loved running. Im almost 50 and some medical issues caused my bones to become brittle and I gained a bunch of weight. I lost most of it but my hips were ground into dust. Now I need to lose another 20 pounds to get hip replacements but been told I'll never run again. I can barely use a push mower to cut my own lawn.
3
HumanMycologist5795 Mar 29, 2026 +3
1. Run 2. Ride a bicycle 3. Play sports 4. Eat any food I wanted 5. Have hope and dreams 6. Go on vacation.

Go over to a friend's house, knock on the door, and see if they wanna hang out for the day. If it's not planned through text two weeks in advance, it's not happening.

Chan1991 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Does anyone have FOOD restrictions now that you’re older? I use to eat raw sushi all the time. I could eat grocery bought sushi or high end and I will feel fine. Now I will get food poisoning for a week. Also a lot of my friend group actually are now gluten intolerance! Anyone have that happen to them?

Cartwheel down concrete steps in roller skates. To be fair, I  have not tried it in 35 years....

1
Blue_Goggles Mar 29, 2026 +1
It's really hard to describe, but when I was young I used to be able to tense my head or neck muscles in the right way that made my face go red and increased the blood pressure in my head until I saw stars. I'm now 55 and don't dare do this as I'm worried I may have an undiagnosed aneurysm.
1
PurpleSquare713 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Eat a disgusting amount of food at buffets and big holiday dinners, or wolf down an entire pizza in one sitting. Sadly my metabolism isn't what it used to be so I can only have one plate at most.
1
Chan1991 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Yep same and I HAVE to make sure I got some good greens on my plate, limit my deep fried intake and dessert. And eat some fruits 😂

Used to be able to do hundreds of sit ups and push ups whilst hanging from a pull up bar for a long time. Used to be good at climbing up poles and random objects. Now, I feel nothing but joint pain, I get winded easily, and due to hand surgery, my grip strength is nonexistent.
1
DaveLLD Mar 29, 2026 +1
A lot of the comments are about physical things that can't be done without pain or injury. Regular exercise really helps mitigate this. Its not the same as when you were 20, but you can do a lot more without injury if you're active.
1
the_monkeyspinach Mar 29, 2026 +1
I used to be able to "skip" with my arms. Held my hands behind my back and kept them together while I brought them up and over my head, in front and then stepped through them with each leg, behind up to my back again and repeat.

Sing high keys. Im not a singer but i had freakish highs my whole life until my first bout of bronchitis knocked me out. After recovering, I now sound like any other deep voiced dude trying, but failing, to hit those notes. Been 21 years and I still miss the squeeky cartoon voices I used to entertain with.

Get up or sit down silently. Go for a walk and enjoy it, not be in physical nearly extremis. Walk quickly for 30+ minutes. Have a functioning body. This sucks.

Enjoying the view of fireflies at night. I never see them anymore in a long time. Dragonflies, too.

Do blow all night and then go to work the next morning. It's too much of a risk now with all the fentanyl.

A cartwheel. If I did that now it would look more like a flat tire lol

Pee, walk more than 10 metres without numbness & pain…. Sorry having a bit of a dark humour giggle at myself. I have multiple sclerosis. Things I can do now are be mindful & find beauty & happiness in the small things

Swim a 100m fly. Bend over backwards abd touch my feet to my head. Bench press more than 95 lbs without my elbow screaming like a b****. Eat everything in sight without gaining any weight. I would say my endurance and lower body strength is better now than ever in my life. But I've definitely lost some flexibility and upper body strength as I've gotten older. My recovery after an intense workout is also a bit slower, which combined with actually working full time means I net far fewer active calories.

Chug energy drinks and stay up gaming all night after a long day at work and before the next one. Go on a weekend bender with weed and alcohol, ending sometime Sunday morning between 4 and 6, and going into work, still off my face, at 8:30 on monday without dying. Or getting caught.. but I put that down to it being a call centre.

Sing. Ever since my voice got deeper, I can’t carry a tune anymore.

Basic gymnastics stuff like cartwheels/roundoffs, forward/backward roll, and handstands. I also used to be able to get down into the splits (though it'd look more like [this](https://d2bu5x7wh3zdqa.cloudfront.net/s3_16x9_1600/default/0002/31/08adbe475ba806f435fec29fd3c5679aeee6e038.jpeg) instead of [this](https://yogarove.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/front-split.jpg) which was what I wanted but could never get my back leg to be completely flat on the ground even after taking various dance lessons).

eat or drink. Unfortunately, my genetics didn’t warn me that i am susceptible to developing insulin resistance. iIm not even medically classified as pre-diabetic, mind you, i just immediately feel nauseous and fatigued when i eat even a bite of anything that catches my pancreas’s attention. My pancreas overreacts constantly, and i end up just vomiting anything i eat if i don’t try to keep it down long enough to pass into my intestines, so im also constantly hungry on top of that. i am told to just exercise and be healthy, which is difficult when you’re constantly hypoglycemic.

I could climb a tree, pole, or just about anything with little effort. I climbed straight up a telephone pole at a party one night and several other dudes tried and couldn't do it.

Experience extreme excitement and joy. Emotions feel bigger and come easier when you're younger. As I've gotten older, I still look forward to things but not with the same anticipation and enthusiasm. I don't get as angry about things, either, which is good at least.

Get up off the floor without straining. I'm 73. It's amazing--and horrible--all the things you can't do in your 70s. I'm leary of every patch of ice, especially on steps. Breaking anything would be awful, because insurance, even Medicare, is a farce these days.

Used to jump right up onto 4 foot tall 2 inch wide hand rails and run on them for shits and giggles. Doubt I could do that safely now lol.

I used to be able to dunk in high school. That was 20 years ago now. I’m surprised I was ever able to do it. I can still touch the rim but there is a huge difference between touching the rim and dunking. Best ones I ever got was a tomahawk and a reverse two handed dunk.

Well I'm still a teenager but before I hit puberty I could pull of high pitch voices and even a Mickey Mouse impression which I am very proud of!
