Rice and beans, eating c**** can be tough on your digestive system so don't forget the fiber, folks

Frumpy_little_noodle Mar 28, 2026 +565
Don't forget the lentils! Protein for days! Indian seasoning packets will also help if you don't know how to flavor food.

F****** love lentils. I usually keep 3lbs or so in the kitchen bean drawer.

Ah yes, the kitchen bean drawer. Right next to my kitchen potato cabinet.

Party-Egg60 Mar 28, 2026 +51
I need to know more about this bean drawer
51
YOSHIMIvPROBOTS Mar 28, 2026 +23
Most important thing to know is, don't keep the beans drawer above the frank drawer.
23
Pharmie2013 Mar 28, 2026 +21
How in the hell did you get the beans on top of the frank

Same. My wife and I have also managed to replace rice with quinoa. Lentils, quinoa + choice of protein. Easy meal
9
CranberryDistinct941 Mar 28, 2026 +21
I prefer lentils to beans when paired with rice since you pretty much just substitute a scoop of rice for a scoop of lentils and then cook it the exact same way
21
7Mars Mar 28, 2026 +12
Wait really? I need to try that!
12
Zoethor2 Mar 28, 2026 +14
It depends on the kind of lentil, but yes, I can attest that I will cook French lentils and rice in the rice cooker with just a little extra water, white rice setting, and they come out great.
14
sachimi21 Mar 28, 2026 +11
Ramen flavouring packets, bouillon cubes, curry, etc all work too.
11
OttoRocket94 Mar 28, 2026 +5
Be careful with the ramen seasoning packets. Each one comes with a weeks worth of sodium
5
albinoteacher24 Mar 28, 2026 +35
Aldi just had it's 16 bean soup bag of 20oz marked down from $2 to .50. You bet I bought like 20 bags.
35
PsychologicalLab6637 Mar 28, 2026 +6
An I see all these ppl getting these awesome bargains at Aldi lately but everytime I'm there I can't find any 🥴
6
TheBiggestHug Mar 28, 2026 +4
That's because people are buying like 20 at a time.
4
Defiant_Regular3738 Mar 28, 2026 +16
You can survive a week on rice and beans for $10 fr. Get you some condiments or sauce packs and mix it up.
16
R0botDreamz Mar 28, 2026 +38
What if I told you these are the things you're SUPPOSED to be putting in your digestive system.
38
TheGenkz Mar 28, 2026 +39
That's what the beans are for.
39
urafknidiot Mar 28, 2026 +29
Don't forget the super firm tofu and a little bit o (c**** frozen) greens! This is not just the cheapest but the most optimal diet.
29
potatohats Mar 28, 2026 +6
How do you make those? Certain spices, preparation methods, etc?
6
urafknidiot Mar 28, 2026 +7
Super firm tofu cubed (it has to be super, not extra firm or regular firm). I put it in a big mixing bowl. Dump a lot of nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, turmeric, chili powder, a bit of thyme, salt. Then I toss it up to get it mostly coated. Then drizzle olive oil. Toss again to get it fully coated. Bake @ 425° for 20-25 mins. Dip in sauce of your preference.  For the frozen greens I just toss in the pan with a little oil and throw some of the similar spices on those.

Lazer_lad Mar 28, 2026 +32
I love beans and rice but they turn me into a fart monster.
32
Aurum555 Mar 28, 2026 +73
The more regularly you eat them your body adapts go the fiber load
73

Legumes, legumes, continual fuel, for additional fuel, consume legumes at every meal.
16
SecretAsianMan42069 Mar 28, 2026 +29
That's a terrible song
29
09232022 Mar 28, 2026 +38
That means you don't eat enough fiber regularly.
38
AlloCoco103 Mar 28, 2026 +6
Just use [Beano.](https://www.beanogas.com/)
6
ChibiBladeZ Mar 28, 2026 +4
Yeah, nothing humbles you faster than a big bowl of beans without a side of greens.
4
juryjjury Mar 28, 2026 +17
Use brown rice as it has lots of vitamins and fiber.
17
Foreign-Habit-6901 Mar 28, 2026 +5
I eat a lot of rice and beans to save money and sometimes I really have to force it because its like eating cement
5
DatTF2 Mar 28, 2026 +18
Sounds like you aren't using spices or sauces. I eat a lot of black beans. Take them out of the can into the pan and add a bunch of spices like garlic powder, onion powder, cumin and chile powder then mix them up with tomato, onion, cilantro and green sauce and roll them up in a tortilla. Tasty.
18
amlidos Mar 28, 2026 +15
Try Mexican rice and beans, it's much better than cement
15
AndringRasew Mar 28, 2026 +3
Throw some potatoes in there and you're set. There's a reason it's one of the highest satiety foods.
3
2C7D6152 Mar 28, 2026 +467
Pinto beans, white rice, and salt when bought in bulk are so c**** they might as well be free, and the shelf life is infinite if you keep them dry.
467
Tippydog1 Mar 28, 2026 +97
Needs hot sauce
97
DatTF2 Mar 28, 2026 +25
That's actually how I developed my liking of hot sauce. Was in an area where we didn't have food and even though we were in a house it was basically like camping. We had a lot of rice but no soy sauce, only hot sauce, especially Sriracha (before it was even that popular.)
25
justonemom14 Mar 28, 2026 +21
Not completely infinite. Beans kept for several years will take longer to cook / be hard to get soft. The oils in rice (at least brown rice, not sure about white) will eventually go rancid. Technically though, I think you can eat rancid food - it won't harm you, it will just taste really terrible.
21
Emergency-Airline960 Mar 28, 2026 +2
Huh. TIL that rancid and rotten are two different things.

rotisserie chicken
1269
VanessaAlexis Mar 28, 2026 +427
Dude a few weeks ago Fox News tried saying millennial and Gen Z were broke because of luxury foods like... Rotisserie chicken.  At this point they want us to just die.
427
jeckles Mar 28, 2026 +82
Have they even been to Costco? $4.99 for a whole damn chicken.
82
lefrench75 Mar 28, 2026 +53
Tbf most low income folks don’t have a Costco membership but many other supermarkets have rotisserie chickens as their loss leader at a reasonable price.
53
azuth89 Mar 28, 2026 +20
It's only like a buck more at Kroger. Cheaper than buying raw.
20
TAforScranton Mar 28, 2026 +3
Just checked. They’re $5.97 at Walmart. I get them all the time.
3
thathappyhippie Mar 28, 2026 +8
I’ve just started buying rotisserie chicken in bulk instead of raw chicken, you can get like 4 whole chickens for the price of a pack of chicken breasts at this point.
8
kagamiseki Mar 28, 2026 +5
Costco rotisserie chicken has been cheaper than most raw chicken for a long time. It's cheaper than a raw whole chicken. It's cheaper than chicken breast. You can find ones upwards of 5lbs, which means they can be cheaper than even drumsticks, which are already very c****. You don't have to cook it, and you can slow cook the carcass in a pot, crock pot, or instant pot to make a very good bone broth for extra protein and nutrition.
5
thathappyhippie Mar 28, 2026 +4
I never had access to bulk stores until recently but things like that and the savings on gas prices are worth the membership cost
4
Lovefist1221 Mar 28, 2026 +3
I just did this. Kept vegetable trimmings in a bag for a week or two, some peppercorns and a nay leaf. Delicious stock and easily freezable!
3
Very_Human_42069 Mar 28, 2026 +6
They’re $10 at Wegmans… I really gotta get a Costco membership
6
lokiandgoose Mar 28, 2026 +43

Spite has been keeping me alive the last 20-odd years.
14
breakwater Mar 28, 2026 +10
There was coverage before that which they were trend chasing. It wasn't supermarket or Costco chicken. It was boutique fancy chicken that cost 20 to 50 bucks. The coverage initially sparked because rotisserie chicken IS c**** and a tiny number of people were opting for gourmet, overpriced stuff
10
JDSmagic Mar 28, 2026 +4
Wall Street Journal, not Fox News. The article is here https://www.wsj.com/style/luxury-grocery-stores-erewhom-meadow-lane-happier-grocery-9d654a14. And here's the Twitter post that went viral, promoting said article (which you probably saw a screenshot of). https://x.com/WSJ/status/2021769261962666158?s=20 But it seems like you didn't read it. Maybe lock in and don't believe everything you see in a screenshot. If you did choose to read it, maybe you'd see that the whole article is about luxury grocery stores like Erewhon.. not Costco. Relax.

Whole Costco pizza (either cheese, pepperoni or half/half each) for **ten dollars** That’s a steal imho Edit: typo
89
Ghstfce Mar 28, 2026 +4
Every Thursday I hit Costco to do my food shopping and once I pay, I get a slice of pepperoni and a drink for less than $3. Can't beat it.
4
EducationalRoyal6484 Mar 28, 2026 +3
Yes you can. With a hot dog and a drink for $1.50 :D
3
CarmenxXxWaldo Mar 28, 2026 +21
Sams has them for 8.98 and offers a meat lovers too.  Its the only pizza I ever buy these days.   Their food court and rotisserie are worth the membership fee alone.
21
Jimmythedad Mar 28, 2026 +6
Sam’s meat pizza fresh is so goated. I order it from the app when I get in there, pick it up on my way out without having to wait in line
6
Pissflaps69 Mar 28, 2026 +18
Costco pizza is better, imo. But you’re right, Sam’s gives a little more variety
18
mountain_rivers34 Mar 28, 2026 +10
Costco pizza is better the day you get it, but Sam’s Club pizza is wayyyy better reheated.
10
breakwater Mar 28, 2026 +3
There are pizza buffets around that price. But since I can't eat a whole Costco pizza, it is a better deal for the leftovers
3

4

Just take a lap and get one sample from all free samplers. That should count as one whole meal
3
elfstone21 Mar 28, 2026 +6
You can get 2 for 10 bucks! That's a big f****** meal.
6
Street_Astronaut_920 Mar 28, 2026 +8
My first thought was a Costco Rotisserie chicken plus a box of Rice a Roni.
8
ditchdiggergirl Mar 28, 2026 +12
Costco rotisserie chicken plus large Costco bag of Asian salad (which is cabbage based, not lettuce based) and some rice (giant bag at Costco again, but only purchased once in a great while so I count the rice as nearly free). That’s presumably above $10 now, but back when I was feeding a family of four I could get 3 very different meals for 4 people (two were small kids who wouldn’t eat salad anyway) for $10 total. Night one: chicken + salad + rice. Night two: chicken stir fry with the salad (which contained several stir fry compatible vegetables chopped finely enough that the kids wouldn’t object) served over rice. Assumes spices are owned. Night three: chicken soup made from the carcass, the remains of the salad, and rice. (We usually made matzoh balls instead, but I’m staying on theme here. Otherwise noodles are the other obvious carb, and use up that sad carrot or whatever you else you find at the bottom of the veggie bin unless you used it in yesterday’s stir fry.) So not under $10 today, but subtracting the kids you can get at least 6 adult meals with probable leftovers, so well under $10 per meal.

Get a membership, go once a week. Do the impossible and get the rotisserie chicken and hot dog - nothing else. Factoring in the membership, Chicken $5.63 and hot dog $2.13 per visit.

Doesn't take a lot of hotdogs to make that membership worth it.
16
Electrical_Agent_594 Mar 28, 2026 +18
Most Costcos you don’t need a membership for the food court. You can go in through the exit door and ordering doesn’t prompt for membership.
18
HNP4PH Mar 28, 2026 +34
They’ve cracked down on that. At least say you are a non-member using the p******* or something
34
jambers206 Mar 28, 2026 +21
My son found out recently that a Costco gift card (even an empty one) can get you in and you don’t need a membership or gift card to buy from the food court.

Oatmeal's even better - slower sugar release and much more fiber and protein, and it's less processed than pasta. It's slightly more expensive per pound to buy, but after you rehydrate it to eat it's much cheaper. It's healthier and [more versatile](https://www.google.com/search?q=savory+oatmeal+recipes) too.

pugadoodledoo Mar 28, 2026 +68
Pasta plus the cheese is actually a pretty protein-packed meal, too. Last night I had rotini with Parmesan and I threw in some peas for extra protein and sautéed onion. Was 👌🏻
68
PawsOffMyIPA Mar 28, 2026 +49
I know not everyone is a cottage cheese fan but long ago I sat down to have pasta with someone and they brought out cottage cheese with our plates. You just sort of mix it in as you go and it gives me ricotta in lasagna vibes. Gives you a lot of extra protein and it’s c****!
49
pugadoodledoo Mar 28, 2026 +23
I just so happen to be the biggest cottage cheese fan you know! For Christmas my boss bought be a case of bougie cottage cheese 😂 I’m 100% trying this, thank you for the suggestion 🥰
23
darkshrike Mar 28, 2026 +5
Honestly I LOVE cottage cheese as a dip for doritos. You actually get full from the snack and ita tasty AF. If you REALLY wanna gussy it up mix in some whipped cream cheese and fresh minced garlic.

Back when I didn’t have a pot to piss in, I’d go into Walmart and gently peel off the $.99 barcode sticker from little candle holders and stick them on a more expensive item I really wanted. Self-checkout wasn’t a thing back then, so it was really just a matter of hoping they don’t look at the screen as they were scanning everything else. And if they noticed, I’d balk and play stupid…then return the item later because there’s no way I was paying $50 for a set of 1000 thread count bed sheets back then.

Born-Jacket Mar 28, 2026 +12
At home or on the go... eggs (hard boiled to take with you), apples or other seasonal fruit, rice, beans, pasta, and beyond that look at sales for various vegetables and occasional meat. Remember that mushrooms, tofu, etc make good meat substitute for a lot of dishes, depending on prices/sales. Our bread store still runs sales of bread for 4 loaves for $5, so you could mix that in too (especially if you can score a freezer on marketplace for $50 so you can avoid wasting food, batch cook, and stock up when you get a great price on something. Honestly $10/meal is a lot of money. I mean, a pound of beef is like $5. PB&J can be another good on the go if you get the components on sale. Eating out, much tougher, but if you must once in awhile, I agree with the other poster that you have to catch sales at the big chains or find the hole in the wall place that has a couple of items c****.

I believe a piece of chicken, broccoli, a tortilla and one other thing will keep it under $10.

Rice and beans with chicken legs. Good filler, good fiber good protein, plenty of other options on the c**** just don't be too c**** because where you save in food you pay in medical bills.

Lentil soup is c**** to make and super filling. You can adjust quantity of raw ingredients from max sized to easily fit that budget and make enough soup for… a long time. It’s also super healthy. Below is a basic recipe but you can adjust or eliminate and still have a delicious soup. Lentils (c****, French or brown) Onions (optional. white, but doesn’t matter too much as long as it’s not sweet) Celery Carrots Potato (I use red, but they’re the most expensive. You can use probably any, but I would tend towards waxy versus super starchy) Stock (I use vegetable as a vegetarian, but you can use beef too) Garlic Tomato (crushed can tomatoes. Fresh tomatoes are fine too) Bay leaf if you’re feeling fancy Blend half of you’re fancier. Blend all of that’s your vibe but I like a chunky soup. Like I said, you can somewhat d’jour the ingredients. I’ve definitely done less and it still slaps. High in fiber, protein, and several vitamins. Low in fat (which is good for diets but also necessary for your body so obviously you will want to make sure you’re getting some in your diet elsewhere or like put a dollop of full fat whole milk yogurt on top or something). Realistically, legumes and beans are where it’s at. They’re healthy, high protein, and high fiber. There are so many kinds and you can add them to basically anything. Great for heart health too, and most importantly super c**** (especially if you buy bulk dried versus canned). Other c****, healthy, and relatively balanced meals that are c****: Hummus, falafel, build-your-own rice bowls (meat and animal byproducts like eggs and milk/cheese is where ingredients get expensive), stir fry with veggies and tofu, tofu anything (Asian grocery stores sell mega blocks for like $2 and it’s a hell of a steal for the amount of protein and how much you get - very filling and versatile), potato soup (buy heavy cream. High fat, lasts longer when opened, doesn’t take too much, can be cut with stock which can be bullion cubes as they’re cheaper), sautéed veggies. By the way - gardens are easy to grow. I have a black thumb and more bell peppers than I can give away every year. If you don’t have a yard, that’s ok - get some above ground planet boxes, bags, or diy it with Amazon boxes or cinder blocks. Hydroponic is also an option! I’m vegetarian but I’ll tell you this - it’s way less expensive and my “splurging” is maybe like $10 cheese. That’s the peak of my per-unit costs and it’s not a one meal and done type of item.

I just made dinner with a rotisserie chicken, mashed potatoes, roast cabbage and gravy for about $12 total that was able to feed four adults. We bought a rotisserie chicken, some potatoes and a green cabbage, made gravy with chicken bouillon and the drippings from the chicken, and had milk, butter and flour on hand. Not quite as frugal as some of the suggestions here but was a nice option! But we also are a big fan of rice and beans and curry with rice

We make a pot of rice, beans and chicken legs that's total ingredients are about $12 (1 package of chicken drumsticks $7, 4 cups rice $2 (from a $6 bag of Walmart parboiled riced) and 2 cans of red beans about $3). It makes 6 full meals. 2 adults can eat it for dinner for 3 days. Spend another $5 on lettuce and tomatoes as a salad and you get a really filling meal for under $20. Works out to be less than $3.50 per plate.

A large container of chicken fried rice from the Chinese counter at my local Kroger-family store is about $8, which isn't bad...but at least at my store if you get there when they mark down the leftovers around 6:30-6:45pm, that $8 container becomes $3-3.50ish. (Strangely, it somewhat varies by day.) Regardless, if they have leftovers - which they often do - and I time it right, I can get three containers for about $10. I weighed it once, and it was over five pounds! After stuffing yourself, the trick is to put the remaining containers in Ziploc bags. When you're ready to heat some up, put it in a microwave-safe bowl, put your hand under the sink then drip a little bit of water onto the rice (maybe 4-5 drips if a small bowl, 10-12 if large) then put cling wrap over the bowl before heating it. Do it this way and it can stay as fresh as just-served for three of four days.
