We were talking about how some of the most visually breathtaking films were made with practical effects, real locations, and incredible cinematography, not CGI. For us, the ultimate example is Tarsem Singh's The Fall. Everything you see in the film is real. The otherworldly landscapes are real places on Earth, the costumes are works of art, and it all comes together to feel like you're watching a painting in motion. The story itself is a hospitalized stuntman in the 1920s who tells an epic fairytale to a little girl, but the real story is why he's telling it. It's heartbreaking that a film this unique and stunning is so little-known, likely because it didn't have a massive studio marketing push. It's a masterpiece that deserves to be seen and discussed. Have you seen The Fall? And what other non-CGI visual masterpieces do you think have been criminally overlooked?
I maintain the best practical effects film of all time is Blade Runner. It is absolutely insane the work that went into that practical effects in that. It still looks incredible to this day. Next would be The Thing.

Movies with great cinematography without CGI there will be lots back in the golden age of cinema.
Think along the lines of 'ZULU', 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Ben-Hur' as 3 examples of my favourites.

Blade Runner, Mad Max: Fury Road (some CGI used for composite shots, but largely practical effects and on-location shooting), 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Also, because I never see it mentioned much, Terry Gilliam’s Brazil is visually stunning with fantastic set design and use of miniatures.

People like to rag on Waterworld (1995) but it's a stunningly well shot movie. Half the problems with production were related to the decision that they really wanted to shoot on an open ocean: they thought that water tanks and / or a shallow harbor would be unconvincing. These days, you could easily use CGI to erase land on the horizon or add deeper waves and bluer water. Back then, it meant towing vast sets several miles out to sea.
The reward is that we get some genuinely stunning shots of tiny craft on vast oceans, and it really does feel like a world covered in water.

Samsara (2011). Personally my meditative documentary piece that checks all the beauty of Earth and cultures.

When you refer to yourself as "us" and "we," is it because you're a bot written by a team of people?

Aronovski's "The Fountain" has magnificent visuals for the interstellar sequences. All made with high-focus microscopy and a variety of dyes and colloidal solutions, nothing else looks like it to this day.

While the movie itself was just fine, Far and Away was shot in 70mm and I saw it projected in 70mm when it first came out and it was gorgeous.

Popeye.
It's corny and perhaps unexpected, but each shot looks very homely and the location they shot at is pretty beautiful in a general sense.

The Fountain. Stunning, mostly practical effects.
Obviously pretty much anything by Christopher Nolan... Not CGI-free, but practical effects wherever he can.

This is incorrect. The Fall is famous for using almost no CGI.
