Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits. One of those songs where pretty much anyone, regardless of their favourite genre of music, ends up at least tapping their foot to. A close second for me is That's Entertainment by The Jam.

I will give it a try. Sounds like the part of my playlist!

HyperbolicModesty Mar 27, 2026 +4
Sultans of Swing is so good it's almost inconceivable that some guy in his 20s could come up with it on his own. First listen to the original, then read the lyrics while thinking about the context: south London in the economic depression of the 1970s. Then find a live version with _that_ solo to appreciate the guitar mastery. Then to really reinforce how utterly brilliant it is as a piece of songwriting, go to YouTube and look for Josh Turner and Mary Spender's cover, which sort of unwraps the craft for you. Amazing song.

Anytime I drive past someone blasting Kashmir, I just can't help imagining they're heading on some epic adventure. It's like the perfect soundtrack for feeling like a total badass on a totally ordinary day lol.

Oh nice, I love that song but never see references to it. I was once on a plane that had a library of shows and music to listen to and I was blown away they had that track available. I played it a few times and made for one if the chillest airplane rides ever. Also: "Hallucinogen/LSD" by Paul Oakenfold, another banger, but kind of intense

I just finished a 9 hour drive out of the state so I went through a LOT of music. I can tell you what still hits for me: “Breakaway” Kelly Clarkson “I’m with You” Avril Lavigne “Beautiful Soul” Jesse McCartney “Man! I Feel Like A Woman” Shania Twain I swear, I hadn’t listened to these songs in what feels like a decade but I somehow remembered every single lyric 😂

“Kaw-Liga” by Hank Williams. It was an oldie before I was even born, but — the first time it came on the radio in my dad’s pickup truck — I realized that music could be more than just background. The driving beat, the mournful refrain: this was a SONG.  It’s not my favorite song anymore and it hasn’t been in a long time, but it was my FIRST favorite song, and I still really dig it.
