I’ve watched Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Sopranos and Mad Men. Obviously I haven’t watched many tv shows, and I wanna start one that’s on par or better than these.
Thanks in advance
Boardwalk Empire,The wire, deadwood and the Americans

the wire is probably the best one from that list, really shows how messed up the system can be from every angle
also deadwood has amazing dialogue but fair warning - it got cancelled so no proper ending which still makes me angry lol

Does The Americans get better? I tried it for a few episodes but I found it to be way more campy than the other shows you and OP mentioned.

The Americans is a slow burn, but once it catches it's one of the best.

The west wing is absolutely unwatchable now.
The entire show, at the end of the day, is people trying to do what they think is best for the country, even if that is wildly different than what the other person thinks, and the staff are wildly compassionate people really truly trying to help people.
The first episode the president excoriates someone for not standing when he walks in the door and when it aired you were hooting and hollering for him to get her because _how dare she_.
You couldn’t pay me to stand up now.

Star Wars Andor. I know it’s the cliche Listnook answer cus it’s the serious Star Wars show but it’s just a well produced show that also happens to be star wars. IMO it’s one of the few pieces of Star Wars media that fully comprehends the theme of the ip. Season 2 especially feels more like traditional sci fi,than the sci fi fantasy of typical stars wars, with the ripped from the headlines story line with a sci fi flavour (there’s a very good reason Mon Mothmas speech from season 2 gets reposted a lot).

Yes, all of this. Andor is superb and you don’t need any Star Wars knowledge. And I’d also second The Americans. The two shows even share a writer and producer in Stephen Schiff.

Knew next to nothing about Star Wars (as much as one can know next to nothing about Star Wars) and was absolutely blown away by Andor.

I wouldn’t put Barry next to those two shows even though season 1 was great. I really liked the concept but after a while it just became a trite ‘Barry refuses to stop killing people for hire which ruins his life.’ And I think that choice of the showrunners was honestly just to keep the series running/have more action scenes in it

Horrid take😭 literally the main message of the show it's about going against your own nature that's why nobody gets a happy finale, and there's barely action through the show and most of the action scenes are awkward and raw because of the show wanting you to deromantize how violence is showned on TV,but alright it's not a show for everyone.

The message you provided for the show is incoherent

The Americans, Succession, Mr Robot, Six Feet Under, The Wire
True Detective season 1 (It's an anthology series so you can just watch that season and it's a complete story. Other seasons don't hit the same mark).
The Twilight Zone. Black Mirror. Both anthologies where every episode is an unrelated story, so you can look up lists of the best episodes if you don't want to watch the whole thing.
Miniseries - Chernobyl, Band of Brothers, Adolescence
Comedies rather than dramas, but fully serialized stories that are just as good as the above dramas - The Good Place, Bojack Horseman
Buffy the Vampire Slayer deserves a mention. Firefly too.
There are episodes of Star Trek (TOS/TNG/DS9/VOY) that hold their own as some of the best things *ever* to be on TV. Look up the lists of best episodes if you don't want to watch everything.
Returning to comedies - The first ~9 seasons of The Simpsons and the first 5 of Futurama as well. They both sort of wane in later seasons but there's a lot of the best episodes of anything ever.
The first 3 seasons of Arrested Development (It was cancelled and then revived on Netflix many years later, the revival seasons aren't nearly as good).
Still running so there's a possibility the quality might take a nosedive - but I'd say White Lotus, Severance, and Pluribus would make the list if they can keep up the same level of quality until their end.

Everyone is saying The Wire and I agree - when I watched it all (on DVD box sets in 2011) I thought it was so brilliant. I tried to watch it again recently and felt very differently about it and thought there were things in there that might put a modern viewer off from the get-go. So, you might just have to sit through some uncomfortable feelings in the first few episodes in order to get through to the good parts. It’s worth it, but you may have to persevere.

Twin Peaks - the origin of modern prestige television, but of these three you may find it the hardest to get into.
Succession - The best contemporary prestige tv, I don't think there's really any debate.
Hacks - 2nd best contemporary character driven prestige drama imo.

Sucks that mindhunter got cut. Could have gone on forever exploring different figures from that time period.
